I'm part French and Dutch. I would probably still be living in France today but France didn't want Huguenots so my family left for the Netherlands in 1567 when the second civil war started. My ancestors were from Normandy and were of the nobility.They came to America in 1653 sailing on the Bonte Koe. My great grandfathers worked for the Dutch West India Company. One was Magistrate of Haarlem and the other was Peter Stuyvesant's adjutant. They were wealthy men. One owned 5000 acres in Bergen County in New Jersey the other was the founder of Woodbury New Jersey. France lost a fortune in trade when all of its merchants and tradesmen left. They took the leather, glove, millinery, gold and silver smithing (Faberge and Revere and others) to other countries which got richer while France got poorer.

Yay another great documentary! You should do the Scandinavian countries next! When people say the French are a nation that surrenders, and loses a lot of wars need to check Frances score card. They have won a lot more than they have lost, and this “French surrendering meme” that’s going around is kind of pointless. You simply can’t judge a nations entire history on one battle in 1940, which most “Americans” do anyway. They’re like any nation and have had its fair share of losses, but it’s not to the extent that people make it out to be. The French have always had a top grade army and military. It’s simply poor and ineffective leadership at certain times that plagued its military from conducting effective campaigns and wars.
Yes exactly! America and others shame Germany so much with what happened during the holocaust. We simply need to look at ourselves for a minute a realize that we murdered over 20 million native peoples, and enslaved millions of Africans, but as of everything negative the so called “good guy” allied nations due it’s simply swept under the rug. @Hardy Harhar The Americans arrived in 1917, they had to be trained for months and equiped (by the French) before being sent to the front and they only really participated to the allied operations from september 1918 and often under french command. The idea that WW1 was won by or thanks to the US soldiers while the French were cowering up somewhere is video game revisionism. France bore the absolute brunt of the war effort in WW1. In 1919 it was obvious for everyone that the french army had won the war, at what cost is another story.

People just argue that these migrants are an economic encumberance on the nation. The fall from global hegemony happened before the migrants. I wouldn’t give Louis the Pious such a minor role in history. Yes, he was not a warrior at heart, but he was determined to keep the state intact with its force. Before being Emperor, he had already seized Barcelona from the Umayyads as a commander. As Emperor, he would reform the army and the navy, plus consolidating the vast empire instead of renewed campaign, which was a necessity by this point. The birth of a new son, Charles (later known as “the Bald”), created tension between Louis’ sons. Before, they were mostly content with their inheritance, but this new brother was seen as a breaking of the status quo (a concern for the titles they would receive), which lead to their rebellion. Initially, Louis had the upper hand as a commander and as the emperor himself. Most of the population supported him, and the infighting between his sons never really allowed them to agree on the outcomes of war. Eventually, they were successful, forcing Louis to abdicate. However, again, infighting ensued and he was able to regain his throne through treachery between his sons (Louis the German would switch sides and honor his father, allowing him to regain the throne again). He dealt major defeats to his disobedient sons in the end, but due to his pious nature (especially towards his family, though not to rebellious common nobleman, as he was quite cruel in nature for such things), he spared his sons on all occasions. Due to this, and the fact that they were definitely not in a militarily advantageous state as before, submitted to their father and obeyed all commands afterwards, never to rebel again. Louis the Pious, though known for the many crisis that occurred during his reign, stabilized the internal structure of the country, kept his rivals at bay, and led the country to notable victories for the time. Also, he was, just as his father Charlemagne, recognized as Emperor, as he had requested to be crowned after he gained the throne.

You can make the same argument for almost everywhere. Most of France's early enemies were French themselves. They came into conflict with England over throne disputes (the English kings at the time all decendants from earlier French lines). The Germans and Italians for the most part didn't intervene in inner French affairs. It was rather the other way around. French kings took advantage of inner struggles in the HRE to gain more power. Germany only became a problem for France in the 19th and 20th century.

Nice one, especially on Charlemagne, but more than 1-2% of people could read and write in western Europe before the Carolingian Renaissance- maybe 10%? Remember, Ireland, Aquitaine, Brittany, etc, had monastic centres of learning and small regional courts of literacy. You made a mistake when discussing the English anarchy. Henry II(fitzempress) was crowned in 1154 and his mother Matilda was certainly still alive and played a key role in his early reign. She survived another 13 years until 1167.

Even after the monarchy started to refer to themselves as "french" instead of franks they still saw the frankish kings as their predecessor and a lot of early France's identity was built on everything surrounding Clovis so it seems pretty logical to start with Clovis if you want to really explain where the identity of the nation comes from.

Otherwise excellent video, it’s great to learn about France’s history, other than the revolutions, restorations, barricades going up, going down, repeat, repeat! I ordered a “Complete History of France” once, and the author said prior to the revolution, there were a lot of kings, that’s not important, then started the book from the revolution!

I'm part French and Dutch. I would probably still be living in France today but France didn't want Huguenots so my family left for the Netherlands in 1567 when the second civil war started. My ancestors were from Normandy and were of the nobility.They came to America in 1653 sailing on the Bonte Koe. My great grandfathers worked for the Dutch West India Company. One was Magistrate of Haarlem and the other was Peter Stuyvesant's adjutant. They were wealthy men. One owned 5000 acres in Bergen County in New Jersey the other was the founder of Woodbury New Jersey.
France lost a fortune in trade when all of its merchants and tradesmen left. They took the leather, glove, millinery, gold and silver smithing (Faberge and Revere and others) to other countries which got richer while France got poorer.

When people say the French are a nation that surrenders, and loses a lot of wars need to check Frances score card. They have won a lot more than they have lost, and this “French surrendering meme” that’s going around is kind of pointless. You simply can’t judge a nations entire history on one battle in 1940, which most “Americans” do anyway. They’re like any nation and have had its fair share of losses, but it’s not to the extent that people make it out to be. The French have always had a top grade army and military. It’s simply poor and ineffective leadership at certain times that plagued its military from conducting effective campaigns and wars.
Yes exactly! America and others shame Germany so much with what happened during the holocaust. We simply need to look at ourselves for a minute a realize that we murdered over 20 million native peoples, and enslaved millions of Africans, but as of everything negative the so called “good guy” allied nations due it’s simply swept under the rug. Just like stalins regime that killed over 20 million of his own people, but nobody cares about that. Or the British, French, Spanish, and Portuguese empires murdering millions of native peoples around the world, but yet again it’s ignored, and all focus still to this day just hammers at what Germany did in the Second World War.
@Hardy Harhar The Americans arrived in 1917, they had to be trained for months and equiped (by the French) before being sent to the front and they only really participated to the allied operations from september 1918 and often under french command. The idea that WW1 was won by or thanks to the US soldiers while the French were cowering up somewhere is video game revisionism. France bore the absolute brunt of the war effort in WW1. In 1919 it was obvious for everyone that the french army had won the war, at what cost is another story.

Florian A. No, I’ve never heard anyone say that migrants are what caused the ”downfall” of France on the global stage. People just argue that these migrants are an economic encumberance on the nation. The fall from global hegemony happened before the migrants. What these people do argue however, is that overall France has lost what it once had. No global hegemony anymore, decline in tradition and the lost respect for the nation itself.
And also just to clarify, we can’t see the stats on France due to the laws prohibiting them but the migrants in Europe, generally, are negative in almost every metric you can find. In most situations the immigrants from Africa and the Middle East have an unemployment rate of over 50%. In some cases like Somalis it’s around 70-80%, the latter in my country of Finland. We’ve spent millions in these integration programs and improved their employment rates by about 2-5%.
In crimes they are overrepresented to a staggering degree, like being 30% of rapes while being 5% of the population.
The amount of migrants in Finland increased dramatically in 2015, and since then I’ve seen surveillance cameras pop up in the cities like mushrooms after a rainy autumn day. It has been a massive economic strain for us to beef up security services and policing just because of them, basically.

I wouldn’t give Louis the Pious such a minor role in history. Yes, he was not a warrior at heart, but he was determined to keep the state intact with its force. Before being Emperor, he had already seized Barcelona from the Umayyads as a commander. As Emperor, he would reform the army and the navy, plus consolidating the vast empire instead of renewed campaign, which was a necessity by this point. The birth of a new son, Charles (later known as “the Bald”), created tension between Louis’ sons. Before, they were mostly content with their inheritance, but this new brother was seen as a breaking of the status quo (a concern for the titles they would receive), which lead to their rebellion. Initially, Louis had the upper hand as a commander and as the emperor himself. Most of the population supported him, and the infighting between his sons never really allowed them to agree on the outcomes of war. Eventually, they were successful, forcing Louis to abdicate. However, again, infighting ensued and he was able to regain his throne through treachery between his sons (Louis the German would switch sides and honor his father, allowing him to regain the throne again). He dealt major defeats to his disobedient sons in the end, but due to his pious nature (especially towards his family, though not to rebellious common nobleman, as he was quite cruel in nature for such things), he spared his sons on all occasions. Due to this, and the fact that they were definitely not in a militarily advantageous state as before, submitted to their father and obeyed all commands afterwards, never to rebel again. Louis the Pious, though known for the many crisis that occurred during his reign, stabilized the internal structure of the country, kept his rivals at bay, and led the country to notable victories for the time. Also, he was, just as his father Charlemagne, recognized as Emperor, as he had requested to be crowned after he gained the throne.

You can make the same argument for almost everywhere. Most of France's early enemies were French themselves. They came into conflict with England over throne disputes (the English kings at the time all decendants from earlier French lines). The Germans and Italians for the most part didn't intervene in inner French affairs. It was rather the other way around. French kings took advantage of inner struggles in the HRE to gain more power.
Germany only became a problem for France in the 19th and 20th century.

Nice one, especially on Charlemagne, but more than 1-2% of people could read and write in western Europe before the Carolingian Renaissance- maybe 10%? Remember, Ireland, Aquitaine, Brittany, etc, had monastic centres of learning and small regional courts of literacy. I liked the tie up with England and Normandy, explained from the viewpoint of France and Normandy.

You made a mistake when discussing the English anarchy. Henry II(fitzempress) was crowned in 1154 and his mother Matilda was certainly still alive and played a key role in his early reign. She survived another 13 years until 1167.

Yes godzilla ,french do thé same over Belgium with their " belges stories " but you know french love belges !!!! My wife and aunt are ! Same prob with UK and US use to laugh on frenchies ,but WE do love Brits résistance over the huns ,and twice US help in thé last ( and more) two WW .clever people don't mind AT all .AT 20 with my girlfriend i did wanted to live in UK' s country !!

The most interesting thing about any documentary on France is the year in which the author chose to start it.
True. But among french people it is mostly agreed it starts with Clovis.
This is the most obvious and logic, you cannot explain how France was born without explaining the Franks.. :)
Even after the monarchy started to refer to themselves as "french" instead of franks they still saw the frankish kings as their predecessor and a lot of early France's identity was built on everything surrounding Clovis so it seems pretty logical to start with Clovis if you want to really explain where the identity of the nation comes from.
