The problem is that you can get an M1 Air, nicely specced for up to $1000 less than an M2 Air on the Used/refurbished market. Some of the changes on the M2 are nice to have, but none of them are really worth that much of a price difference. In fact, if you spec up an M2 Air to 16Gb and 512 or 1Tb of storage, than you're basically close to the price of a 14" MacBook Pro, which looks similar and is only slightly larger and thicker. But it has better cooling, a better screen, much better sound, more ports, and better performance overall. So if you're a typical user, than a used/refurbished M1 Air is a better choice. And if you're a power user, than the 14" MBP is a better choice. The pricing on the M2 means that there really isn't a good case for buying one.

This is the video I've been waiting for! I got my M1 Air with 8 core gpu/cpu, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD a little over a year ago to replace my 2014 MacBook Pro i7, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. My plan was to keep the Air until the newer 14 inch MacBook Pros were released and trade it in. I have not done anything that has made me want to get rid of the M1 Air. Is there memory swap when doing the ocasional heavy task? Yes. Does it matter? Not really because I rarely do heavy tasks this days. The M1 Air is capable to handle any Lr and Ps work, 4K video edit in Final Cut Pro that I might need to do. I really enjoy the new design of the M2 Air, but I don't think the upgrade is worth it in my use case. I also agree on going refurbished, specially with Apple's own store which gets you a 1 year warranty.

As always, great video! I love how honest you are with your reviews. I've upgraded my parents in 2021 (iPad and Macbook Air), but this year it's time for me. I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro (a fossil, I know, but it's been upgraded to 1TB SSD and 8GB RAM in 2015) so I was waiting patiently for the M1 models, but my jaw dropped when I saw the price of the 14 inch M1! This year's 13 inch M2 was supposed to be The One, but it has that god-awful touch bar, I cannot even look at that thing, I hate it so much! I'm not sold when it comes to the Airs, I use and abuse my computer over 18 hours a day and I feel like a better cooling system is a must. I watched everything you uploaded on the 3 models and all the comparisons, but I would love to see a short video summing up the differences between the Air M2 with the Pros, 13 inch M2 and 14 inch M1 all with the same/similar specs, if it hasn't been suggested before :) Take care, thank you for your help with last year's upgrades!

I can't help but wonder why people working remotely (working being the main word here) use a MacBook Air? Why is a company providing their engineers and office workers that create the products, or support the products with a MacBook Air? Is it because it is "good enough" and to hell with your demands of a better, bigger screen? The MacBook Air is the entry machine and yet people seem to flock to it, complaining about whatever suits them. This is why Chromebooks failed and now that they are starting to build better Chromebooks, now it no longer matters. A battle lost. The M2 MacBook Air is a great machine, I bought one for my daughter as she is mainly writing blogs on it and watches silly stuff. By the way I have started purchasing all my Apple laptops with 16Gb of memory and 512Gb of storage. I find that to be a good configuration.

I would disagree with the sound comment. Listening to these two side by side, the M1 with its up facing speakers sounds richer, less muted, than the rear facing speakers on the M2 at least IMO. In general I think most laptops with up firing speakers sound better than those that fire down or to the back, to me this seems no different. Also the default SSD (256) slowing things down on the M2 requiring (who pays more for less ; ) ) you to upgrade to address the SSD, and you're looking at a $400 difference. That's $1400 for a 14" laptop with 8g ram, the value is gone on the M2. The M2 in the midnight color does look nice.

Personally, I will never understand the emphasis that some consumers place on the color or the "design", a 0.1 lb difference in weight, or a 0.3" difference in screen size. I started paying attention to Macs two years ago when the Mac Air became the gigachad of mobile price-to-performance, and from that perspective (which the video rightly points out is probably not shared by Apple's core demographic) the $200 base price increase and the slower SSD performance _do_ matter.

Hey there, I am stuck between choosing a refurbished M1 with 16gb RAM and 1TB of storage, or spend $200 more and get an M2 with 16gb of RAM and 256gb of storage. I'm quite worried that the battery capacity, while it's guaranteed to be >80%, will severely drop in the next couple of years. What would you do?

M2 is a rip off for most average users, as long as the M1 is around. The camera is not that great (and you can use your phone as a camera in the new OS), screen size difference is negligible, and so is speed differences. I have been using the M1 for the last couple of years, and it's works great. I'm a professor and I teach in Zoom a lot these days. Never has my M1 given me issues, except when I am pushing it to the max. And even then it just gets slightly slower. If I upgrade from this, I'd rather spend that much money on the 14" MBP.

I can get my hands on a brand new Macbook air M1 - the base model (256 SSD & 8gb ram)- for just 919 euros (= 943 $) (reduced price). Normally the base model is around 1029 euros. I want more storage- just to be safe- but then I would have to spent 1300 euros (=1334$). Should I get this model, use an external SSD and deal with the storage it has installed (and the 8GB's of RAM) or spent some more on RAM or storage?
I would describe myself as a standard user: browsing the web, using social media, working for school, watching TH-cam,... but I like to take family pictures and transfer them over to my computer (and eventually transfer them over to an external harddrive).
I don't know what to do because the price is so low at this point and spending almost 400 extra just for some extra space is crazy- BUT I want a computer to last me for years to come and I don't want to care about storage.

Thank you for the kind words. Look, the 14 MacBook Pro with M1 Pro + 32GB is going to be a beast - and is definitely the more powerful machine (better multi-core CPU and better GPU). You'll also have a fan for sustained performance (better display, ports, etc.).
It's a question of value and budget to me - if you have the money and you are using it for work, for top performance is paramount - go 14.
Having said that, you can do what you mentioned with the M2 + 24GB.

ps: iam a psychology student (and graduate in design before that). This base MacBook Air is amazing for everything I throw at it (even design wise). I was trying to justify a pro model, but it would be overkill for me (and for 99% of people).

if Macs could gaming, maybe a pro model could be useful. But as it is, only architecture, coders and REALY heavy users can benefit of the GPU cores of the pro, max and ultra models.

so a 16/256 M1 Air with an external SSD would be better and cheaper than a base M2 Air? Interesting

I like the M2 MBA. Is it really going to be slow when I’ll just be using microsoft word and surfing the web? Or should I grab the M1?

Hi. No, the M2 will not be slow. But the M1 might be a better value if you only need it for Word an the web (and you can find a good deal). Hope that helps.

Windows user here going to try the MBA M1 for the first time. It’s currently on sale through 12/24 at Costco for $799. If you still haven’t got yours, that seems a pretty good deal.

I think you’ll like the next video. Personally, I would get a refurbished M1 Air and upgrade the RAM.
