The SAAB 9-5 was designed to cruise in comfort at 120 mph on the Autobahn. It's not a true sports car although the 2002 9-5 Aero could keep up with most sports cars of the same year 0-60 mph. It's built for comfort cruising at 120 mph, and in that task SAAB engineers did an amazing job. Cheers.

@@williamegler8771 I have been working at Saab TDC for over 20 years. GM/ Opel had very little if anything to do with the Saab 95. Apart from that we had a Opel engineer at Saab TDC that was responsible for the cost reduction of all of our products. That guy wasn't the most popular guy.

@@bengtmowitz5012 That is correct!! SAAB just borrowed a Vectra. Stripped it completely to the bone and basically build a new real SAAB arround it with their own designed parts with their own heratige, design philophosy and made it a proper made (well designed) in Sweden product. I can tell you GM / Opel / Vauxhall men observing the whole proces weren't that very pleased about that (and the costs). In the first place GM thought is would be just cosmetic changes. Not a whole new car. Especially when they did it twice on the next model as well. Sadly this was also the downfall of disbanding from GM.

@@viowave So true! We were rather unobidient, but it was with the aim to be better. Most of the competition back then was satisfied with fulfilling the basic requirements as crash performance etc. At Saab we fulfilled those requirements, but we also had a number of internal requirements which always surpassed the basic requirements with 10 - 25% or more. That was the real money gussler.

    -Built very well
-Very safe and robust in case of a crash
-Solid engine that goes on forever
-Extremely nice interior with great, simple gadgets
    -Quick despite it's weight
    -Basically a landbourne jet fighter
Literally the best car on the second hand market. Cost's peanuts. Only issues are running costs like tax.

There is only around an actual 60-70kg compared to the saloon if you look it up on WIS. The Saloon could be specced up to nearly 1.7 tonne as well. My 04 Aero Estate is around the 1.6 Tonne area and is pretty much basic spec for an Aero. The heavy cars will be the V6 with all trimmings. AS3 audio, slide out rear shelf etc. We take ours to the lake district camping and you can fill the boot with enough stuff for a big family with 5 people in the passenger compartment relaxing. These cars need to be run on 98/99 octane. The ECU is very advanced for its time (Saab's own in house design) and can change performance depending on fuel. You certainly notice the difference.

      @BleeCarswell  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Ah that sounds more realistic, I was going off what it says on Parker’s! I’m looking forward to taking it camping, I’m planning on trying to sleep in the back of the car haha. I’ve read things about the Ecu adjusting automatically so will give it a go 👍

You've got a cracking example there. I'm from not too far down the road but now live in Australia. I have a late 2001-built MY00 Aero SportCombi with manual trans, it's such a good car!
I don't trust used B235's after a few bad experiences of poorly maintained motors, and this one was too good to risk - I did a full rebuild with forged pistons, huge suspension overhaul, subframe and other bushes, mounts etc - it just needs a few performance bits and a tune to make it really fly! It has 142,000km or just under 90,000 miles - how lucky was I? I only know of a couple of manual Aero wagons (estates) over here.
I should however say that the work I did was about 10x what I paid for the car.. and that was doing it myself!
You are blessed in the UK with lots of cars + spares, lots of performance part suppliers, and lots of other Saabisti building cars. Enjoy!

My 2002 SAAB 9-5 had similar sounding problems with suspension knocking and xenon light leveling problems. The suspension noise was fixed with polyurethane bushings on the rearward mounts of the front subframe and new lower control arm bushings. I used Powerflex purple (street) bushings. The headlight level system needed new gravity sensor links in front and rear suspension.

My last 9-5 (I've had 3) cost me £1600, it was ex police and had full service all new tyres and brakes. It had 70,000 miles. I thought I would just drive it, spending as little as possible to keep it going. Well, it turns out it had been tuned by special vehicle ops by the police and was absolute monster. I kept it for nearly four years and did 55,000 miles, loved it. Even drove it to Spain from Uk. Nothing went wrong, only had the usual service costs. Auto leveling on the lights is likely the level sensor, a tech2 can show which one, and you can try to calibrate it, which might resolve the issue.
For the knocking check the front subframe bushes, and also the anti-roll-bar links. The ARB links are fairly easy to do, and the Meyle HD ones are great, and pretty cheap.

Mine does 17mpg.. ( the same but automatic version ), but I think of the luxury when that happens, ha ha....seriously, it will overtake a 911 ( faster from 40-70 mph)

These are great cars and yours is a fine example. Saab's are great buys. well made, SAFE and very affordable luxury. A plus point is they're usually owned by conservative people that drive them normally, look after them and have them repaired when needed. My '01 9-5 estate was typical of this only having 150k (93 000 miles) service history and had a very easy life. Sure, it helps if you're handy with a spanner mainly due to age wear but parts aren't all that expensive. I'm in Australia (where Saab's aren't even considered by buyers) and I paid $1000 for mine (probably 500 quid). That's impossible vale for money. Go Saab!

What exactly is the point of reaching a top speed of 150+ mph? In the vid, you are driving on A- or B- roads any car with 100 hp could handle equally and on a British motorway, anything above 100 mph is likely not to last very long without a serious threat to the driver's licence.
Even in Germany, it doesn't really matter. There is no general blanket speed limit - but lots of local ones, traffic jams and mile-long roadworks with contraflows and 80 or even 60 kph limits.
You actually have to go on a long road trip outside centres of population to really put the foot down for some miles. I an German and I've got a 9-5 (albeit just with 185 hp and an automatic) - I tried 130 or 135 mph once for a short bit and thought "fine she's still up to it" but never did it again.
I read that the 9-5 brakes aren't really that good for frequent high speed use - probably because the car's main markets are the US, the UK and Sweden itself. So if you are thinking of a leadfoot trip to Germany with a 200+ k mile Saab 9-5, think again.
Mid rev pull and acceleration are a lot more important - and the Aeros are just fine there...

Complaining on a 1.7t Estate car and I'm sitting here with Mazda 6 MPS , sedan which weighs 1565kg and she has almost no insulation. After the insulation (underbody), doors, trunk, everything...with alubutyl she has gained 15-20kg and she's less confortable than the Saab 9.5 Aero. Lucky me I got the car with the US map (274hp), but the normal one has 256hp and the same fuel consumption as the Saab 9-5 2.3 Aero even though she has Direct Injection.
I'm trying to convice my wife to get a 9-5 Aero 2.3 as a family car, no luck...still.

You can get an Omega MV6 with the 3.0 or 3.2 V6 for the same sort of money, and manual versions will break 150 mph. The SAAB is probably more reliable and better built though, if you buy one with a good service history. Don't ever buy a SAAB without a good service history as ones lacking history are little, if any, cheaper than ones with all the paperwork and one that hasn't had caring owners will cost you a lot of money sorting it out, far more than the difference between that vehicle and one with a cast iron history. Really, SAABs without history should be considered as parts cars only. Don't be put off by big miles on cars with plenty of history as, while they may not be as good as pre-GM "classic" SAABs, they are still perfectly capable of racking up well over 300,000 miles without major issues, and there are plenty around that are long past 500,000 miles...

I love the 9-5. Had mine for years.
It’s now modified to c 500BHP, but interestingly, the front AP Racing discs and pads cost the same as your whole car here!
Your Bi-xenon is a sensor arm on the axle, may have come loose, otherwise swap out for another 2nd hand one.
If you want more poke for not much money, try an ECU remap from someone like Karl from Noobtune, who can free up more torque for small cash outlay, make it feel much more alive.
Enjoy, and thanks for sharing your videos.

Saabs continued to be over engineered until GM killed off the company with its inbuilt obsolescence mentality. This means that if you find a good one, both the exterior and interior will be in much better condition than other makes of the same age. I bought mine for £850 and inside and out iit looks almost like new!
