Rebuilding a 1998 HBD VT Calais 5.0L Part 1!

- So we picked up this 1998 VT Calais with a HBD kit on it. it's definitely seen better days however the 5L V8 is in awesome condition and runs perfectly, only issue is gearbox is toast. paint is worse for wear so that will need attention and the brakes are non existent...a little different from my euro builds but I'm very pumped about this one...

Thanks Costa, it would have been sad to see this one wrecked for parts which is how it was advertised...I'm a sucker for anything old school aussie muscle
@Oz_Rebuilds yea anything ford or Holden with a 5l is getting hard to find someone would have pulled the conversion for a vn and scrapped the rest haha
Yeah definitely, dad used to own both ford and Holden's back when I was young fella so I love both. As soon as I saw it I went into save mode lol couldn't see it get taken apart. Especially when like you say they are getting very hard to find.
I owned a 98 VT 5.0 9C1 pack that I traded on my 09 VE SSV.
Good car, had the roller motor, FE2, LSD and, bash plate under the sump. Last of the Aussie 5 litres.
A lot of people dont clean a car before selling, baffles the mind

And some even show pride in it. Doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah that's pretty much it man, nor sure if I like the front bar lip but it's slowly groing on me lol...I prefer just the stock ss bar tbh.

Flash backs! Missus had a Capricorn green VT Calais, leased from Holden. Such a nice car when they were brand new.
The Botanica blue, that you have here, is very much a blue/green flip mica.
Probably a 50%-ish chance (depending if it sailed through on day or arvo shift) I painted some part of it on the line haha.

Yes 100% a beautiful car when they came out....i remember seeing my mates mums VT SS when they bought it in 99 it was like next level back then..

such a shame that it has to be painted again but hey it is what it is...will look like the day you painted them when its finished hopefully
I test drove a vt berlina 5l a few months ago, best sounding v8 ever I reckon
@jsaplays33 I agree....I'm an LS guy but this thing is so much better when it comes to sound lol. Slow as shit but man does it give off a nice note

Should be a nice weekend cruiser once it’s been resprayed and fixed up, I like the vt/vx models
That's what I'm hoping for mate, just cruise down to cars and coffee with the family on a Sunday lol. Maybe drive down the coast and back That's about it

The hbd kit was put on by hsv, so the kit will be a hsv one anyway

I'm pretty sure it was part of the manta hbd lip kit...that's a wild assumption but i havnt seen one like it before either so I wouldn't have a clue lol

@@Oz_Rebuilds I've always wanted a V8 wagon so bad, i have a VF sv6 black edition now and was thinking of dropping a LS in it but by time you do everything i could just buy a SSV redline haha, some day ill get a older holden with a V8 and keep it for a long time

Saw this one on marketplace, was a really good buy considering how rare these commodores are with the factory optioned manta style hbd body kit. I own an ls1 vt hbd executive with that exact same body kit in the tungsten colour but it also has a manta rear wing. they are rare gems

Love this vid. Looking forward to more. Doing the same to VT SS 98. Just done the whole rear end. Rubbers, shocks, diff reco'd with m80 8 inch. I should do a vid on it I think.

@@Oz_Rebuilds putting in a Vy head liner too. Comes with the rear curiosity lights and the sun Glasser holder. Just plugs in

Boot spoiler is part of the HBD kit, and SBS in the tag is what denotes it.
yep sure is.....now to find one lol thats the hard part. the little spoiler it had on it is almost impossible

Hey nice video! So this Holden looks suspiciously very much like a car we'd call a Opel Senator here in Europe and even Opel Omega details are in there as well... Both of there Opel cars however were never equipped with a V8 here in Europe. Cadillac USA however did a version of the Opel Omega, maybe even with a V8, I am not sure.
Hi mate yes definitely opel omega and senator...I'm originally from Europe and used to live there for a while so I know the cars your taking about hahaha they ate the euro version. Pretty sure there was even a station wagon

We had panel shop for 20 years. From memory it was bad imported clear coat.
I had a 99 V6 supercharged version of this...loved the car, had nicer dark grey all leather interior with cream white paint...

Just subbed. Love that this is a 5.0. I think being a 1998 and 5.0 the tail lights should have amber lenses and also the guard indicators should be amber. I could be wrong thou? Its got series 2 lights fitted atm.
to be honest i can not remember, i think the calais had clear but then again i could also be wrong...

VT HSV got tow bar. Y would U not. I keep the exhaust, sound better than my stock exhaust. Cheers Graham
@theaussienurseflipper.8113 the tow bar wasn't there unfortunately...it it was I probably would have kept it to tow the jetski. Yeah I like the exhaust it will stay

Shes stock and registered so plan is paint and give the engine a freshen up as has over 300+ aiming around 400 to 420 which should be peice of piss but so its drivable for the misso too ill deffs be following ur build as might be copying alot🤣

300 is nothing for ls1 u see alot of high km still loving life! When its done should deffs organise a cruise as in perth too

Leave the wind screen out while you paint that way the rubber isn't in the way you will get a cleaner/ nicer finish and just find a better bonnet without dents easier to just change
Yep windscreen is staying out and I'll find another bonnet for sure
Liked....long live the 5l . Do you think there is much performance benefits between the after market headers vs the stock ones.
im pretty sure there is however i will be putting it on the dyno to see what it makes.... pretty sure i should be able to find stock dyno figures so we should see what the difference is....ofcourse there will differences in engines and stuff but we should get a rough figure of the power difference.

She's got the wrong steering wheel and hand brake cover for a Calais. Both are meant to be leather😊
I did notice that. It definitely is a calais as I have the books and the vin matches it but not sure what happened to the steering wheel. Also the shifter should have a chrome button I think

I hate watching amateurs detail a car. They waste time and money on rubbish products and ineffective practices. But they are so proud of themselves.
Thats why i pay for detailers hahaha i was just cleaning it up so it isnt so bad. itll be fully detailed after
