Jalen Rose was definitely a solid player in his prime, he smoked the Lakers in that Game 5. But Rik Smits guarding Shaq was barbecue chicken.
Anyone guarding Shaq was lol. Just 1 year later DPOY Dikembe Mutombo got decimated by the Big Diesel too

@@Ehh-nx7nk You spittin facts, it was definitely a strategy and team effort there. Ben Wallace was excellent no question though, I’d probably put older Sabonis slightly above Ben Wallace though… He stifled the MVP “I will eat your children” Shaq in that 2000 WCF.
@@rayw8363 Yeah, teams that had multiple talented, physical big men could slow down Shaq. No individual player, though, could wing it alone. Indiana also had Dale Davis to help, but one of those two guys fouled out in games 1-4 and Smits had five in both games 5-6. You had to guard prime Shaq by committee.

Many people didn't know that the Pacers were even in the finals because Jordan stopped playing and people stopped watching basketball for a while.
I started following hoops because of Fab Five. Their story on 30 for 30 is mandatory for any basketball fan. So good. Detroiters ALWAYS have an "us against the world" mentality.
Jalen is one of us.

I think someone made a video about it, and most of Kobes 81 points weren't on Rose at all, not that it really matters for his legacy, but it's interesting the dude who actually defended Kobe the most on those shots got a little lucky and never got trash talked for it

My neighbors named their firstborn Jalen after Rose and 2nd was Travis after Travis Best…. We love our Pacers.
He was very good when played correctly. 20+5+5 guy in his prime. I remember when he and Reggie got 40 a piece in the finals... rivals what Curry and Klay does these days. very good player. respect.

Larry Bird brought out the best version of Jalen Rose. It's a shame that Bird had to retire from coaching with his health problems. Seeing Bird coach Stephen Jackson, Jermaine O'Neal, and Ron Artest would have been interesting. I think that Bird would have really appreciated those guys and maybe the Pacers would have been more successful.

Toronto didn't have much talent after Carter left. Jalen Rose was basically a shooter and past his prime by that point in time

Love to see videos like this on the more underappreciated NBA players. Would really love to see a "How good was Mike Bibby actually" and Shareef Abdur-Rahim sometime. Both were very underrated imo.
You're the only other person to call out the most underrated player in the NBA. Shareef Abdul Rahim. His stats are better than Rasheed Wallace.
@@younglove3362 yeah man, Reef was an amazing player. I'm from Vancouver and he was our star player. I'm glad he made at least one all star appearance but had he played on some better teams I think his career would have been way different.

Howard was on the all rookie team, an Allstar and all nba. Rose had a bigger role when his team went to the finals, but Howard is the only player from the fab 5 with rings
@@KB-qk1ic I think you can make the argument that as the leading scorer on a team that made it to the Finals and had a chance to win it all, Jalen's peak accomplishments are more significant than Juwan Howard's All-Star and 3rd-team All-NBA nod for a losing team that missed the playoffs.

Wow it all makes sense now about the lack of small forward talent in the early 2000s NBA. There just weren’t any star forward wings during that time. Some might say TMac but he was mostly a SG during that era and wasn’t a SF until he came to Houston. The game was definitely slower and big man oriented back then. It wasn’t until LeBron when we got a superstar small forward

Jalen Rose was a dope hooper a 6 foot 8 versatile player on offense who could do some of everything on.offense. He still holds the Denver Nuggets rookie assists record. Prime example of players career being impacted by who the coach is whom you play with and who controls the narrative about you. Confidence is key and he a Midwest hooper

Hmm, how about how GOOD was Larry Bird? Not him as a player, but him in the front office (Coach, GM, etc.)
He was inconsistent. Even in his peak in Chicago and Indiana, Jalen Rose was a guy who could drop an efficient 30 point one night and then disappear the next game.

TIL that Jalen was 6’8”. I feel like he always exerted short guard energy so I always thought he was around 6’2” lol.
Jalen was a good player, he ALWAYS had outstanding teams that he played on. His senior year at Southwestern High School that entire roster went D1. In college much of the same, he played with a ton a talented players.
It was a different role in the pros, he rarely had the opportunities to play Jalen Rose basketball. The NBA disrespected him as a player because of the pride that he had within himself. Jalen NEVER had to be humble because his high school and college teams were SO GREAT.

Yeah he didn't become an All-Star but he corralled a really good career.
He was smooth. And he was 6-7. He was a lefty and he could about do it all. I think he would have been a bigger star if he played today

I'm not a Kobe apologist in the least. I get annoyed when people say Kobe should've won MVP in 2000 because of his game 4 heroics. Still, I have to point out that Kobe's per-game numbers in the 2000 Finals look bad because Rose took out his ankle and Kobe finished game 2 with only 2 points in 8 minutes played. If you removed game 2, Kobe averaged 19 ppg that series.
On top of that, Kobe's ankle was injured badly enough that he missed the rest of game 2 and all of game 3, so I'm going to assume his numbers would've been even better if Rose didn't injure Kobe.
(BTW, the fact that the Lakers won game 2 despite essentially not having Kobe seems to be worth pointing out to the guys who only look at game 4).
Jalen was crafty, he hustled and maximized his skills, much like he has maximized his opportunities since he retired.. gets on my nerves at times, but he's authentic..
