Lea Salonga in the 10th anniversary concert perfected the technique so she could emote the words effortlessly. That's why it's one of the most iconic vocal performances of all time.
@@karensantos5421 lea is the best she control her belt smoothly but that vocal coach switch videos she not watch till the end which mean she find another videos to say something else. she said that lea gonna win this.
Only thing I don’t like is she doesn’t always belt big notes. Just lacks power to me and anticlimactic. There’s many singers with just as good technique out there who can also sustain these big final notes in a belt and not just mixed like Lea
Lea Salonga did not only give us a glimpse of the better technique.for singing this song, she TOLD us the STORY of this song even without the need to read the novel. She is definitely a storyteller of songs.
Lea Salonga is beyond this... this is ridiculous... why is she even on this list? She is at a different, much higher level with all her credentials - a legend! She's in a league of her own!!
I don't understand. You want the best performance left off the list of best performances? The videocast isn't called 'Who sings "On My Own" Climax Second Best'. BTW I have a soft spot for Frances Ruffelle, as well, as she was in a production I saw years ago.
@@CrYou575 To be honest, though, it really could be titled that since anyone with a serious interest in musical theatre knows which performance is best and the real discussion would be around other positions.
When I want to feel "wowed", I watch Lea Salonga's 10th-anniversary performance. It's absolutely incredible. The clarity of each syllable is beyond impressive!! ♥
Cameron Macintosh and the producers chose Lea Salonga to sing at the anniversary for a great reason: she's the perfect fit for her singing. My opinion doesn't matter, it's Cameron's decision that said it all.
She’s amazing and great, but one reason she was chosen is because they picked actors from different Les Mis productions for the 10th. Colm Wilkinson, Michael Ball, and Alun Armstrong are all from the original London cast so they had to pick someone else for Eponine
@@vitaminck1I just learned yesterday that Frances’s youngest child was born in 1995. She could have been pregnant or just given birth when the concert happened
Lea Salonga is a legend and for me, no one can beat her in the broadway performance. She sings crystal clear and she can adapt all accents because she's not just an intelligent singer but a genius.
Lea Salonga: emotions-wise, powerful yet no belting needed, right breathing and pronounciation, great stability and control...and yes oh so crystal clear!
Idk but I cant look at the other singers the same way after Lea Salonga sang this song. Lol Samantha was also good but Lea Salonga is def the clear winner
Lea Solanga is my absolute favorite! There is no one who can touch her clarity and pure ness of voice. The effortless seams of her transitions make her a true character. She never oversells a single note, and not knowing when to hold back is the other singers’ obvious weakness, especially Lea Michele. She is the closest second in that purity of sound, but she cancels it out every time she belts! Lea Solanga’s resonance is so naturally controlled it sounds as if she never needed training at all, though we know she worked hard for her gift, but just the thought that she could wake up any day and do this is why she is the best, in my honest and dedicated opinion! From this list- #1 Lea Solanga #2 Samantha Barks #3 Lea Michele Since you didn’t specify “who sang it best” in English, I would like to say that Kaho Shimada’s Japanese performance of “On My Own” is absolutely out of this world. Her voice has that oh-so-rare natural purity, like Solanga’s, but still unique to her, and her character portrayal of Eponine is flawless. Really worth listening to her version!!!
She’s aimed for the Eponine that is happy to live her fantasies but also reluctantly and sadly acknowledges the fact that her fantasies are just that: fantasies. In a sense, it’s very soft and more internal than the others who are going for more of a desperate, wailing-in-despair tone, which, if you’re talking about Eponine’s whole deal in this song, Lea’s character analysis fits more than the others.
Definitely Lea Salonga hands down! She has set the bar high after she sang this song, even made the character Eponine become a coveted role after her performance.
On Lea... she used a mixed voice in the les mis 10th anniv show because she was reserving her voice. She was performing 7-8x/ week then... She was able to belt the same line in her concert because t'was just a 2 night show (?). --- Methinks.
Hands down, Lea Salonga, the original Miss Saigon and singing voice for Princess Jasmine. She has introduced musicals and "broadway" to filipinos. She's been one of my favorite singer since her KLIM commercial as an 8-year-old.
I love Samantha's version from the film, I think It's because it is more acting, so I feel so much emotion, there she is like a little girl and I just want to comfort her. But I must admit that thanks to that version, I've found Lea Salonga's incredibly version.
Lea Salonga 1995 is my fave. She not only sounds amazing but you get caught up with her acting of the song. (I love the climax and the moments right after that going into, "I love him.") I don't know exactly when the later Lea Salonga version is from but it's at least 20 years later. She still sounds amazing. And this may also color my opinion, but I'm not a huge fan of the melody change on "pretending" - I much prefer the original version.
In the first one Lea Salonga preferred to do mix as she was singing this 5x a week she need to save voice for other day show. Unlike on the second one thats why she go on full belt on the second one.
They all can sing. So, I closed my eyes and without looking at the singer meaning simply by listening to them, I would say 1. Lea S. (younger version) - I felt the pain, emotion and her loneliness. I like her younger version than her latest version though. 2. Samantha B. (Movie version) - I definitely felt her emotion and sadness. I felt more like teen love. So close to younger version of Lea S. There was more vulnerability on her voice which is really good for me. 3. Lea M. - I felt her emotions but the pain was kinda missing for me. It sounded like she's kinda calling to someone very far from her but it's good version though.
There will never be any other person who can sing musical theater as phenomenal as Lea Salonga. Her vocals give me goosebumps every time. I saw her in Miss Saigon in 1992 and I was 12 years old and have loved her ever since. ❤️
The 10th Year Les Mis Anniv vocal performance, for me, sets the standard for this song. Enunciation, dynamics, emotional connection and interpretation, technique, everything in one vocal performance!
Leah Salonga is perfectionist in Clear singing specially in diction and she's a Legend in our country asa performing artist in theaters, movies and a Class +++ A artist. Proud to say Filipinos were a good musical talents with good vocals in any parts of the Philippines and Globally 😍😘
I love Musicals, though I can't sing to safe my life. Don't know any singing techniques or lingo, so all that talk of High Notes, Resonance or Vibrato is great for aspiring singers, but a little out of my league. So for me the winner is Lea Solanga, the others, to my untrained ears, were just... very, very loud.
I've always loved Lea Salonga's version, but when I heard Samantha Barks' stage version I was blown away. I like them both, though I wish the version where Samantha sang "pretending" higher made it into the film.
ohmygod.I actually saw that performance of Lea Salonga(short hair, red gown) live! She was jetlagging that night but was really superb the entire show!

I do like Lea Michele I must say. But in all honesty, it always annoyed me the way she says Happiness (7:41), she'd go " a world that's full of happiNISS that I have never knoooooown" Ugghhhh, my lady, it's happiNESS, HAPPINESS, i repeat!! Not happiNISS. That being said, LEA SALONGA is and always will be my queen. Forever and ever.
Urgghhh... Sorry that's how happiness should be pronounced in strong or stressed form. Have you studied about IPA pronunciation? It's happiNISS NOT happiNESS. Usually you hear it like NESS but it's actually illusional due to the nature of the sound in unstressed form. That's how NISS sounds in unstressed form, it sounds like NESS but it's actually not.
Scrolling through the comments I thought I was gonna be the only vote for Frances! To me she embodies the character the best.
