    the 2010 team was better than 2002. we got lucky to advance from the group in 02.
    edit: we switch to 3-5-2 after the group, we were 4-4-2 for the group games.

    • @StateOfSoccer
      @StateOfSoccer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We barely advanced in 2010. '02 team beat Portugal (pre tournament favorites) & Mexico en route to lost to Germany in the QF. 2010 team had talent but I don't even this they were as talented as the 2006 team.

    While an interesting comparison there are a couple things I'd challenge....
    1) Brooks > Berhaulter. Gregg was consistent, but never played in Champions League.
    2) Look at the age comparison of the 2 squads. The 02 squad was mostly an experienced/finished product, while the 22 squad is extremely young and is still a work in progress. A better comparison will be the 02 squad and the 26 squad....at which time most of the XI will be of similar age.

    • @StateOfSoccer
      @StateOfSoccer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. It was a tough choice and I honestly flopped between the two multiple times. I agree with your assessment but in the late 90s this squad was considered to be a golden generation. In 2002 it was a mixture of young/old players. I also wanted to compare the most successful team vs. 2022 in terms of WC success.

    • @celebrim1
      @celebrim1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Berhalter was also considered a backup. He only played in the 2002 WC because of injuries.

    I suspect this surge of young talent isn't a golden generation so much as it is the new normal. Rather than a freak /random occurrence of soccer talent being simultaneously born- I think it's brought on by the USA finally having some semblance of a development pipeline. 10 years in- we are seeing it just now beginning to bear fruit.

    • @StateOfSoccer
      @StateOfSoccer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I hope from now on it is just a steady wave of talent moving forward.

      @@StateOfSoccer sure seems that way and to be gaining momentum. And its not just more outliers innate talent being discovered- but a noticeable rise in technical ability at a younger age across the board. All good news for US Soccer.

    2002 team got badly beat by Poland. The current team hasn't been beaten that badly, yet.
    Also, the 2002 team required help from So. Korea to even get out of the group stage. The 2022 team is younger, faster, and more experienced at the highest level which is Champions. The 2002 did not beat Mexico 3 times like the 2022 team.

    This guy got really creative to make it look like a good match up. In reality, this isn’t even close. ‘22 barring injury has much better talent than ‘02. Tbh our B/C squad today has much better talent than ‘02 squad.

    • @StateOfSoccer
      @StateOfSoccer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A healthy/mature '22 team is better than '02. I disagree with your last statement about our B/C squad.

    • @celebrim1
      @celebrim1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 2002 squad would eat this young team alive. It wouldn't even be close.
      Now, this 2022 squad matured up in 2026 might be better than the 2002 squad, but the talent on that 2002 squad was real.

    • @quanshi72
      @quanshi72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@celebrim1 lunatic. Nothing supports these statements other than you’re own very wrong opinion. In no universe is the talent of 2002 any where near the TALENT of 2022.

    • @quanshi72
      @quanshi72 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StateOfSoccer talent wise it is better. Maybe not playing together and def not coaching. But Konrad, Clark, Chris richards, Aaronson, the list goes on. The US has NEVER in its HISTORY has a deeper player pool with so much talent. It’s not to disrespect the ‘02 team. They accomplished a lot but what made it so special was how UNDERTALENTED they were compared to other countries. We cannot forget that.

    • @celebrim1
      @celebrim1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@quanshi72 One only need listen to the OP recite some of the accomplishments of the 2002 players to see how dubious your claim is. Right now we have a bunch of young players, many of whom are struggling, and virtually none of which are the star on the team they play for. In 2002 we had a roster of players who were stars in their team and league, who were Captains and leaders on their team.
      The big difference is not necessarily talent, but the fact that these players average under 23 years of age. We are like the third youngest national squad in the world, and by far the youngest in the top 50. But we look like young players out there. We're not ready to compete with the top teams in the world. That squad in 2002 very much was.
      No one on this squad is going to make the impact Donovan had in the 2002 World Cup.

    • @StateOfSoccer
      @StateOfSoccer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Based off of how they are developing id agree. For this comparison I wanted to compare them in present day/even though a lot can change in one year. I think it’s safe to say that this squad is our Golden Generation

    -- The 2022 home kit > the 2002 home kit.
    -- The 2002 away kit > the 2022 away kits. (I don't like either one especially, but the Stadium away kit is horrible. The only thing that could redeem it would be *at least* a quarter-final appearance.)

    Nice way to look at it... BUT the 2002 team was a better squad. Until the 2022 team reaches those accomplishments, then we will have good conversations. Soccer is a team sport and makes for team achievement. We have a good 2022 squad and I will be backing our Red/White/Blue Boys and the whole way...

    This generation won't be done until after the 2030 World Cup. So comparing how they do in 2022 to 2002 wouldn't be proper. Compare what they do after the 2030 World Cup to 2002
