I’m so glad I’m not the only one who believes playable Bowser is always a point upward
As someone who has played almost exclusively Bowser in every Mario Kart, Smash Bros, RPG, Sports game, and even bought the Mario Party where Bowser was playable after skipping the last 6 or so...

In this game yes. He has a bazooka and windup drones as his weapons which both blow everything up. I try to use him every chance I can since he removes cover and the drones are useful as cannon fodder to enemy fire. Good thing they got rid of friendly fire in this game or half of the characters could kill everyone with there attacks.
Because he's always the most interesting character in any Mario game
Adding Boswer as a playable character has been a huge thumbs up for me. Feel like he never really gets credit for anything so when there is a chance for him to get credit in a game like this I always go straight for him. Also I ditched the mains first chance I got. My default 3 were Boswer, Rabbid Rosalina, and Peach. Best combo all the way.
This is the most I’ve ever agreed with Yatzee. From Bowser as a playable character, to the weird menu screens always closing. The only criticism I have is that I found the first game challenging at times and this one felt like a walk through. I wish they hadn’t cheaped out on an opening cut screen. Will the DLC be Zelda themed?
I like how despite being a villain, Bowser's painted as a model parent.

if more villains were good parents, you wouldnt have annoying arcs were the child of a villain winds up allying/hooking up with the protagonist.

2:45 That’s just what happened to poor old Rayman. First game they both shared the spotlight, but then when the sequel came, the Rabbids kicked him out of his own franchise; scribbled his name out of the title and made it their world with him barley clinging onto it.

It happened with Popeye and Olive Oyl too, didja know she used to be the main character? And it only took like a week before Popeye was seen as the more entertaining character!
Rayman was still the protagonist in the 2nd game, but his role diminished a bit, and did even less by the 3rd game. By the 4th game (Rabbids Go Home, which is a pretty good game BTW) they were the protagonists and Rayman was nowhere to be found until his return a few years later in his own series.
@@stigrabbid589 True, but like in this game with Mario, you didn’t have to play as Rayman and just be a Rabbid in all the minigames. And let’s be honest: we all played the Rabbid cause they had better costumes.
I didn't even realize rabbids and Rayman were from the same franchise. Poor Rayman indeed.
I'm not sure why, but I find it extremely wholesome when Yahtzee enjoys a cute, child-friendly game that doesn't take place in a dying kingdom full of undead or contains graphic violence and blood.

When he admitted that he cried while playing Spiritfarer (which I also did... because bloody hell that game is heavy), I was like... oh wow. This dude is human. An amazing writer of a human for sure, but still a human. Very wholesome.

While the writing is still plagued by Ubisoft’s signature “pumpkin spice is still funny right?” Style of comedy. The personalities of the rabbid people are so good, they can carry the comedy on their own.
I gotta admit that pumpkin spice joke did get a chuckle out of me, though
I laughed my ass off at the first Pumpkin Spice joke. It was moreso the Key and Peele problem where a joke is repeated and dragged on so long by the end I was groaning. The game did that a lot of times not just with Pumpkin Spice and may be its only writing-based flaw. The only running gag that didn't get old for me was anything involving Rabbid Mario.
@@Dyskresiac The main thing I wish is that, having played half the worlds so far (in case this improves in the latter half), I wish the Mario characters were a bit more involved in even the comedic cutscenes. Kingdom Battle was pretty good about their presence, whether as a straight man like Mario staring at Rabbid Mario breaking out a Lute, or part of the zany elements like Luigi trying to sneak a peak at Rabbid Peach's pictures after the World 1 Boss.
Sparks of Hope, while funny to me, moreso has the Mario characters there for the story cutscenes, but generally leaves a lot of the side-talk and flavor dialogue to the Rabbids. It feels a lot more like the Mario cast being swept up in a Rabbids adventure than the Rabbids colliding with their world as Kingdom Battle managed for me.
@@papershadow There are side quests that give every character enough time to shine. I feel by the end though it isn't due to differential in screen time so much as it does memorable moments.
Those sorts of themes you talk about are replicated but I feel they lack the punch the second time around.

Same as someone who finds the word silly and tries not to use it even mentally. Rather fitting that the end slides of this one parody a zombie infection given this word feels like the verbal equivalent of one at times, like this is _Pontypool_ or something.

The Tomb of the Unknown Cupcake sounds like something that would fit well in the Mario Universe.
If this actually ends up in Yahtzee's Top 5, that means that this would be not only the first Mario Game in the top 5, but also the first Rabbids game there as well. We live in confusing times...
Yahtzee will probably keep it out for that very reason, he’ll lose all his anti-mainstream credentials
To be fair, he said that he would've put Odyssey in his top 5 of 2017 if not for a Hat in Time. He acknowledged that it was one of the year's best games, he just didn't want to flood the list with cartoon-y platforming games.
It would also be weird for a Ubisoft game, which are generally shoo-ins for blandest.
I will say that that the sequel is a lesson in learning from what was wrong from the first time. It ain't perfect, but it is better. Also, it's kinda refreshing that the rabbids have a IQ higher than a rest stop marmalade sandwich, and actually have distinct personalities and character types.
Then the third time goes a bit too experimental, someone forgets to, ahem, "work something out of their system" before they start writing, someone definitely takes some shrooms, and then Nintendo big men come bleach everything and everyone starts to hate it.
Every. Damn. Time.

I mean, by all standards, the story is done and over, taking in account the dlc possibilities. And to say there's another surviving fragment of the incident from the first game would be just horse shit.

What was wrong with Kingdom Battle? Secondary Weapons, Secondary Skills, relatively balanced fights, a Couch PvP mode, references galore, creative jokes, tolerable Rabbid shenanigans, and some of the most hilarious enemy designs I've ever seen:
- Ziggies are just fun to shoot. They sure talk a lotta ship for basic enemies in one-turn-kill range!
- Smashers are one of the best mid-gameplay punchlines I've ever seen. A tank that's also a melee glass cannon that's also a speed demon if you don't play your cards right? Somebody's getting bullied, and it's either you or the Smasher!
- Peekaboos, the sniper enemies...have Magnet Dance. It sounds like a _terrible_ moveset to play with, and it's a good thing making that garbage work isn't your problem!
I wonder if we are getting more of this partnership down the line. Mario must save princess peach in Radio Tower Land. Unlock all the map to see where Bowsers minions are hiding. Or maybe King Boo Assassins Creed.
I feel like having King Boo be an Assassin would be a cheat of sorts. considering he can go completely invisible

As someone who played football matches on a freezing pitch with the overly enthusiastic parents on the sidelines when I was a kid, that football-parent Bowser at 1:36 made me laugh probably more than it should have 😆

I remember it as well. When I replayed Mario Sunshine a year ago, I realized the trick to making it easy (well, a lot easier; I still nearly ran out of health): the manta can only be over objects; it cannot be underneath them. Have Mario stand underneath any roof/ceiling/tree and it can't touch Mario.
Why I have nostalgia for that horrid game I'll never know.

@@abloogywoogywoo Probably because Mario Sunshine was a good game that was an unfortunate victim of rush (it and Wind Waker alike due to Nintendo having needed to get new Mario & Zelda titles onto the GameCube as soon as possible due to the GameCube's disappointing sales numbers).
I always just hovered like crazy, the one i got flashbacks is the lava goo and i only beat it cuz i saw how if you dunk in the river, it will make enough of a path to cheese and recover FLUDD.

@@stigrabbid589 It's gonna happen. Ubisoft released a DLC teaser before the game even came out confirming Rayman as a playable DLC character.
I will always be thankful to the series that gave Princess Peach what is essentially a shotgun.

Game of the year material
A small, mildly ashamed part of me unironically thinks it's a cool name, and I know exactly how that sounds. It really does just speak to the edgy teen boi in me in the most direct, simplest fashion possible.
There is also FFIV Edge, which despite is name is more of a typical anime character.
I saw that Mean Girls reference! I know it means that Yahtzee liked another mainstream thing! Looks like it's even longer in the Wheelie Bin of Shame for Yahtzee!

I think the best praise praise for Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope's humor is that it seems to have been an inspiring muse for Yahtzee. I was laughing non-stop throughout this ZP, at the one-liners, the captions, the visual jokes, all of it. Maybe a goofy and positive bent is just a nice change of pace from Yahtzee's usual dourness, but I get the feeling he just really enjoyed putting this video together.
I'll definitely pick this up on the Switch at some point.
I love that you portrayed Luigi as a trigger-happy psychopath and continued the bit throughout the entire video. Good stuff.

If it makes you feel any better, I have seen little evidence that Ubisoft Milan who have handled these games have been involved in any of the outed problems, so publisher issue aside the game seems to have been made by a developer team on the up-and-up at least.

You had me at the AI support character and ship AI getting catty with one another.
I’ve found the first one to be much more entertaining and thought out than the sequel. Precisely because the “free” movement is so clunky and wishy-washy now. You can never tell how far you can really go, unless you commit to the action - you can’t “undo” dashes and team jumps, you can’t see the hit chance from your destination unless you get there, etc. The style change and the black-loading-screen-arenas with respawning random encounters in the overworld are just adding salt to injury. The jokes and dialogue seem way more cringey as well - I mean do you remember the Phantom of the Opera scene from the first one? Nothing like that in the sequel (yet, I’m in the second world and have a strong desire to skip every cutscene)
I'm glad we finally got the sequel we all wanted, needed, and deserved.

Also happy Mario and Rabbids got a sequel. Less "eureka!" out-of-nowhere surprising answer to a question never asked, more polished deep dive in the questions that answer had inspired. Arguably the best we could have hoped for, and not in a belittling way.

The Mario RPG games (including the paper series) have always had good comedic writing. I guess the writers get to finally do something and let their creative energy flourish before everyone is a silent character again.
Yahtzee having children has certainly softened his outlook, ESPECIALLY with this one, lol. Check the tone of the first rabidds vid of his, to this one. Happens to the best of us, ol' boy!
The biggest improvement in the game for me was the pacing. Most non boss battles go by very quick so even if you're trying to do all the sidequests it never feels as grindy as the first game. My only gripe is that it still doesn't tell you what reinforcements are about to spawn. I like that they come out of portals instead of emerging from underground (and how you can sometimes target and kill them to prevent additional spawns) but sometimes you expect a shooty boy and you get multiple spawns of goomba groups who proceed to stampede into the nearest party member. So if a portal opens that you can't destroy the only way to really be safe is to move as far away from it as possible.
It's weird that the portals don't give you that info, especially since I remember the first game telling you what types of enemies are spawning through the tacticam. I feel like this game withholds a lot of info from the player compared to the first game, like it doesn't take drop down ledges or pipes into account when showing you enemy movement, and it never tells you what the elemental effects actually do until it finally gives you the tutorial on it. Like I had to look up what shock and ooze actually did because it wasn't all that clear in game, and even then it took me a while to realize the ooze effect spreads to others by touch.
Honestly, I liked it. It's a little annoying yeah, but it adds a bit of surprise and challenge to a game that's otherwise way easier than the first.

I can totally see Bowser being the football dad for his kids (Bowser Jr. and the Kooplings, unless the later group was retconned).
That last slide before the credits is killing me. I love it.
Every slightly different title Yatz gave got me. "Mario and Rabbids Farts a' plenty" legit made me laugh out loud at work. So good.
I think of this less as a mainstream thing and more like a very niche mashup, similar to that Ninja Turtles vs Batman movie. It's a combo that seems like it only makes sense on a spreadsheet superficial way (two sets of bouncy platformer characters) ends up sounding and looking very stupid, but still somehow just kinda works.
You really didn't care at all for the Skill Tree updates? I loved making Rabbid Mario even more broken and unlocking the Stomp for Mario. I'm glade you kinda liked it though.
Does this mean Mario and Rayman exist in the same universe or have the proto-Minions been divorced from that part of the deal?
This game is getting Rayman DLC...that doesn't actually feature Mario. So yes but also no.

This game is like 6 times easier then the first game. Though it didn't matter to me because the combat and general gameplay is really fun.

on the subject of tired schtick omg yahtzee blind eyes all other companies to pick on mario as a tired ip. i mean, seriously, what should nintendo do, just axe their mascot and plop down a new one outta nowhere? they're in it for money, always have been, and have been re-using mario since 1981 so get over it
5:23 while Kids can be stupid, generally it's better to treat them as smart but naieve, they can take sometime to understand a joke, but once they get it they feel like gods, continuing when they get older since Kids media should inclued adults aswell as kids because those kids grow up.
Anyway I feel the game is missing in the story mattering department, like character interactions in combat feel non existent(same goes for the first game), combat is flexiable though a bit generic in enemy useage, I miss when enemies had intros to show you a new threat to deal with, the same goes with bosses.
Some personality was added, and some removed. Little things that would've made the game Great.

No. It’s clear him and Peach are happy when off the clock. Normal Mario games are created to pay the bills. Kind of like an overcomplicated film.

As a lover of the squad tactics genre, I absolutely adored the first M+R game. So glad to see it didn't suffer from sequelitis.

I fully agree with the menu system being not well put together. For me the biggest problem is music and idle animations when selecting characters unlike the last game where they had a intro animation when selecting them. But the one thing I don't get is why they got rid of the power orb system to purchase skills the further you progress through the story. It's like they were going for the XP progression in that who you had on the field would only get XP but they decided to just make it so everyone gets XP but not bother to just make it a single bar instead of showing 8 XP bars go up at the end of a battle.

I'm reminded of when a friend was playing through a PS 3 or 4 rpg (turned out to be 'Star Ocean: The Last Hope') and, as we are want to do, I started riffing on the dialogue in whatever scene was in progress... only to be stopped breathless with laughter when the name *Edge Maverick* popped up for one of the characters... Really? Just... Really?

For second there I misread things and thought the SNES _Super Mario RPG_ was on the "less good" side and got surprisingly offended at s difference of (wrong) opinion for once. Whew. Shame we'll still likely never get sequel, though maybe that's for the best with the current Square Enix. I wouldn't trust them to make it good given Yoshi P has other priorities, especially if they let Nomura anywhere near the writing. Ugh.
