I wonder if anyone realizes the line: "Please don't go,I'll eat you whole.I love you so,I love you so" actually comes from the book Where The Wild Things Are.
the “i’ll eat you whole” part is (if i remember correctly) about how he loves her so much that he’s willing to eat her to “be with her” if she decides to go (aka leave him)

That "please break my heart" line gets me so much, idk if it's entirely applicable to what the story of the music video is, but it puts this picture in my head of someone who had just killed someone they felt love for and the inability to take something like that back. Where you wish so much to bring them back you would give anything, even the very relationship you killed them over. "Please don't be dead, you can break my heart instead, just please don't be dead" is all that rings in my mind.
This video is brilliant, at first you think he's an abusive boyfriend or something, then you think she's trying to save herself and her friend because it looks like he's tied her up in the closet but then it's revealed that he's just come home to find his wife tied up in the closet and his ex is trying to kill both of them so he's only acting in self defense. Brilliant.
For those who didn't notice.. I'll tell you in reverse : A man comes home and finds his wife/girlfriend in a closet up. She gives him a sign that someone stands behind him and there she is. His ex ig. She attacks him (maybe for leaving him I think) and fight. It would explain the phrases "Please don't go... I love you so". At the end he kills her with a brick and feels regret. Also those phrases turn up. That's my look at the video :)
@@MrCScottie Usually married couples wear rings or are shown like that and it also would make more sense if the tied up woman was the wife instead of the other woman. That's pretty much how I see it

Seriously, not enough is mentioned about how incredibly well shot and well done this video is. The colour palette, the shots, the pacing, the acting it's just all so masterfully put together. Hats off to Ellis Bahl! :)
It’s weird to come back and see people commenting that they knew this song because of tik tok. I’m glad to find this song years ago by sheer Boredom. But in the end it doesn’t matter where you come from. We all like this song and that should be it.
A few years ago, the drummer (Thom Green) visited my school and talked about playing drums while being deaf, and he was the reason I got into music and drumming
The summer this came out we also got Lorde "Royals", Imagine Dragons "Radioactive", Gotye "Somebody that I used to know", grouplove's "Ways to Go" and Bastille "Pompeii". Fun summer to DJ!
I think that's atleast part of the point filming it like this. Like without the context your conclusions might be unfounded. I mean the most typical reaction would be that he's in the wrong because she's a woman and you should take almost anything they do to you, almost, because when you find out that she's some jealous outsider breaking in to murder you and your girlfriend/wife or something like that it should cause people to think she's in the wrong.
@@DajuOnTH-cam although the meaning of the song is different, shows abusive relationship where she wants to leave him but he cant take it so he drowns her with "soggy clothes and breezeblocks" is she a mistress? or wants her freedom?
I must be the youngest Alt J fan. I'm 14 (turning 15 March 28th) and from the US. I found this song first from a Spotify playlist, and then found Get Better. I love Get Better so much it helps me cope with my struggles and the one line "I'll start the day with tiramisu, raise a spoon to front line workers." Reminds me that I'm working hard to become a nurse and contribute something to this world. Thanks for reading my little rant. Remember, you're loved and whatever you're working towards, you're doing great, and you will make it.
@moogogaipan Hmm, I don't know... Having a mother with a drug addiction and being sexually assaulted which happened a week or so before I posted that comment, but most people don't want to hear about that, which is why I didn't put any details.
Hey! I would've thought the same until I saw this comment: we share the same birthdate! I recently found this band and fell in love with their music and often use it to help me deal with struggles that pop up every so often.
Same here. It reminds me of a friend who abandoned me. I sob from just thinking it, this song is that one I listen to when I’m depressed to cry a bit lmao
what’s happening is the woman is the intruder, presumably the ex gf, he had gotten home to see his wife/gf tied up. she screams while the ex tries to kill him. they fight for a bit until he kills her. he was defending himself and his wife/gf. (this video represents that we are quick to judge before knowing the whole story) this is just what i’m going off when i watched it in reversed
Dont think its his Ex. Hubby was having an afair with the woman with the knife and she found out and came to kill him and tied up his wife. based on his reaction at the end (start of the video) hes sat in shame, not running to check his wife is OK or calling the police or ambulace, hes sitting with his head in his hands. cleary a sign of shame. this is a love afair gone wrong.
2:45 is way too powerful narratively, symbolically and emotionally. I can’t describe how everything just falls into place at this very moment. The music the shot , just perfection.
Running through comments I would say that to better understand the story of the video you may need to watch it reversed. Some people even after the end of the video thought the man was the abductor/agitator for various reasons such as his casual attitude and knowing exactly where the woman was tied up; however, if you watch it chronologically you see he walked in casual, tossed his keys on the counter, went to hang up his coat, hears something, drops his coat in a panic as he pulls back the counter to find his wife. The proof that it is his wife is that she is wearing a ring, he is wearing a ring, and the other woman is not (they make a point to show everyone's ring finger). While i would like to defend the guy, they did make a point to show everyone's ring finger. From a filmmaking/storytelling perspective this indicates to me that this was indeed a jilted lover out to make the married man suffer. Pure Theory: (referring to the cast as Husband/Wife/Other Woman. The other woman came to the house for the Husband. Meets the wife and in a jealous fit ties her up, planning to drown the wife in the tub as a suicide. this would leave the man heart broken, and all hers. As the bath is filling the other woman hears the door, and the husband tossing his keys. The other woman grabs a knife, and when she sees the Husband comforting the Wife, the Other Woman goes into a rage. A fight ensues ending when the man finally knocks the other woman out, and into the tub. He sets the breeze block he used on her chest. He weeps knowing this is all his fault as The other woman drowns. The irony is two fold. The Husband likely broke it off with her to save his marriage, and this will ultimately end his marriage. Meanwhile, the other woman was killed in the same manner in which she had planned to murder the wife.
I agree with the theory, but I am just curious about this "other woman". Was she his mistress and was scorned, or just a woman who was obsessed with him and jealous of his wife?
pretty sur that the story is way more straightforward than this. The man comes back home from work, he hears a woman screaming, realizes it's his wife tied up; her wife warns him that there's another person behind him. Then he starts fighting the other woman who surprises him, assuming that the man cheated on his wife with her. She intends to kill him, and he ends up drowning her, I wouldn't say by accident
My dad's ex girlfriend introduced me to this song. I never had a mother so she was my dad's first gf after my mom and I was mega attached and clingy. After they broke up he found a wonderful girl and she was my first mother figure. They had my sister together. I miss her so much. She passed away too young in August 2019 and this song reminds me of simple times when anxiety wasn't in my mind 24\7
this makes me emotional. this is the first alt j song that i had ever heard. im so grateful for this group. they have opened me up to so many more artists and songs (glass animals and marian hill and stateless and max frost and chet faker and milky chance and... etc.) i hope they have done the same for you

If you play it forward. It seems like he comes home from work. He hears a noise and finds his wife tied up with tape over her mouth. The attacker (his ex girlfriend) is behind him holding a knife about to stab him. When he tries to stop her. Then he kills her. Then has regrets. And the lyric please don’t go I love you so is from her the ex girlfriend not wanting to die and telling him he lover her.
I didn’t get an ex-gf vibe from her. I believe that’s the woman he’s cheating on his wife with. She’s become scorned because he obviously won’t leave the wife. You can tell when the husband saves the wife the way she looks at him after he saves her
Why is it the same actress in the closet and outside then? Was he married to the sister? Or did he kidnap the sister and her twin was there to rescue her?

One of the main things that made this music video so great is that you don't know what's going on until the end of it. This causes the viewer to make false assumptions and reconsider what they think at the end. Truly one of my favorite music videos. :3
Hyginx The Wolf Yeah but the end is the beginning.. so realistically.. whatever you think is happening hasn't happened yet. The point of this whole song is the push and pull that passionate relationships are hallmarked by. And fuck is it beautiful.
Hyginx The Wolf I think the visual storytelling matches a lot of the lyrical content very well. It is completely lost when played the other way around. That's the bigger accomplishment.
I have been wondering for four years what that meant and decided it was a metaphor or some shit that abuse or violence or getting attached and becoming a psycho ex gf or whatever this song is about is a breeze in the moment until it hits you like a block once it's all said and done.. alt j is not qs clever as I thought they were. They're just british
I don't get why it goes up and down, the video in the beginning made we think it was his fault and then for the entire video it shows how SHE really was the psycho, the respect should be up for the beginning and then drop the whole time
It reflects how traumatic events work on your mind. If you view this video in reverse (events going the right way) everything goes much quicker and every reaction he had seems logical. But when it’s over, everything plays backwards and starts to seem jumbled (such as in this video) and nothing makes sense. And he, as well as the viewer, wonders why he didn’t do things differently.
Interesting way to view it. I've always taken it for what it was at face, that a dude wouldn't let a girl say no so he killed her. Pretty sure that is the reality, but it's nice to know there are other ways to view it.
Can people stop saying "tiktok is going to ruin the song" or "i've been listening to this for 5 years" or anything along those lines? Like how about we appreciate the song, the band, and that tiktok is sending a wave of fans to this song which will support the artist?? like damn. Do you want a gold star that you heard this when it came out Karen? Why not just enjoy it and see the positives? Edit: Even I've done this before because i had a negative view of tiktok at first (theres a handful of songs i knew before tiktok make them spiral) but then i had to look at it that now people are exploring more music options that tickle their fancy and its making some underrated artist get more of a fan base which is incredible! like freaking Willow Smith - do you know how obsessed with her music i got after i saw the 'wait a minute' trend on tiktok? I'm now a huge fan and have listened to her songs on repeat lol. So like - lets chill please and thank you.
@@poshcatterson1790 The genius part is that playing the video backwards reverses too the expectations of people ; most of viewers will start to think that this is a feminist music video, only to be confronted to their own delusions in the end.

it’s loosely based on the book “Where the Wild Things Are,” in which a little boy travels to the land of the wild things, and the wild things really love him. they love him so much they are willing to harm him to keep him in their land. so this lady loves the guy so much she will do whatever it takes to keep him, even if it means really hurting him.

@@Human-shapedbeing i agree with your mistress correction. but i disagree with your other point. the camera zooming in on both the mans ring and the woman in the bath's ring-less left hand, shows that they had some sort of relationship. the woman in the closet's hand was not acknowledged. However, the man seemed to know the woman because instead of freaking out and calling 911, he tries to console her as if he knows her. this is one of the best made music videos i’ve ever seen. the flip of perspective, from reverse to forward and vise versa, paints such different pictures. phenomenal.
2022 and still a great song. *2023 and still a great song. Also imo songs can get worse with time, or at least they're played less frequently over time. I don't literally mean that the quality of the song is getting worse.
So to anyone who is still confused or is like me and cant tell characters apart, here's what I've pieced together: the lyrics are from the man's point of view, about how he regrets killing her but "has" to. The music video shows that he comes home, and he finds his wife tied up in their closet. (We can assume theyre husband and wife from the first few seconds of the video. Guy has a wedding ring, drowned girl doesn't, and we can probably guess that the tied up girl does.) Crazy stalker/his ex lover tied current lover up and attacks man. (Lyrics refer to attacker as love so we can assume the attacker is his ex.) He bashes stalker/attacker with a cinderblock, then drowns her in the bath, but seems to feel bad about it despite everything that happened (again, lyrics seem to show this.)
Also if you watch the reverse, it's more obvious that the bath was already running- so attacker seems to have already made plans about how to clean evidence and or dispose of victims. Do what you will with this information ^^
I hope who ever made this video got an award. That was heavy. At first you think its domestic abuse. Then mabe some kinda Mr. and Mrs Smith thing. But then ahhh the finale. Good job all around. I love this song.❤❤❤

Ps 9+9=21
Well.. i dont know about self defense.. he chased her through half the building when she was trying to get away, then killed her when she was unarmed.
For those who didn't notice.. I'll tell you in reverse :
A man comes home and finds his wife/girlfriend in a closet up.
But what if the man has an affair and the woman behind him is his actual wife?
@@shasha-gv8gb Both him and the woman who's tied up have rings, so the other woman can't be his wife

I love Get Better so much it helps me cope with my struggles and the one line "I'll start the day with tiramisu, raise a spoon to front line workers." Reminds me that I'm working hard to become a nurse and contribute something to this world. Thanks for reading my little rant.
Tiffany Pincemin an ex lover who was not over with the idea that he was leaving her for His wife imo "Please don't go, i love you so"
dude.....
pretty sur that the story is way more straightforward than this.
Yes, up you go.
My dad's ex girlfriend introduced me to this song. I never had a mother so she was my dad's first gf after my mom and I was mega attached and clingy. The attacker (his ex girlfriend) is behind him holding a knife about to stab him. When he tries to stop her. Then he kills her. Then has regrets. And the lyric please don’t go I love you so is from her the ex girlfriend not wanting to die and telling him he lover her.
Thanks
How the actual fuck did you price this shit together
I didn’t get an ex-gf vibe from her. I believe that’s the woman he’s cheating on his wife with. She’s become scorned because he obviously won’t leave the wife. You can tell when the husband saves the wife the way she looks at him after he saves her

One of the main things that made this music video so great is that you don't know what's going on until the end of it. This causes the viewer to make false assumptions and reconsider what they think at the end. Truly one of my favorite music videos. :3
Hyginx The Wolf plus, the shutting of the door adds so much to the cinematography.
Fernando Gracia You were right. Thanks for the recommendation.
Can you please tell me the story!? I get confused on who's hitting who and I get lost.... :-/

It reflects how traumatic events work on your mind. If you view this video in reverse (events going the right way) everything goes much quicker and every reaction he had seems logical. But when it’s over, everything plays backwards and starts to seem jumbled (such as in this video) and nothing makes sense. And he, as well as the viewer, wonders why he didn’t do things differently.
thats a really nice interpretation
So true, what a great explanation.
Interesting way to view it. I've always taken it for what it was at face, that a dude wouldn't let a girl say no so he killed her. Pretty sure that is the reality, but it's nice to know there are other ways to view it.
Also, to backup this view I have, look at almost any of their other hits. Catchy as fuck but fucking horrid messages.

this is one of the best made music videos i’ve ever seen. the flip of perspective, from reverse to forward and vise versa, paints such different pictures. phenomenal.
2022 and still a great song.
*2023 and still a great song.
Also imo songs can get worse with time, or at least they're played less frequently over time. I don't literally mean that the quality of the song is getting worse.
I'm here for it👌
Agreed
Hell yeah
I’m here in 2016
Yep
2:08 this part always gives me chills

This song just popped out of my recommendation.
AND I AM HAPPY IT DOES
So to anyone who is still confused or is like me and cant tell characters apart, here's what I've pieced together: the lyrics are from the man's point of view, about how he regrets killing her but "has" to.
@@tsuki4195 thanks
3:12 you can see the ring on the wife's finger 😊
well now the whole "Breezeblocks" makes sense, its what a cinderblock is apparently called sometimes
If u want just listen to the song on Spotify and it tells u the background info
For a video that is in reverse it has quite a bit of twists and turns.
Have you seen Nolan's Memento?
Jan Staněk Yes, I have. I love that too.
Metaphysical Resonance Yall should watch Don't sing by Data
+1 for Data - Don't Sing
yes we worked very hard on this thank you so much for ongoing love!
I hope who ever made this video got an award. That was heavy. At first you think its domestic abuse. Then mabe some kinda Mr. and Mrs Smith thing. But then ahhh the finale. Good job all around. I love this song.❤❤❤
She may contain
the urge to run away
But hold her down
with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
Citrezene
your fever’s gripped me again
Never kisses
All you ever send
are fullstops
Do you know
where the wild things go
They go along to take your honey
Break down now weep build up breakfast now
Let’s eat my love my love love love
Muscle to muscle and toe to toe
The fear has gripped me but here I go
My heart sinks as I jump up
Your hand grips hand
as my eyes shut
Do you know
where the wild things go
They go along to take your honey
Break down now weep build up breakfast now
Let’s eat my love my love love love
She bruises coughs
she splutters pistol shots
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
She’s morphine queen of my vaccine
My love my love love love
Muscle to muscle and toe to toe
The fear has gripped me but here I go
My heart sinks as I jump up
Your hand grips hand
as my eyes shut
She may contain
the urge to runaway
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
Germaline disinfect the scene
My love my love love love
But please don’t go
I love you so my lovely
Please don’t go, please don’t go,
I love you so, I love you so
Please don’t go, please don’t go,
I love you so, I love you so
Please break my heart
[2x]
Please don’t go, I’ll eat you whole
I love you so, I love you so, I love you so

Was hoping one of you would put the lyrics here
I'll be praying for you 🙏❤️
You know it's a good ass music video when people are still questioning it four years later.
HAHAHAHAHAH YEAH BAD!

Friend of theirs was in an abusive relationship. They've written quite a lot of songs about her its sweet.
And this is not the case
No, it's just a confusing one
who else thinks this song sounds kinda comforting and homey?
Ikr
Absolutely
As a kid with English not being my first language, i used to listen to a lot of songs like this that sound really cozy, only to get the lyrics later and realize that i've very often fallen asleep to songs about murder or suicide...
The lyrics come from a children’s book as well
i think that's the point. delusional warmthy love, when what they're saying is "please break my heart, i'll eat you whole"
Man. Years later

Cyan Tranquility now this, is an underrated comment
damn, the fact it’s in reverse makes me think he’s going to get blamed for everything that happened, and at the beginning we were make to think he’s the bad guy, yikes
Uhmmm he is the bad guy. He has one woman in the closet and killes the other one.
@@mihribanII no he isn't?? the woman attacked him first, the video is literally in reverse, shes his stalker??
@@злые-гномы you are right. I know its in reverse. I thought he walked in and had that one woman tied up, but he found her there ofcourse.
@@mihribanII I understand how it can be confusing lol, took me a bit to figure it out also
@@злые-гномы thank you guys for explaining this lmao
Last time I was here the comments were full of people actually talking about alt-J and analysing the video.
I'm glad more people are getting into them but goddamn all these comments are the same and have absolutely no substance. What a damn mess.
Yes, but it's very important for everyone to know that someone you haven't met hasn't been on tiktok or daybreak.
I hate youtube commuinty sm... they always begging for likes. Quating a line and adding lmao or something. Its so annoying, i really miss the old yt. Now its just so toxic

Oh no. I used to listen to this song before I watched the video. Now instead of just chilling to a groovy song, I see this video in my mind every time. x.x
The perks of not having a visual mind (aka as aphantasia), is that this doesnt happen to me haha

When you just wanna throw a brick at a stranger but your wife is tied up and you can't help but moonwalk out of that situation.
Some Guy I just laughed sooo fn hard at this comment thank you
Lmao
This is the best comment i have seen yet. You have blessed my comment section. I thank you for that.
The crazy girlfriend became jealous of the wife and tied her up, to sneak attack kill you with a butcher knife, and your only option was to kill the better piece of ass to save your marriage. Or at least that's what it would be if the video was played in the right direction.
@@zesticide1010 that's kind of the point of the video though, they want you to think twice about what your first interpretation of the video was, and why it was wrong and most assumed it was the guy who was a psycho.
