This is an odd tangent, but making a hardened criminal pay into a swear jar would be really quite impressive, it might even be downright intimidating.

Ooo, steal this plot. The superhero is a teacher from a poorly managed part of the city and every swearing villain is forced to put their money into the jar that will be used to fund solving the smaller problem of the city. And the main antagonist, a billionaire who people think never swear because he's upper class, but actually because he hate the idea of paying money to the jar.
Also it'd be fun if the superhero is a badass Mary Poppins type kindergarten teacher.

having giant WHAM and POW popups to act like stylised hit indicators would be fun, theres a lot you could do with the presentation of a game like that

I love seeing Cobblepot being represented as an actual literal penguin in a tophat reading a newspaper.
That bit about Nightwing making “non-lethal fire with bat-science” did give me a revelation of sorts: Nightwing has sticks with electricity and all that. This means there is a non-zero chance that he has accidentally killed a crook/robber/older weirdo with a weak heart/pacemaker.
Every playable character murders people in GK anyway. There's a stealth ledge takedown that can just throw people off a 4 story building. No rope or any sort of lip service paid to their potential survival. They just drop like a sack of shit.
I mean, I doubt Two-Face gave his underlings the health insurance necessary to get a pacemaker installed in the first place

One of the undervalued aspects of the Arkham series is the Batman: The Animated Series voice cast reprising many of their roles. It gave so much life to those characters, and their absence is easy to feel.
Undervalued? It was one of the main things I'd hear being praised whenever someone was discussing the games.
People with an accomplished career of voice acting and dramatic roles (Kevin Conroy was in the famous Juilliard school and then joined theater before becoming the Bat) vs... Who are these actors again?
Honestly, it's not really the actors' fault these guys didn't leave a great impression. I think they just have terrible voice direction and an even worse script to work with.
Ewan MacGregor is remembered as Obi-Wan Kenobi, but he had weak lines in the old Star Wars movies to say.
@@Montesama314 I mean, Elias Toufexis is The Penguin in this, that’s the guy who voiced Adam Jensen, the protagonist of new Deus Ex games and a whole bunch of other shows and games. That being said, I kinda didn’t like how he voiced Oswald, it didn’t really feel like his voice matched the character’s energy. Oh, and the VA who voiced Harley also has a bunch of credits to her name. Other than that, yeah, they really did save a bunch of money by not bringing many good VA’s for this whole thing, huh?
If you check their profiles pretty much all of them are new to voice-acting, the VA who voiced Batgirl has the most credits out of all the protagonists but only has credits for the Barbie and Monster High animated TV series. The guy who voiced Batman has nothing, the guy who voiced freaking Alfred only had a secondary role in an animated tv show before. Same with Freeze. No disrespect to those guys for taking the gig, but how the fuck do you go from Conroy and Hamill to this.
Watch a video on the time trial races in this game. That's all you need to see for how poorly the voice actors were being used.

i could go on but lets face it as many of theses kinds of games as there are not one of them is worth playing by anyone other than a fanboy. hell id say warframe is the only one thats worth playing if u can get into it but i can understand why most people eather give up or dont even try it fact is that games new player experiance is awful

Congrats on finally getting "Spectacle Fighter" out there. I've been trying to make it a "thing" in my own circles for years
Kinda weird, this is actually an old term for the genre that’s going out. Used to be those games were called button mashers, then in the early 2010’s they were called spectacle fighters, now it seems like people think that’s offensive like “button mashers” was and they’re pushing to call them character fighters.
Personally I’ve always liked “spectacle fighter” even if it does sound less skill based than “character fighter,” but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s like a decade old term now lol.

Just wanna add, I know that *we* the Yahtzee watching public used it, but the industry at large shilly-shallied around with varying flavors of "action-adventure" for forever.
Its nice to see the term officially endorsed via steam, especially when "Character Action" or "Character Fighter" seemed to be the finalbresting place for industry opinion on this. Even though its a bad name in every possible respect
More publishers need to realize a lot of players don't want to grind the same gameplay for months till end. Most of us already have a job.
If the game is made to be a farmer, like Warframe or Destiny 2, that's already better since it's advertised as such
But, how will we get you to Engage with our Product as a Lifestyle Brand, so you will make in-game Purchases at our Games As A Service Cash Shop? Surely you don't expect us to create a game 40+ hours of unique content, when we can just recycle the same crap!

watched streamers get paid to play it and it's the first time i've legitimately thought a game to be "soulless". it was easy to imagine how create-by-committee the entire project was.
You can make the same argument about the new GoW, but we can't say nothing about that right? Almost like these youtubers are just seeking attention, play what interests you, end of story.
Every big budget game is soulless corporate product, it's just that some hide it better. It doesn't mean that people working on bad games aren't passionate or that management teams behind good games care about anything more than profit.
@@maweitao Well all big games are but it's often about the Dev and how much they care about the product, I've seen some truly fantastic games but more often they are indie devs that just wanna see their dream game made.
If you guys want a game with some soul I recommend frostpunk, pathologic 2, or multiverses. Yes some are old, and multiverses is a clone but they are made by people that care. And that should amount to something

The best part is that in the post zp stream, yhatzee learns it's not a live service game at all. It's simply that bland and uninspired
Wait, it's not? Man, I completely lost interest in this game because early development made it look like a live service game. Just makes it all the more depressing that' it's not a boring, soulless game because they thought they could milk the players through a live service model, but rather because they just thought that style of gameplay is what people actually want.

It still feels like one and tbh i actuly think it was going to be one at one point but probaly when it got delayed that was them changeing it when they sore how bad the avengers game turned out.

Making villains put money in a swear jar would be such a comedic power move I wish would find its way into mainline titles.
Much as I love Batman, I gotta give Yahtzee credit for that opening description. "Dude with infinite money who's never wrong, with all the warmth and complexity of a potato in a sock" is a decent way to describe some of the more annoying "realistic" versions they've made of Batman.
That was one of the cool things about the original comic storyline, in hindsight: it started with Batman being very wrong. He investigated the Court while he was a child, and by "investigated" I mean he snuck into a disused attic he believed was their headquarters and got stuck there. Based on that rigorous "investigation" he concluded that the Court was a myth, and he held onto that belief for decades and was reluctant to give it up even after the Talons started trying to kill him.
@Douglas Babb Batman has always worked best in his own universe. When you bring him into the Justice League or whatever he has to to become a hyper competent godlike tactician or there’s literally no reason for him to be there cause he’s just a human in a goofy costume. I liked his depiction in the Batman alot; he fucks pretty much everything up, fails to save the city and has to actually learn and grow from his failures.

Honestly my favorite versions of Batman are always the ones where’s he is still incredibly skilled but by that same measure he’s also a dick that self-sabotaged all of his personal relationships either due to his obsession with crime-fighting or his arrogance, like the later half of the DCAU Batman. Sure it’s not the most flattering of character traits or the most inspirational/heroic but it’s way more interesting and human to me than cold robot Batman that’s always right, can do anything, is a god in a human form, etc. etc. Like people dunk on Superman but at least he has fucking emotions.

People go on about how Batman is better because he fights crime as a “normal human”, yeah a normal human with infinite money/resources, the most advanced technology possible, and physical abilities that really stretch the bounds of normal.
I get the feeling that, in the original meeting someone said, "lets make it souls-like" and the mouth breather in charge thought he said "Lets make it soul-less". Easy mistake to make.

1:42 Also for some reason Robin is Tim Drake instead of Damian Wayne, even though by this point Damian has been firmly established in extended media as the de facto Robin with Tim being Ex-Robin the Second.
In your defence, Tim Drake going by 'Red Robin' for at least a good while (for all I know, he still does), isn't exactly a massive rebranding exercise so a bit of confusion is probably to be expected.
I personally think the AAA industry will start using more of Yahtzee's terminology soon. After all, they love to over state the quality of their products.

Maybe if more indie studios start doing the New Blood thing of putting the most outrageous quotes from -Civvie 11- TH-cam reviews in their game's description page on Steam, then AAA might pick up on it and start putting up Yhatzee quotes in marketing material unironically.

@@RacingSnails64 One of the few things Origins did better than the Arkham games made by Rocksteady it's the boss fights (the only decent one was Mr Freeze from Arkham City, everything else was subpar and underwhelming). I am so angry how Rocksteady did Deathstroke dirty in Arkham Knight, i can't believe Origins did it far better with their villains when you actually fight them.

The idea of Batman (Adam West in particular) beating up the ever living shit out of a dude till they put a coin in the swear jar is something I would pay money to see
About that last credits one-liner- in actual proper Final Fantasy, specifically, FFV, we actually see the party try that. One of your party members dies soloing the big bad like a goddamn legend, fighting well past the point of hitting zero HP. The rest of the party tries desperately to revive him with everything they have after the fight, but nothing works, because he's just too dead. It's a surprisingly heartfelt sequence for a game that's overall a lot more on the deliberately silly side of things.
Well shit. I was looking forward to an Arkham-style game in which you get to see and play as a few members of the rest of the family, considering they're easily the best part of Batman related media (and it's a damn shame we never got to see them and bats together because they give infinitely more depth to HIS character by proxy because that's how paragons WORK but I digress) but I guess it was not to be. Ah well.
Wayne Family Adventures, for example, is the best Batman Comic in ages for exactly this reason.
I had fun with it, but in large part because I'm a fanboy for the Robins. It's definitely a solid 5/10 game.
On the bright side, we still have Arkham Knight mods that let you play as Batgirl, Red Hood, Nightwing and Robin in that open world!

I think Lyle in his latest episode came up with the perfect name for "Live Service" games during the intro spoofing Halloween scary stories: Werejobs.
Funnily enough, I am in the midst of playing Arkham Origins. In it, the Penguin makes you piss off by locking himself behind an impenetrable door with two ladies who are way out of his league. I tried to linger outside the door to hear what they were up to, but after 20 minutes all I heard was the penguin repeating lines for me to go away.
As fun as it was to give him performance anxiety, I eventually acquiesced.
I was calling them spectacle fighters before I started watching ZP (heard it from my brother who watched ZP and played a lot of DMC) so it makes sense that the term would become standard. Everyone I know uses the term and I don't think half of them even know about the show. Good term is good :3

Glad to see “Spectacle Fighter” catch on, as it’s a really good descriptor. I hope the next nickname for a game genre to do so is “Mud Genre” for Obligatory Sandbox/Survival Crafting games.
Mr. Freeze was in it. I really enjoyed his like 6 missions also clayface was in it again liked his missions. And I teared up a couple times playing this.
It pleases me that I wasn't alone in trying to read that 1 second message at the 1.12 mark.

I was so excited for a bat family story, sad they tried to make it live service and rush it for holidays a year before Suicide Squad eclipsed it. This game had potential and it seems someone decided to put their manpower behind cosmetics when they could make more money off of Arkham City but fun.
The random dialog between coop partners is apparently really good, and you can tell the writers were fans of the comics

It's like the developers looked at that train wreck that was the Avengers game and thought "hot damn thats an amazing idea let's copy it".
The irony is that the theory going round is this game likely was meant to be a live service game like the avengers, but after that game flopped they got cold feat and just retooled it into this boring mess
Well, Avengers made it to the top of the year-end bland list. I suspect a similar fate for Gotham Knights.
it was topping best seller charts for weeks and presumably made a ton of money, why wouldn't they imitate it? because it's a bad game? who cares
I like how Yahtzee's new intro music is so 2019-2022 but his original intro music after is still back in 2009.
Arkham Asylum came out at a time where superhero video games were basically considered discount bin shlock. There was some decent gems but nothing groundbreaking outside small victories.
But then a Batman movie tie in game was cancelled and the Batman IP got passed around and threw it at a small but talented studio. A lot of budget and pre production was already set so may as well still make a game.
So Eidos and Warner basically just let Rocksteady do what they want; since the game was basically budgeted out already. And Rocksteady were eager to do it so it wasn't a huge financial cost.
This was also before super hero movies took over the world, it wasn't very mainstream yet to put superheroes in everything. I don't think a lot of execs really knew how groundbreaking it be.
So Rocksteady basically had a golden ticket. They had little public expectations to live up to and a freedom to do what they wanted since there was no set framework by publisher or fan. A mid tier release would have probably been fine for them.
And Rocksteady could have released something half assed and it would have done decently just with everything involved (esp getting the beloved Batman TAS talent on it, which also helped marketing).
But also, there was nothing to lose by actually trying; not as many execs telling them to do or not do a thing bc of this or that market.
They took the challenge and created arguably the first real superhero game. Spiderman 2 may have created the first one that had semblances of feeling like the hero but The Arkham Games had it in every aspect. It wasn't just in one mechanic it was built into the foundation of its design.
Now flash forward to 2022. The Arkham games have made superhero games to be top tier. Marvel is basically synonymous with media entertainment and it's been proven you can basically put these characters on anything and it'll do decently enough.
There is no heart to it anymore and there may never be. There isn't a small passionate team showing homage to a character and world they love. It's just Superhero Brand Product™️. Even the good ones are basically built off the Arkham games.
Publishers do not want them to try new things bc it's risky. If it's too out there it may off put people; bc they're afraid of lost sales than risking better ones.
So better making a product that's an homage to something better but is actually just like every other game than try to reinvent the wheel when dealing with a popular IP
Even the Spiderman games, which are really great, are using huge cheat sheets from Arkham, Spiderman 2, and open world games in general. They're just the most polished they could be in their unoriginality.
No way they'd let Insomniac try to reinvent web swinging in a way that not everyone can enjoy it right away for instance. They even changed a more comic looking Peter to look more like Tom Holland to be more like the movies.
And when it is truly bad, you'll still get defenders of this kind of trash. Even if it literally tells you to go screw yourself, bc people can't help themselves. It's really sad.

Funny you mention Penny Plunderer. He was never mentioned in any of the Arkham games but actually *does* get an easter egg in GK, oddly enough.

Would love to see a review of Signalis. I feel like it would be right up Yahtzee’s alley. Plus I just always want to know what he thinks about indie games doing cool stuff in the survival horror genre. Signalis is awesome and deserves more attention.
I'm a fan of all archaeological strata of ZP, but something about the comedic timing of this episode in particular clicks even better.

Oh yesssss!!! A rare sighting of the elusive but hilarious "spunkgargleweewee"!! I remember nearly spraying cola out of my nose the first time I heard Yahtzee say this back in 2012. I think it was in the Medal of Honor: Warfighter Zero Punctuation (Oh my gawd, have I been following every single ZP for the past 10+ year? That says something about the quality of ZP or something about my inability to show personal growth... both? lol). Yahtzee uses "spunkgargleweewee" sparingly, and so it never loses its impact and kills me every time ☠☠☠. Well done, good sir... well done indeed.
Yahtzee really went all In on this game... He ran it raw. It was a beautiful thing to see.
I'm a massive fan of the bat sidekicks, I think there have been wonderful takes on them, especially nightwing, but even the token joke about nightwing's arse felt hollow.
