lol it certainly began with high ideals, but like many revolutions based upon violence, violence soon devoured it: Robespierre more or less declared himself dictator, and proceeded to behave like a typical dictator: ruling through violence, death and terror. Then Napoleon happened: a magalomaniac who quickly declared himself Emperor then proceeded to try to conquer all of Europe... lasted longer than most would-be emperors of Europe, but caused uncounted deaths and misery and insane wars.... then it was over!! That said, the French Revolution DID give us some good literature and the metric system......

The battle of Mohacs wasn't a battle between Habsburgs and the Ottomans. It was a Battle between the then independent Kingdom of Hungary and the Ottomans. In this battle King Louis of Hungary died and after that Habsburgs laid claim on Hungary.

I find the late 1700s France to be highly reminiscent of the late Roman republic, with Napoleon as Caesar, virtually having the true power and creating an empire.

    • @dayvancubensis

It reminds me of Qin Dynasty China (221-206 BCE), along with its founding emperor (and essentially last emperor) Qin Shi Huang. Qin Shi Huang embarked on a series of campaigns to conquer and unite the several warring states around China, and succeeded. Upon uniting the seven warring states, the Emperor instituted a series of edicts and reforms with the intention of creating a centralized political structure, modernizing his large military, and promoting trade and commerce. He introduced a standardized currency, a standardized system of writing (very important, because the different states contained a vast array of differing dialects and methods of transcribing them), and standardized systems of weights and measures. If you noticed, however, the Qin Dynasty was an incredibly brief dynasty, considering the following dynasty, the Han Dynasty, lasted around 400 years.
Going back to Napoleon, I pick up on some parallels between him and Qin Shi Huang. Both went on massive campaigns to unite the many different states of a large landmass and create an empire, both left behind social and political legacies of reforms and codes which stuck around even after their rule had ended, and both of their empires that they had built up so quickly fell apart without them. Of course, there are myriad reasons why they are not similar. However I think their stories and their legacies resonate with each other on a historical archetype level.

Interesting.. I don't know much about China's history, so I can't really provide an input. Perhaps instead, both Caesar and Napoleon are reminiscent of Qin Shi.

The Roman Republic created a lot of the Empire. The Roman and French Empires where completely different. A better understanding of Roman culture would show that many small cities entered the Roman Republic voluntarily. Under Roman Law/Religion, no outsider territories were conquered without provocation.
