I love how Dark Rides are often essentially just very simple rollercoasters but with the lights off. The atmosphere, sounds and lighting literally sell the entire thing, to the extent that, when I see a mediocre outdoor rollercoaster, I generally think 'You should've just built it inside and turned the lights off and it would've been 10 times better'.

In my opinion, Space Mountain is meant to be experienced with all of its effects, in near-total darkness. The main thing Space Mountain banks on is the unknown. Unless you’ve memorized every part of the track, you’ll never know what’s coming up ahead and that is what gives Space Mountain some, if not most of its intensity.

@@MidnightSonnet Precisely, the screaming for some may be fear, but I'd wager the folks that would be doing that mostly avoid roller coasters. The vast majority of the people screaming on the rides are doing it because it makes it more fun. (I think SM top speed is 27.5mph whilst the cars ride is 40mph & test track can reach 64.7mph!) What makes SM scary is how dark it is, causing unpredictability, how loud it is, how sharp the turns are, how bumpy of a ride it is & the seats! The one at DL is much smoother than this one and the DL car makes you feel MUCH safer! Kinda crazy how they managed to make this one of their “scariest” rides!! Work smarter, not harder!

reminds me of once the ride had to be shut down while i was about halfway through it so all the lights came on and we were escorted out, and realizing just how relatively small the space was (compared to how far it feels like we're going i mean) and seeing all the tracks layered around each other and being reminded that we were just in a large cement room the whole time was really strange. Space Mountain in the dark working as intended is fantastic at atmosphere. Space Mountain with the lights on looks like some dinky ass ride in an abandoned mall.

I was on this (at Disneyland, not -world) when we suddenly stopped in a block section pretty high up. Then the lights came on and they announced that we were going to have to exit due to some issue. Sitting there looking at pretty much the whole track made me really appreciate theming and how it can add a lot to an otherwise mediocre ride.

I went to Disney World 10 years ago on a free 3 day getaway through Granger. The park closed at 9PM, and then opened for 5,000 of us until 3AM. All food and drinks were free including beer and wine. There were no lines at all, and employee's let us take our drinks on the rides if you can believe that! So we got on Space Mountain with full beers. As soon as we went over the top, we all started downing our beers. I got a few gulps down before I got a face full of beer, and have never laughed so hard in my life. Great memories thanks to the employees that looked the other way!

It seems a lot faster when riding in the dark, then this seems with lights on, but this is cool to see!
