“Where did it go?” Is where it hit me hardest as a fan of The Cure since 1985.
Robert and co. got me through high school. Songs like Push, Cold, Siamese Twins, Charlottes Sometimes, Just Like Heaven, A Thousand Hours and Plainsong mean a hell of a lot.
I feel like this is his swan song.

The feeling of emptiness and utter powerless despair when facing not only the loss of a loved one, but the contemplation of our own end, our own slow walk towards death… This is what this song gets us to feel and think about. What we have lost and can never get back. RS is putting words on our old days… He will be with me until my dying breath, long after he's gone.

These songs were all written in 2019 during that awful forbidden COVID year Robert loss his Father to (Cancer) in 2019, his Brother Richard (to COVID) 2019 {I CAN NEVER SAY GOODBYE} which is on this album is about his death in November 2019, and his mother to Cancer also in 2019. IT CAN NEVER BE THE SAME is on this album as well it is a remembrance for his Mother and David Bowie who he was close friends with. Sad years for him and THE CURE as in 2022 Roger O'Donnell was diagnosed with Blood Cancer but, in 2024 he stated he's cancer free and he is doing good now. Robert in August wanted it to be known and that is how we are all getting a new album in November 1, 2024. It is imperative to pre-order the LP, CD, or Cassette. THE CURE has over a billion fans. I already ordered mine.

Robert Smith has claimed that this album will be the bleakest, saddest most brutally gloomy thing they have done. Given their benchmark with Pornography, Bloodflowers and disintegration - we can expect to be awestruck by the sheer melancholy. Its great to hear them return to the layered 'Disintegration' sound too, as the last 2 albums really didn't connect with me at all.

A genius songwriter, musician and in fact band who are able to take you to such a dark and foreboding place, yet have you smiling at their brilliance, and somehow filling you with joy at the same time. No words can describe how awesome this track is, having now listened to it a dozen times it has clawed its way through my skin and weaved itself into my soul. And yes I cried and am not ashamed. I lost my dad in April aged 94 years of age, and the title of the track hits home like a sledgehammer but I salute each of the band and everyone involved in the production of this track for its stunning beauty. He only lives about 10 miles from me and one day, if I ever bump into him, I feel that I should kneel at his feet in reverence to his mastery of his art. But seriously, the man is a genius.

I'm 48 and started to listen to The Cure when I was 16. Their music was and still is a companion through all the highs and the lows in my life. Like a really good friend that is always there for you, no matter what. This song hit me so deeply and hard from the first second I listened to it. I lost my father very suddenly when I was 21, and this song pretty accurately describes my feelings back then, and also now. I guess I want to have this song played at my own funeral someday. Pornography, Disintegration, and Wish are my favorite albums, and - if you really force me to choose - Plainsong would be it. Saw them live many times, but the "Trilogy" concert in Berlin will always stand out. th-cam.com/video/xbpM2pXx4d0/w-d-xo.html

As other commenters said, I feel this is their farewell as well as speaks to all of us getting older together (i'm 50). Losing loved ones to Alzheimer's - Words falling out of our minds. Losing loved ones along the way - raise a glass.. We end up Alone in the end, most of our biggest fears. Fire burns out, don't want it to end, look up at the stars and they are dim due to the tears of not wanting it to be over. Agree. Masterpiece.

I've been a huge Cure fan since the mid-80's when I was a tween. Their album Disintegration absolutely changed my life. I remember the first time I heard it... I locked myself in my room, turned off all the lights, and laid in bed with a speaker on either side of my head (back then, some boomboxes had detachable speakers) and it felt like my soul started floating in space, and I cried from sheer happiness and despair at the same time. They're the reason I became a musician, and specifically a bassist. And tho I'm a much bigger fan of their stuff pre-1994, I still appreciate the living hell out of them. Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, and every member to have ever graced that band, are absolute legends and I'm so grateful to have been al!ve at the same time as them.

Great review. Love the song too. Hit hard as Smith does. Interesting you mentioned the wish/disintegration vibe in your fragile review; I felt that was even more immediately true with alone. As an old head I agree that when one of your top 5 bands from back in the day comes out that truly doesn’t suck or seem just rehashed (too many to name), it’s a blessing. I hope they will tour near Winnipeg (maybe Minni or Toronto is more realistic). You should check out The The’s new album too--no slouch-ensoulment; classic Johnson with a little more Leonard Cohen as he ages. Happy place with these two bands both releasing new albums when I thought they were done. Seeing The The in Montreal Oct 21…. Fave Cure songs: Lullaby, A Forest & Watching Me Fall. Fave Cure album: disintegration… Can’t wait for this full album to drop! Merci!

There's a reason I've seen The Cure 21 times. They just get better and better. Hearing this song (and the new album) and seeing the band in the intimate venue of The Troxy in London was very special indeed

Isn’t it amazing how it is bringing so much of us to tears … feeling kind of sad, deeply touched, bursting of those memories from our youth… this is the sound of my youth … and he still has that voice … I told my best friend that it is haunting, as if I can see and feel those days one more time intensively and to say good bye and let them go 🩶🖤

When I first heard this song it hit in so many ways. The changes we go through, the losses we suffer as we get older and those around us start to dwindle and disappear. Robert is a true artist and pours his very soul into each word and each second of his music. ❤
My favorite Cure song? Each one has a special place and it’s impossible for me to choose one because then I think another one, then another one. I call it the Robert Smith effect 😊
I’m 55 and discovered the Cure early in my college days. They’ve been a staple in my life since.

I started listening to the Cure 1988 approximately. Got obsessed to the point to even started collecting bootlegs. Used to have t shirts, posters and, in my early twenties, I tried to comb my hair as Robert does. Eventually I moved to other artists, other generes and afterwards, I got really tired of the music of The Cure. I have the new record stored without opening since early December and I finally played today. Now I'm in tears, wow, the feelings I had when I discovered the band more than 35 years ago are back.

How delightful to see an emotional reaction like that in a reviewer. I play the cure in my life drawing lessons that I tutor- but a few of the older folk tease me about my love of ‘ the minor key” and the depressing music I play in the background. 😂

I cried the first time I heard this studio version. It is much more beautiful than the live version, which I also loved, but this one really moves me, as we are all thinking this is the last album. 😢 What a wonderful gift from RS to all of us, lifelong Cure fans. 🖤

I have been waiting over 30 years for them to make a master piece as Disintegration with not a bad song on the entire album with that big melancholic sound. I think it is in that atmosphere they truly belong with huge synth sounds and great melodies. If they can match that with this new album they can take pension and retire with glory.

Few bands are so sonically perfect as The Cure. And Roberts voice still sounds the same as the first time i heard it back in 1987. No question 1 of the absolute greatest bands of all time.

I’ve been listening to this song all morning and I’m ready to open up my veins to welcome sweet, sweet death. It’s a masterpiece. I’m ok. I pulled myself out of it by listening to The Head on the Door album over and over. But yeah, I love this song and it’s pure Cure. It’s amazing. I’ve been a fan for 40 years.

I remember making the same sounds like you did when the lyrics hit. Just overwhelmed. I had to pause a few times, just in the first verse to process what I was experiencing. The Cure is just phenomenal. Their music is timeless.
I just turned 50 and my two daughters who are 14 and 18 LOVE The Cure just as much as I do. We analyzed the instrumental part just like you have, paying attention to the layers and the blending of synth and the guitar. We love how melodramatic it is and how it’s building up to the point when the voice hits. My younger daughter is a budding percussionist and my older daughter plays the bass. The waiting was worth it. Can’t wait to hear the new album on Nov 1st.

Great video, you explained yout thoughts really well. This is such an emotional first track, and as is normally the case for the cure's track 1's, seems to establish the tone and atmosphere so adeptly. I think a couple of lines were a reference to previous cure songs which really creates a sense of finality. "The fire burned out to ash" may be a reference to bloodflowers' 39, whilst the "birds falling out of our skies" may be a reference to where the birds always sing, also from bloodflowers. This is perhaps significant as bloodflowers was the previous iteration of the Cure's famous "last albums ever". It really feels like this may finally be the ONE though, and from the sounds of it, it's shaping up to be one hell of a swansong.

The story behind the sculpture that will figure on the album is amazing.... Robert Smith had in his library a book about a slovenian scupltor and finally found time to check on it... He saw that face in the rock sculpture and was like "tha's the one!... it has to be the artwork".
He immediately check on internet to find the creator to ask about the rights but find out this guy died the same day he was trying to make contact. he finally asked to his widow who allowed him to use it for the artwork cover and... offered him the original statue.
