    I finally got my 1977 (Canadian built) 20 hp Evinrude set up right on my 12 foot super light Starcraft. I lifted the stern board 3.5 inches to eliminate the nose dive, well almost I can give it about 90% throttle. The later changes on the Johnson and Evinrude's 90's-2000's weren't for the better, the old saying if it ain't broke don't fix it. The choke lever has a dual purpose for starting and stopping. Now if I can seal up all the leaks on my boat I'll be a happy man. I don't know how you work in that heat, looking forward to seeing the 40 hp in the lake.

    This video reminds me once I was reparing a old Johnson. Every time I adjust the spark timming, after some minutes of the engine running it loose it and shut off by its own. At least I disasembly its magnets arround 5 times and at last I figure that all was muy fault because when ready the timming adjust, I forgot to tight snug the screw that keep it in place. At least 5 or 6 hours of hard work for something that stupid.
    Excellent work and video my man!! Keep this saga of this old outboard on!!!

    Hilarious... I literally just got back from finishing a 1995 20hp example i picked up on ye olde craigslist (yes, its a rare 15'' mota, but sadly remote setup. even rarer, it's a pull start short remote. lightest model made haha) and I did the EXACT SAME THING with the primer... pumped it 5x... flooded. of course mine's got the smaller plastic top 6hp carb they used so even smaller bowl. but 2 pumps and she fires up now. new power pack (old one wasn't pumping out 1 volt to the coils lol), water pump, head cover gasket and of course thermostat. had to tune the low speed needle to get rid of that "lean sneeze" but she runs like a breeze now. Keep up the great vids!

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. I don't know, never been on the Ohio River. But I guess you could.......

  • @77phong

    Hi Sir, my same motor is doing sorta the opposite. It'll run in the "warm" position only. If I push the pump in, the motor cuts out. Likewise if i pinch the primer line. Could it still be a faulty primer pump or should I be looking elsewhere?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. The warm up position is feeding it fuel to help with warm up time. I never use it here in Florida. Pushing the pump knob in turns off any fuel flow unless its leaking. If it was leaking it would be lean sneezing. So it sounds like the motor needs the fuel from the primer pump in order to run/idle, when you push it in, cutting off the fuel, it dies and that's telling me you need a good carb cleaning. It's not getting fuel through the idle circuit. There's tiny holes in the upper inside of the carb throat just behind the butterfly, if they're clogged it won't idle and no amount of carb spray will clean them, they almost always need to be "poked" with a small wire like from a bread tie. Same with the high speed jet down in the bottom of the carb bowl, a toothpick is good for that. Sounds like the fuel pump is pumping but never hurts to double check it too. If need be, check out my carb cleaning video, "The Two Most Important Things"! Hope this helps! Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    • @77phong
      @77phong ปีที่แล้ว

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 oh I forgot to say I did do a carb rebuild and made sure those holes were cleared. I also replaced the fuel hoses from fuel pump to the carb and bowl to the primer pump

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@77phong is this a motor you just got or you've had for awhile? if you've had it for awhile, did it run before you did the carb rebuild? Double check that fuel pump. Set the slow speed needle at 1.5 turns out from seated. Prime it up 2-3 pulls and crank it up with the primer closed. If it doesn't fire up pull the plugs and see if they're wet or dry.

    • @77phong
      @77phong ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just got the motor. The previous owner said it did run before but I'm thinking they always had that primer pump left out in the warm position. I had never seen one before and didn't know the correct operation of it until I saw your video. When the owner showed me the motor running he had left it out so I thought that was the way it was supposed to be (thanks for showing me the right way).
      Another thing I noticed is the fuel primer bulb doesn't get real hard even with lots of pumps 😂...saw it leaking at a the fuel pump connection to the carb. Tightened that up stopped the leaking but the primer bulb still didn't improve that much. I'll try your start up method but have pulled the plugs before and they're always wet

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@77phong It can't be that hard to figure out, when the plugs are always wet I'm assuming it wasn't firing from be flooded.? If the tank primer bulb isn't getting firm than the carb needle isn't seating to stop the fuel flow or the bulb is bad. Are there two fuel lines coming from the primer pump, one going to the top carb nipple and one at the nipple on the intake manifold? what model is it? have you done a compression test?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Sorry I didn't get back with you sooner but I've been battling a hurricane. Anyway I can't advise you on a motor from a one sentence description. You'll have to do some homework. Shop around for price, what are they going for right now, what's the condition. Take it for a test run like your buying a car. Check the compression, check the oil in the gearcase. Don't let the seller think your chomping at the bit. $1500 usually means 1300, and you may even get it for 12. Running in a tank means nothing, if he's confident he'll let you take it for a run and check it out. It's just business. Nobody ever gets asking price, unless they're desperate and asking a low price you can't pass up. That's just my 2 cents and I hope you get a good deal. Thanks again & stay tuned !

    How do you test the coil packs? I have an 85' 25HP Johnson tiller control. Just bought the boat. Took it out 5 weeks ago and it ran like a champ. Took it out a week ago, and suddenly nothing. I can't get it to even tease me with the possibility of firing up. I just can't figure out how it went from running perfectly on the 2nd pull, to not wanting to fire at all. I'm so frustrated. Plugs are wet, but not dripping, so it isn't flooded. Do the power packs just suddenly crap out like that for no good reason? Same question about the coils. I need to figure something out before I take dynamite to the motor as my solution. Lol

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha! Join the club Shane. Thanks for tuning in. In a situation like this I would just go back the basic's. It almost sounds like your kill switch is bad and shorting out, killing the spark. Plugs are wet so they're getting fuel. Check for spark, no spark, check that kill. Screw the coil test, they may test ok but as they warm up they go south. If theres spark it should start. If no spark and kill switch is good it's probably the power pack. Yes they'll just take a dump on ya. Curious to know what you find out. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    TOB- I have a question for you: I have an Evinrude 25 HP, I found out from the code it's a 1988. It was my dad's. I never took it out much, but would start it up and run 2-3 times yearly with battery, and it always ran very well. About 3-4 years ago, the battery wouldn't start it and I couldn't get it to hand crank start, so I just left it. I did fog through the spark plug hole then. My question- what should I check for, before trying to start it, so I don't tear anything up if there is a problem? What's the best steps get her started after years? Thanks very much..

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. I dont think you'll tear anything up. You can spray some lubricant in the cylinders if your worried about it like wd40 or 2 stroke oil, then crank it a couple times to blow out the excess. I would just go through the basics. Check for spark first. More than likely you'll need to take the carb off and clean it. Its probably clogged from sitting that long. Thats usually the problem. I just did a carb cleaning video, "the two most important things" if you think that might help. Thanks for watching !

    Hi,I have the same model,You mentioned that the "O"rings in the primer were causing smoke.

    The compression is good,and the fuel mix is correct.
    Great vids,love 'em.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey. Thanks. The primer has THREE positions: "OFF/warm up/PRIME" Be sure your closing it completely and it locks into position. If it's in warm up it will cause your motor to smoke more and possibly stall. If the o-rings are worn it could be leaking a little and causing the extra fuel/smoke. Or your carb may need adjusted/rebuilt. It's a process of elimination. Try pinching off the fuel supply to the primer like I did in the video and see if it makes a difference. I am full of issues and questions.Is there suppose to be a hole in water copper tube about two inches or so above the brass shift rod clamp.I hooked a hose up to it and water was coming out a small hole and no where else.Where else should it be coming out if I run water up thru the tube?

      @@wish2fish37 Hey. wow. Not Sure. It's my First Rodeo with the Older, Bigger Outboard. I'll need a day or so to catch up to you. It doesn't sound like what we know or use to but I'm sure we'll figure it. Hang in there. I have To "Work work" so I won't be available during the day. We'll figure it out, shouldn't be a big deal. I'll be in touch

    Your misfortune is a very valuable lesson for all the viewers. This stupid primer system is very confusing to owners and causes uneccessary problems. First, you pointed out that it is difficult to tell if this primer is actually priming or not...The knob moved easily when you first primed it, this is because there was no fuel in the primer mechanism. Once fuel was in the primer, you felt definite resistance when priming, meaning it was actually doing its job. This is very confusing, and owners usually don't understand why they are having difficulty. The next thing that is important to understand is that this primer has THREE positions:
    "OFF/warm up/PRIME". Owners oftentimes forget (or just don't know) to push the primer all the way back in after a cold start, the engine runs OK until it warms up a bit, then stalls out. This is because when in the warm up position (half way out), a little fuel is allowed to bypass the the primer, fuel pressure pushes it through the primer hose into the carb. There is another mistake that is very easy to make on some of these engines, but I don't think it can occur on this one though. Some older models of this engine have a nipple on the bowl drain plug, pressurized fuel from the carb bowl is delivered through this nippled fitting to the manual primer. Inadvertently swapping the fuel lines directs fuel from the fuel pump into the carb through the nippled carb bowl drain screw, which bypasses the float system in floods the carb instantly....
    I would love to meet the bonehead engineers that thought this primer system was a good idea....Oh, that's right, I used to work for them.....

      Hahaha. Yeah some things were edited out and I'm a little shocked it didnt dawn on me in the the first place after what I went through with the 1990 30 hp, you may remember, I was leaving the primer open, by accident of course, and I thought I may have done it this time too. But that wasnt the case and it did get edited out. I think if it ever happens again I'll know right off the bat what the problem is, and I'm thinking a small primer bulb from a weed eater would work just fine and a lot cheaper too ! hahaha

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 they should have left well enough alone, the choke system worked fine...
