Mitochondria are the cell’s energy powerhouses. These mighty organelles were acquired through an endosymbiotic event that happened over a billion years ago. The mitochondria host biochemical reactions that convert the energy in the food we eat into a cellular energy currency, ATP. This lecture will provide a broad overview of the series of energy transformations that power our cells, and ultimately sustain life.
