- Minor Alterations: Christmas Through the Looking Glass - David Lovrien (Concert Band)
Looking for something really different for this year's Christmas concert? Here's a game of holiday hide-and-seek for your audience! "Minor Alterations: Christmas Through the Looking Glass" is a medley of favorite Christmas tunes, transposed from major to minor keys then disguised, layered and morphed even more. From the ominous "Deck the Halls" at the start to the final, frenzied "Nutcracker Suite" finale, each tune is lovingly twisted into something new and inventive.
Grade 5 Composition
(above recording is of Concert Band version)
Composed by David Lovrien (ASCAP)
Conducted by Jerry Junkin
Performed by the Dallas Wind Symphony
Published by Lovebird Music (2007)

I do not own anything.
I'm playing this with my band now and it honestly sounds straight of a Nightmare Before Christmas
We just started playing it today, and we said the EXACT SAME THING
@@hopeboland3116 same tho we started yesterday
Honestly from T to the end I just fake i don’t want to deal with it my band director doesn’t even notice
dang all these people have played it before me and now i get to feel the same thing with this song and a bass clarinet :)
We’re actually playing a piece called that along with this one
I never realized how creepy and sinister Christmas carols sound when they're in a minor key
That's really any song.
Dillon Ohlemiller
I’m not sure how much of this is how we hear them happy and major so much and when it gets twisted our brains think it’s spooky. But yeah you’re totally right.
I just realized that the reason I don't like christmas music is because it's all in major key, and way too sugary sweet for me
Minor key makes it 10000000x better
are we sure about that?
@@Pheonix_7930 Yup. 100%.
2:44
Every time I hear this part, I imagine the lyrics being
"We wish you a merry christmas (or not) (or not)"
I can’t unhear it
I can’t unhear that now that I heard it
This piece is SO much fun to play! Though those runs in the beginning took some time to get up to speed, lol. Shout out to my Oboe players out there!!
Hello my fellow oboe!
My band teacher just switched me from flute to oboe and we are playing this piece. Definitely been a struggle but it’s coming along nicely!
@@naddollie Aye!! Our breed is rare but awesome! I don't know how many times someone looked at my oboe and called it a clarinet. It hurts my soul.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeee oboeeeeeeeeeee
So here’s the funny my band has 15 in total days until our winter concert so he’s making us play things at tempo to get this song done
Minor keys make everything sound better 👌
Indeed
That sax solo is just magnificent!
Agreed
The composer is a saxophone player. I competed against him at Texas Music Educators Association All-State band tryouts in 1979. He got 1st chair, I got third (which was considered alternate).
@@excalibur1812 That's cool. I found myself listening to this because I'm playing this in Wind Ensemble and me being first chair I get the solo and wow it sounds amazing. I hope I can play it just as good. I'm a sophomore in highschool.
It's actually clarinet solo, we just started playing it in band today
@@hopeboland3116 It's alto sax. I'm playing it for my winter concert in Wind Ensemble. I'm talking about the solo of the second page not the first part of the piece.
This is probably the best song and arrangement for a concert band, it sounds like a real orchestra even though there's no strings!
There's a harp part actually written in it but I agree
there's actually string bass in here! i play tuba and my bd wants me to learn string and electric bass so i played the tuba and string bass parts on tuba for our concert :)
@@cosmicsuccubus6515 and string bass!
@@rachelmarrone much sad! This is a piece that has an actual string bass part, as opposed to just doubling the tubas, and its different from the tuba part .... it makes this poor string bassists heart happy (because i'm so used to bloody tuba charts 😂😂)
Minorchristmasmusic…Minorchristmasmusic…MERRYPOPPINS… Minorchristmasmusic
All these songs have a minor song associated with them like Swan Lake for the sax solo section, chimney for jingle bells, etc. In minor alterations 2, the composer pairs oh holy night with ride of the Valkyries, and joy to the world with that one Serbian song I can't remember the name of.
My favorite song I've ever played at any concert in band😍
I love how it goes from nice sweet Christmas music to sinister music in a snap
So our band director handed it out and I was joking around and said "Who wants the timpani part, I don't think I can do this" (it's really easy btw) and the percussion section just starts flipping their lids like "HOLY SHIT IF SHE CAN'T PLAY IT NOBODY CAN OH GOD"
today I made the world accidentally burn
whoopie
Intro is incredibly well written. The trumpet part sounds epic...I might use that as inspiration whenever I get to writing a piece for band.
This is what Christmas music sounds like for folks working in retail. I speak from experience after first hearing this after a working a shift at home depot around black friday.
The best part is the random Chim Chim Cheree in the middle of nowhere. XD
~:~
Literally where?
@@bigmustang1972 this comment is 3 years old bro, but it’s at 4:17, it plays the end of chim chimeree
Doing this for my marching bands field show this year!
+tylivia4 OMG THAT IS SO AMAZING :DDD I WANNA SEE THAT SO BAD
+tylivia4 isnt it kinda weird.... Christmas music.... in the middle of september?
Adrian Cantu IT'S ALWAYS CHRISTMAS BRAH THAT IS LIKE THE BEST FUCKING SHIT I HAVE EVER HEARD OF I WISH I WAS IN THAT MARCHING BAND GOD DAMMIT XDDDD
Lol well tbh, I would too :)) I guess their show has something to do with a Christmas-y feeling and omg that would sound so awesome! ITS LIKE AN ORCHESTRAL CHRISTMAS FOR MARCHING XDDDDDDD
Hanako Mitsu
I absolutely LOVE the saxophone solo at the beginning of the waltz section when it played "Here Comes Santa Claus!" Whoever was playing on that night was perfect in their execution; I've learned to match my humming to its distinctive timbre whenever I (re)listen to this. I played this as trumpet when I was a sophomore at university. The section gave me a chance to recollect my chops before the final section (I played second part)
This is amazing. I've listened to it 3 times in a row!!
Only 3?
It's not Christmas and I'm still here
Like Tim Burton does Christmas songs. Super.
Danny elfman
I competed against David Lovrien at Texas All-State tryouts in 1979. He got 1st chair on Alto sax. I got 3rd.
For Texas that is really good. I know that is a competitive state for lots of things. You would’ve gotten first in so many other states, probably over half of them.
Very Nightmare Before Christmas-esque, I love it!
They do play Here Comes Santa Clause in both this piece and the movie, in a minor key. They are very similar, so I see what you mean!
My old high school band played this at their concert and I'm mad cause it's really hard taking their music cause it's too cool to not play again much less to leave alone!! P.S. Minor Christmas music is the best!!!!!!
You should listen to Darth Vader's theme in major key, it sounds like someone's getting married to it XD
to all the flutes out there, i’m so sorry. i feel your pain 🥲
sadly I don’t play flute, but I know a lot of friends who do, and they say they all… dread it… I understand the idea of playing flute and see why it is difficult, but damn… it is… painful to look at their music… (I play trombone btw)
I loved playing the bass trombone part for this ❣️
Ahhh, damn. A player who played it 12 days ago (or so), I play this December 7th and… I’m looking forward to playing this. I play 2nd part, but I was supposed to receive 3rd part, but I hope it was amazing to perform
As someone who played Trombone in this song a few years ago, I can confirm that Trombones had a damn field day with this piece
santa clause is coming to tow-BYUUM BUM BOUM
I'm playing this for my winter band concert high school band is the best!
Playing this for band, love it with all my heart
This song is pretty amazing. And my band is going to play it!
I love some of the bassoon parts in this, it was fun to learn and play
Shostakovich 2nd Waltz is in there. So crazy. I am playing this in community band this year. Sight read if last night. This took a lot of theory knowledge to make this work.
I’m playing this in my band and the oboe nailed her solo. I had flute 1 and oh those notes where so high.
I def enjoyed playing it on piccolo back in my day :)
this would be like if tim burton wrote christmas carols.
my flute band is playing this year. I'm on piccolo ;) and I'm gonna play flute for any parts only flutes play and picc doesn't cuz I have many rests lol
This collection is wonderful. It is so creative and inspired. I just love it.
That bass bone part in the beginning 😫
I can’t relate. My band director was supposed to give me the 3rd/Bass part, but I’m playing the first/second part (only difference is splits, we just play the bottom ones), so I will never sadly get to see what it looks like
Bass bone part goes crazy
I love the pic part especially on the rouldoff song
my band is playing this for Christmas ( north point symphonic band)
So is my band
When sightreading this I did t realise it was cut time instead of common time till measure 55 and had a oh sh*t moment in my head when they wer already at measure 110 .
My community brass band is playing an all-brass arrangement of this song, it’s so weird but so fun. I love the ending where it transitions to the nutcracker after here we come a wassailling
We’re playing this for the current concert and I got put on first clarinet (help)
We got it for our window ensemble I play 2nd cornet
NTS Azazel I’m playing first clarinet part for our concert too ^^; Good luck to us both
Smiling Kitty1011 funny that you reply now, we actually just finished our concert and it went pretty well! I wish you good luck!
Lol watching my clarinet friends struggle for this piece was great 😂
Ahh, the solo. I'm sure you did awesome!! We just got the music today, and our first clarinet was perfection
My middle school band is playing this....... my band director will probably drop the piece though
did he
did he
did he
Did he
DID HE
My band class played that last month and my mom and my brother said it sounded like it's from Nightmare before Christmas!
To everyone listen to this on Christmas Day, I hope you guys have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!
My band is playing this for our Christmas collage concert.
Keegan your collage concert! wow it sounds great! I love collages! you can put so many pictures all together at once! lmao learn how to spell college if you're in college
Carson Cloud lmao maybe you should look at other definitions of collage or maybe ask me what I meant before you look like a dumbass.
A collage, while also being a piece of art made of various things, it can also be a collection of things, such a the band, orchestra, and choir coming together for one concert instead of 3 different ones.
Keegan LOL I really don't think so
Love a good clap at the ending
Just heard this on WRTI. Great stuff! The only way to make these saccharine pieces we've all heard a million times tolerable!
My band had played this a bunch of times and we're playing it again this year!
5:19 and 5:28 best moments for French horn
Noel Still You mean best part for the band? ;)
Yeah i agree with Evan that i'd say is probably is one of the best parts of the performance
Would anyone happen to know a full song-by-song or track-by-track list of what songs are featured in this piece from beginning to end? I wish that the score/info about the piece had some sort of breakdown, but it doesn't.
2:30 English horn solo
I had listened to this piece before, and when I was told my school was doing it for a concert, I was extremely happy. I play alto sax, so I'm not excited for the little solo:/
Sword art online Fan it's super easy 🙂 I'm playing it this year for my christmas concert and I got to play it because they wanted to challenge me as a freshman
played with my high school band, would recommend to anyone it is truly amazing- especially in person
played this at a school Christmas concert, best concert by far
Love it!! I appreciate it even more because i'm playing it!
@panther Owl, I agree!
2:03 sounds like Sally's Song. Love this.
I've always thought that too!
There are a lot of quotes. Sally's Song is one of them, also Shostakovich's Waltz No.2, the Looney Tunes theme song, If I Were a Rich Man and several others. I love this piece to no end.
I always wished ballet studios would do a little preshow before the nutcracker with droselmeyer’s toys and the mice just scheming and partying to this while everyone’s asleep
Just performed this at our Xmas concert. Loved it.
I LOVE this! What I would give to play it!
David Loverien is a genius
I got bells xylo and marimba on this song for the Christmas concert
Playing this this year. My part is so much fun (I play Bassoon)
Playing alto part on this one! Absolutely love this piece
1:33 to 1:44 sounds Soviet as hell so does 3:30 and 4:24 and 5:27
Loved playing this at our Winter Concert last year
A Russian Christmas
Bass Trombone part goes Crazy!!
Playing this for Christmas concert next week :3 🎺
This shit was banging blud 💯🔥🔥
I like the sleigh ride
3:41 has got to be My fav part ❤
I just want to point out that basically no one is complimenting that sweet glissando.
Why Would people dislike
I’m playing this in concert band and we all think it sounds like klesmyr (sp?) music. So far we have Rudolph the Jewish raindeer
we wish you a merry christmas sounds like chim chim cheree from mary poppins
Joseph Stalin's coming to town.
Which one is the Tchaikovsky at the end I cant remember the symphony #
Just preformed this tonight faster than it is right here
Aaron Cannon I’m Ready to do it again. Dougs last epic Christmas concert.
Dat tuba tho
I get to play that part :)
Me too

2. Up on the housetop, reindeer prowl
3. Krampus is coming to town
4. Grouchy old St. Nicholas + Sally's song from Nightmare Before Christmas
5. Here lies Santa Claus + Shostakovich Waltz #2 from Jazz Suite

7. For whom the silver bell tolls + Chim chim cheree from Mary Poppins
8. Fleeing through the snow + Chim chim cheree from Mary Poppins

10.5 Echo carol, the lost verse: Do you smell what I smell?

12. Kalashnikov dance by Tchaikovsky's evil twin + Hit the deck, reprise
I've been doing this to church hymns for years.
What is the part that starts at 5:16 ? It turns into "tidings of comfort and joy" but I cant place the song ?? It sounds super familiar too
Try ‘here we come a caroling’ sounds like it
That part is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
@@Anedelgardstan THANK YOU SO MUCH OMFG
Did anyone notice a little Sally’s song melody
This is 2020 christmas
Is that a violin or sax solo?? It sounds so much like a violin
Kayjaay Robinson sounds like a Sax.
It's a sax
How'd you get violin?
.25 playback speed, goodnight
I had Trumpet 3 for this last year it was SOOOOOO BORING
