  • John Hiatt's first Late Night appearance, performing "Slow Turnin'" with the World's Most Dangerous Band, then chatting all too briefly with Dave. In glorious stereo.

I always loved his slide guitar in this song. Great lyrics, no doubt. But Sonny Landreth's slide playing is why I listen to this song. I wish it was more up front in this rendition.

And one of the best references to another musician: 'I'm yellin' at the kids in back 'cause they're bangin' like Charlie Watts!' The Stones were fabulous, but for some reason I wanted to play this song to pay my respects to Charlie - Rest in Peace and Power.

This song makes me think of Charlie Watts more than listening to the Stones does. It's the visual of the kids hitting and kicking the back of your seat like a drum set. It just makes you think and use your imagination. And when I go to think of the kids being in the back seat, I can only picture Charlie Watts in the back. One a music video where John is driving and he looks in the rear view mirror and sees the kids, but when he turns to yell at them, it's Charlie really back there pounding on his seat.

I saw John Hiatt open for Robert Cray in 1986, having no clue who he was. Very enjoyable. Then saw him open for Jackson Browne in 1994. By then I knew what a treat I was in store for. Never fails to bring good energy, great music, and lyrics that are so wise and funny. "3 bank jobs later, 4 cars hot wired and we crossed the Mississippi like an oil slick fire". Chuck Berry would be proud of that one. Rock on, John Hiatt!

I became a John Hiatt fan the night I saw this performance on "Late Night." Bought the album "Slow Turning" and soon discovered that I had missed out on nearly 10 years of his recording career. The guitar intro here is a slowed-down version of the one he used on his 1980 song "Pink Bedroom," from the album "Two Bit Monsters" (the intro was used again on the 1991 Patty Loveless hit "I'm That Kind of Girl"). Fittingly, "Pink Bedroom" was performed on "Late Night" as well in 1985, by singer Roseanne Cash (also available on Don Giller's channel).

    RIP Charlie Watts
    Addendum:
Cannot imagine being this crazy talented and THIS being my debut on Dave.
I have (or had - I'll have to check) every CD Mr. Hiatt released....just haven't listened to him in a bit...but saw him a bunch of times after this album came out, including as the headliner for the local annual Waterfront Bluesfest here in PDX.
Dude is an Indiana native?!?!? How had I forgotten that? And no one thought to bring him on before this?!?!?
Hmmmm.....who did decide who made it on the show anyway? 🤷‍♀
And it must be me because I swear in this segment , Mr. Hiatt and his incredible band are putting Paul and Co. to shame....but that, that can't be right, can it? Like the lyrics & musicality might be about sending a signal change? Trapping him behind his keyboards? Letting him know a change is coming?!?
Sheesh. I clearly need more sleep!
Oh, and this segment, the post-performance interview, could be played for every white high school kid who finds formal education difficult for any number of reasons to say, "See? There's lots of ways to be GENIUS!"
