Ah, my childhood coaster & a POV I've been watching ever since it was uploaded. Finally going back to magic kingdom in December, first time since summer of 2008, nostalgia's gonna hit me like a train.
Intimidator 305 (Kings Dominion) is so forceless to the GoPro cameras we have today. I viewed an Orient Express (Worlds of Fun) POV filmed on a tape camcorder and it was intense enough to cause dropouts in filming.
Rode this in 1986 when I was 7 years old and was crying like a baby girl. My little mind wandering in the dark thought we did loop-da-loops and jumped off the track and in mid air landed on the other side of the track. It traumatized me so much that I remembered it into adulthood. Now as an adult the coaster is child's play. Moral of the story - bring your kids to Disneyland at an age that they are old enough to appreciate it and not too young that it may traumatize them.
i love the setting of this ride. You feel like you are cruizing through space! You see planets projected, hear screams of other riders, get a sick breeze and awesome music is smashed in too!
This version is a classic and should never be changed. I like it the way it is. Probably the main reason it's so dark is so that nobody will notice the catwalk next to the track throughout the whole ride. lol
This was awesome! When I went on the ride, I ended up sitting in the front car. It kind of ruined it for me because I was able to see the track ahead and see where we were going to go, but I was really in awe of how tightly packed the whole ride was. Was a great experience for sure!
My absolute favorite Space Mountain, absolute favorite roller coaster, and absolute favorite roller coaster. This Space Mountain is my favorite. It's intense, awesome, and has every characteristic a space roller coaster needs.
It's cooler when you've seen it with the lights on. I've always wanted to and was jealous of people that have. Lol It's pretty amazing that someone can come up with a design of a roller coaster that's in a building. That's just awesome.
It was during the American Coaster Enthusiasts' "Coaster Con", a roller coaster convention. This is during their "ERT", or "Extra Ride Time". They close the ride to the general public & leave it open for ACE members. During ERT, they usually do special little things like turning the lights on in an indoor coaster, or turning the lights off at night on an outdoor coaster. I used to be in ACE for three years & I really miss it a lot!
It was scary for me back in 87....lol....10 years old, IN THE DARK!! Yeah, its just a bobsled type coaster, but the flat turns IN THE DARK will get ya as a little one.
As a kid, I was on Space Mountain when the ride stopped b/c of a bad thunderstorm. They turned on the lights and it was much scarier seeing how the ride was really designed. It looked rickety and dangerously crammed together inside that small space. Glad to see it wasn't my imagination.
pfffttttt I have been on some of the most extreme coasters but space mountain still kicks ass just because its space mountain its classic and nothing needs to change, it will always be fun
@westiesinwonderland: The lights are on before and after the park is open. They also come on in the event of an emergency. Normally the ride itself is pitch black with the only light being from the "stars" that are all over the ceiling, support beams and floor. It does have an incline but the ride itself only goes 27 mph and the drop is only 23 feet but in the dark it seems a whole lot bigger.
It was a special event. At the beginning, it said "Lights on ERT (Exclusive Ride Time), then "Coastercon XXIX (39)". ACE (the American Coaster Enthusiast Club) was holding their annual National Coaster Convention there that weekend. WDW closed Space Mountain to the public for a couple hours so the members of ACE could ride it and as a bonus, WDW turned on the lights during thier ERT session.
Not only is this version classic and should not be changed. But it is the best out of all of them.Me and my uncle went to disneyworld for a week and I went on it 53 times.(I counted)
There are a couple of steep drops but nothing too intense. In regular light it's a pretty standard coaster, but it's the darkness that makes it really thrilling.
For those of you who have never ridden this ride, it may look lame. But, in the dark (especially in the front), it's amazing. You have no clue where you're going and all you can see is the glow of the passing cars. Best coaster ever.
I can remember riding this coaster when it had a simple seat belt instead of the lap bars they have today. By the way, Space Mountains lines can get 2-3 hours long as does Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain. But they're still alot of fun
The one in Paris is newer and this one is the grandfather of all the Space Mountains. This one at WDW was the first Space Mountain and it opened in 1975.
aww you never know! I thought I've never go to Disney again, and my mom and I had extra money, so we decided to just do it! It was totally on a whim, and it was about the best time of my life...you'll go again...Disney's magnetic force can't be resisted for long! :)
Just to clarify any misunderstandings. They don't normally run the lights while the ride is in operation. It is true that in case of an e-stop or cycle down the lights do get turned on, however that doesn't seem to be the case here. (there was only 1 rocket train in the unload area), I'm not sure why the lights were on in this video unless a guest perhaps dropped something and a cm went to look for it. Still not typical though since no one is allowed in the gravity area while it is in operation
0:56 I'd have thought it'd be somewhere around here that we'd be able to see the people mover, considering they can see us from this point I believe. I know on the people mover you can see part of the ride, I could have sworn it was where you can look over and see another car on the other end of the track but I could be wrong
@frikis The light is on after it breaks down. They keep the lights on to inspect the ride for any further problems while they let people ride. Usually it's just dark or they'll turn the star machine on. I prefer to ride when the star machines on.
its a lot better with the lights off. and the rides arent designed for specifically 'children'. theyre designed with everyone in mind. theyre not too intense for younger people but theyre intense enough for teens and adults to enjoy them. im 15 and i love this ride. i never get tired of it.
Wow! My buddies and I went to WDW this summer (I do have vids uploaded) and this was one of the must-go rides. It was great! This was a totally different experience seeing it in the light! Thanks for the upload ;)
Ahahaha! I remember that ride from like. . . three years ago! It was so much fun! Thanks for the upload! I miss being able to go to Disney World with the family. I can't wait to show my 6-year-old sister what Disney World is like. 8D
interesting to see that back in the day that Disney World and Land built two of all their main attraction rides in each park. They have a mirror image under the same roof.
IM GOING TO DISNEY AND UNIVERSAL (so excited for WWOHP) AND IM SOO EXCITED. last time i went we always got fast passes and tours we never waited!!! i went on space mountain 7 times!! but for all the tourists the best ride is the expedition everest at animal kindom! i went on exactly 7 times!!
i went on this ride twice. Once when the lights were on and once when they were off. When they're off it's so much more scarier, you have no idea where you're going.
i went on this last week for the first time and it to be pitch black but i could see a little i was saying to brother keep your arms down because were so close to the car. awesome ride!
I was so lucky to ride this with the lights on at a summer camp I went to actually on Disney property. We got to ride it once with the lights on, we guessed how tall and fast and stuff like that, then we rode it with the lights off and everything seemed to increase, this was all before the park opened, it was amazing
This was a special event. ACE (American Coaster Entusiasts) chose to hold their national coaster convention or "Coaster Con" at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom that year and Disney closed Space Mountain for a couple hours that day so that members of ACE could ride it with the lights on.
wow, when i was on this ride it the dark it was scary to me it was like riding into the unkown but its cool to see how it looks in there with the lights on.
i was at Disney last night, rode this exact one! every time i went on it. which was like 7 times, but it definitely dosent look as extreme as it feels!
@VioletWildfire they put so much thought into it, but the theme of the ride is in outer space, and in space there is no light. Only makes sense to make something in space in the dark. The Mummy, however, I have no idea why it's so dark. But I love both rides.
@Justinp00p It does have music now. They recently added a musical soundtrack to the WDW space mountain. It's not on board, so it's not as effective as Disneyland's audio, but it's at least an improvement.
@legomaker8 you don't - its pitch black and you don't know where you're turning, how the coaster is gonna swerve, so it removes the body's ability to anticipate anything. Also don't look at the video, your sense of direction will be completely screwed. Pretty fun ride to try out.
@Telekon5 I have to definitely agree. When I was younger, (keep in mind I didn't like any type of drops) that little drop when you see the people on line or leaving the ride was enough for me. I went back a few years ago... and I was like...THIS IS IT?! LOL. I will still ride for fun, but IOA is definitely where I love to spend my time while in Orlando! Cool to see the lights on though.
same here...I went in the beginning of June. There was a sign that said it'd be closed until Winter of 2009, so hopefully by next yr, when I go again, it'll be up and running...I haven't ridden it in 12 yrs, so I'm overdue! :)

Yeah, I've also heard the supports are low enough in some places to hit them. They don't tell you that though. I just sit back and relax on space mountain.
i used to live down there and the lights were never on, we'd go almost every weekend, just random technical difficulties made them have the lights on, they never kept them on for too long though
@FruitLoopUSA All they did during the refurbishment was replace the track but they kept the same track layout. They also redid the roof and made the ride darker. Im sure its already as safe as it can be. I just dont want to take the chance ya know?
when i went to disney world space mountain stopped cuz some kids sandel got stuck so they stopped the ride and hey put the lights on. it was really bright but WICKED COOL!!
@koasterkid1234 ok so there is now two parks california adventure land which is so new that there are hardly any rides there at all, and i was under the impression that disney world is seperated into sections because it is so big, and it could take a week before you go on all the rides, for the most part, you can go on all the good rides at disneyland in one day, havent been i a while, so at most it would take a day and a half to go on all the good attractions.
Ah, my childhood coaster & a POV I've been watching ever since it was uploaded. Finally going back to magic kingdom in December, first time since summer of 2008, nostalgia's gonna hit me like a train.
I'll be there in December too! See you there!
Koko Willy What dates did you go on? I went 12/1 - 12/4.
back when I was your age I saw this video on my 800x600 monitor. it looked amazing and we liked it that way. you kids today are so spoiled.
Intimidator 305 (Kings Dominion) is so forceless to the GoPro cameras we have today. I viewed an Orient Express (Worlds of Fun) POV filmed on a tape camcorder and it was intense enough to cause dropouts in filming.
Yeah when I first saw this I thought it looked amazing!

The blue tunnel at 2X speed and the main ride audio at 1.25 and 1.5 speed is pure epicness!
Awesome video of a shaking grey blur!!
Nice photo! A little help over here in my picture perhaps? It seems a cyberman attacked me :-D
+Jodie Fox (Allonsy1963) delete!
It’s from 2006
i love the setting of this ride. You feel like you are cruizing through space! You see planets projected, hear screams of other riders, get a sick breeze and awesome music is smashed in too!
Why were the lights on? Was it a special event?
To this day TWD98 asks himself this
This version is a classic and should never be changed. I like it the way it is. Probably the main reason it's so dark is so that nobody will notice the catwalk next to the track throughout the whole ride. lol
The reason it's so dark is to scare the shit out of you
Why'd they use their laptop camera to film this?
Video was from 2006.
This was awesome! When I went on the ride, I ended up sitting in the front car. It kind of ruined it for me because I was able to see the track ahead and see where we were going to go, but I was really in awe of how tightly packed the whole ride was. Was a great experience for sure!
I feel like Disney is going to find me and erase my memory for seeing this.
My absolute favorite Space Mountain, absolute favorite roller coaster, and absolute favorite roller coaster. This Space Mountain is my favorite. It's intense, awesome, and has every characteristic a space roller coaster needs.
was there like an earthquake in that ride?? jeez lol
It's cooler when you've seen it with the lights on. I've always wanted to and was jealous of people that have. Lol
It's pretty amazing that someone can come up with a design of a roller coaster that's in a building. That's just awesome.
I RODE THIS IN THE DARK?!
I was one of the first people to ride it in 2009. We went for new years and got in as soon as the countdown was over. Great ride.
Nobody understands that this video was uploaded in 2006, thats why its Potato quality.
This was beautiful back then.
Evan Porter You can take stable pictures. A modern camera held as this one was would still be junk.
I love the refreshing breeze you get when riding this ride.
I saw Space Mountain with the lights on while i was riding the People Mover. This was before i had ridden it.
same!

I used to be in ACE for three years & I really miss it a lot!
this really kind of takes all of the magic away
That's neat you got to experience it with the lights on! It makes you appreciate how the ride is intended to ride in the dark! Great video!
I really overthought this ride it's not even scary
+gamerocker8910 Next time I go I'm gonna go on it
+[GD]pfriars14 It's fun. Not scary.
Diseny Back Then Want To Have Rides For All Kids But when He past a way Some years Later They did it more scary an now Star wars which I love it
It was scary for me back in 87....lol....10 years old, IN THE DARK!! Yeah, its just a bobsled type coaster, but the flat turns IN THE DARK will get ya as a little one.

quit surprised the one in Paris is better with loops and a launch
In Paris is Mission 2...That's why its much more bigger.
pfffttttt I have been on some of the most extreme coasters but space mountain still kicks ass just because its space mountain its classic and nothing needs to change, it will always be fun
god it looks cheep with lights on

its scarier with the lights on.... lmfao
I feel like I'm gonna get my head taken off!
SkyrimFanatic 007 ikr! everything is so close and cramped...
+DyanCat If the lights are off then you wouldn't see those head choppers...I guess there's something terrifying about the ride lights on or off lol.
SkyrimFanatic 007 Hmm... true. xD
I agree I don't like this coaster
It was a special event. At the beginning, it said "Lights on ERT (Exclusive Ride Time), then "Coastercon XXIX (39)". i love that ride so much. its one of the coolest at disney, next to expedition everest.
Not only is this version classic and should not be changed. But it is the best out of all of them.Me and my uncle went to disneyworld for a week and I went on it 53 times.(I counted)
That is really cool! I probably wouldn't get so nauseated if I could see where I was going! Thanks for sharing!!! TH-cam rocks!
this is one on my favourite rides ever.i know it isnt the best but its in the dark and u dont know wats gunna happen
They re-did the one in California and it was shut down for a long time. But now it is back, I love it and I am a huge roller coaster fanatic.
There are a couple of steep drops but nothing too intense. In regular light it's a pretty standard coaster, but it's the darkness that makes it really thrilling.
that music on this video goes great with the ride, has a great climax at the end, great job.
For those of you who have never ridden this ride, it may look lame. But, in the dark (especially in the front), it's amazing. You have no clue where you're going and all you can see is the glow of the passing cars. Best coaster ever.
I cant believe it loopks like that and this ride is sick!
I can remember riding this coaster when it had a simple seat belt instead of the lap bars they have today. By the way, Space Mountains lines can get 2-3 hours long as does Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain. But they're still alot of fun
I need to renew my membership to ACE. I didn't think Disney would get involved with ACE, but that's awesome!
The one in Paris is newer and this one is the grandfather of all the Space Mountains. This one at WDW was the first Space Mountain and it opened in 1975.

the people mover goes through the hill climb part
but i think the people mover is lower to the ground
@frikis
The light is on after it breaks down. They keep the lights on to inspect the ride for any further problems while they let people ride. Usually it's just dark or they'll turn the star machine on. I prefer to ride when the star machines on.

this is cool ive been on this ride like 50 or 60 times and never saw what it looked like where you could actually see
I think they should use this background music for Space Mountain!
The first time I rode this a few years back, we got stuck going UP a hill. They turned all the lights on and it looks incredible.
Wow! My buddies and I went to WDW this summer (I do have vids uploaded) and this was one of the must-go rides. It was great! This was a totally different experience seeing it in the light! Thanks for the upload ;)

i agree to a point...i think the fun is not knowing where you're going next. it makes the ride more interesting.
when i went on the ride i wanted to put my arms in the air but every so often i'd see the support beams, but it's an awesome ride!!
interesting to see that back in the day that Disney World and Land built two of all their main attraction rides in each park. They have a mirror image under the same roof.
Oooh! I can't wait to ride this in two weeks! Disney World for Christmas!
IM GOING TO DISNEY AND UNIVERSAL (so excited for WWOHP) AND IM SOO EXCITED. last time i went we always got fast passes and tours we never waited!!! i went on space mountain 7 times!! but for all the tourists the best ride is the expedition everest at animal kindom! i went on exactly 7 times!!
kind of takes the magic out of this ride.
you can't have as much fun at WDW if you don't have kid's
but cedar point is a coaster enthusiastics heaven!
i went on this ride twice. Once when the lights were on and once when they were off. When they're off it's so much more scarier, you have no idea where you're going.
i went on this last week for the first time and it to be pitch black but i could see a little i was saying to brother keep your arms down because were so close to the car. awesome ride!

just went 2 disney they recently changed the whole ride it flings u around more, and being 13, i found that quite entertaining
@jarenrobledo this is at disney world. disneyland is in anaheim. disney world is in orlando, florida.
This was a special event. ACE (American Coaster Entusiasts) chose to hold their national coaster convention or "Coaster Con" at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom that year and Disney closed Space Mountain for a couple hours that day so that members of ACE could ride it with the lights on.
I went on recently and it broke down when I was at the top of the first hill we got to ride with the lights on after about 10 minutes of waiting
wow, when i was on this ride it the dark it was scary to me it was like riding into the unkown but its cool to see how it looks in there with the lights on.
i was at Disney last night, rode this exact one! every time i went on it. which was like 7 times, but it definitely dosent look as extreme as it feels!
the ride deffinately is better in the dark, but it is pretty cool to get to actually see it
@VioletWildfire they put so much thought into it, but the theme of the ride is in outer space, and in space there is no light. Only makes sense to make something in space in the dark. The Mummy, however, I have no idea why it's so dark. But I love both rides.
i like when your waiting in line, there are meteors flying across the ceiling.this ride is great.
@Justinp00p It does have music now. They recently added a musical soundtrack to the WDW space mountain. It's not on board, so it's not as effective as Disneyland's audio, but it's at least an improvement.
I am 6'4" and that ride always makes me duck, now even more after seeing it with the lights on!
@legomaker8 you don't - its pitch black and you don't know where you're turning, how the coaster is gonna swerve, so it removes the body's ability to anticipate anything. Also don't look at the video, your sense of direction will be completely screwed. Pretty fun ride to try out.
This is the old version of the ride. The Disneyland Paris has the new one and both parks here in the States are being updated to that one very soon.
@Telekon5 I have to definitely agree. When I was younger, (keep in mind I didn't like any type of drops) that little drop when you see the people on line or leaving the ride was enough for me. same here...I went in the beginning of June. There was a sign that said it'd be closed until Winter of 2009, so hopefully by next yr, when I go again, it'll be up and running...I haven't ridden it in 12 yrs, so I'm overdue! :)
have been to WDW every year since I was 2. Have also been to Cedar Point many times...I love Cedar Point, BUT Disney is the BEST !!
i was at disney world this week and i was so pissed when i found out space mountain was closed till winter. that's my fav out of the 3 mountains
Yes, there are two tracks. Cuts down on the waiting time. Does anyone know when the
Space Mountain renovations will begin? I'm
going in November, and I'm hoping to ride
it before they close.
Space mountain has changed alot since 2006. Way better in the dark
when i rode this, i was in the FIRST cart in the FIRST seat! my mom hates rollarcoasters but we told her it was a baby ride, she got off SO peed off! ahaha i LOVE this ride!
it's cool to see everything but it is sooo much better in the dark.
I love it when its dark cuz u dont know where youre going or whats next
wow!! that is actually kinda scary! :)
I hope it does. It needs one badly just like Haunted Mansion. And when it reopens in 2010, I hope it would have a completely original soundtrack for the ride.
Yeah, I've also heard the supports are low enough in some places to hit them. They don't tell you that though. I just sit back and relax on space mountain.
i used to live down there and the lights were never on, we'd go almost every weekend, just random technical difficulties made them have the lights on, they never kept them on for too long though
i love how all the flashing lights make it look like your going faster than u realy r.
I personally enjoy the one at Disneyland better and it's interesting how everything's so different with the lights on. I went on this ride it was fun!
I REMEMBER THIS!! I LOVED THIS ONE AND THE RUDE WHERE ITS COMPLETELY DARK!! AND DO THEY STILL HAVE THE AEROSMITH RIDE!!????
Geez! Thanx for that vid, I've always been scared of going on that ride, but now its Jello safe, so I'll try it next time I go thanx to this vid!
I did that some years ago...I don't have any memories of it anymore o_O I sure didn't remember it that way. Looks extreme...I wana do it again !
This is my RIDE!!! I love this space mt.!
I got to see Space Mountain with the lights on once from the view of the People Mover while they were doing maintenence, but this is even cooler!
The Disneyland Paris version of Space Mountain is the fastest of the five versions of the ride, and is the only Space Mountain to include inversions.
I went on this for the first time 3 weeks ago and I loved it! It was not scary at all!
