I grew up listening to John Hiatt with my Dad... classic songwriting and a classic voice. His songs bring me nostalgia and peace in the best way possible.

First time I saw John Hiatt he was a desolate man. We're talking 1985, John touring with Loudon Wainwright. We're talking Enschede, The Netherlands. John and Loudon played to an audience of, say, a hundred students. That's what life was like for a genius songwriter from the US without too many hit records & a private life on the rocks.
But you bet John performed as he would on your average Ottawa Bluesfest '99. Survivor's spirit. Musician's flame.
Then came BTF. The rest, friends, is history.

I gave you an upvote because you respect his music. But, he couldn't write The River or Blood on the Tracks. So, let's not get too crazy here.

C’mon man. “He was wrapped up in himself like an orange peel” is ridiculous. I love this song, and John’s work, but he is lightyears away from Dylan or Springsteen when it come to songwriting.

in this way he's one of the sneaky-est of the best songwriters - it may be years later before you realize the wordplay or enuendo in a song you thought you knew. absolute master- and still finds room for humor..

Always loved anything John Hiatt did, My two songs are, "Little Head" and "Smashing a Perfectly Good Guitar". I always understood the lyrics to Little Head, but just recently I heard a snipit of "SPGG" and I could relate that song to my relationship with so much compassion, conviction, and regret. I never knew the true meaning of these lyrics in the late 80's or 90's when first hearing it, I just thought, like most people "why do they smash a perfectly good guitar on stage". Now I know why!

There are few singers and songwriters whose songs become a part of the American fabric... Woodie Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan... John Hiatt deserves the same icon status as those greats.

I love this song. The high hormonic voice of the Mandolin player is a perfect match for Mr. Hiatt. Pluc the sound is above average of most HD videos posted. Good times light a bowl and tap your feet. 8/22/2020.

So why did America neglect JH for sooooo long?
In the 1980's John Hiatt did a concert tour in The Netherlands every year, while at his US home he was sitting around doing nothing because nobody seemed to care.

"Throwin' up ashes on the floor
If this is a lesson in love
    Well what's it for?
    The heart won't remember
    The burning fire
The next time you feel the flame of desire."
Not sure any poet has said it any better.

...to get lost in each other or to go home and doze off. There was Mr. Hiatt, standing by himself in half-shadow. He was a small man on all accounts, his hands in the pockets of a small raincoat, a facial expression somewhere between wonder and acquiescence. My opportunity to exchange a few words, in embarrassing fandom. "Thank you, Mr. Hiatt. That was great. Loved it, really." What more can one say? It was true. There's no comparison between immersion in good music and ...

    A moment of steel
    A dry-eyed house
Did he say goodbye to you
Or did you kick him out
    I know you're not afraid
    To go alone
But this was a marriage of spirit, flesh, and bone
    Now whatcha gonna do
    When the planet shifts
    Whatcha gonna do
    Gonna slit your wrists
Bleed all over the milky way
The stars in your eyes look red today
    [Chorus:]
    Cry love, Cry love
    The tears of an angel
    The tears of a dove
Spilling all over, your heart from above
    Cry Love, Cry Love
The trust of a woman in his hand
But he was a little boy, not a man
You loved him stronger than he could feel
Yeah he was wrapped up in himself like an orange peel
    Now whatcha gonna do
With the booze and the blush
    Whatcha gonna do
    When there's no rush
    Cop a little misery
    At the corner store
Well' one day that train of pain won't stop no more
    [Chorus]
Throwning up ashes on the floor
If this is a lesson in love
    Well what's it for?
    The heart will remember
    The burning fire
The next time you feel the flame
    Of desire
    [Chorus 2x]
Cry love, cry love, cry love

After the show, I got a chance to talk with Mr. Hiatt. Actually, any audience member got a chance to stay around, help out the roadies, grab a beer (Grolsch) and talk with John. That's what life was like for Enschede students with an ear for good music and a penchant for John's music. At the time, John happened to be a star only in Enschede, Netherlands.
John had signed a couple of LP's (remember LP's?) and done some small talk about tonight's performance. Now it was time for most students...
