    One of the best things about Justin's lessons are the multiple skill levels he teaches to. As a beginner, I learned the chords and now returning to the video 2 1/2 years later while following his fingerstyle module, I am starting to be able to play it more authentically Thanks Justin and Happy New Year!

      This song is great for beginners and whatever level your at there's a version that will suit you. You can start with the chords and basic strum pattern and then as you progress with your skill level you can take on the more complex fingerstyle techniques.To play exactly what's recorded on the original is far more complex than it seems at first but stick with it my friend and you'll be a master on the guitar given some time.

    Great tutorial, thanks Justin. Sounds such a simple song when strumming chords, then you get into the fingerpicking and it’s so much more complex than I ever thought. After hours of struggle I can play that riff at about 1/4 speed, and as soon as I start thinking about it I go wrong! And you sing at the same time...amazing

    I’m a fairly solid finger picker. I can boom-chic and Travis pretty well...but the signature lick in this song is really starting to piss me off. 2 hours of playing 12 notes in 2 measures and I still can’t find the groove! Ahhhhh. I will find it and I will own it...soon.

    • @Evlo80
      @Evlo80 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel you bro. I have the same issue. I can play the groove somewhat correctly at 0.8 speed, but I have no chance at regular speed. I think im going to get the transcribing software me mentioned to slow down the original, to get the groove down, and not use tabs on UG.

    • @subversion6066
      @subversion6066 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evlo80 So I did the whole metronome thing...played it painfully slow and just kept clicking up the metronome when I could play it smoothly. After about 1000 times muscle memory finally kicked in. Listen to Miley Cyrus “the back yard sessions Jolene”. Excellent way to hear the riff and they play it slightly slower than Dolly Parton...whom, is in fact, Miley Cyrus’s Godmother. Also search Cyrus Parton Jolene and they perform a duet. Gold luck. Tick, tick, tick...

    I am 51 years old and returning to the guitar after 30+ years. Somehow I still know the Travis pick pattern used here and I am still rather fast with it ( from several years of playing Freight Train and Dust in the Wind ). But my left-hand finger tips still need to get hard because I get grooves indented from holding the strings so when I lift off that A minor chord I pluck all the strings with the grooves. Also the hammer-on is mushy sounding. But the pattern and timing, probably the most crucial parts, came to me quite easily.

    Everyone's consistently got this riff all wrong. I just studied the live performance at the Grand Ole Opry House in 1974 and the
    Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum's interview of Chip Young and he is definitely incorporating the low E string in this intro riff, as well as the high E string. Specifically, he is thumb picking the strings 4 5 4 6 4 5 4 6, etc. I need someone better to help me figure out the rest!

    The 33 rpm slowed down version is my favourite version of this song.
    It's also roughly in tune in G#m

    For a 40%beginner it s a little dificult. For me to learn this kind of fingerstyle i must practice a least 2 days 🤦‍♂️😂
