The hatshaper is discontinued, but you can also use a rolled up bath towel and stuff it into the hat to help maintain shape too. Plus, the towel will soak up extra moisture from the inside.
Yup after seeing this, I'm definitely picking one of those up. Got many fitted's that have seen better days, but won't throw away because of sentimental value - glad there is a way to salvage them!

So my eye doctor has suggested that I start wearing a baseball cap to protect my eyes from the sun/uv rays as my eyes are very sensitive to light. So I'll be looking for a few fitted caps and will try using your method. Thanks.

i used a baloon for shaping... but you dont want to use a to big a ball or baloon because if you stretch it to much it wont sit in place... the elastane will brake

I had the same problem so before I wet it I wipe with a dry rag or brush all the dirt or dust I can get off that stuff is harder to Remove when its wet. Use Balloons. I have been restoring hats for 25 years and found this method to be the best by far. You can get 30 balloons for $1. Make sure they blow up round and not light bulb shape.

SHOUT!, works real good. Also if you use Velcro tape and wrap it around the bill it will work just as good as one of those bill curves, if you like a curved bill.
I'm trying to get the smell of mildew and mold off from hats. I've used hand washed with a brush using detergent and the spores are gone but the smell still lingers. Would the shampoo method work? I heard vinegar works supposively.

NEVER put a fitted cap into a washing machine. Always wash by hand. Washing machines can mangle them and ruin the brim (straight or curved) You don't want to soak the hat either, which a machine would do. I'd advise against it.
Woodz 45 check your tag. if its a wool hat or a wool blend then yes, use the reshaper. It will still shrink and lose structure, even if it still fits the hat wont look right. Made that mistake myself

Baby shampoo can work, but a standard cheap shampoo will also do the trick. Basically, anything you would normally use to clean the natural oils, sweat, dirt from hair.
Top of the brim is rough, since you don't want to soak it. I'd use a super small amount of shampoo and water, we're talking very small amount. You can also use a lint roller to get up loose dirt and dust.

I really wish I had before and after photos! It’s crazy how perfectly it turned out!! At first I was worried about the wool being a little rolled up but the lint roller fixed that. I asked my boys and my husband if they could find the spots that had gotten dirty and they couldn’t! I didn’t have the hat shaper so I used a colander and it worked great!
Wouldn't do this with a light colored hat the soap always will leave discoloration if you don't take all the soap out which is impossible without getting the hat soaked
I tried this onj a hat of mine and, sadly, it didn't work. In fairness to you, the cap was stained with an ointment I used for my dandruff, not just sweat.
Can't say I've tried using Brake Kleen. I fear why something that strong might do to the fabric, so I'd recommend sticking with something lighter like shampoo. Although, since I've posted the video I found out some people use normal laundry detergent (with the toothbrush method) and get decent results too.
@@visualsmuggler from what I understand, brake kleen is just carbon tet, which is dry cleaning fluid. I've used it to remove various grease stains out of a few of my wife's delicate blouses with great results and zero damage or discoloration. You should try it on a hat with no serious value. However, it only removes grease & oil (petroleum) stains and does not clean common dirt.
That's a tough one because sweat is easy to clean since it's essentially just natural salt/oil from your body. Coffee, on the other hand, has other elements in it which cause a different tpe of stain. You could try the shampoo method but may need a stronger stain lifting cleaner. Be careful with too many chemicals though, because these hats are generally made of wool and harsh chemicals can screw up the colors.

Use you can the same technique, just be super delicate with the toothbrush. You don't want to scrub as vigorously as with the rest of the hat.

That cap was straight up neglected. As long as you use cold water and air them to out well. They can handle more vigorous cleaning.

Use Woolite for delicates. Also it doesn’t hurt to get the brim wet.

Probably best to use standard shampoo. Since the hats are mostly made of wool, you want to be careful with super harsh chemicals and alcohols.
