Your videos are so well produced that I nearly did a spit-take when I saw that you only have 33k subs. You deserve so many more! and the fact that you write written articles as well is awesome, a practice that seems to be dying out in the modern day. Thanks for the info and will always come to you first for audio help :')

    Great demonstration!
What do you recommend to use as a noise gate and equalizer when using the SM7b. I need to post process recorded audio to remove computer fan noise, breath sounds, mouth clicks, etc. Of course I try to reduce it as much as possible, but do you have a hardware recommendation for reducing noise?
I also use Audio Hijack when live-streaming which works well, but it always brings up more fan noise from my macbook.
    Thanks for any advice!

I have an SM7B, and just got an Elgato Wave XLR - and this video is the main reason why. Thank you. Dumb question: I thought a main feature of the Wave XLR is that it didn't allow mics to clip, but you were demonstrating clipping.

    • @crownless236

Hey Kettner, I have a question for ya
So I went ahead and got a shure as well as the XLR wave, so far I'm pretty satisfied with the up in audio quality! However, I've found that for some reason while talking every now and then I get a weird pop/crackle sound from the microphone for a split second. It comes and goes very erratically and isn't constant, but happens enough to be noticeable. I've checked my cables, and also tried messing with buffer size on the interface itself, but none of these have fixed the issue. Would you have any clue what this is and how to fix it? Thanks!

@@kettnercreative I can imagine a cloudlifter wouldn’t hurt but like your vid proved it’s not needed… with one I’d imagine you’d be at a 2/10 or 3/10 on gain which would only give you plenty of clipping headroom and eliminate any “white noise” from running the amp to high…. Which didn’t seem like an issue from what you showed us

I hate the Elgato XLR. It has a very high noise floor once the gain is turned up past 50, even with no mic connected, and the audio monitoring is horrific!
You have to choose whether you want more mic monitoring volume to your headphones or more volume from the system audio. When the setting is in the middle you don't get enough of either one and you can't have both like you can on the GoXLR. With the GO XLR you can have a balanced level of microphone monitoring and system audio. I also have a Go XLR with a Shure SM7b and I can turn up the gain to the moon without introducing a bunch of noise.
This Wave XLR is crap compared to the GOXLR. The Go XLR does a much better job of controlling overall volume without noise.
On the Elgato Wave XLR its like the amp power is shared between the microphone and the headset.
I'm going to return the Wave XLR and purchase a Go XLR mini. I don't understand how this Wave XLR gets so much praise. There's literally not one bad review on it! I suppose that for the money it's ok, but once you have experienced a Go XLR it's tough not to notice the shortcomings of the Wave XLR.

Thank you for your video but I have a question. When you inquire about the setup to buy to operate an SM7B, there is very often the answer: a Cloudlifter amplifier and a Scarlett solo.
