    34:24 Putting an animal down is already hard enough even when you know it has to be done, I can't imagine what it was like having people tell you that you killed him. That's horrible. I already think about the things I could've done differently or that I made a mistake, I don't know what I would do if I had people telling me that. I'm sorry you had to go through that. You're an incredibly strong person and a huge aspiration to me as a young rider. You give me hope that I'll reach my goals despite financial shit and general life getting in the way. Love your videos and blog.

    Aw, I remember when you had Dallas and I remember Farley and Maya too! I really admire how you are able to look back at yourself and be critical of how you used to handle and treat horses sometimes, without losing sight of the fact that you were just a young person doing what they were taught. Not everybody is able to outgrow the ways of wanting to do it fast and taking shortcuts rather than taking your time and being patient for results, that really speaks for your character Shelby. I wish more equestrians were able to admit that we’ve not always done right by horses, even if it was with the best of intentions we can still be wrong. You are a wonderful horse person and trainer and I’ve really enjoyed watching you grow all these years and I’m thankful I’ve been able to learn from you and unlearn some of my own misgivings along with you.

    What an incredible journey, with many more years to go. Due in part to watching your progress over the past couple years (and your occasional cracks on the equestrian community lol), and doing my own research into horse psychology, I too have come to re-evaluate and criticize many of the commonplace practices in my little corner of the horse world. Some big names in the horse training world have also began to shift their methods over to attending to the emotional and mental state of the horse first, and then training second. What a massive difference listening to your horse can make, along with using gentler methods. "Behaviour problems" (aka human-caused problems) can disappear once you change yourself because it was never a horse problem to begin with. People like to think in this mindset that it's the horse that's aggressive, dominant, anxious, etc. and it's simply a personality thing that has to be managed with aggression and harsh equipment in kind. However, the horse is just reacting and developing coping mechanisms to deal with that treatment or lack thereof.
    But, old habits die hard and it's a struggle to deviate from "This horse tried to bite me and needs a smack/yank" to "Why does this horse feel the need to bite? How am I or others interacting with this horse that makes him feel this way, and what am I missing before it happens?" The answer could be many things, from a lack of good leadership to pain, fear, etc.
    My long term goal is to rehome a rescue and just have a partner to learn about and hang out with. I don't want to show, just ride in a rope halter and learn how to communicate. If you ever decide to sell rope halters, I'm totally buying one from you!

    • @Milestone-Equestrian
      @Milestone-Equestrian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Totally agree with everything you’ve said about the horse world and change. Also funny what you said about rope halters! Janae has actually just started making them and may be offering them for sale once she’s practiced making some more!

    something i dont see often, especially in social media, is acknowledging that you make mistakes when training horses, especially when you're a beginner. thank you to opening my mind to a lot of things, that are considered "normal" to some people, but are clearly not the right kind of training/enforcement.

    I've watched your videos for the last two/three years, at least, and I'm such a fan of your work ethics! Especially your awareness of how you house your horses. I don't know how it's in Canada but in Europe the concept of putting your horse in a cage is still wide spread. 24/7 outside, in a herd, that's how its supposed to be. Thank you for spreading !
    Also, it's so refreshing to see a horse person tell the whole story, with all the mistakes and how they wronged their horses. This is so important and it really pays off, for the horses, for the person and also the business. I'm glad your doing well and happy to see your success! The world needs more people like you!

    Thanks to your feeding videos I've completely changed how I feed my horses. Ever since I started riding at two my family always fed a high grain diet. I wanted to change it but most resources I found we so complex and in corporate like 7 different feeds. I now feed three things free choice hay(something we already did) soaked alfalfa cubes, and a pellet diet formulated for easy keepers and on the plus side we spend way less on feed now.
    It nice seeing how far you've come ive been working with horses for 18 years now and it seems like I'm still learning how to do things right.
    I also was quite the brave rider when I was younger. I think the younger you start the less you fear because you haven't learned to yet. At that young of an age the fact that 1100lbs animals are dangerous doesn't even cross your mind

    I can relate with you so much in everything you’ve been through, and are going through. I took a 5 year break with horses, but I’m back at it. I’m currently struggling myself with depression, and the lack of energy to go to the barn. Some days I skip because I can’t force myself to walk out the front door. I thankfully have a supportive family that helps me out on these days, but I know it’s not fair to them. I’m scheduled for a consultation next month with a doctor to figure out the why, and what needs to be done. Thank you for posting your story! I started when I was five. The lesson place kind of just threw me in a round pen and worked with other people. I guess they thought I was too young. Then we found another place to go to. They were super nice and I learned a lot but then the trainer had to go to college. It was probably a year before we found another place. We went there and were there for years. Recently, the trainer moved to Florida for her dream job, so the other trainers took on the business. I just started English and I am learning how to jump after riding Western for 8 years. I have only done one show in Western Pleasure was going to be in 1st, but then I got knocked down to 5th because of the consistency. I haven't done another show and I was planning to do one in 2020.....but COVID happened. It's really cool to hear about other peoples riding stories. I hope to major or minor in Equine Sports in college. I have ALWAYS wanted to ride an Arabian!! That's so cool that you grew up riding them! Sadly, I wont be able to have my own horse until I grow up and get a job and stuff, but my lesson horses are so sweet!

    Thank you for making this video! You are such a big inspiration and greatly changed my views on thoroughbreds. Before discovering your channel I only knew the spooky and crazy thoroughbred and was so sure I didn't like the breed without having a lot of experience riding horses.
    It all changed when 1 year ago I started taking riding lessons consistently at a barn that casually had a lot of rescued OTTBs and there I met my heart horse, a 10 y/o thoroughbred mare, she was very green and definitely not the horse for a beginner like me as she only had been used as a trail riding horse. I decided to lease her anyway and started paying it out by working at the barn every day I could and expanding my experience. I certainly did a lot wrong with her due to my inexperience but now we're finally growing as a team and improving. In the process, I worked with other OTTBs there and fell in love with the intelligence and athleticism of the breed.
    I too, like you, hope to one day become a trainer and maybe even work at a racetrack even if I don't come from a wealthy nor horsey family. So again, thank you

One major thing I have learned is training isn't cookie-cutter and what works for one horse doesn't work for another....which is sooo obviously looking back, but wasn't something I thought about at the time

    I'm going to fangirl all over your page here for a moment and just say, I've been watching your videos for a long long time now :) Seeing your new videos and photos are always my favorite to watch Archie was one of my favorites of yours (very cool to hear he made an impact on the Vancouver police force!), and George was such a wonderful boy, I genuinely cried when I heard he passed. Simon and Roulette's rehoming and retraining actually meant the world to me.. as it's a lifelong dream of mine to rescue horses on the way to the kill pen, give them skills and training to be seen as 'more desirable' and find them loving homes. My life has led me down a different road and I'm unable to do that at this time, so buying your merchandise and supporting you a province over is one of the ways I can help.
    You're an incredibly talented rider and trainer, and are using your gifts and talents for the good of horses. Grateful to see a horse professional with good morals and ethics and who treats horses the way they should be, not in stalls 24/7 and trained by means of discipline and dominance, but with natural horsemanship practices/husbandry and knowledge. If you keep going the path you're going down, you'll soon be one of Canada's legendary horse trainers and riders, and do all of us proud.
    Thank you SO much for your hard work saving and rehoming OTTB's and auction horses (when you can!), you deserve your beautiful, flashy, hard earned Oldenburg baby, your new truck and trailer, and bucket loads of praise and encouragement!! Happy to hear this awful pandemic year has been kind to you. :)
    I wish I lived in the area to take lessons by you someday, maybe clinics and lessons are something you'll do in the future. :)

    I really love how forthright you are about having made mistakes in the past. None of us are born knowing any of this stuff, and I think one of the most toxic things about the equestrian community is that people are highly critical of each other about the mistakes that they are making---which just leads to defensiveness and doesn't lend itself well to learning.
    Don't hate, educate! I appreciate how much you do that

    What a journey! Thanks for sharing it with us :) I wish I had that many footage of me riding when I was young or even if 10 years ago when I finally got my first horse!!
    Riding race horses is probably the more hardcore training I ever done. I rode trotters for a summer back when I was 18 and fit but it was still a pretty hard workout!! And I normally rode 3 a day cause the rest were on sulky. So I can only imagine what riding 16+ would be like!!!
    Finally, if I may add a little suggestion for your next video of this type. Can you please leave the writing for a little longer! I had to press pause so many times cause my reading in English is quite slow and I also wanted to hear what you were saying ;) so I couldn’t do it all at once!! that would be great!!

    Your story is so cool! I really want to start working with sales horses myself. I retrained my mare who I bought three years ago, she was being used for barrels and poles but had never been given a proper foundation, which I'm still currently building up on her. Its been the best three years, though not without some blood, sweat, and tears.

      The key to being less harsh in training is to remember if the horse is not understanding something with R-, amping up the severity of how you ask is likely to increase stress but not overly likely to elicit the correct response. So, instead, you can try asking in a different way or ask for smaller approximations towards the correct behaviour and reward those!

Interesting listening to how your trainer was with your first horse with harsh methods , I have actually stopped training with regular trainers and my friend now helps me who is much more into natural horsemanship and confidence . I like this so much more , regular trainers can be so cynical and harsh . Hoping one day to find a show jump trainer who can help me with my young horse tho . 🦄🦄

    hii i just wanted to say how much i appreciate you & your presence in the equestrian community, especially your honesty in regards to past mistakes and/or general struggles. tbh, you and jill ultimately got me back into horses + more into learning properly about them and not listening *solely* to whatever my trainers said (i later found out they were notoriously awful trainers @ that lol) anyways, specifically between your debate/debunking vids that contain credible sources and thus ofc far more understandable n reliable information, and videos like these where you share your experiences and growth esp in regards to past mistakes and/or ways of thinking, theyve helped rekindle my passion for horses, and mostly, my hope for the horse world as a whole, knowing that people like you are here & have significant influence in it. im not sure if this has made much sense as im quite sleepy rn but tl;dr Thank you so much n keep up the amazing work as u see fit!! 🥰

    I had the exact same journey as a rider not family wise, except i first rode when I was turning four, then a few years later at seven my 20 yo brothers fiancé convinced my mom to give me riding lessons (she was also an equestrian and didn’t teach me any bad things, she ended up being bad outside the horse world... cheater!) the lesson teacher got me started on the unfair things though she didn’t tell me to do them directly or do them herself but she was never careful I didn’t do anything unfair till I was 9 I started to have a mindset of “your horse has to work for you” so I started lunging my horse way to much she didn’t even know how to walk on the lunge anymore (I never hit her though) then we had to sell her when I was 10 as we were moving to grow our farm (also I never to this day have boarded a horse as I’ve always been on an acreage or farm) a few months after we moved I got my second “horse” my very first horse was a mini named popcorn but at the time he had a buddy named splash witch I always rode as he was much calmer my brother rode popcorn the stubborn headed one but still my fave lol it was weird to my mom she hated that thing it was pure trouble anyhow my second horse was a qh/welsh pony witch I still have named buttons she was a
    legend as that’s when I started to watch Clinton Anderson’s shit vids I started to hit eventually it became less hitting (the hitting was never hard) and more scaring her into doing what I wanted, luckily at the age of 12 were most equestrians think 12 yo are “stuck up” thinking their trainers, I started to get my mentality back, also my dad grew up forcing a horse to do what you want same with my mom they were never really supportive and still aren’t, I stopped hitting or scaring my horse (thank you Raleigh) I realized my horse started to come to me when I had a halter and I just became a better rider, I later bought a 7 month old mini horse for only 50$ (at this time I was experienced enough to get my first project) he was a flaxen mane chestnut who I named popcorn after my first “horse” I halter trained him and I still have him I’m still waiting for him to be old enough to buggy train! Sorry for the long comment and thank you to all good equestrians for helping me change 🥰 love y’all and pls support 12 yo to continue as those people who say on tik tok now “now that all the 12 yo trainers are here” wouldn’t have helped me back then thanks! 😊

      I am a beginner and isn't Shelby, but I recently came home from a riding lesson, and we were doing bareback. I found it easier to balance if I was sitting heavy but not with a crooked spine, slightly leaning like, back, sinking "into" the horse. Following the horse's movements. This worked for me at a walk and trot. Does this help you? =)

    • @sydneydayken5110
      @sydneydayken5110 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iclynnx I kind of do that too. I really try to allow myself to move with the horse. I think the main thing is staying loose in your thighs. I struggle mainly in the canter, my horse does little baby bucks, and I’m not sure whether it’s because I’m too tight, or because it hurts her back (I am very bony 😂).
