The Cure: TOP 5 HIDDEN GEMS From Robert Smith and Co | Pop Fix | Professor of Rock

  • The Cure is one of the greatest bands in the history of music. They are exquisitely unique and frankly unrepeatable. Though Robert Smith and company have influenced scores of bands that have followed they have created music that is so intensely magical and so deliciously soul invigorating it’s almost impossible to try and define it I’m sure that my story with this band is no different than your own. They were one of the musical institutions that saved me in the youthful coming of age period of deep confusion and overpowering despair that is high school. Robert Smith is one of the most gifted poets and singers of any era going back centuries. I will spend many more hours in the future, celebrating their deep and expansive collection of songs and albums but today I focus on 5 hidden Gems, from some of their greatest albums like Disintegration, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, and The Head on the Door, also non singles, album tracks, b sides, the Cure has so many that are better than their hits and I want to cover 5 today that you should either discover or re visit as they are life changing and massively essential. Let’s get into it.

Not just spiritual but the unique and worldly soundscapes his songs have had. Robert doesn't get enough appreciation for the latter whether it's the oriental Kyoto, Latin flavor of The Blood and Last Dance and the mideastern vibe of Drowning Man.

Best lyricist but also best songwriter completely. Let's not forget that he writes most of the music, plays lead guitar on most, plays bass (even plays 6-string bass as a guitar sometimes), keyboards. He is the singular greatest and most important musician of modern music (ie music once lyrics were added).
No one, no team of people, compate to him.
He's like the Highlander. There can be only one lol.

Being a huge Cure fan, I ran out and bought the album 'Disintegration' the day it came out. I put the record on the turntable and the opening notes of "Plainsong" blasted out of my speakers and forever changed my perception of how beautiful music could be. Harold and Joe and the Mixed Up A Forest remix are honestly my two favorite Cure songs. To round out a top 5 I would also say Burn, Disintegration, and Push. My gawd Push is such an explosion of goth joy. Anyway, I was thrilled when you not only mentioned both of my favorite songs but put Harold and Joe in the list. It is unlike any other Cure song, yet unmistakably a Cure song, just like you mentioned. The A Forest remix sounds like it's haunted, like every time you play it a purple ghost will come out of your speakers and scare you.

Plainsong still gets me. We saw them in 1989 for the Prayer tour at Shoreline. They opened with Plainsong and I still get shivers thinking about how that made me feel to hear the windchimes and the opening chords. Interestingly enough, they also played The Perfect Girl at that show.

My dad introduced me to The Cure back when I was 12 or 13. I wasn't really popular in school and had to endure quite some bullying due to a tic disorder I have (and to be frank, also due to the fact that I was just a really strange child). Stuff also wasn't really going well at home and then puberty hit me and I think we can all agree that puberty was a horrid time. What The Cure, especially Robert Smith, made me realize is that it's ok to be a bit strange. I still go to school with the same people who bullied me, but now I walk with my head held high. The Cure spoke and still speak to me with their music and their lyrics, they accompanied me for years and they will forever have a very special place in my heart. I think they were a big part of me finding my personality (as well as my style) without trying to change who I am.
I have found one of my dearest friends through The Cure's online fandom and we have talked almost every day for the past 2 years. I'm almost 18 now and will see my favorite band of all time live very soon. And I am so excited, you can't imagine.

-Sugar Girl (Just like heaven b-side, though only on the 12')
-The Exploding boy (was for long my nickname online. Is of course on Standing on the beach singles compilation),

    • @RodCornholio
      @RodCornholio 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thomshrike I don't know all the dynamics of how songs were promoted on the 80's but I imagine, say, a "label" the band was signed to, would chose certain songs to be sent to radio stations - maybe with the band's input. Whoever that person/s was determined practically everything.
( I'm pretty sure the band itself would determine what goes on a "B-Side").
The bottom line is this: people in the 80's - even Smith himself - could not realize the utter GENIUS of these songs. They probably chose whatever they felt had the most pop potential and let the winds of fate play out.
It's only in retrospect that folks, who were not already Cure fans, truly understand that MANY of their songs could have been chart toppers. Of course, my 1980s dream would have been the existence of a radio station which played nothing but Cure songs, thus a constant supply of brilliant music to my ears.

Its so intense of a track that we need that resolution at the end where he stops and its just Roger holding that chord (i believe it shifts from minor to major at that chord) like we needed the sun to rise at the end of Night on Bald Mountain in Fantasia!

@@jetjaguar72 It’s both daunting and exciting! I’ve listened to Disintegration, Three Imaginary Boys and Seventeen Seconds so far.
From what I’ve seen online, everything between Faith and Wish is all meant to be excellent so I can’t wait to get to it all.
I’m limiting myself to an album a week right now just in general so I don’t get burned out, plus I don’t want to rush through them as well as everything else I’m finding but it’s like another world.

My personal list of life changing Cure songs:
    1. Bare - Every single word is pure poetry.
    2. Charlotte Sometimes (from Paris) - The song is only enhanced when you learn it's based on (and uses lyrics from) an incredible book of the same name. Read the book!
    3. From The Edge of The Deep Green Sea - Heart wrenching vocals.
    4. The Kiss - This one for the instrumentation. It kicks you in the gut, particularly if your prior experience with the Cure is just the slower more lyrically mature songs.
    5. Untitled - I love that this song doesn't have a title. It's such a tight package of music and lyrics and yet they couldn't settle on a name, really powerful song.
    Bonus:
These songs have a great story to tell:
    1. There Is No If...
    2. A Letter To Elise
    3. Strange Attraction
    4. Open
    5. Just Like Heaven - I know it's poppy but the ending lyrics where he realizes it's all been a dream are so heart wrenching.

Billy Corgan was in a Seventeen Seconds clone band called The Marked in 1985... all the songs they recorded sounded like they were copying Seventeen Seconds style and sound. Which makes sense, because Seventeen Seconds came out 5 years prior and Corgan was a Cure fan. While Smashing Pumpkins has a lot of great material, they are nowhere near The Cure level status.

It's so hard to pick the cure songs. They're all so good. I also love for example songs like "a chain of flowers", "2late" and "halo". Now being almost 32 years old, I'm kinda sad, that I couldn't experienced their career earlier. They release albums so rarely these days, and the latest stuff is still good, but not as good as the pre millennial stuff. The cure is one of three bands, that could get me easily crying. Not because of the sadness in their songs. It's rather a musical understanding. When you tell your friend about a problem, you get generic answers and a nod. When you listen to the cure, you don't even have to tell them what's bothering you. It doesn't matter. The sound of the instruments, the lyrics and Robert's voice listens to your heart and not to your words and give you an understanding on that level. That is the cure for me.
