  • The White Tree of Gondor, a symbol of the Kings of Numenor. But more than that, it represented their friendship with the Lords of the Valinor. How did the Dead Tree in Court of the Fountain come to be? Who gave the Numenoreans the White Tree in the first place?
    And what was its lineage and history?

    I remember reading somewhere that the white trees grew extremely slowly and that Aragorn thought/felt that the seedling he and Gandalf found was just 20 or so years shy of being the same age as Aragorn and must have sprout some 100 years before their present.

    Of course the sapling’s growth is not coincidence. The entire land seems laced with magic, good and evil. It is prophecy, that the tree would reappear with the appearance of a noble and humble king. As I read it, it did not surprise me. That Gandalf found it makes me believe he knew of it’s growth all along and therefore, knew of Aragorn’s destiny...with that, also the hope of Frodo’s quest.

    • @vixendoe2545

      Tolkien came to believe that magic was strictly neutral, neither good nor evil. That was determined by the intent of the user.

    Fun fact, my name is also Karl! And I also love the Silver Tree (hence my username). Probably the most important aspect of the White Tree of Gondor, in addition to everything else, is that it is the last living link to Heaven (being the great, great, great, great, great, grandson of Telperion). Additionally the Gondorians are the last people who know the "true religion". That is they, beside the Elves, are the last people to know the truth about the Universe: the Valar, Valinor, and Eru Iluvatar. Sauron would dearly love to see the White Tree destroyed.

    • @LordTelperion
      @LordTelperion 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Addendum: Tar Palantir was "too late" to save Numenor not because the Valar wouldn't forgive him or his people, but because too many generations of Numenoreans had grown up under previous spiteful kings and their anti-Valinorian propaganda. Tar Palantir and his government might have been trying to repair the breach but the majority of the citizens had bought into the "fake news" of the previous kings and rebelled against the throne. That is, Ar Pharazon saw his opportunity to rebel against Tar Palantir's mission and usurp his dynasty by using Tar Palantir's unpopularity against him for his own rise to power...thus dooming the only hope Numenor had to avoid it's sad fate.

    • @GeekZoneMT
      @GeekZoneMT  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ah, awesome name then buddy! I'm curious to know why you liked the Silver Tree so much, quite a distinct part of the lore to be drawn to! I wish we had more information about 'Religion' and the Beliefs of other Men such as the Rohirrim, I don't believe we're ever told about it.
      Regarding Tar Palantir being too late, there's a direct quote from the Silmarillion which says "But his repentance was too late to appease the anger of the Valar with the insolence of his fathers, of which the greater part of his people did not repent" From my understanding, it implies that the Valar would not forgive them due to the present situation in Numenor (That there still was bad blood between the vast majority of Numenoreans and Valinor). I feel it's similar to the point you brought up, though I guess I could have been more specific during the video :) Thanks for your contributions as always! It's nice seeing fellow passionate fans of Tolkien's works!

      @LordTelperion 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mmmmm...I love Telperion for several reasons: 1) the beauty of the word itself, how it looks visually and how it sounds, 2) I love the concept of the Two Trees being the original light of creation before the Sun and the Moon and how their fate (and the fate of their light within the Silmarils) will determine the fate of the World, 3) I've always liked silver more than the other precious metals, 4) I love the Elves and the Elves also venerated silver and the Silver Tree above the other colors/metals...and whatever the Elves love makes me love those things even more 5) that Silver was the Elder Color, the color of the magic world of the Valar and Elves while gold is the color of Man and the modern world under the New Light of the Sun, 6) that Telperion's scions continue on and are the last living links to Paradise and our connection to something greater 7) the White Tree would become represented in Gondorian art (the hemispherical fan of it's branches as part of Gondor's flag and logo) and in architecture (the domes used in Gondorian construction are a salute to the hemispherical fan of branches...which is a beautiful link to Rome & Constantinople in the real world).

      And yes, a real joy to have another uber-fan out there, especially one doing such high quality lessons of the source material. • @feanor411
    @feanor411 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The exact nature of the line of white trees is somewhat disputed. While the Silmarillion tells us that Galathilion was an image of Telperion created by Yavannah herself, Gandalf states that it was a seedling of the legendary tree (though of course the descendants didn't give off light, regardless of what their origin was). The Silmarillion is written in the mode of a history, specifically a summary of the great events of the First Age, compiled by Bilbo into "Translations From the Elvish" from many sources available at Rivendell (including interviews with Elves old enough to remember these events). Bilbo seemed to have used a good bit of poetic license, as the differences between the older "Lost Tales" & the finished Sil are vast. I think Gandalf's account is more likely to be true; as Olorin, he would have come into Middle Earth at its very beginning, and would be in a position to give witness to these events.
    There was no known image of Laurelin on Middle Earth, though Turgon did have an image of it wrought from gold in Gondolin. It has been speculated that the mallorn is a descendant of Laurelin, but that species of tree likely existed before the kindling of the Two Trees, as Yavannah sowed the seeds of all plants before the trees came into existence.

    • @truthseeker4128
      @truthseeker4128 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep... he did. But... he was also tremendously influenced by Joseph Campbell. Lucas read the book "A Hero's Journey" just before he wrote the screen play for Star Wars. Look into it, Campbell's works are excellent... mostly about folk lore and mythology... and how myth is constructed in culture. This, along with Tolkien's works, were basically where Lucas learned to put all the components together for his own stuff. It's too bad most modern writers are such idiots and can't seem to get their own acts together.

      @@truthseeker4128 yes, The Princess of Mars books are very ahead of their time but so much better written then the newer stuff today. Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote them just before the 20th century too, BEFORE we even had the knowledge about the science's in the books. Great video!
    I have to make two additions though:
    The first white tree in the image of Telperion, Galathilion, is pronounced with the stress on the "thil", So actually Galathìlion.
    Another thing I would like to add is that king Turgon of Gondolin had forged an image of the two trees Telperion and Laurelin from gold and silver. It's just another evidence that some Noldor were regretful of leaving, or at least remembered the trees.

    GeekZone Correct me if I am wrong, I know that the focus was on the trees (so awesome), but weren't the Numenoreans that were corrupted by Sauron later called "Black Numenoreans"? Also didn't Osse sank the island of Numenor into the sea to also destroy the Black Numenoreans and almost more importantly Sauron (Note that it only destroyed his physical form, but not his spirit)? What are your thoughts?

    • @Torsar_
      @Torsar_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gingerbrettman there's a mud called Mume that is pretty awesome. In it as one of the evil races you can play a black Numenorean. They are the followers of Sauron. But no it was Eru himself that sunk Numenor including Sauron. That destroyed his physical form and also took away his ability to polymorph. Just as had previously happened to Morgoth.

    • @GeekZoneMT
      @GeekZoneMT  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not exactly, as some Numenoreans had settled in Middle-Earth, and these survived the downfall of Numenor though they still shared similar beliefs to the 'bad' Numenoreans in Numenor; and so they survived, becoming the black numenoreans :)

    • @Torsar_

      GeekZone ahh. Was just going off Mume. There is no choice. If you are a BN you are on the dark side and a follower of Sauron. I figured all the good guys were of Arnor or Gondor. I forget not everything dark had to be evil. Like the dark elves in his world.

    • @phxbillcee
      @phxbillcee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct, but I think they're intertwined. It seems each "rebirth" is somewhat weaker than its earlier form. In re: Ungoliant & her spawn & her spawns' spawn. Same with the White Tree, each successive generation seems to be a bit "less" than the preceding one. The same with the Numenoreans. So it seems that the further one gets from the "First Age" the less "power" is available, or at least incarnated. Almost like the "manna" is being used up as in Niven's books on the fading of magic.

    Probably the white tree that died with steward indicates that the king never returned since that king was lost, not necesarily dead, and the dead of the tree says that that king was lost forever

    • @GeekZoneMT
      @GeekZoneMT  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought it might reflect that perhaps the Royal bloodline in the Southern Kingdom of Gondor had died out or diminished too much to reclaim the throne and so the tree died along with it. Instead they would have to rely on the Northern Kingdom's line, that of Arnor, which would come with a new white tree Sapling.

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the Tree died during the times of the Kings of Gondor, not the time of the Ruling Stewards. The line continued with the king's brother's descendants.

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the second tree died probably of simple old age- it was over 150 years old and suffered a lot of pain and Gandalf warned Aragorn to always plant a seedling if he could find it, because it sprouted rarely, probably within the time frame. Aragorn is never mentioned as having to do that in his lifetime, so a healthy Tree might live roughly the same time as him, and Eldarion would have to plant a new seed.

    • @infernalone666

      edain means "elf friend", particularly to the three houses of men that befriended them in the first age

      Bilbo explains it to Frodo in Many Meetings:
      "I thought you knew enough Elvish to know 'Dun-adan' , Man of the West, Numenorean." Frodo only knew him as Strider, so he is surprised when Bilbo asked him if he had seen the Dunadan, who is Aragorn.
      Edain does not mean "elf-friend" it literally means "men" . The formal word for the race of Men is Atanari. Adan is the singular form. Bilbo tells Frodo that Aragorn is a Man of the Numenorean race.
      Elf-friend is "Elendil" or "Elendili" for plural, although it is close to Elvish for Devoted to the Stars (the Elendimir, for example is Star-Jewel)

      It is important to note that The Valar didn't know how to handle men, They don't even know what happens to humans when they die, Humans are Eru Illuvitars domain alone, So when the Numenorians does their transgression the Valar literary don't know how to react and Eru Illuvatar has to do the job of smiting.

      Men had been given the gift of mortality but also. A far higher responsibility for they will help sing the second song of creation. One untainted by morgoth. It's like a builder attempting to usurp a decrepit castle when he's already been contracted to build a better one. Such an attempt is deeply against the first music. Eru had to directly intervene. Without it numenor would have taken the undying lands since the valar are not allowed to impinge on eru's domain and man is strictly his and creation would have unraveled.

    Could the steward be a distant relative, maybe trough a daughter?

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the Stewards come from a different house of nobles, the House of Hurin (not the one in Silmarillion, same name) that traditionally served in that role to the King. They may have married into the house from time to time, but there are no records of any of that line being crowned or made queen.
      Gondor also only follows bloodlines via the fathers, so anyone from a female line does not count. Arvedui, the last king of Arnor claimed the crown of Earnur via his wife Firiel, daughter of Ondoher, the king before Earnur's father Earnil but Steward Pelendur refused him, crowning Earnil instead- a relative who was a male descendant of an even earlier king but in true line. Aragorn ironically claims his kingship of Arnor by this virtue as well, and then later of Gondor via the line all the way to Elendil (as well as being accepted by Gondor's people as king in his own right).
      Boromir once asked Denethor how long the Stewards would just be Stewards and not king. Denethor replied not in a thousand years or ever. He was powerful but knew he was not royal, and could never be the ruler on the throne.
      The link of the trees to the rulers might be coincidence, but the tree is not descended from Middle Earth so we can never tell. Its death during the Steward Belecthor's time might have just been a natural death, as the Stewards themselves forgot or did not know the grove where Aragorn would find the sapling buried long ago. Perhaps Belecthor died before he could tell his son about the grove, or some earlier king or steward forgot.

      Tomasz Wilk The Balrog is also a Maiar, similar to Gandalf as age has no weight on its existence. Similar to getting on the bad side of an elf, and being pursued endlessly. This is just speculation, but the best thing to do was to slay the Balrog in order to prevent it from leaving the Misty Mountains and creating havoc and following them wherever they go, or from falling under the command of Sauron.

      there was a debate between Elven visitors and the King of Numenor with his son. The Elves argue that humans would be destroyed by the Undying Lands as their bodies are not suited for its aura. The King argues that they just want to visit the Elves.
