I´m swedish so I can understand what is said on the police radio. And I know the roads that is shown in this vid. We have a son living very close to where it all ended, so I drive there frequently. The chase with patrol cars was aborted long before the biker hit the roadblock and died. The chase was led from a police helicopter. The first patrol car arrived almost one minute after the crash, so they were a couple of kilometers behind. The biker stressed himself - he had no drivers licence for the bike ... Sometimes the road is blocked right at the entrance to Södra Länken, which is a system of road tunnels, due to heavy traffic/congestions/accidents in the tunnel. If so, the orange lights that is seen right before the patrol car at the crash site is flashing. Biker didn´t see the warning ligth? Natural selection ...
I've done a lot of ride-alongs with a friend who is a state policeman. When a crotch rocketeer would blow by, he wouldn't even budge. He said it wasn't worth risking the safety of other drivers to take the 10 miles it would take at triple-digit speeds just to catch up to him for speeding. He said natural selection would do the job for him.
Problem is tho that he could kill somebody else while driving at those speeds but however it is a conundrum indeed damned if you do damned if you dont...hard one to call.

I’ve had 900’s and 9-5’s, always Aero’s, for over 30 years. I’ve left many a “really fast car” behind. They are the most underrated fast cars. Their speed and acceleration surprises most, even bike riders. Long live old SAAB’s.
My Volvo s60r did the same thing to me, upon buying it I was like well it’ll be a good reliable car. Little did I know that 5 cylinder turbo setup was a rocket!
Hitting something on a motorcycle at over 100 mph is a lot like falling out of an airplane, from 10K feet. The impact is about the same (terminal velocity of a falling human is about 118 mph).
atleast its instant when flying head first into a asphalt at those speeds. Darwin awards are "rewarded" every year in motorcycle community, people easily ride faster than they are comfortable and used to
I've been a biker since I was 16 I'm now 64. I've ridden everything from 50cc to 1200cc over the years and would never ride like that with or without a passenger. I kept my racing style where it belonged on the track, mainly Oulton park U.K. I've had many off's on the road due to oil and diesel. only time I have ever been injured was when stationary and hit from behind by stupid car drivers I now walk with a limp. I'm afraid this rider is One of many that should not be on high power sports bikes. A sad day for his family.😔

Sure, it took me a minute or 2 more to get from A to B sometimes. And sometimes it took 10 minutes more. Totally worth the wait. I drive without stress. I want to go from A to B safely, without stress. And even in today's traffic this is still possible. It is not worth dying on the roads while trying to get from A to B. And so it is very worth it to drive defensively. And anticipate. And solve mistakes others make. Etc. Etc. @@Koopsstuff PS; it may cost a brake pad or 2 more than it should,. but totally worth the 25 bucks.
It's depressing how much the variety in traffic has changed in just 10 years. There are a lot of 70s/80s/90s cars in this video driving around normally that are now uncommon/rare today. I was paying more attention to all of the cars they passed instead of the police chase.
Try 25 years ago. Roads were incredibly quiet and drivers respectful. Biggest thing, they indicated! They waved at you and had curtesy. Now it’s just selfish self-centred arrogance ‘me,me’. Glad I drove in those ‘days’ because it ain’t coming back! Driving was a passion and experience and bloody enjoyable. The only place I experienced anything like it today was driving over 200miles away to the highlands of Scotland. Now with the NC500 even that’s destroyed….
Exactly. Fellow young idiots trying to shift the blame in these days when we increasingly seem to live in societies where people think they can do whatever they want just cuz it feels good. Selfish individualism that's all.
When I began riding while in h.s. (1957) , it was on a new lightweight with a top speed of about 70mph and our speed limits were in the area of 45 to 50 in semi-rural areas leading to where my job was at a grocery store. Many excursions were passed with a break-in speed of 35mph and I had some small accidents that lead me to learn what it was about. Fast forward to today and the environment and attitudes are both inflated to the point that driver ability isn't broad based and riding carries more serious risks. I spent about 20 years as a bike mechanic and now retired but when I even think of blending with today's traffic on a motorcycle, it actually scares me.

Regular chaps don't drive powerful bikes without license and without a license plate. This goes to show what can happen if you think you can drive however the hell you want in a public road putting everyone at risk. I'm just glad the passenger wasn't hurt.
@@sillyoldbastard3280 Yeah, he might not have a license because his was revoked or something. This behaviour isnt something well adjusted people normally engage in.
I agree, Cloggie. I am a fellow biker, and I would NEVER put another life in danger like he did. The passenger on that bike is lucky to be alive. When I see someone ride like that with a passenger, it saddens me. Clearly, someone riding a motorcycle without the proper training. People on sport bikes think they can ride fast just because they own one.
In this case, the police were ordered to stand down because the chase became to risky. The Police can be heard in this video they would crash into him. Also they ignored a direct order from the commander and said let's get this sob. I remember it was big news back then. The Police caused the death.
Not too long ago, I was driving the 580 out of San Francisco going home. I got passed by a biker easily doing 130. Someone down the line didn't see him in time and changed lanes. By the time I got there, he was dead with a broken neck. It was just his time to go. Sadly, he was maybe 25. If you want to ride a crotch rocket, you accept the responsibility of your actions.
Apart from the tragedy to the bike rider, don't forget that for the car-driver, even when physically unharmed, it can be a traumatic experience too. Those superbikes are very very tempting. It takes a lot of discipline and luck to not get hurt in the long run. A friend of me bought a new streetbike many years ago. A few days later his brother (also a friend of me) borrowed it for a short ride of maybe an hour, crashed, and has been in a wheelchair ever since.
@@Nightshft42 as a motorcycle rider, big bikes take a level of control few have. Mental control I mean: most of those can break the highway speed limits in first gear. It's insane. I'm good with my 300cc because I can't speed unless I really really try to, but at the same time it's not enough to stay at highway speed and it's not comfortable...
@@Francedefence You'd also have another approach: from the ones with mopets 95% are maniacs living in the city. From the ones with more serious motorbikes, only 10% are maniacs, but 85% run too fast in the roads (all drivers reading this would agree, but it is my perception). This is why they account the majority of casualties in EU. Only behind the pedal cyclers. This last are official data.
You have two types of pilots. Those who have crashed, and those who will crash. I didn't ask nor do i consent to them flying over my head at triple digit speeds, putting my life at risk, just for their selfish adrenaline rush. Walk like the rest of us!
hahaha... and that's why I'm an ex-biker! I was always nervous prior to every ride. Extreme butterflies. I was fine the second I was riding. Everyone I rode with had an accident. I didn't, but I was sure my time would come soon enough. Having had a couple of near incidents because drivers are blind, I eventually decided I was literally riding my luck. Oddly enough the one make of car my actual riding instructor warned me as being the worst actually turned out to be the closest I came to being driven into as they changed lanes (and no I actually never cared for speed; just loved the sensation of riding). I don't think anyone should get a drivers licence until they've passed a bike test; it's the only way to teach drivers. Sure, some bikers are irresponsible but few drivers can be trusted.

@@DW-ts5ki Possibly but I'm talking about drivers in general. A whole lot of them are in that lane before the police arrive - same as in UK. That lane should be empty unless overtaking. Think so many think it's an extra lane to cruise in
@Donald Polson when traffic is high, absolutely it is a travel lane. If you're doing the speed limit. that lane is to be used. It's not just for passing. If your doing the limit no one should be passing. I will give it up to faster moving vehicles. That cop is a jerk
@@DW-ts5ki the left lane is to only be used for overtaking or if there's a queue of cars. What kind of debate can there be? The motorcycle driver violated the rules and did not even intend to stop, he hoped to hide - the result is obvious, the motorcycle driver drove himself into the grave and almost took another passenger there. There are two kinds of motorcyclists: fast riders and old drivers. There are no fast old drivers. I had a Saab 9-5 Aero a few yrs ago and they are very fast cars. I only paid £300 for mine in the uk and with 260hp 270ft/bs torque they make for really cheap performance cars.
As an HR Director, hired a nice young fella who had a background in Rally Car Racing. You would assume he was a "careful" and skilled driver when on or off road. I had driven with him in a car and indeed he seemed quite subdued, patient, and aware of his surroundings. Jump forward to a Saturday morning when he decided to ride his sport bike to work and unfortunately, crossing a bridge at a high rate of speed he lost control, hit the concrete median and was killed. The bike continued on for another 500'. Sad day.
Riding a motor bike at high speed is totally different from a car. Always have the headlights on and when one over takes, have a gap of at least 10 feet. He should have slowed down at that junction. It was obvious that someone might pull out. I travel across Thailand all the time at high speed

Or at least, let him/her off during the few seconds that he's well ahead of the cops.

well stated Eric, he had opportunities to drop off his passenger and carry on and these things need to happen EARLY in a chase before helicopters are involved, once they are its no longer rational to attempt a getaway.

The turbocharged 2.3 L engine in the Saab 9-5 Aero supposedly has more torque than a Porche 911 turbo! That's a pretty bold statement. Makes me wonder if the Swedish police have modified the engine in any way? He really opens up the throttle@16:16 mins. Honestly, I'm surprised that the Swedish cops actually even engage in high speed pursuits to apprehend non violent individuals, just due to the unnecessary risks of causing an accident. Especially when a helicopter is involved. Seems counterintuitive in a country that takes a common sense approach to so many other things. Esp dealing with a crotch rocket! I once owned an '86 900 Turbo, and that little four cylinder engine had some crazy acceleration when the turbocharger kicked in. The turbo unit even had a protective wastegate that would suddenly depressurize the system if you put too much pressure on the turbocharger. It felt like someone stomped on the brake pedal! Very nicely made cars. I wouldn't want to have to pay for engine work on a Saab in the United States these days though. I remember my Saab mechanic in AZ had a photograph on his wall of the graduation of his training class at the old Saab-America headquarters off of interstate 95 in Connecticut. Can't remember what town that was. He was in the first class. Too bad Saab discontinued their imports to the US. Their cars had very good safety ratings.

Swedish law demands that speeders be clocked over a set distance and their speed averaged by the on board computer. This is why these cops had to follow him until he got back on the open road, at which time his speed was averaged at 127 Km/h (135 mph). At that point, they became the arresting officers; so, although the bike was being tracked from the sky and road blocks were being erected, the arresting cops had to be there when the bike was stopped. In Sweden, it is not sufficient to simply identify the bike; its offending driver must also be identified at the scene to prove he was the one driving it. Thus, these cops were not trying to overtake the bike once the violation was verified; and the driver of this cruiser was an incredible pro who waltzed through traffic at 125 mph with no lurching, swerving, heavy-footed braking, or close calls: poetry in motion. Compare this to the local cop we got stuck behind at one point.
That matches with what I read about Sweden's laws about having to catch the very driver, not just identify the vehicle. It's a loophole for the crazy and just madness. In my native Germany, you may get away once or twice by denying to be the driver - but you'll soon be obliged by court order to document every single trip made with any vehicle registered in your name - including the driver's identity. I wonder how long the Swedish government and parliament have allowed this to go on...
The Swedish Police act like car chases are a little boring by the tone of their voices on the radio , cool and calm like this is routine stuff all the time . Good job . Running from the cops is really a stupid thing to do and the bad guys still do . Idiots . Good video.
The mind boggles that some people on here have any sympathy for the biker or think the police acted wrongly. Travelling at that speed, refusing to pull over when requested to do so by police and riding without a numberplate. The skull T shirt and the middle finger make it pretty clear how much respect the rider had for the law. What else are the police supposed to do?
TheDirector17 It's not about respect for the law at this point, it's about saving lives. Tell me, what happens when a bike goes down at that speed? exactly. What other outcome would there be with a motorcyclist refusing to stop? The ones in control of the situation should always have the will and intelligence to maintain a positive outcome. Especially law enforcement. And did you see how many people the officer endangered on this man hunt?
If you ride like that eventually it’s going to catch up with you. Total disregard for other motorists who could have died as a result of his actions. I ride a motorcycle and I ride safe and sane. Absolutely agree. Even when riding safely on our part anything can happen, a branch on the road around a blind corner in the twisties, car drivers not noticing you to name a few. I have several near crash/death experiences on every longer tour I take and I'd not recommend upping those odds by being reckless.
Pursuits are difficult to judge. In Australia we have a problem where everyone knows if they are dangerous the police let them go. So when a pursuit starts the driver increases the risk - swerve at oncomming traffic, swerve at pedestrians and drive on the wrong side of the highway - and the pursuit gets cancelled, rewarding the crook. In a way the safety policy causes much more danger than anything else.

I find all those comments that insinuate it was the police´s fault completely ridiculous. He had no license, was putting someone else in danger, and he clearly noticed the police and THAT was when he started really speeding (which he did before as well). But this of course will not deter a bunch of conspiracy idiots from whining and whailing about how sad it is that this hope for mankind had to go so early. This guy brought his death upon himself, and better him than someone innocent. Mark him up for the Darwin Award. Fortunately, his former GF survived. Hopefully, she will make a better and more informed choice with her next boyfriend, unless she wants her remnants being scraped of the guardrails at some point.
Most sensible comment ! Why no one thinks, about other, innocent road users, who may have been killed or injured by the one who made decision to risk his own life ??
2hanscgn You're right and wrong. You can't place the blame solely on either party. Police are not supposed to engage in such dangerous chase sequences. And in this instance, they were even ordered NOT to chase the guy. The police, by entrapping this guy into committing a crime they can actually pull him over for, put many lives in danger. It's not the cops' fault he's dead, it was obviously his choice to speed. The police are at fault for repeatedly escalating the situation which resulted in death. Gross negligence on their part. Extreme stupidity on his.
Dane Wilbanks EXACTLY. People try and justify the actions of either party, when both were at fault. If the policy hadn't chased, he wouldn't be dead. If he hadn't sped ridiculously, he wouldn't be dead. Either of the two would have resulted in him living. Period. Seems like an incredible waste of police resources if you ask me, waste of human life too.
Dane Wilbanks IF those cops were ordered to end the pursuit then it is indeed faulty behaviour on their part, which personally I would not mark down as them being guilty (not even responsible) of his death though. Other than that I cannot agree with what you wrote. First of, what would be the alternative? Let him pass ad thereby invite anyone else to engage in such behaviour with impunity? Regarding entrapment: It is strange, but when I´m behind the wheel and suddenly find flashing police-lights behind me I slow down and pull to the side and wait what´s going to happen. It is not that this guy had no choice, he made a deliberate, conscious decision to escalate the entire situation, not the police. Here is an analogy which comes to my mind: Imagine a bank robbery with hostages. As is usual, the police arrives in numbers. Let´s imagine that, upon seeing the police is there, our hostage taker panics, looses his mind and kills one of the hostages. Who is at fault for the death of the hostage? I believe the answer is quite clear. Before you say that this is a bad or exaggerated analogy, think about it for a minute: The guy on the motorcycle had in a way a hostage: His GF. And he was putting her life (as well as his) in danger. I am sure there is also a discussion going on in the US about the dangers of high speed pursuits by the police. I would like to se some statistics about "collateral damage" occuring thereby. But in a way taking hostages is very comparable to what someone fleeing the police is doing: He operates with the indirect threat that, if the pursuit continues, a third party may be harmed. We have to make a conscious decision whether or not we yield to that threat in such situations. Personally I prefer not to.
Easy Cure, make it a 5 year jail sentence if a Motorcycle rider has no Plate, Get the Plate number in the chase early, If the person is tagged get him at home later, arrest him no matter what if he fails to produce himself or the rider of the felony speeding. Make it a 10 year Felony for using a hide plate, and only use risky chase like this if a life has already been lost or this is a second offence of the same bike. Always use a Chopper to pursue to the end. I am guilty of being chased, I was chased 2 dozen times back in the 80s in New York City as a 16 year old kid, I was reckless and bulletproof in my head. Make a Night time riding by people under 21 Illegal and a 6 month sentence as a first offence, this will curb many chases as kids ( like I was ) prefer to ride at night in the cover of darkness to get away from police. If I knew back then that Long term jail was in my future for doing them things I would have thought twice.
I think it's cool. Stockholm looks like a cool, clean city. The cops stay professional, calm and collected. American cops would be freakin out and fuming all over themselves to get their hands on this rider. You know how it goes in this country! Man, that Saab can fly!
For your benefit; you can multiply the speed (in km/h) by 0.6 (so multiply 245 by 6 and then divide by 10). You can also google "245kph to mph" and the first line will show you. That way you don't have to wait for someone on youtube to reply ;)
Excellent driving by the officer concerned. It was interesting to note the differences in procedure between Swedish traffic units and ours here in the UK. Had this occurred in the UK I am almost certain this unit would have been pulled off the pursuit having dropped back so far. As for the motorcyclist, he is responsible for his own death. He showed scant regard for the safety of himself, his passenger and other road users. Thankfully his passenger survived, could have been a whole lot worse.
If law in enforcement in any country stops pursuing motorcycles, you can bet bank robbers, murders or any other criminal will start riding motorcycles. The saying will be, “If you ride a motorcycle and commit any crime, you will not do the time.”

Having been a rider for 9 to 10 years but not any longer, I can tell you in that period of time I have accumulated a wraith of unpredictable experiences on the road that have led to incidents and injury's. You might live in the US where roads are wide and straight, but I live in the N.Ireland where roads are decisively less forgiving and my percentages would look more like: 100% of a journey, you the rider is at risk of yourself, or others around you, or other unforeseen factors on the road.
Same in the us man. I stopped riding after 2 separate incidents caused me to crash through no fault of my own. I once owned an '86 900 Turbo, and that little four cylinder engine had some crazy acceleration when the turbocharger kicked in. The turbo unit even had a protective wastegate that would suddenly depressurize the system if you put too much pressure on the turbocharger.

127 kmh is 79mph not 135mph.
TheDirector17
It's not about respect for the law at this point, it's about saving lives. Tell me, what happens when a bike goes down at that speed? exactly.
What other outcome would there be with a motorcyclist refusing to stop?
The ones in control of the situation should always have the will and intelligence to maintain a positive outcome. Especially law enforcement.

The. Chasing cop did xlnt job, xlnt decision making at high stress, he should teach H-Speed chase in traffic tho chopper helps it doesn't do driving
For your benefit; you can multiply the speed (in km/h) by 0.6 (so multiply 245 by 6 and then divide by 10). You can also google "245kph to mph" and the first line will show you. That way you don't have to wait for someone on youtube to reply ;)
What a sad ending for all concerned, I have to say well done to the Swedish, very professional

@@Mr.FirebIadeDr.JiIIAIiceCooper I agree about the wide taillight but what about the white design on the passenger's jacket that you don't see at 0:20?
@@wa6roy I watched whoIe video and she was adjusting her shirt a few times, you couId see or not see white print at times. Best exampIe is at 17:14 and you can aIso hear that it's the same bike with exact same exhaust note as bike at the start of video. 2008-2010 ZX-10R with Racefit Growler sounds Iike no other bikes and it's not a very popuIar exhaust. Chances that 2 bIack '08-'10 ZX-10Rs with same pipe are running from cops in same video are very very sIim.
20:01 - Last time the bike is seen by the pursuer
Pursuer in a last ditch effort peaked at ~152 mph for a couple of seconds down a straight before construction narrowed the path
That bike can hit 150mph+ at will in just a few seconds
These bone heads had no chance of catching that bike. That chase should've been called off after ten minutes of them not seeing the bike. SMH
@@the_gixxer_mike The helicopter is following the bike, and these guys were far enough behind the idiot that it doesn't qualify as being in pursuit. I don't have a bit of sympathy for this moron.
@@the_gixxer_mike a chopper found the biker
I remember reading about this in the newspapers. Apparently they tried to sue the police for wrongdoing chasing at these speeds. I think they put a new policy in place to limit the speed of chases after this happened. iirc the girl was just like 16 or 17
This didn't even look like a real chase to me. Just a dumb, predictable accident.
One thing I don’t understand is how he caught up to that bike when he was at a stop.
Helicopter
The guy should not have been out riding a super bike when he had no license, it was only sheer luck the female wasn't killed. It takes years to become a good rider, any idiot can go fast.
Was it worth losing his life over, and the police are not to blame as the helicopter was safely following this bike.
yes the police are to blame. they are 100% to blame... you think he didn't know about the chopper? or that cops where still following him? they pushed him to take stupid risks and people got hurt. the police themselves did not drive that safe either and almost crashed plenty of times. these cops where more reckless than that biker was.
Absolutely right - not only was the Kawasaki rider a cocking a snook at the police, but at the law, at other road users and society in general, to say that they didn't matter, that his individual freedom counted more than the common good and common safety.
Yes and as a great man once said( Good Riddance to bad rubbish) 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂!
Sad to see this, but if police have a hunch that its not a safe driving, of course need to react. Have you ever driven in &around Stockholm area? I have. But yes , if they know the bike, vid evidence etc. they can pick up the driver later on anyway, no need to chase. Then if there is alco or drugs involved surely complicates. Do not know if this was the case.
They need to have proof of who was driving the bike, a hunch doesn't hold up in court.
This is why you have one man only concentrating on driving and the other doing all of the talking and note-taking. Makes a much better team!
Is really hypnotic and a very nice city and country
I still want to spend some holidays in Sweden :)
This happens maybe twice a year or something. Its very rare.

Police killed that man, they should have let him ride it out...Murder
So relieved that passenger girl survived. 👍
That was my main concern too
She was with and stayed on that ride. That tells you all you need to know about her.
Stop simping.
