Michaela Jill Murphy is an American voice, film, and stage actress. She is known as the voice of Toph Beifong in the animated Nickelodeon television series "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Michaela's voice has been featured in several animated movies, including Meet the Robinsons, Over the Hedge, The Ant Bully, Finding Nemo, The Emperor's New School, and Brother Bear 2.
On paper it might sound kind of boring how there’s just an entire episode of Zuko trying to convince them to let him join, but it doesn’t come off like that. As a long time viewer, you understand their distrust towards him, and it feels satisfying him finally joining them and giving him a chance. Team avatar is finally complete.
I’m gonna be honest, I see the basic description there and I think the exact opposite. We know how much the gang hates him, it’s no wonder they’d resist at first.

And it makes sense that Toph would be most willing to give Zuko the benefit of the doubt, since she wasn't around for their worst experiences with him.
@@Jeremy_theGentshe wasn't around for any of the bad Zuko moments. In fact the only time she's around Zuko before this episode was when they teamed up to fight Azula. So from Toph's perspective Zuko is on the good side and just has the stories she's heard from Aang, Katara, and Sokka to form her opinion of Zuko.
"Hello, Zuko here" the most legendary conversation starter! Zuko is one of my favorite characters. NOTHING ever comes easy for him. Not wisdom, not power, not his honor, not inner peace...his whole story is struggle. But that makes his redemption arc the fucking sweetest, and I'm a real sucker for a good redemption arc. When Aang bows to Zuko, Aang does the Fire Nation bow that he learned from the fire nation school he attended where the fist goes under the hand, such a small detail that shows an immense amount of respect Aang shows for other nations and their customs.
Combustion bending is telekinetic firebending, so by channeling chi through the forehead it superheats the surrounding air and producing a beam of explosive energy capable of immense damage, both in short and long range. Unlike conventional firebending, which produces a flame from the body, the technique instead creates a powerful beam that explodes upon contact with a solid surface. So yeah, he exploded because he hit himself. Because of how windy the Western Air Temple was, Aang's airbending during the battle with Combustion Man was enhanced! I like the moment when Zuko says he can teach how to control firebending is the moment that Aang realizes it's a good idea because not controlling it and hurting people (like Katara) was his fear with firebending.

Combustion Man's ability doesn't really bug me. Producing fire is just a very small and very concentrated combustion. It's easy to forget that fire isn't actually a physical thing, but just a chemical reaction producing light and heat. So to be able to train that ability to have such focus and precision far away AND have it be that explosive is pretty impressive. The Yangchen novels talk about developing this skill.

He's using his Third Eye to concentrate firebending into an explosion. When Sokka's boomerang hit him, it blocked his qi and caused a backfiring explosion. This is why he has that Third Eye tattoo.
Zuko must be like " I wouldn't exactly say Toph is a person I love, I don't even once use her name."

I love the fact that zuko's search for the avatar both started and ended at the western Air temple
Easily my favorite episode of the series . Sokka and Katara now having grown so much having a reversal of their season one attitudes or Toph since she had no history with Zuko being the most open to it just so many little touches that made the episode special .

For Zuko to join now, better late than never. Also Toph stating straight facts there to the team, once again another strong voice of reason moment her.
Combustion Bending, the most precise, difficult, and deadlist of any form of firebending...unlike Lightning generation/redirection. This subset of Firebending focuses on sheer concussive force, created by immediate immolation and destruction. This sub-skill of firbending can create sudden and powerful explosions upon or within any combustable material with said Bender's sight.

"Hello, Zuko here" Zu Tzu, the Art of War. Guava?! Now we're talking! Guava is great in pastelitos (Cuban pastries) with cheese, a good shake, as well as a nice glaze for BBQ ribs! The frog hybrid in this episode is a badgerfrog! I love how Appa was so quick to trust Zuko here! Given that we know Appa can completely understand the human language, he witnessed Zuko and Iroh's entire conversation back when Zuko freed him from Lake Laogai. It wasn't just an animal being nice to the person who freed it, Appa knew Zuko had been struggling with trying to turn his life around for the better, so it stands to reason why he would be the first to believe Zuko is being genuine.
Konietzko came up with the idea for the temple's buildings to be upside down! The design of the Western Air Temple was inspired by the roofs of Bhutanese monasteries and Tibetan architecture. DiMartino visited Bhutan and did a hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) which is a very holy site as it's where Guru Padmasambhava meditated and practiced with students before departing the kingdom of Tibet in the early 9th century. Padmasambhava is credited with introducing Vajrayana Buddhism to Bhutan, which was then part of Tibet. Paro Taktsang was built in 1692, it's 10,000 feet above sea level, so imagine like someone building it on those cliffs, like, there's no roads, there's nothing. Pretty amazing!

Man, it's episodes like this that show why this series is my favorite.
All the different characters interacting with each other, the amazing writing, design, voice acting, world-building, we really miss that in more modern cinema and TV!
This episode has some of the most legendary lines and scenes (like more toph crawling) PLUS it’s where the gaang becomes complete! Toph also gets some incredible moments of wisdom. She’s just in the corner being smarter than everyone. Top ten for me

Honestly this was one of my favorite episodes of the series, just zuko trying so hard and being comedic by accident was great change in his character

I was hoping Dante was going to be a guest for this episode! 😭 At first I hated how Katara treated Zuko but the more I watch the season 2 finale, the more I understand Katara's distrust towards Zuko here. She was the first one to show some trust towards him in Ba Sing Se and soon after that, he attacks. I'd be skeptical and mad as hell too.

For my anyone that says that Katie was too intense towards Zuko at the end remember this. Katara isn’t swing Zuko growth like the rest of us (audience) has. From her perspective she trusted this person before and got betrayed and know here he comes again trying to fool her? But this time he actually wants to change, however she not falling for it. Makes complete sense!💯

I mean, she snuck up on a sleeping firebender in the middle of the night, while he was camping alone in the woods. Of course Zuko’s first response should just be like, those fire daggers he uses a lot, just so he has a defense ready. But also, he was probably still half asleep and not thinking super clearly.

For Combustion Man's power, it is combustion bending, which is a sub-type of fire-bending that very few benders can perform. The bending, from what I can figure (I've not read the comics so, I don't know about any details that are mentioned there), the bender focuses their bending through the eye tattoo on their forehead, which is the location of the light chakra. By hitting the center of the tattoo, it temporarily obstructs the chakra, like how Aang's chakra got blocked by Azula's lightning, but on a lesser scale, causing any attempt to use that bending to backfire, causing an explosion right in front of the bender, with the severity of the backfire being proportional to the strength of the hit (in the episode "The Runaway" he got hit by a stray pebble from a boulder Toph launched at him, and the backfire just knocked him back).
"Listen here, Avatar, I can join your group or I can do something unspeakably horrible to you and your friends. Your choice." 😆😆😆
Man these are some of the best episodes of the series in my opinion. Side note give a lot of credit to these writers because by the time Zuko joined team avatar he fit like a hand in a glove 🧤 💯
I don't think Combustion Man should have stood back up after getting hit by Sokka's boomerang. People underestimate the power of a boomerang; they were originally hunting weapons! The boomerang should have embedded itself in Combustion Man's head!🪃💀
I have also wondered why that guy can create explosions with his mind. And the only other person who can do that in this universe besides him is a woman in the Sequel series "the Legend of Korra." But I recently watched a video that just came out from the TH-cam channel "SuperCarlonBrothers," which is on all of the different sub-bending types in Avatar. They say each bending (Air, Earth, Water, and Fire) have multiple bending types created from the main ones (which we of course see on the show). And they say this mind exploding power is a Fire sub-bending type, which I think makes sense to a degree (fire benders can create fire, and this gut can explode stuff with his mind). But we never see this guy (or the Woman from Korra) fire bend.
They talk about all of the different sub bending types in that video. Metal bending and Lava bending derive from Earth. Healing people, Healing and Calming corrupted spirits with water, Blood bending, and Freezing water are derived from Water Bending (They have a lot). Traveling into the spirit world, Manifesting your spirit outside your body into the human world (Astral Projection), and Flying (without a glider, like Opa and Superman) are derived from Air. Finally, Conducting Lightning and Creating Explosions with your Mind are derived from Fire.
By the way, Lava bending is an earth bending ability, which makes sense because earth is molten rock, but I get how that could be a fire bending ability too. I actually think it would make sense if earth benders could only bend lava when presented to them in that molten state, but they can specifically turn earth to lava. But it is still cool. I heard there was a theory that only the Avatar could Lava bend (before the Legend of Korra came out), because (one) in the original show you see three Avatars in flashbacks do this. And (two), because Avatars can bend all four elements, so the idea is that the Avatar is using his Earth bending and Fire bending at the same time, which is a cool theory, but has now since been debunked.
It's a Badger Frog, this is mentioned in a future episode. This is one of my favourite episodes of Book 3. BTW, Combustion Man will ALWAYS be Sparky Sparky Boom man to me
The way Zuko says "Hello, Zuko here" sounds like he's about to start a podcast LOL, also I used to joke and call the little frog that Zuko was talking to "Wilson" after Tim Taylor's neighbor from "Home Improvement" because people would often come to Wilson to talk about their problems which is kind of what Zuko is doing here

I don't see any problems with Combustion Mans bending style. It's literally the same thing as any other firebender does. In fact, if anything, it could be argued that combustion is the purest form of firebending. Fire is created because of a chemical reaction between an oxidizing agent and a fuel source, causing combustion, but the actual fire is only generated if the heat is significant enough to overcome the flashpoint of the fuel/oxidizer mixture.
In essence, ALL firebenders are combustion benders, but most tend to focus on generating more heat and have limited range, causing only nearby air molecules to combust. Combustion Man focuses less on heat generation, and more on just causing the oxidization, resulting in larger combustion effects and enhancing his range significantly.
Honestly, combustion bending makes more sense as a form of firebending than even lightning-bending does (which would require creating a potential difference through which electrical current can flow and includes needing an understanding of electromagnetic forces that have nothing to do with how fire or combustion works), but nobody seems to have a problem with that.
If you want to understand the combustion bending you should listen to the Yangchen novels
Giving major Leeloo vibes in that outfit. Styling. Be sure to appreciate the luxury of having a choice with clothing. It's something that can be easily taken for granted. Firebending is fire coming out from the extremities, it doesn't seem that far off to have fire coming out of your forehead I guess. It seems like a very focused laser like fire as opposed to the open flames traditionally seen. I think it would've been cute to ship Zuko and Toph.

It's a badger-frog. and Combustion Man is a fire bender. He mastered a very hard and very rare form that allows him to pull heat out of the air around him, compressing it down, then ignite it. The rapid expansion causes an explosion. It's why they call him combustion man even though I am pretty sure combustion engines don't exist in their world yet.
Some supplemental material explained it all and said he blew his own arm and leg off when he was younger trying to control it and failing. I further hypothesis that you can't find too many people who have mastered the technique due to its extremely high self mortality rate.
Combustion bending is a sub bending to fire bending. Somehow he can focus the energy of his fire bending solely through his third eye, which produces a powerful beam. When it explodes, I see it as all of that concentrated fire bending energy spreading out in all directions.
Combustion mans power backfired because Sokka's boomerang struck him in his third eye chakra, it disrupted the chi flow. Instead of flowing out it flowed in a closed loop into pineal gland and blew his head up
not sure exactly how it works, but that guys power is known as "combustion bending" and it seems to be another form of fire bending. I would guess it involves complete focus and depth perception to pull off which is why it explodes in his face cause he couldn't see properly after being hit in the head (or more likely his third eye) Best guess for how it works is similar to a character in the anime "Full Metal Alchemist" so like he uses fire bending to make a spark in the oxygen molecules causing an explosion

I always thought of Combustion Man's power as a ripple effect. If you throw a stone in the water it creates perfect ripples, but if you throw another stone after that which has the same wave length as the first one, the ripple effect increases in size. Do this many times and eventually you create a giant wave. Combustion Man does the same thing, but instead of using stones to create water waves, he uses explosions to create air pressure. Theoretically, an air bender could do the same thing, just without the flames.

Hey Michaela, recent avatar fan! When I was a kid I used to catch some episodes of avatar on tv but I didn't think much of it back then or keep up with it when it was still new at the time, then two years ago I moved back into my childhood home and started watching the whole series on Netflix, wish I saw sooner as a kid how GREAT this series is! really glad to have watched it now and joined the club! Really excited for this live action series the cast look exactly like their animated counterparts!!
