    I would also include 'saving face' as Thai people never want to lose face.

    Because I am Thai, some of these culture shocks would be reverse culture shocks for me. The worst one is riding motorbike or driving around motorcycles. 😲

    The thing that stuns me is strangers ask; where are you going? And they don’t even know me. Next thing is; they charge foreigners MORE than they charge locals. Oh; many die here on motor bikes. Deadly streets… bad drivers. Are the norm here.

    Enjoyed learning few things from this one. Our family lives watching your channel. Moving there in September of next year. Isn't that the lowest tourest season? From AZ in US so heat is the norm lol😂 also enjoy the houses you show. I'm hoping one of them will be open. We will make sure to get ahold of Alice closer to that time i check her site regularly to get ideas of what we want for sure. When you went did you stay in hotel while you looked for your rental?

    • @TheNarrowGate
      @TheNarrowGate  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you for watching. And that’s awesome that you are moving here next September. Yes, that’s definitely the low season.
      We actually found a home online and rented it through Alice before we moved here…when we were still in the States. We really wanted to have a place to move into right away since we have 2 dogs we brought with us. However I would suggest staying in a hotel or Airbnb for a few weeks and looking at properties in person before signing a lease. Congrats on your upcoming move! ☺️😎 🇹🇭

    Here in Thailand 8 years now. No police officer at checkpoint or anywhere else has ever asked to see my passport. In fact, at checkpoints the only thing I have ever been asked is 'where you go ?' I always reply 'going to big c to buy food' and they wave me right on thru.

    Dentists in Thailand are honest! No ripoff upcharging!

    • @timtim4525
      @timtim4525 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I fly to Hanoi, VN for dental work… it’s half the price that Thai dentists charge… only get cleaning done in Thailand. I save money by flying to VN by getting a crown and get a free vacation by not letting Thai Dentists do it. But yes it’s super lots cheaper in Thailand over what the rip off usa dentists charge. A crown in VN IS; 200 bucks…usa it’s 1500 usd. Thailand it’s 400 bucks. These are facts!

    The Thai medical system is a mixed bag. Generally, it's considered inferior to what you might find in the US. The pricing is also varied. If you opt for basic medical services from government hospitals, it will be affordable. However, if you want top-tier medical care, you'll pay prices comparable to those in the US for many services. On the other hand, almost everyone I know, including myself, has medical insurance in the US. Delivering a baby in the US at the best hospitals with my medical insurance cost my wife and me about $3k in total. This included over 10 checkups, blood tests, ultrasounds, and the delivery. A similar service in Thailand would cost us almost double what we paid in the US. Even with Thai medical insurance that covers treatment at premier hospitals, such as Bumrungrad, the costs wouldn't be any less. Broadly speaking, many Thai hospitals face challenges in terms of competence. Wealthy Thais often prefer high-end clinics over hospitals.

      I totally disagree with you… Thai Drs in Thailand are fantastic. Prices are tons cheaper too. I respect you but you are totally wrong… in my experience. If have insurance in Thailand. Yearly. Prices are around 2,000 usd per year. Can go up to 4,000 usd a year. And I’m 61. Only catch is need to keep this insurance constantly. If try to trick them here it won’t work…. I bet you didn’t get big medical done here… if you did you’d know I’m right!

      @@timtim4525 I’m 36 with a family and we had a baby delivered at a high priced facility. Long story but it wasn’t ideal (price wise), however, the service was tremendous. I can’t express how excellent it was.
      That said, now that we’re more established, we’ve gone exclusively to local hospitals (far from the big cities) and outpatient facilities and we’ve only had great results.

    • @VidNibs

      @@timtim4525 You seem to be misinformed. It's my experience that only Thai doctors working in high-end private hospitals like Bumrungrad are competent - and even then, they are merely good, not exceptional. In contrast, Thai government hospitals can be quite frightening due to what appears to be widespread incompetence; often, it seems they have no clue what they're doing. Moreover, there seems to be little consequence for errors. It appears you might not have extensive experience with Thai hospitals to speak so highly of them. I've lived in Thailand for nearly seven years with my Thai spouse, and our interactions with various hospitals, for matters ranging from pregnancy-related care to tuberculosis treatment, have been overwhelmingly disappointing.
      Additionally, I question your definition of 'affordable.' Spending $2,000 to $4,000 per year on insurance does not seem economical, especially in a developing country with a healthcare system that doesn't meet the standards I am accustomed to. At 43, having had medical insurance through my employment in the U.S. for two decades, I have never paid more than $100 to $150 annually. At present, my biweekly payments with Blue Cross are nominal - $2 for medical, $1.50 for dental, and $1 for vision. Such rates, with access to premium hospitals, are unimaginable in Thailand.
      I challenge you to use Thai insurance at Bumrungrad - reputedly the best hospital in Southeast Asia - and share the outcome. I suspect they will laugh in your face. Prices there are higher than US hospitals.
