  • From Chiang Mai Thailand to the USA. Reverse culture shock. Things are different and so are prices. When you live out of the country for awhile and you return, things can be overwhelming.

I returned to NH last month for a family visit, after a 4 year period of not returning. Like yourself, I was shocked by the prices. I walked through the grocery store with my jaw hanging open. And a simple meal in a restaurant was double what it was when I was last there. All I could think was how do the lower paid residents live under those conditions, not to mention skyrocketing rents. I appreciate my life in Thailand even more than before, and , as much as I loved my time with family, I couldn’t wait to get back to affordable Chiang Mai.

It’s really nice that you got a chance to meet up with your friends and family members. You blew me away about the cost of that $70 ride - I’m amazed anyone paid that for a one time deal. The cost of living is the main reason I am leaving the U.S. in January. I am taking my retirement in U.S. dollars and basically doubling my money in Thailand. Lower housing costs, better and healthier food, and less stress. I love the U.S., but it’s just not worth living here anymore when there are better options.

Good for you ! Nice and interesting to experience all (several anyway) the differences between Tland and the US, always felt refreshing being in Tland and having to return to US somewhat desultory and felt really refreshed in Tland when the former president was in office, it was soooo good to be away from even hearing his name mentioned but that is only one great benefit of travel..good to see all your kids, relatives, and friends for a “ketchup” session..if I’m back in CM next year I’ll drop a wedding gift off..kop for vid 🙏🏻🕊🇹🇭 p.s. hope you have a good return trip 👍🏻

    Reverse Culture Shock is real.
I came back to the US from Chiang Mai in March of 2020. Going to my local convenience store/gas station and seeing "Pumpkin Spice Latte" ...in MARCH??? Cinnamon, Vanilla and Pumpkin in everything and the smell of it all year round in America is just weird!

I appreciate your comparison with both country prices. However, you forget that salary is much higher in the States as in Thailand. Of course you can live like a king in Thailand with your US income.
