I've had two Mercedes and I want to tell you that my local dealer's maintenance department was far better at picking my pockets than they were at fixing my cars. I have been driving a 96 Acura 2.5TL for almost 15 years and I don't even need that Acura maintenance department. The car just keeps running like a Swiss watch.
@@CarAudioObsessions My Toyota Previa is a 93 - the Acura is a '96. Sorry. Five cylinder as with the Vigor. It looks like a Lexus es300 of the same era. My friend had one of those and we agreed that the Acura was a better performing luxury ride. I don't hope to ever own a better quality car.
My brother in law is a wholesaler for a large metro Ford dealership. He would 100% agree with not buying a high mileage hybrid. They don’t bring any type decent money at the auto auctions.
I drive for Uber and picked up a Japanese lady from a Mercedes dealership. We start talking and she declares she will never buy another Mercedes again! (A C-class model as I recall). I ask why. She says it’s a 2023 and it’s been in the shop far too often. Last time it was oil leaking from somewhere, before that an electrical issue, now the battery! Joking with her and making her laugh, I told her she’s a Japanese-American and should know better!! Laughing she said I know!! But their damn marketing folks tricked her. She announced by the end of the trip that her next car will in fact be a Lexus. 😅
My dad bought a 2003 Mercedes Benz E320 sedan - built in Stutgardt Germany. I inherited it last year. The car has a V6, 18 valve motor that lasts forever. The car is an absolute gem. With the exception of maintenance, we've had no issues. All that said, I would agree with anyone about the newer MB's being junk. A lot of plastic parts and materials that break down. The Germans make the mistake of over engineering their cars. Porsche, Mercedes, BMW.... They load their cars with too many clever bells and whistles, and spend less focus on quality.
Scotty is right! I traded my 2023 GLE 350 4matic (4 cylinder). After 17,000 miles that (Nissan made engine) started the dreaded chain slap, I sold it! I bought a 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD ORP! Thanks, Scotty for wisely reminding us what’s more important!😅
My toyota hilux finally wore out after 25yrs of everyday use. So I'm going to rebuild the engine myself. 12 months of engine rebuilding at mechanics school has come in handy.
Scotty I got a 1991 Mercedes Benz 190e 2.3 it was my first car I still own it it has 155k miles on it and made in Germany I love the car I take really good care of it and I have no issues with it the older Mercedes were much better than the modern day ones for sure! 😊
I had a '94 S500 for 16 yrs, drove like new when I switched it to a S63 AMG in 2010, still driving like a champ. My gf has a Lexus have had so much electrical problems that u can't even imagine.
Here in South Africa 🇿🇦, some overlanding tour operators don't allow Jeep on safari tours. Unreliability could result in fatalities. American junk shouldn't stray far from the dealerships.
Hi Scottie. I just wanted to give a shout out about my car. I have a Prius, that I bought new in late 2020. I have an airport shuttle business, so, needless to say, I drive A LOT. It has 214,000 miles on it, and I have had absolutely no trouble with it. I change the oil myself, and do it every 5,000 miles without fail. That is basically all I do, or have done with it, and it runs as good as the day I bought it. I would do a commercial for Toyota for free.
@@cpsinc6052 Unless it’s a ‘23 or ‘24. But yeah, before that not so much. Still, there’s a difference between buying a hybrid or a sports car. Oh but wait…
I just recently sold my 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid, GREAT car. Totally trouble free, extremely reliable, great gas mileage. When I sold it, it had about 108k miles on it, and a year left to go on the 5 year loan. I was able to pay off the loan balance, and still have $2900 in my pocket. I love Toyotas ! Before that, I had a 2014 Chevy Cruze. It was a nice commuter car, but it seemed like the engine light was always on for some reason or the other, and whenever it developed a new problem, it would always display the 'Stabilitrak' error message. Fortunately the Cruze had a 100k powertrain warranty, which really saved my butt. At 99k miles, it developed a problem with the intake manifold. It would have cost me about $1200 at the Chevy dealer, but that warranty saved the day. I would greatly prefer to buy American, but GM and Ford and Chrysler have got some serious work to do, in terms of quality and reliability.
4 years ago I bought my "last" car. I used to always lease a new Ford F-150, but I'm retired now and couldn't afford a 4x4. I went with A 2014 Ford Taurus SEL all whell drive. with 91k miles I've had only one unexpected repair - the serp belt broke. Other than that, only routine maint. The Taurus has a reputation of being "bullet proof." What do you think?
I’ve owned two Mercedes. A sedan and a SUV, still driving the SUV and I’ve never had a problem with either vehicle. I change my own oil and do some very minor mechanical work on them. (brakes, air filter, oil changes and oil filters and cabin filters).
I agree with almost all of your post..My only objection is saying people are "stupid"..Maybe using "misinformed" could replace that word..Thanks Scotty--keep up the work!
Sad days. My 2004 Nissan titan final blew a head gasket at 500k. Runs great i just can't keep coolant in it. Exhaust pressurize the cooling system. In 15 years I've never pulled the dipstick out on the transmission
My work van here in Ontario, Canada (2009, E250, 4.6) has 310,000 km on it and is still running pretty well, PLUS!! I get to learn how to weld replacement body panels on it, win-win I'd say? lol. It's been a good vehicle over the years. no complaints. FJT!!
I own a 2014 jeep grand Cherokee with a 3.6L engine and ZF 8 speed transmission. I have done about 150k miles on it. Do I need to change the transmission oil, even it is a ZF transmission? Thank you
I put BMW right up there also. A guy wanted to give me a 2008 BMW M5, engine was replaced. I said what about transmission ? Oh, you are on transmission # 3 and that one is failing ?? Oh hell no.
Scotty, love your channel, just sharing a longevity topic, engines that are notorious for lasting, the JEEP 4.0L straight 6, I've got 2 of them. I've got a 2000 Wrangler TJ 5 spd with 190k on it, as well as a 1996 Cherokee XJ SPORT, 3" lift with just 31's with 390k on it, both with the 4.0L. Oh, and they are my treacherous winter travel vehicles at 6,000 feet elevation in Wyoming.
My wife had a 2015 GLA 250. Car was great when new... The sun roof quit working and the dealer wanted over $4000 to repair. She now drives a Toyota, as do I.
I listened to you. After 10 minutes, I just subscribed. I'm born and raised in DETROIT. Even though I'm in I.T., I've done most of my work for the big three, and just finished a 4 year stint at Toyota. What you say about these car companies is LEGIT. My brother is a mechanical engineer, and worked most of his life at Chrysler, and I also listen to the engineers at every automotive company I do work at. That's how I know you are legit. What you recommend and say aligns with what I see these companies put out, and what these engineers say is garbage and isn't, and they don't cover for their employers, either. You are legit.
I had mechanics that I trust similar to you, Scotty that said never do a flush of a transmission. I had taken the car to the actual dealer and guess what they wanted to do. Yep. Luckily, I listened to the real mechanics.
Thanks for the information. I recently had a new engine replaced in my 2018 Ford Escape. Ford replaced it free of charge when the car was blowing white smoke out of the tailpipes after 50,000 miles. What’s your take on this new engine?
I just got rid of my 1999 SL 500, this car cost me about 1000$ per year, so maintenance must be kept up, but you need to spend to keep it beautiful. Biggest mistake I made by selling, but I would have to climb out, so damn.
My Mercedes-Benz 240D automatic was sold at 768,000 km. I just got bored with it; my biggest mistake. I replaced it with a Toyota from hell. That is where that unreliable jap crap was made.
Hi! First Timer here, great content, entertaining, & I subscribed! I don’t know a thing about cars but I know a lot about sleazy car repair men, who just make things up to take your hard earned money! Maybe I’ll learn something! 👍🥳
A car is taken to a shop for used car inspection. The shop passed the car, good condition, customer pays, leaves & buys it. Is the shop liable for missed faults found shortly after?
I have had several experienced mechanics & service advisors say if your transmission has gone a real.long, long time w/o the fluid being changed DON'T change it! Apparently after changing after so long the plates can slip because that metallic grit in the fluid helped them stick to each other. So l've been told, interested in your opinion Scotty?
I have a 2018 Chevy Cruze that shuts down at lights. Does this save enough gas to make up for all the time the starter restarts? How long will the starter last?
Acura Integra was a decent car, had one. it was a cash hog, ac, ball joints, clutch, radiator, wheel bearings, trans lost 5th gear, leaking sunroof, fuel pump, rust, paint fell off, rack went out, the engine being a Honda 1.6 ran till it over heated 115,000 miles with meticulous oil changes and kind driving. The Civic would have surely been a better choice.
I bought an 01 pathfinder for $200 in 2021 and am still driving it. Leaks oil but still running good! Just my runaround truck so my Scion stays nice and tidy in the garage lol.
Its very possible with almost all Mercedes. It's just dependent on who maintains your Mercedes. Your brother was smart and probably went to a good dealership or had an excellent mechanic.
@pnwdweler4100 Lamborghini is owned by Audi. Audi is owned by Volkswagen. It's not the same thing. Acura is only sold in the USA. It is just a Honda re-badge so they could be marketed in USA without the stigma of being a Japanese brand!
If you have a good reliable car that you like, keep it. Fix it when it breaks. It will reward you with long term satisfaction and is a lot cheaper than buying new.
As for not flushing the transmission, how do you then get all the fluid out when changing it? I was told when you just drain it, you are only getting about half the fluid out. Therefore, when you put new fluid in, only half the fluid in the transmission is new. Am I right? Anyone?
@@TheOpponent951 Scotty says flushing may flush pieces of dirt in and he saw a lot of transmissions ruined due to this. I'm not sure why pieces of dirt would be flushed in. Maybe the transmissions he saw ruined were flushed by techs/mechanics that didn't do it right? If a tech/mechanic has done a number of these flush jobs, wouldn't he do it so no dirt gets in? I'm puzzled.
@@filippocorti6760 I guess I'm not sure how dirt could get in from a flush, but I do know flushing has caused transmission failures in higher mileage vehicles, or vehicles with irregularly changed fluid, and vehicles that have old fluid, as from what I know, the clutch pack material will build up in the fluid over time and if you flush out an old system with a lot of clutch material the new fluid ruins the system as the only thing holding the worn out transmission together in the first place was the material floating around. It's always advised to do a drain and fill on most older cars especially, and I had a Toyota dealership completely decline to do a transmission fluid change, let alone a flush, on a 200,000+ mile 99 Camry Solara I had. It's always a gamble as automatic transmissions are just finicky, and I went to a private transmission shop, had them do a drain and fill and filter change, and the car benefitted from it and I luckily had minor to no issues after the fluid change. it did act weird a few times when down shifting, but that ended up going away, and I believe it was due to the Overdrive 4th gear setup being a little sensitive in those cars, but all in all I was glad I changed the fluid and only went with the drain and fill. Lucas transmission stop leak is a wonderful product that is used as a last ditch effort to save worn out transmissions after a flush or drain and fill, because that stuff will help take up the space/material that has work off on the old clutch pack.
Mercedes goes on the fact that people will pay for the name, not necessarily quality. If someone can afford a Merc they figure that person shouldn't have a problem with handing over big dollars for repairs because if the customer quibbles over the bill it shows they're a cheapskate and not really as affluent as they're making themselves out to be.
I am in in my sixties and have be through about thirty cars since 1979. The best and most reliable automobiles I have owned are Ford and Mazda. GM, Mopar and VW the worst.
I drive less than 3k miles per year, I can't decide on getting a new lexus es 350 for 48k or something older with 100k miles for 20k or less. Most carfax reports say 10k mile oil changes, its really hard finding ones with 5k and under oil changes. Also I'm worried about rubber and seals wearing out on older stuff going forward. I don't mind keeping the lexus for 40 years doing 3k mile oil changes, but would I be wasting money? I don't really want something that'll fall apart 10-15 years down the road and I don't like all the speed limiter talk etc for new cars. This is my last chance to grab a decent V6
Would only ever buy a pre 90s Benz built buy pure square heads. Those cars were great. Grandfather had a 560 sel …..was a boat but with 450k on it it still functioned perfectly
I'm crying in my beer over wrecking the best car I ever owned, a 1994 Toyota Corolla with 256,000 miles on it. I'm retired now and bought a used 2015 Toyota corolla with 35,000 miles, The screen in the dash wont let me program Bluetooth to connect my phone for Spotify, and my new phone doesn't have a headphone plug-in. What ever happened to the good old days of $200.00 cars that lasted 10 years?
I had a hell of a time when i first bought my 2011 tundra. The toyota Bluetooth setup is pretty terrible, but once its paired it works fairly well. Hope you get it figured out.
@@waynehoffman1791 Just wanted to play my music from my Spotify account that I pay for but can't use while driving is all. and answer the phone when it rings, pickup and hang up is in the steering wheel.
Got a question for those more knowledgeable than me. I’m considering buying a different vehicle next summer. I’m currently looking at midsize trucks like a Tacoma or Honda ridgeline. I would use the truck as a daily commuter on pavement roads and occasional trips to Home Depot. I would be rare for me to pull a trailer. I like the Tacoma Sport for the 3rd gen V6 engine and retaining value. I’d drive it stock, but care too much about accessory upgrades. I like the Ridgeline for the extra cabin space (for our 1 year old in a baby seat), comfortability, and extra storage under the bed. Both beds are 5 foot. What would people recommend and what are extra things to consider?
Hmm. I bought a 2012 Prius in 2012 and drove it until April of this year when I bought a 2024 Prius! My 2012 had 172,000+ miles on it! I did not trade it in, I gave it to my daughter and her husband! They are still driving it to this day; it now has a tad over 180,000 miles on it!! It still has all the parts it originally came with -- INCLUDING THE BRAKES and, yes, the battery!! Sorry, Scotty, but I completely disagree with your assessment of the Toyota Prius!!! We take it in for oil changes every time the car's maintenance warning tells us to. That's the only preventative thing we do! Of course, we also don't drive it like a hot rod... Come to think of it, we did change the auxiliary battery twice (the second time didn't cost me anything because it was still under warranty), and that only cost the same as a typical battery in a non-hybrid car/truck (around $200 where Toyota changed it out, not me). The main battery is still intact! I'm definitely a Prius convert!!
I flushed my two cars (I stiil have both) the last 20 years, since they were new. Both work perfectly, with motors showing the same noise and running as 20 years ago. 😂
We have a 1991 GMC 1500 and a 1993 GMC Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. yeah the plastic is faded, and warping. They both still run and the cost of miniatous is still far less expensive than newer car payments + whatever the miniatous on the newer cars would be. The truck even has roll up windows and manual transmission. We love our old cars. i doubt any of the new cars out now will last near as long as our beloved old cars. My previous cat was a 1989 F100, just couldn't get parts for it anymore or I would still be driving it.
hello master of mechanic’s what are u think about 2012 toyota camry se ive just get transmission problem after 260k i think incan still drive it for another 300k what u think sir❤
We have three Mercedes Benzes. Two 07 E350s, my wife and I had our own and a 1982 MB240D. We still have them each. One of the 350s has 205k miles and the 82 as 225. They’ve been amazing cars. I gave my e350 to my 20 year old son and looking at S550s for my best car. Prior we owned Volvos, five, which have been great cars. My daughter drives the S60R I gave her. We also have a Ford Excursion, a 6 liter diesel, with 300k miles. Great diesel also, wouldn’t trade for a 7.3. I enjoy watching Scotty, but my experience with MBs has been excellent. I do take it to a mechanic I trust, who is an excellent and trustworthy technician. Now MB dealers I don’t like much.
A careful owner who has a good mechanic (or does the work themselves) is a great way to have reliable transportation. I worked in a couple dealerships and much of the work that the other guys sent out was REALLY bad. Many times they created more problems than they fixed so unless it's a recall situation...I'd stay away from dealerships unless you happen to have that rare one with good technicians who are honest and competent. If you got 300K out of a Ford 6.0 PowerStroke...my hat is off to you Sir! You are doing something very right as those engines were lots of trouble for many people. I don't care to work on diesels but ended up neck deep in them because the other guys in my last shop just couldn't figure out how to fix them. I do know some guys who say the 6.0 is their favorite engine because they put all their kids through college.
@@recoilrob324 your last comment made me laugh. I also appreciate the advice per dealerships. Integrity is not the rule of thumb, that has been my experience. I've heard mostly bad things about the 6.0. I was even warned before we purchased the Excursion years ago, to look for the 7.3. But after investigating, I decided to go with the 6.0 and it really has been a gem. I'm shooting for 500k plus, at least that's what I told me son when he asked. We just came back from a long trip, pulling a camper trailer from Sacramento CA to Tennessee, then Georgia and back. At campsites I've spoken to guys pulling with a 7.3 Powerstroke and they had to drive at about 30 miles an hour coming up the hill, but not us. It's funny though, because they always feel sorry for me when I tell them I have a 6.0, but I end up feeling sorry for them. lol. I must have gotten lucky. I do keep the fluids changed regularly and drive our cars pretty responsibility. That said, I do like to drive and I am almost ready to pull the trigger on a S600... I've been researching the coils, suspension etc... but I am about to. Maybe my attitude will change on the MB then :) I'm looking at an 05, so it comes with the notorious coil packs. Maybe I'll have a story for Scotty, so he can say I told yo so! :)
Scotty I bought a 1984 GMC High Sierra and the choke light came on. Electric choke, truck is leaking some oil but haven't figured out from where yet. Is the choke light on due to low oil pressure or is it something else?
I totally agree that Mercedes Benz is a money pit, even the simplest thing like a dealer oil change runs $175. Mine has been fairly reliable but other things like a cracked windshield ($1,750), replacing a side view mirror ($1,020) that was broken by a bicycle passing by and a leaky, small plastic windshield washer fluid tank ($260) make ownership very expensive. The ride in a MB however is hard to beat.
Consider getting a tool kit and doing preventive maintenance and even repairs yourself. Online a person can get a basic scanner to plug for for diagnostics for $50. Also get a good manual.
$175 for an oil change sounds good to me. I drive a 2017 Jaguar F Pace. Jaguar dealer quoted $530 for an oil change service. I get it done at a local auto shop instead.
Why would anybody buy a Mercedes or Jaguar if they can’t do their own oil change? ..of course those dealers are going to rip you off. They know you are rich and stupid. But then, you can probably afford it so don’t complain.
Old cars are a maintenance nightmare. Even when they have low mileage. Seals go bad and rubber cracks. You’ll be replacing things left and right just because of age.
Had a Lexus es300 from 96. Sold it last year and drove is for 15 years. Besides oil changes and brake pads no problems at all. 200k miles and the new owner is still driving it daily.
@@austinhernandez2716 that’s true unless you’re trying to chase down vacuum leaks. Lots of older vehicles used a lot of vacuum lines. I have a 98 Silverado. It’s very easy to work on and I don’t mind spending money to keep it up. It’s still like new. But I’ve replaced a lot of things on it.

It has 214,000 miles on it, and I have had absolutely no trouble with it. I change the oil myself, and do it every 5,000 miles without fail. That is basically all I do, or have done with it, and it runs as good as the day I bought it. I would do a commercial for Toyota for free.

As for not flushing the transmission, how do you then get all the fluid out when changing it? I was told when you just drain it, you are only getting about half the fluid out. Therefore, when you put new fluid in, only half the fluid in the transmission is new. Am I right? Anyone?
I've done 2 BG trannie flushes, no problems. You're right the BG vacuumed out all the fluid not just 4 or 5 quarts you get normally.
yeah. you don't get all the fluid out. the only way to is it flush it, but it's worse to flush them than to just drain and fill + filter change.
@@kenlandon7803 Thanks. What is "BG"?
Had one Mercedes and will never touch another one with a ten foot pole. Total piece of gargage. Always something breaking.

Sorry, Scotty, but I completely disagree with your assessment of the Toyota Prius!!! We take it in for oil changes every time the car's maintenance warning tells us to. That's the only preventative thing we do! Of course, we also don't drive it like a hot rod... Come to think of it, we did change the auxiliary battery twice (the second time didn't cost me anything because it was still under warranty), and that only cost the same as a typical battery in a non-hybrid car/truck (around $200 where Toyota changed it out, not me). The main battery is still intact! I'm definitely a Prius convert!!

Yes! You are so right!
Prius batteries last a long time and single cells are replaceable. Old Priuses are driven as taxis/ubers here in Poland and soldier on like champs.
I have two Mercedes convertibles a 2014 and 213 slk fun to drive no problems.
Old cars are a maintenance nightmare. Even when they have low mileage. Seals go bad and rubber cracks. You’ll be replacing things left and right just because of age.
They're usually much easier to repair though
Had a Lexus es300 from 96. Sold it last year and drove is for 15 years. Besides oil changes and brake pads no problems at all. 200k miles and the new owner is still driving it daily.
