Cygnus X1 is still in my top ten from the entire catalog, as a drummer it’s insane
Back in the day, I worked with a guy who was totally into punk. Had the spiked hair and everything. I brought my boombox into work. I played this song and he’s like whoa that’s awesome!
Exactly. I played this song for a friend who was into metalcore in the mid-2000's and she went, "this is Rush? wow!" She thought Rush was "grand-dad rock". :)

This is epic Rush. Performed brilliantly, on the money. Yes, the fans are most definitely into it, we all were. Rush “Live” nothing quite like them.

The last 2 minutes of this song seems to me to have influenced so many like dream theatre, porcupine tree, uncle, tool and many more I'm sure. The power trio !
Justin, if you ever want to signal to fellow musicians that you are a hardcore Rush fan all you have to do is just play them that opening 5 note bass lick. 😄 But for a guy fighting a cold, Geddy does pretty well with what has to be one of the most insane vocal performances of any Rush song.
That was one heck of a concert! That's a slightly smaller setlist than when I saw them a few months earlier (1977 in NYC. Cheap Trick was the opening band). Watching them do Xanadu and Cygnus was amazing! It was so long ago, i have trouble remember specific moments, but I do remember clearly Xanadu and a few other moments.

You should watch a 1979 Disney movie called: THE BLACK HOLE! This definitely could be the opening theme for that! As a matter of fact the spaceship 🚀 is called THE CYGNUS! Stars: Maximillian Schell, Robert Forster, Anthony Perkins, and Ernest Borgnine!

I think you’re confusing Cygnus X1 with Hemispheres. Cygnus X1 is Book 1 and Hemispheres is Book 2. Book 2 is the 20 min piece that starts the Hemispheres album. Book 1 is the shorter piece that concludes Farewell to Kings. Either way - both are amazing songs.
This and Jacobs Ladder are the 2 most evocative in the catalog
I'm a singer too, though I do not have a range like Geddy's.. and I just feel for him having to go out and hit those high notes night after night..
The blessing/curse of being young and not thinking about that and just going out and doing it.. but Jeez.. that had to be tough.. nice to see that he went with singing the end note and not the blood curdling scream like on the record.. good on him for that.
"Ah, yeah off-beat. Wicked." LOL @ the crowd for clapping on-beat during Geddy's off-beat bass at the beginning. Before Rush, I was listening to pop rock like Journey, Foreigner, etc. I got interested in Rush during Moving Pictures. So when I began listening to their back catalogue in 1981, I'd never heard screaming and rapid double bass strokes and dark walls of sound. It was incredible! Hooked! Decades later, I go to Warped Tour, and every band is screaming and doing fast double bass kick speed.
"Ah yeah off-beat. Wicked." is a reference to a performance by an obscure solo musician; and it would be cool if someone caught the reference immediately without Googling it. haha!
When you consider Xanadu and Cygnus, I think it's pretty clear that Natural Science was ineviatable...
