I think it’s probably an old name that stuck…back from when the US territory did not extend all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The Midwest is literally in the middle…not the east coast, not the south, not the north. During pioneer times we were just the “west”, but once the US territories expanded we were “mid(dle)” west.
My friend Dave is trying to flee the sh!t hole that is NYC to CR. I keep trying to get him to leave the Demons of the Democratic Party, become a Conservative, God, Love Family, Country, and Iowa is what I keep telling him.
