You need to take a regular reading of the water quality its producing. Some people change it when it turns to 001 PPM others say that they wait until it gets to 005 PPM. If it starts to get much higher then that it can start ti leave spotting on the glass
Recommend connecting an in line tds meter like the hm digital ec2. That way you can monitor the water purity level in and out of the di vessel. Then you know when you need to change the resin. I used John guest 1/2 in to 1/4 in tee for the probes and 1/2 in to 3/4 in hozelock connections with 1/2 in tubing .
You di realize a water softner DOES not remove TDS lol seriously ?? It removes calcium magnesium and some iron.. Only way to remove TDS is a RO or RO DI unit. Resin lasts for 15-20+ years... It doesnt need changed casually like carbon every 6 months.. lol
I shine a light through the bottle and use a marker to set the original level before I empty it. The manufacturer does want room for the resins to liquefy and move about under pressure.
Tip: the resin will expand over time, filling the reservoir this full can cause issues. The Mfg will have a rec. amount to add, usually around 3/4 full.
Hi Dave, just setting up a van so a complete newbie. I just filled up a 6litre resin vessel, and the ppm level stayed exactly the same, around 87ppm. Put it through a 2litre Unger hydro pro and it came out 0ppm. Any ideas why the bigger vessel isn’t doing its job?? Cheers Jay
@@squeakycleandave1 thanks for reply dave. It was a brand new bag but seemed damp, but ive never had any before so wasnt sure. Like i say, through the 2litre unger unit it came down to zero. No worries, cheers again for reply.

Hi Dave, great video. Just a quick question I watched another video that said to only fill the DI vessel ¾ full to leave room for water at the top. Is there any difference in doing this? Cheers
Kenzor I’ve heard that you are supposed to leave a gape to allow for expansion but I’ve never had any problems. I’ve been doing it this was for the last 12 years and it’s always worked for me. I may have been doing wrong all this time😁
This is not the way you do it. about 3/4 full is correct so the media has room to lift during a backwash. I love the Do it yourself guys.. In all fairness he has just a flow through valve. not a backwashing valve. but still. you need to rinse the new media.
Hi Dave. Love your channel Bro. Would it affect the DI vessel if I have a pressure washer running in the van with the door open? Also would it affect the quality of the resin?
Hi Greg. As long as you are using the pressure washer separately and its not going through the resin I don't see why it would make any difference as the DI bottle is a sealed unit.
@@squeakycleandave1 Thanks Dave... I think because it looks like a pressurised oxygen cylinder I always think its gonna blow up with the heat produced by the gx390 🤣🤣👀🙄
Most guides i have seen say you should only fill the bottle 3 quarters up with resin so the riser can sit comfortably in there. Does your method allow the resin to last longer ?
NorthernSmog it’s just normally the way I’ve done it. Never had a problem with it being to full as it seems to drop down a bit when it fills up with water. Hi Dave You mention using a booster pump after the RO, pushing water through the DI, is this necessary? Does this improve the polished water? Also are you still using the Tulsion 115mb? Have you tried any other DI resin? Regards Adam
A Adams Hi Adam. I use the booster pump before the RO to make sure the water pressure is correct for the membrane. I have used other resin in the past but in my opinion I do find Tulson the best but I am always open to recommendations 👍
Squeaky Clean Dave hi, thanks for the reply, I also use tulsion 115mb, however was considering trying either the Unger resin or the unheard of Cedelite mixed bed resin as an alternative and to compare to the Tulsion?
Mack The Gardener one bottle will clean the water but it’s not always the best way to do it and can be expensive. There are a few things to take into consideration 1) what is the water quality you want to filter 2)How much water do you need. 3) are you paying for the water you are filtering 4) how much space you have. 5) how much you have to spend on a filter system. You do know that you are supposed to measure the resin? The DI bottle is not supposed to be clear full. Why? you may ask. The first step of the regeneration cycle is the backflush. Water is sent to the bottom of the DI tank to fluff it up, or de-compact it, to ensure that the brine water that strips the minerals from the resin contacts all of the resin. Many DI tanks have a marking or label telling how many cubic centimeters or cubic liters are required. In the USA it would be cubic ft.

When your water softener no longer generate soft water or at best 10 years for well water or 15 years for city water.
Get yourself a TDS meter and test the output of your tank before every use. Its very easy and fast!

When you empty the old resin out it comes straight out.
