  • In the 60s, captioning episode of TV was an expensive business. As Captain Scarlet had so many characters, a larger cast was needed. But with actors coming and going so frequently, it was difficult to establish continuity in the end credits...

    Before the era of home VCR recordings, it was rather difficult for home viewers to spend much time looking at the credits for anything. Blink and it's gone. You had a few people making their own kinescope films. And you had public libraries willing to loan out film projectors and movie reels. My family did this in the early 70s. Until then, I don't think we had a way to just stop what we were watching and even read the credits.

      @OdeeOz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not true. When Captain Scarlet was airing, the credits were still slow enough to read them all.

    I find the opening credits in Captain Scarlet quite interesting with who they chose to include/exclude. Seems they lined Destiny up as being the lead Angel but, throughout the show, Symphony adopted that role more so.

      I was always disappointed that the others never got to do that much. Melody was arguably the most important of the others, but Harmony and Rhapsody barely did anything!

      The books definitely gave all the Angels a fair role compared to the TV show for some reason. The third one in particular has them centre stage.

    Lian-Shin Yang is in the film "The Yangtse Incident" as the Communist Army member that takes all the photographs between the Royal Navy officers and the Army when they keep meeting. From all accounts, she was a talented singer, pianist, painter and translator speaking five different dialects of Chinese - such a shame we lost her to breast cancer in 1970 at an early age

    I thought the title meant you were going to be discussing how Captain Scarlet escaped all those deadly sedations that were depicted in the images of the end credits, not the voice credits, lol. Oh well, it was still an interesting discussion though! :o)

      Charles "Bud" Tingwell continued with a long career in Australia when he returned from the UK. He was in police drama, Homicide. He had a late career as guest star on the Late Show's spoof, "Charlie the Wonder Dog" and in the movie, The Castle. Wonderful actor, greatly missed.

    I think in all eras the general viewer pays little or no attention to the credits and they are present essentially to give due recognition to the actors and production personnel. Most viewers would struggle to tell you appeared in a TV show or film aside from maybe the starring cast and sometimes even then only one or two of them. They might recognise a face or voice but generally pay little attention to names. I certainly think credits are important and that certainly all speaking cast should be credited. It's worth pointing out though that occasionally actors or crew may not want to have an on-screen credit, sometimes out of modesty but in a few instances they may be unhappy with how the production went and don't want to be publicly associated with it.

    2:38 how so? They're puppets, like animation, it shouldn't matter, it's not real.

    • @imfsresidentotaku9699
      @imfsresidentotaku9699 ปีที่แล้ว

      THAT is your justification? A more logical argument would be that actor's job is to be someone they're not. After all, none of it is real because it's a TV show. But to answer your question, this is already the most racially diverse Supermarionation show, and considering that they already had a black actor voicing Lieutenant Green...do I really need to finish this sentence?

  • @animatsuri
    @animatsuri 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Even back then there was a thing as reruns. Although credits at the end were probably more for the actors and crew to show proof of work on their resume than anything the audience cared about as they switched off the TV as the credits rolled..

    • @CaptApril123
      @CaptApril123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, even down to technical jobs on a production..these would be listed on someones CV. As with any industry mistakes in HR can lead to very nasty and expensive lawsuits. By the time Captain Scarlet aired residuals were well established and peopel wouldn't get them if there is no proof they worked on them, again you've possibly got a lawsuit. Credits on a production are extremely important.

    There was also instances where the wrong voice was used for a regular character. For example, in the episode "Flight 104" there's a point where Destiny Angel is reporting on the developments about how Scarlet and Blue had taken the controls but the aircraft wasn't responding. Although the puppet was responding to impulses, the voice of Rhapsody Angel was used in error

    Great show and subject. Another possibility is continuity of production scenes, they may have recorded audio and shot footage out of order, then having to reorder the audio recordings, so details like who recorded what on what day and matching it to the episode being filmed may have been misaligned, as different scenes are filmed and recorded, the final episode as we see wouldn't have existed until the very end.
