    Will My Car Battery Die from Installing a Dash Cam?
    The short answer is no. A couple factors is, how you install it, and how you set the dash camera up. If you have a dash camera without low battery protection, and you do not drive your vehicle regularly. As a result, there is a good chance you will kill your battery. Dash cameras sold at Safe Drive Solutions all have low battery protection. We recommend setting this for 12 volts or higher to protect your battery. For this common question about dash cams, we provide an example below.
    Once I had a client say the dash camera killed their battery. After investigating we found out they had been leaving their interior light on for quite a few weeks. There is lots of factors that can kill your vehicles battery, for example leaving an accessory plugged into your cigarette lighter all night. However, getting a bad cell in your battery or leaving the interior light on all night is more common. These types of things happen but getting a dash cam with low battery protection you should be fine. If you are still worried get a backup battery for your dash cam.

    I know there's different variables that may persuade this answer (ambient heat, battery health, and various kinds of parking mode a user can select, i.e., Impact only, adjustable FPS, buffered, time lapse), assuming a hard-wire to the fuse box install, meaning, no power cell, then approximately how many hours (generally) can someone expect to get parking mode functionality assuming 12v is selected as the low voltage cut-off for battery protection?
    Most videos talk about how many hours they can get with the added power cell but I've yet to find one that answers how many hours they can realistically (or ball park) get from just the car battery.

      So I get this question a lot and there is way too many factors. Such as size of vehicle battery, whether your vehicle has 2 batteries, Do you have any other aftermarket accessories installed for instance GPS tracking. But generally what I find is that if you drive everyday and your battery is in good health.
      Front and Rear Motion Detection / Time Lapse / or Auto Event Detection
      3-6 hours due to the current draw on most vehicles (200-250ma current draw)
      Front and Rear Energy Saving Mode (Impact Only) F790 / Q800pro / U1000
      4-5 days plus (10-18ma of current draw)
      Front only Motion Detection / TIme Lapse / Auto Event detection
      4-8 hours due to the current draw on most vehicles (120-160ma)
      Obviously all approximates. I do know some vehicles that will get a solid 16 hours with a 3 channel which is even more current draw then listed but those are generally 2 battery vehicles like a Diesel truck.

      For my daughters' vehicles specifically (one goes to school, the other at work), I was basically wanting to figure out if the cam is hard-wired, would a 6-8 hr period of time be sufficient as-is or would I need to invest in a backup battery.

    *I find a lot of dashcam comes prebuilt with a unit that cuts off at 11.6V and there's no way to change it... But I find that way too low and my power always dies. When I was using a Power Magic Pro with a Blackvue, I could manually set the cutoff at 12V and my car never drained to the point I couldn't start the ignition.*

    Hi, first thank you for the excellent videos, I purchased the Viofo 119 V3 and use it on my 2013 CRV 2 weeks ago with a cigarette lighter that is "ignition based".
    You mentioned lighters without ignition based feature but not the ignition based cigarette lighter. My questions is, my dash cam turns off after I turn off the ignition.
    Do I still need to disconnect the "ignition based" cigarette lighter when I get home?
    BTW I purchased the Viofo A229 Duo with the HK4, but I have not installed it yet. I plan to have a professional install it. Will you plan to test the current draw for the Viofo dash cams?
    If there a local Safe Drive solution site I would visit but there is not. Thanks for the great video!

      I have tested current draw about a month ago and it is same as Thinkware and IROAD dash cams. If your cigarette lighter is ignition controlled you do not need to worry about it at all. It is mainly for vehicles that have constant power.

    I have just ordered the Viofo A129 Duo Pro & intend to hard wire it via a fuse tap in my 2020 Toyota Corolla which is a hybrid. This may be more of a question for Toyota but if my dash cam was to run the battery down which it shouldn't do as I intend to set cut off at 12v. But if it did would the hybrid battery kick in to help in either continuing to power the dash cam or assisting the cars engine to start?

    • @SafeDriveSolutions

      That is definitely a question for Toyota. I recently was sent some information that possibly on my fully electric car the battery may kick in to charge my accessory battery. I still need to verify if this is true or not. My vehicle is a KIA though.

      You need the HK3 parking mode cable. for parking mode to work. However I do believe that if you are sitting stationary for 5 minutes parking mode will kick in on the unit. But the engine of course needs to be on for this to happen and the vehicle is not moving. I personally would not set any of the parking mode settings on that unit without the cable. But it is an older gen unit so there could be some settings I am unfamiliar with.

    My dash cam has an internal battery. What would be the purpose of this, if I have it hardwired for constant power? Should I wire it to turn off with the ignition? Yes, it has motion detection, and impact. Parking mode must be turned on manually after you have stopped. I thing the motion detection only works with the front camera. Is there another way to connect the ACC yellow wire from other sources inside the cabin? Is it possible to just leave the ACC yellow wire alone since the unit has the voltage regulator to protect the battery from draining out? Any guidance is highly appreciated.

    • @SafeDriveSolutions
      @SafeDriveSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad our video helped you decide on dash camera.
      So a few things here. 1. Yellow wire must be hooked up to an ignition or it will not operate properly at all. I know this for a fact because I accidentally 1 time hooked up yellow and red backwards as Thinkware, IROAD and GNET red and yellow are opposites and the dash cam would not record at all.
      However that is also because the constant power was losing power(ha ha). So my advice to you is 1 of 2 things.
      1. Find a shop familiar with how to hardwire as there is wires available to hook up but they require unplugging plugs at your computer, stripping back the wire, soldering, and taping the wire. (We do not share this information out as a lot of damage can be done if not done correctly)
      2. Here is a video with fuse wiring layout for your vehicle I found online. th-cam.com/video/7kJ5KMZY_Ag/w-d-xo.html Also another tidbit that some times works. See all the fuse locations that are not being used. Test to see if any of those empty locations test as ignition. Lots of vehicles have an ignition in these empty spots.

      depends on how long you are expecting the parking mode to work. If you are only looking for 1-3 hours. set it for 3 hours or less and minimum 12 volts low battery protection and you should be fine. if you are expecting it to record overnight or for longer periods of time a battery pack would be agreat an investment. Keep in mind to test your factory battery to see how healthy it is.

      If you are looking for a powercell I would recommend looking at Blackvue B-124X, Cell link Neo, Thinkware also has a smaller one. These are only units we have experience with.

    • @SafeDriveSolutions
      @SafeDriveSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@YounesNex So the way a powercell works is a few ways. 1. You plug it into a cigarette lighter of your vehicle that only supplies power with switched ignition. While driving the powercell will charge up. This takes approximately 45 minutes to fully charge the powercell. One you turn vehicle off the powercell will no longer charge and turn to parking mode. The dash camera enters parking mode and will power dash cam until the powercell is fully discharged. One completely discharged it will turn off and it will not turn on again until you start the vehicle up again. Hence starting the process all over again of charging it up.

    • @SafeDriveSolutions
      @SafeDriveSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello @blackJoxer not sure where you are located but in Canada there is a lot of places you can go and get a free battery test provided you bring your battery inside. They can find out what the CCA or Cold Cranking Amps are and give recommendations on whether or not your car battery needs to be replaced. Over time car battery will need to be replaced. In terms of which car battery to use I would recommend having a powercell which is independent from the battery and will power the dash camera seperate from the battery but will charge while driving.

      @@SafeDriveSolutions ohh, you just made me think of something I have never considered. You mentioned car batteries needing to be replaced every so many years because through normal operation (whether connected to auxiliary devices or not), they eventually stop holding a charge and die (or decrease in CCAs to where they can no longer turn an engine)
      What then is the life expectancy of these stand alone batteries? At the premium they command (north of $500 in some cases), depending on their life span, one could argue it's more cost effective to simply use and replace regular car batteries when they do go and most come with several years warranty that most likely exceed those of the power cells.
      This topic/analysis would be a great discussion for a future video provided you've not done so already.

    • @SafeDriveSolutions
      @SafeDriveSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nothing_burger It is a great idea. I will have to see how much time I can get to do some of these tests. Everytime I do the current draw tests they are very time consuming. However it is good for me to know what the current draw is on all the dash cameras. It is always easier to explain to customers when you are well informed.

    why set battery protection to 12v if you have 12.3?

    • @SafeDriveSolutions
      @SafeDriveSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you set it to 12 volts you will get longer to record on parking mode typically. You are more then welcome to set it to 12.3 volts. It is up to the user. I just recommend not going below 12 volts due to all the computers on newer vehicles

      Hello I just purchase the Viofo 229 and hardwired it today myself. For some reason, when it enter the parking mode with auto detection event , it recorded in my garage a few of 45s clips a few minutes apart even when there is no movement and no light, then it just turn off completely. Sometimes, it only recorded one 45s clip then turn off completely. I tried to switch to the 5frame/s mode and it just turn off after like 20 30s.
      I wired the battery wire to P/Outlet no.1 fuse (this one has constant power when the car is off when I check) and
      the ACC wire to the P/Outlet no.2 fuse (only power when turn on).
      I tried the battery protection with 12v, 12.2 and 12.4, they all have the same problem.
      I'm not sure if it is because I used P/Outlet no.1 for battery wire, but it did record a few clips of 45s each a couple of times. Should I switch to the Power seat fuse 30A?
      btw only the front dashcam is installed.

      @@Dark_side9999 There is a lot packed in here and I will try my best to answer you. 1. Parking mode will activate while parked with ignition on. So for instance if I pull to a coffee shop and I am sitting in my car for 10 minutes not moving at all. After 5 minutes the dash camera will go into parking mode automatically because the G sensor is sensing no movement. Not sure if those are the parking mode recordings you are seeing or not but that is an example of parking mode recording with no impact or motion to vehicle. 2. I do not know fuse locations of your vehicle and we also do not give any advice on where to go for power for liability reasons. But to give you some insight. Dash cameras draw less than 0.25 amps of current. So it draws next to nothing in current. What I would recommend doing is getting a mutlimeter and measuring 3 things. 1.) measure battery voltage on battery under the hood 12.0 volts or whatever number you get at battery. 2.) measure battery voltage where you got power for dash camera 3.) double check your connections because a lot of videos people tell everyone to butt connect the connections or ram the wire in and use tape to hold it in place which in my opinion is all wrong. It should still be a solid connection which I personally like to solder but that is me. If you find with your vehicle turned off that the battery voltage is lower than 12 volts good chance that is why you are not recording while parked. I hope that helps.
