Fastidious Horses O'er a sheer drop, up against the void, along the very border, I am lashing wayward horses with a horsewhip, urging on them: Getting somehow out of air, gulping wind and gobbling fog, I’m Sensing in a fatal rapture: I'm a goner, I'm a goner!
Do slow down a little, horses! Do slow down just a bit! Don't obey a taut whip! Beg you, don't! Yet that the horses should have fallen so unruly to me - Short of time to live up, coming short with the song...
I will water my steeds, I will finish the song, I will stand just a bit At the back of beyond...
Should I die, a gale will sweep me off the hand flat like a feather, And the sleigh will take me, racing by the snowfield at the daybreak. Don’t you tear along, my horses, change to an unhurried canter! Just a little but prolong the journey to the final haven!
Do slow down a little, horses! Do slow down just a bit! Heed you neither a whip, nor a thong.
Yet that the horses should have fallen so unruly to me, Short of time to live up, coming short with the song...
I will water my steeds, I will finish the song, I will stand just a bit At the back of beyond...
We're on time: you’re never late to pay a visit to the Savior; Then why are angels chanting up there with dispraising, angry yelling? If it is a harness bell that’s choking in a bitter wailing? If it’s I who’s urging horses so they quit this headlong sleighing?
Do slow down a little, horses! Do slow down just a bit! I beseech you to not fly headlong! Yet that the horses should have fallen so unruly to me, Once there's no time to live, at least to finish the song...
I will water my steeds, I will finish the song, I will stand just a bit At the back of beyond...
The name of Vladimir Vysotsky (actor, singer, poet, composer) is a legend in Russia. He was a popular favorite, died in 1980. You need to understand the context of the time when Vysotsky lived and worked, you need to understand the rebellious nature of Vysotsky in order to understand the true meaning of these allegorical verses. The text says about disobedient fastidious horses that carry the hero to the cliff at full speed. Of course, Vysotsky had in mind his own life, which he disposed of in a very contradictory way. Always on the edge, always to rupture the aorta (he sang as if he was dying in a scream with every song), always to the maximum in everything. Nonconformist at its maximum. The author did not want to fall into the abyss, but he constantly whipped his horses, bringing his own death closer ... He did not spare himself, did not spare his health, did not spare his loved ones. For another 8 years he stood on the edge of the cliff ... Vysotsky died at 42 (8 years after he wrote this song), without any doubt having driven his horses.
The meaning of this song of the great V.S. Vysotsky is that our life is very fleeting and we all will one day find ourselves on its edge. And no matter how we try to postpone this final moment of life, we will all get to the judgment of God in time. But "... why do angels sing with such evil voices ???" Do you think that you are living your life as a righteous person? And horses, sleighs, snow is a beautiful arrangement of the meaning of the song
I think "Finicky" and "Fastidious" is not quite right. "Unruly" or "Capricious" would be better as it's a metaphor for how unpredictable life can be, and how ultimately out of our control it finally is when facing death. Diana nails it big time, the rage and despair of it all as the "capricious horses" that drag our lives along threaten to drag us over the edge. Diana really is a once-in-several-generations performer that the world should recognise and cherish accordingly.
I think that 'unruly' fits the best. Although, that doesn't accurately describe the horses. It only represents the label that he pins on them. He is blaming the horses for obeying his whip.
@@franks9432 But even if you take the view that he's complaining that the horses are being too subordinate and should show some initiative and not follow his whip so blindly then "fastidious" is still not the right word choice.
@@tradeon3451 Maybe, but now I've fully grasped what's happening here I think the word is "Obdurate". Though "Obdurate Horses" doesn't really have much of a ring to it, not least of all because many folks won't know what it means.
👍 That song ('Fastidious Horse') is a tragic-philosophical song, one of Vysotsky's most intimate songs: Horses are a symbol of the capers and the speed of life. The song is a cry for life, but also a 'catastrophic joy' for the end. The hero of the song drives horses along a cliff over an abyss through wind and fog. He feels that the end is near and asks the horses not to obey the whip and to gallop 'a little slower'. He dreams of standing on the sidelines for a moment to water the horses. He hasn't had time to live and can't even finish his song. Although the song describes a quick jump, it was written at a leisurely pace. Vysotsky based the song on old Russian melodies with gypsy folklore. He always played his songs on a 7-string guitar. Who was the songwriter? Vladimir Semjonovich Vysotsky (1938-1980) was a Russian poet, actor and singer. Vysotsky was an extremely inconvenient poet and singer for the state. In his songs he sang about topics that officially did not exist in the Soviet Union: prostitution, crime, anti-Semitism. He is still known today in Russia, where he is considered the greatest songwriter of the 20th century. Vysotsky's funeral took place during the Moscow Olympics. The Soviet media did not mention his death. But the news spread like wildfire, and the funeral turned into the largest non-state demonstration Moscow had ever seen. In 1987 he was posthumously awarded the State Prize of the USSR. In a 2018 survey of the most important personalities in Russia of the 20th century, Vysotsky came in second behind Yuri Gagarin. The asteroid of the outer main belt (2374, Vladvysotskij) was named after him. (Wiki) Here you can hear him: th-cam.com/video/TtjzVievnXQ/w-d-xo.html&feature=emb_logo

Sweet lady - don't read subtitles... Unfortunately, they do not convey the meaning and emotionality of the work at all. The Russian language is very variable, and here it is very important - to understand the horror of flying at breakneck speed on horses of fate directly to the death of the poet... This is the fate of Vladimir Vysotsky - the author of this and many other songs that can be understood - only by speaking Russian. However, the same as the works of Sergei Yesenin. But emotions are really very vividly conveyed - the great power of art!

O'er a sheer drop, up against the void, along the very border,
I am lashing wayward horses with a horsewhip, urging on them:
Getting somehow out of air, gulping wind and gobbling fog, I’m
Sensing in a fatal rapture: I'm a goner, I'm a goner!
Do slow down a little, horses! Do slow down just a bit!
Don't obey a taut whip! Beg you, don't!
Yet that the horses should have fallen so unruly to me -
Short of time to live up, coming short with the song...
I will water my steeds,
I will finish the song,
I will stand just a bit
At the back of beyond...
Should I die, a gale will sweep me off the hand flat like a feather,
And the sleigh will take me, racing by the snowfield at the daybreak.
Don’t you tear along, my horses, change to an unhurried canter!
