Hello everyone. Apologies for the false start video yesterday which was intended to sit as a channel intro video for new viewers...but thank you for all the funny comments. Grab a glass of wine for the second part and enjoy the battle.... Experts out there, please be kind commenting on my technique! The great news is that this is all in place and rock solid today. I’m not only amazed by your physical ability doing that on your own but the mental strength in not giving up .. I would have cried into a bottle of Prosecco. Well done 👏 😊
Martijn gets help. He's got volunteers from time to time camping next to his hut and working with him during the day. He keeps the hard physical jobs for these occasions. Well done Richard, I felt very tiered just watching you struggle with this beam. Well done!
Hi @dorityannai7888 . I have a few offering to visit and help so if I can get more organised with the dates I hope to have some come along and join me also.🤞
Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to reply! Having volunteers also means them to enjoy a special experience working with you, enjoying your view, traveling the area, having a nice glass of wine with you at sunset. It is a mutual benefit. It is a huge job you have taken, and a bit lonely one. Enjoy your "journey", I shall continue following :)🍷🌷
I’m in total awe of Martjin and love the cinematography of his vlogs but you are doing great too and I’m so impressed with your solo beam wrangling skills
Well Richard your the only one I watch that makes me cry then laugh. The fact your doing this on your own is amazing, but we've been there, done it, & still doing it at 74 years of age. Keep going, take care, and enjoy your wine, you so deserve it. Hugs ❤️
You’re doing a great job but it looks like you could use an electric chisel hammer to make your life easier chopping the wall. I think a fan facing out the window would have got rid of that dust. Keep up the good work.
@dono9879 Thanks. I did not think of the fan idea - will definately do that next time. The hammer drill has been purchased! The next wall should just drop in seconds.🤞😂
Loving this channel, many many years ago I bought a run down 3 story townhouse in the UK and while still working, I lived in an armchair which was my only piece of furniture and I single handedly sorted it while still working long 12 hour shifts 30 miles away. It was wintertime to start so I had to make the house as cozy as I could, then it was sorting out the front and back gardens, rebuilding and extending the patio which had collapsed, burning off all the rubbish that had been dumped plus the brambles that had taken over everything. It was a very satisfying feeling once it was all done, sitting outside in the evenings watching the sun go down with a glass of red and sparking up the barby, such a magical time.
Richard I feel for you so much putting up that lintel. I know it happened ages ago but I feeling so sorry for you. But I admire your perseverance and not giving in. You will do it I know

Well happy I found your channel, as a similarly aged Brit recently buying property one region over from you, you’re an inspiration. Totally get why you’re doing this, and I’m so impressed with your concern for your neighbours. Italys a country that pays respect with love, I’ve found
Ha, well done Richard. Yes Martijn has become the yardstick for ridiculously impossible jobs! Just a thought, once you get more pally with you neighbour with the excavator, maybe you can call on him for the occasional times when an extra pair of hands would make a big difference. Cheers from Oz🍷
Hi @andie1769 . Dennis has been great. We have slowly builty up a friendship. He has offered to help anytime so we text quote often now. He is a really nice bloke so hopefully he will be ok to come on camera soon so that he can say hello to everyone also! I am not sure he will want to though...
Hi, Great job, tip I was told many years ago when I was an apprentice, sprinkle water on the floor before brushing 🧹 it keeps the dust down, worked for me. Keep up the good work, looking forward to your next video. Cheers 🍷Tony 🇬🇧
Enjoying the Vid. however, I hate telling people what to do but, 2 things to "consider" would be a small jack-hammer & ear-plug to protect your hearing. I do realize "this" was made 4-5 months ago but for future consideration. Cheers. and Good Luck.
Hi @adrianpiek941 . That's ok - thank you - I really appreciate constructive feedback. A jack hammer was purchased recently to help take render off the walls (helluva job!). I am building up my tool collection as I go. 👍
Serious kudos to you for tackling putting in a beam by yourself. I would have been scared just trying to make sure I measured the space correctly before I started knocking out the wall. I also enjoy the skill you have in creating your videos - it's not just ten minutes watching you chisel at bricks. Thank you!
When the beam didn’t fit…I nearly wet myself! 😂😂…because I know I’d probably have done the same. As the old sayings goes…’measure twice..cut once’. Then again, where would the entertainment be if it was all straight forward. Good progress. Keep going!
I was so concious of not cracking that top line of mortar to keep the strength but the slighest bump just kept catching the beam!😂🤦♂️ Lessons for next time...
Watching you with that beam reminds me of trying to hang a panel, on my own, in the wind. I ended up stuck, hands cramping, holding it up and unable to move. I stayed like that for over ten minutes until my father noticed that I wasn't moving lol. 😂👍
Hard work Richard! This episode reminds me of Lee Dorsey's song "Working in the Coal Mine": hammering, lots of dust, supporting beams. I admire your will to persevere.
Thank you @RaisingVoyagers. I have been watching you guys and am picking up many tips! A great project you have going on - amazing work. Cheers to you and your family too!🍷
Well done for getting the support in Richard. You must've been beaming once it was in there, especially as you had to do it all on your own. 💪🏻🍷 Those Portuguese bricks are tough, last week with the fire place and today with the wall.
To date the worst job in our renovation was cutting a doorway in the bricks, thank goodness we had a power saw with a masonry blade (scary as hell beast to use, it took 2 of us to hang onto it & vacuum at the same time) but we needed it due to the brickwork being the only well built part of our house 🤣 and the brick ties were as they should be not very scarce as we thought it would be. Luckily we only needed a thick steel L shaped lintel (and I say that loosely due to cutting it to size also). I wish Lee would’ve let me film it all because the transformation here is amazing and I’m so glad we’ve done 90% of it ourselves. Good job Richard, the struggle is well worth it and you definitely deserve the 🍷. shell 🇦🇺
Hi @One_Crazy_Dog_Mum . I did not realise that there were power saws for this job. I will look at them for the window openings. I have bought a hammer drill, which has saved me hours of chipping away at tiles and solid render!🙌
@@threeacresofmarche it was a power saw with a reversed diamond blade (the blade attached so the teeth are going the other direction) my best friend’s hubby is a carpenter he set it up specifically for masonry but you can do it with any power saw apparently. We had a fan to blow the dust out the door which helped too. 💪🏼 your doing a great job 💖
I wanted to shout advice as you were struggling with the beam.....But in the end you managed. When you come to grout in the ends take some more wall away in the middle then you can hold the beam in place from the centre with some wooden supports. Great job though on your own. Impressed. PS Straight back and lift with the legs...
Good tip at a perfect time @johnpeterdean1653 . I opened up the gap a while ago but left it settle for a while to see if there was any movement. Luckily none! I am ready to do the grouting around it this weekend. Thank you.🙌
Weather looks stunning Rich and well done with the beam its a bugger trying to do it on you're own if you ever need any advice im here enjoy and keep up the good work !
Hi @ronstarius . I did not know that you can get them for brick cutting. I have a few more openings to do so will look into it and invest! Thanks for the tip.🙌
Hey hey, i stumbled across your channel this morning, and have been binge watching you all day. Love your light fresh approach to ytubing and no nonsense delivery. Just a fyi. resting the lintel on tijolo brick isn't ideal as they have little structural integrity.
HI @steveiboy Thanks for watching. I packed up the one side with a more solid base and think it will be ok for the type of beam and load that it is actually taking. I have to put a longer beam in another room so will build that up with sllid brick and pad it on that one. Cheers for the tip.👍
Amazing job you did Richard Hoping you are being careful in all this heavy lifting Hope Dennis can help you with your property but not be very expensive Take care and see you in the next video 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Well done with the beam mate, it did make me laugh a few times as it reminded me of previous renovations ive done here in Stockport (struggling doing two man jobs on my own) 😂 I visited Northern Italy many times years ago & your videos have reminded me of some great trips I had.
Hello Richard The much anticipated next video, but firstly your new intro was delightful, amusing, so charming as you lead us through the archway of the unknown, and the music was magical. Your videos have teased our senses, all but for one, we couldn't taste the pizza or the fine wine. You are a master, clever, and have many skills. Your personality, humor, and soft spoken manner has us all drawn in, leaning closer to the telly or screen. Riding shotgun on your adventure. For some it is just a dream and others entertainment . For others, sharing your experience with those that wish to do the same, your generosity of spirit explaining additional expenses and the planning permission process was an eyeopener. Then there are those, like myself that just love a reno, the vision, and the transformation of a place in need of some love. So fingers crossed that the planning process has been approved, that your vision of a sympathetic restoration unfolds. Hoping those lovely front doors remain as the gateway to your dream of the sweet life. Should the picture window not meet planning approval maybe two windows ( the same style as the rest) in that room will get the pass. Just maybe a tad bigger to take in that wonderful view and sunsets. Good to see a proper mask, essential when knocking down walls etc, I've seem my house pour "smoke dust" out the windows, some much that I was surprised nobody called the fire department. Even the mask when in the outbuildings with rat droppings, mold spores, and flaking paint that could be old lead based. More so when you have asthma. There is no such thing as too much tat in the kitchen when you love cooking, just like guys can never have too many tools. As for that little scorpion, although small, it's sting will still be a very painful and venomous. They tend to hide so check your trainers, wellingtons, and slippers etc. I was stung taking the wash off the line, it was hiding in a tee shirt. I have never been across the pond, but Italy would have been my choice. For the food, architecture, people, and the land. The sweet life. Oscar Farinette was brilliant. Thank you for that. What a chin wag, and you thought you rambled! Thank you, your videos are bellisimo!
Hi @LindaSiuzdak . That is lovely. Thank you for writing and taking the time. Lets hope you get that trip to Italy one day...it is worth the long flight, thats for sure. Best wishes to you and thank you. I really enjoyed reading your message.😊
@@threeacresofmarche It'd be a long trip for this Canadian now living on Mexico's Pacific coast. So I can related to your basking in the sun. But nothing isn't possible if you don't make it happen. My parents immigrated from Europe back in 51 - they were in that 80% that Oscar Farinetti talked about. I still have a half brother living in Germany.
Brilliant work..the dust and rubble just goes for days, doesn't it. 😷 I'm sure you've made so much more progress since you filmed this. When the contractor was taking down one of my walls in my renovation (cinder block wall) they used a jackhammer/concrete breaker. You might already be done with opening up the walls in your renovation, so this suggestion is irrelevant. I look forward to seeing your reveal 🎉🎊 Have a great weekend! 🌞
Hi @lisasbeautifuljourney , I have bought a jack hammer since this was filmed and somebody has suggested a different tool that I will get for next time! More smashing up later this year so I should be better prepared.😁
Well done! We've been following since your first vlog. Beautiful property, stunning location, and the house is coming along. We're looking forward to finding our own slice of Italy, and the process info is extremly helpful and inspiring. Thanks for bringing us along with you.
You're welcome @dinod1968 . Thank you for watching and I hope you find what you are looking for also. The journey is amazing...even with the challenges of the processes. Good luck!🙌
Good job. Was massage time after that I’m sure. Was thinking lower the centre part where it was catching a bit (and on yr fingers) as that was coming out anyway. But easy to say from my comfy position. Great effort.
😂 Thanks @jennichristie5264 . No such luck after.😫 That middle part has loads of room - it was that light beam getting heavier and heavier and heavier as the 5 minute job dragged on.😂
Suffer now!!! (lots of hard work) enjoy the glory of your achievements later. Another gr8 vid. Keep at it. Your doing gr8, specially solo!!. Loving following your journey. Cheers Your like Martin(Doolard in the sun)
Good to see the progress and learning curve proceed; but... nowhere near enough swearing for a proper home-build. Edit to add: as for beams, as a Sergeant Major once said 'If force doesn't work, you aren't using enough.' 👍
Wish I was able to meet up with ya for when your there to give ya a hand, I have built houses trench to trim mate, here in Ventura/Ojai Ca. Your doing a fantastic job I must say with what’s available to you and the tools you have to use. Great work and I enjoy seeing when you have a video up. Wine is fine after good work days. Can’t be a dull boy…
Thanks @ronniesherpalee4150 . The tool collection is growing but there is something nice about working with hand tools...or is that just me? Cheers - and thank you for the offer of help. One day I may be organised enough to have a few stop by.👍
OMG, I was trying to reach in to help. LOL. So good to see you finally starting on the inside. What is your neighbor doing for you with the tractor? I don't quite understand. Thanks. :)
Hi @EricOnTH-cam . The tractor was digging a trench that surrounds the house. It is 6 to 9 inches deep to gather rain water as it runs off the hills in the winter. All the fields have them dug in around that time of year. Those rains that I had in a previous video - the person that dug those above the house did not dig them deep enough and they collapsed...hence that mud and water gathering at the back of the house. This was a proper job thanks to Dennis and his brother.👍
I'd like to think so @marianneryder1661 but with work and travel I have only had around 5 full days free to work on the house since this video was filmed. I get an little time before work in but the big jobs have had to wait. Its getting there....slowly.😁

Well done Richard, Man vs Beam indeed - glad man won!
you are just amazing, ........... I live in London and also have my Marche place, so relaxing place
Thanks for watching @matteorinaldi1269 - what part of Marche is your place?
Loving this channel, many many years ago I bought a run down 3 story townhouse in the UK and while still working, I lived in an armchair which was my only piece of furniture and I single handedly sorted it while still working long 12 hour shifts 30 miles away.

It'd be a long trip for this Canadian now living on Mexico's Pacific coast.
So I can related to your basking in the sun.
But nothing isn't possible if you don't make it happen.
My parents immigrated from Europe back in 51 - they were in that 80% that Oscar Farinetti talked about. I still have a half brother living in Germany.
Impressive
Brilliant work..the dust and rubble just goes for days, doesn't it. 😷 I'm sure you've made so much more progress since you filmed this. When the contractor was taking down one of my walls in my renovation (cinder block wall) they used a jackhammer/concrete breaker. You might already be done with opening up the walls in your renovation, so this suggestion is irrelevant. I look forward to seeing your reveal 🎉🎊 Have a great weekend! 🌞
After 20 years I still remember the taste of plaster dust.
@@davidlanders2853 right? One never forgets…and living/sleeping/cooking/eating in a construction/renovation zone..phew!
Hi @lisasbeautifuljourney , I have bought a jack hammer since this was filmed and somebody has suggested a different tool that I will get for next time! More smashing up later this year so I should be better prepared.😁
@@threeacresofmarche Oh, that sounds exciting, I look forward to the transformation.👏
That’s a tough job for a single man! Congratulations
Thanks @MrGrsrrt . Chipping away at it - its not too bad.😅
Well done ,doing that wrk on your own ,real heavy beam ,,when you get it the way you want it will all been worth it so dont push urself ,
Crikey Richard. What a battle that was !! You said grab a glass of wine but I ended up drinking half a bottle in sympathy with you.... Good job.
Good for you for stopping half way down the bottle @speedbird8326 .😁
@@threeacresofmarche Trust me I was tempted to keep going 🤣🤣🤣
Still here, still watching, still enjoying :-)
That wore me out watching it :D Thank the maker that you got it up there! :)
Had to chuckle...been there, done that. Well done!
....never again or have you done more since? @user-vy3vk2sb8p😁
Good luck!🙌
Congratulations on your new project! Just found your channel two days ago, stay the course…great work!
Welcome @tomnixon9551 . Thank you!
Keep going mate your doing a great job some jobs can be pain on your own
Thanks @sofaboy11👍
You must be a builder!
An apprentice on his first week builder, maybe!😂 @bertibear1300
Bit worried if you have an accident working on your own. A Plan be may need to be thought of
Glad you survived that!
Great show and I loved the reference!
Thank you @Frenchstarfish3 . Dexter or the book (The Shining) ?😂
@threeacresofmarche Hi! Dexter...I didn't hear the Shining referenced...but a good classic!
That was exhausting watching you battle with the beam lol
Did the glass of wine help @anneofgreengables1619 ? We all deserve one. 😂
😅 That beam was a struggle! I am considering buying an old Italian house. I am learning here. Good luck.
Thank you @larsonbwl . Go for it! The journey and adventure of it all is amazing.☺️
Good job, Richard.
Wow è bellissimo!!!
Well done, great video. 😊
Keep going. Like your videos a lot.
Well done, you!
Good job. Was massage time after that I’m sure. Was thinking lower the centre part where it was catching a bit (and on yr fingers) as that was coming out anyway. But easy to say from my comfy position. Great effort.
😂 Thanks @jennichristie5264 . No such luck after.😫 That middle part has loads of room - it was that light beam getting heavier and heavier and heavier as the 5 minute job dragged on.😂
Well done. Keep at it
Suffer now!!! (lots of hard work) enjoy the glory of your achievements later. Another gr8 vid. Keep at it. Your doing gr8, specially solo!!. Loving following your journey. Cheers Your like Martin(Doolard in the sun)
Thank you @eziotaddeo1726 ! I think Martijn has a lot more craft and creative skills than I do.😂
Good to see the progress and learning curve proceed; but... nowhere near enough swearing for a proper home-build. Edit to add: as for beams, as a Sergeant Major once said 'If force doesn't work, you aren't using enough.' 👍
Funny you say that - I did cut a few key moans out!😂
Bon courage et bonjour de Belgique ♥️😊🇧🇪🔥🔥🔥
Hi @delwichedanielle3999🙌
Wish I was able to meet up with ya for when your there to give ya a hand, I have built houses trench to trim mate, here in Ventura/Ojai Ca. Your doing a fantastic job I must say with what’s available to you and the tools you have to use. Great work and I enjoy seeing when you have a video up. Wine is fine after good work days. Can’t be a dull boy…
Thanks @ronniesherpalee4150 . The tool collection is growing but there is something nice about working with hand tools...or is that just me? Cheers - and thank you for the offer of help. One day I may be organised enough to have a few stop by.👍
Rent a Demo saw. Well worth the money.
Bravo!
I'll watch immediately after food and Cider.
Good work mate!
Thank you @paulrayner1274
hello, about the dust you probably benefit from a shop vac, good luck
Mr. Beam 😅 keep up the good work!
Great viewing.
Brilliant ! Takes real guts to do all that on your own. You said in the video it was November so now Spring 2024 must be a lot further forward ?
I'd like to think so @marianneryder1661 but with work and travel I have only had around 5 full days free to work on the house since this video was filmed. I get an little time before work in but the big jobs have had to wait. Its getting there....slowly.😁
I look forward to every video. Thanks for showing the real work, and keep it coming. BTW, where's the saucy shower scene? 😉
😂 I have family that watch this! @juliec3965
Might make work bit easier, you might invest in a Jack hammer. If it’s feasible.
HI @gracekarina7186 . Yes - agreed. I bought one....it should make a star appearance in a forthcoming video.🙌
Hello Richard, watching from N. Wales. I'm trying to decide where to buy a rural property and I'm been looking at Portugal but just extended my search to Italy and came across you. What made you choose Italy?
Hi @pennywabbit3684 . I get asked that often....I cover these reasons in this video th-cam.com/video/SdmKQyS4_TE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=jd9pnfEWpYnKkqmj
Edit "brick-prop it -Acetaminophen - wine". Great episode, thanks.
Thanks @davidlanders2853
Not proud of it but I know my language would have been more colourful wrestling with that beam. Good on you for your self control or editing skills.
