I only knew where it was because it's part of the Genoa trade node in EU4 and it's one of the important trade nodes. There's a few other place-names I know only because they are strategically important in EU4 or Crusader Kings. I couldn't tell you much about their actual cultural or historical significance other than maybe who owned that bit of clay in 1444 or 1066. I still sometimes have momentary confusion looking at European maps and seeing Nice as part of France.

Really should try Sunless Sea. It has boats. It has creeping dread. It has layers of obfuscation and ancient plots. It has situational cannibalism. It has sea monsters. It has exploration. It has an island where poastmen consumed by an obsession to deliver the mail end up congregating, shuffling through unending tides of undeliverable parcels. It's also largely driven by text boxes and menus, but they are extraordinarily well written.

You see, the trade from the Ligurian sea doesn't flow into Champagne because it's an end node. And that also means it never reaches the English Channel, where Antwerpen is located. So, for a country located in the English Channel (which is also an end node, flowing from Novgorod -> Lübeck, Caribbean -> Bordeaux -> Champagne and the American East Coast -> North Sea) to benefit from a different end node such as the Ligurian sea (principal port: Genoa) they would have to privateer, something that involves boats and cannons and sticky fingers.

My favorite age of sail game is Sid Meier's Pirates! (2004), and I feel like there hasn't really been anything that quite does ship combat like it did, having to finagle around getting the wind into your sails while chasing an opponent but also swinging around for a broadside once your cannons are reloaded and you're in range, and out of combat the agony of trying to get somewhere when the wind just isn't on your side. I'd recommend Yahtzee try it if he's ever up to doing something retro.

I'd really like to know Yahtzee's take on Sunless Sea. It just seems like it would tickle his fancy in all the right places, being distinctly British in its style of writing, and of course it's all about being a Captain on a boat so he will love it by default.

I'm not the only one to say it Yahtzee, Sunless sea is amazing. I've put hundreds of hours into it and savored every moment of it. Goes from incredibly human to lovecraftian in an instant. Has given me some of my most memorable successes, and closest escapes... as well as meaningful death of character. Which was my own, actually, when I died suffocating out at sea engulfed in terror, consumed by the madness of a gaping abyss.
And then I proceeded to do tens of other runs. If that itch is still scratching, how about you try it?

Yahtzee: "One day as a child I found an ancestor's diary while rummaging around in granddad's attic."
"He was a dockworker at Kingston Upon Hull who was pressganged into serving in the Royal Navy during the War of the Third Coalition during the Napolenic Wars."
"He wrote that there was a lot of rum, buggery and the lash. Scurvy was apparently not uncommon. The filthy poop deck was literally intended for that purpose. Apparently pretty much the only thing to eat was rock hard insect infected slices of bread and the only thing to drink was doses of rum or non-alcoholic beer."
"No one knew how to swim and if a ship went down there was no chance of rescue anyway".
"That's why when he came back to Britain and was legally able to leave the Royal Navy he moved to Rugby Warwickshire inland in the middle of the country, so that he need never again be reminded of the sea".
"I read nautical adventure novels to try to discover if there was anything interesting or joyful about life in the Royal Navy during that time at all."
Of course this never happened but it's be fun if it did.

@4:20 Oddly enough, the Dutch were actually a dominant part of trade with northern Italy at certain times, even going so far as to create merchant colonies there. It's a bit of forgotten history though, because the Dutch ultimately couldn't compete with France, so the Mediterranean trade greatly diminished.
Incidentally, a big part of that was France being able to protect its merchant ships better in the Mediterranean, so a bounty office in Antwerp trying to solve the problem by paying someone else to deal with pirates, which would ideally cost less than the cost of a permanent navy presence, isn't that far off.
