    Someone with GM parents will never understand what everyone else means when they say that they have played chess for many years. I learned chess incorrectly when I was 8 from a kid my age who thought he remembered what was explained to him. We did not have the internet at home, school or the library, and no instructions with the board. Bishops started where knights should have, king and queen were swapped half the time, A1 was white half the time, castling and en-passant did not exist. I showed my brother, parents and other friends who never played, and I was beating everyone pretty easily. Fast forward 8 years and I am asked if I play by my girlfriends dad. I say yes, and that I'm pretty good, and that I expect to do well. He proceeds to set the pieces up in a way that I am unfamiliar with and then stomps my ass in like 12 moves. "I thought you played?". I am not the only one with this story! Dude Terrell wasn't lying, he just wasn't shown the whole game.

      @Daniel Ward I don't get what you are trying to say. He obviously wasn't a "complete beginner". He made some decent moves and had a pretty good understanding of what was happening until everything colapsed. Most people play monopoly incorrectly with the rules available in the box. But chess has that whole elitist thing that dribbles down to average players who tell you how much better than weak and sub-average players they are.

    • @johnwalker1058
      @johnwalker1058 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That's one possibility. Another one is basically my childhood where I knew the correct rules but I just didn't know much strategy. So I've known how to play chess since I was little, but I didn't learn about openings or basic tactics until I was in middle school, and I was mostly on and off being interested in chess. I didn't really ever get serious except for a couple months in eighth grade and then again during the later years of the pandemic.
      So for those wondering, yeah it's possible to have played or known how to play for a while, but not be that strong.

      A British guy called Bill Hartston once wrote a book "How to Cheat at Chess". One of the ploys he suggested was to get your cat to jump up on the board if you were losing and knock all the pieces away. He reckoned it didn't work with dogs as they were just as likely to destroy your own winning positions as your opponents'! All obviously tongue-in-cheek, but it's actually a great book with some real lol moments.

    Lol. Fun idea. Though your equipment is super sketchy. I feel like you'd have more interest with a better set up and clearer sign. Maybe people were like, "Who is this crazy person with a chess board?"

    A little off-topic, but did you know that your mom is an unintentional ASMR-tist? Her voice is so soothing it helps me sleep. When I saw her on your video and found out she's your mom a couple weeks ago I flipped out. So cool.
