11:00 ... unreal! Simply unreal insight from Jung channeled through Peterson: the self is everything you are across time, but you're only "here" at this point in time. Then, how can you maximize the self over time? Answer: through meaning, leading a meaningful life. You CAN be more than you are; let the "future you" guide your "present you" to make meaningful steps now. Just brilliant. Thank you, Professor Peterson!

distractos keep reading, you'll find out why. a couple comments have said he's making loose and vague connections between things, and how what he's saying doesn't make logical sense - it's one weak interpretation and his own opinion but he's presenting it as the truth. he says it with such confidence and authority that people follow him.

    • @smokyp3nguin

He just talks in circles and doesn't touch on the actual deeper meaning of anything. He'll talk himself into a corner, ask himself an interesting question, and say "Well here's something" and then go off on another tangent, then the video ends and you realize he didn't actually conclude a single train of thought. I'm more bored by his intellect than anything.

    I liked the following concepts:
🌻 Don't fill your spirit with garbage (that misguide you)
🌻 Just tell the truth (whatever the consequence is)
🌻 Challenge yourself (activate cells in your brain that would otherwise be dormant)
🌻 If you shrink from the world, the smaller you become, unsurprisingly. Move forward confidently and challenge yourself, embracing the possible failures. This'll ultimately benefit not only yourself but everyone around you.

My takeaway: ride the line between chaos and evil (living in the dao) as a way to improve yourself while staying in your domain and also have a goal, like selling books, but try really hard to distract from the fact that you’re doing that, while at the same time not being ashamed that you’re doing that.

    • @MrDokuritsu

I think a good interview question to people: ‘Explain a time when you had a goal, planned for it, and achieved it’. If the interviewee can explain some details of the plan and their discipline to stick to it, it tells you something about their character. That’s why Google hires some Olympic gold medalists.

But then one might argue that gambling is the most meaningful thing you can do, being constantly on the edge between order (winning) and chaos (losing). Since Peterson is not a professional gambler I'd think that this is not the case, but I would love to have someone take this interpretation into consideration and elaborate on it.

    • @Mebble

I'm depressed to the point where I stay in my room all day, 24/7, for as long as possible.
I believe the world is going to judge me, and I'm afraid of that.
But, I know I need to be independent, and build my life up so I can conquer that fear of judgement.
However, there's a part of my mind that says the opposite, that I'll never get anywhere, I'll fail over and over.
I'm so conflicted, that I do nothing, because I don't know which path to go down: to hide from my problems, or confront them.
That's what my purpose is, but I don't know how to handle it. I'm unskilled in almost everything, and I've tried to learn skills I'm interested in. But in the process, I realize that's not what I want to do, so I just stop.

Definitely would recommend Peterson’s “Twelve Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos” and really read it with your personal issues in mind.
Some recommendations to combat your anxiety:
1.) Have a routine and stick with it. Wake up at the same time and feed yourself. Get consistent sleep! Google Calendars is a really great tool for creating routines.
2.) Drink plenty of water and only drink sugary drinks on occasion. You’ll feel better physically and mentally staying hydrated. If you are able to, physical exercise is an excellent combatant against anxiety because of the chemicals involved with physical work. Having a healthy image of your physical self can greatly increase your confidence and reduce anxiety.
3.) Have clear cut goals that are well articulated. Write them down and think on them often. Make them achievable and have short term and long term goals.
4.) Realize that everything requires risk in life. If you don’t take risks, you won’t move towards your goal and even grow further from them. Put yourself in those situations that you are afraid of and take that risk so your brain can create new places to grow.
5.) Think about the alternative to not trying. You might be afraid to fail so you don’t try, but look at where you’ll be 5 years from now if you never try. Now think about where you could be if you did try. Is it better than where you’d be if you didn’t?
6.) Be determined to do the best at whatever it is you do. Even if you say that you have no skill and you are stuck working at McDonalds, make it the best McDonalds in town. You’ll begin to feel good about the little responsibility you have and it will grow into larger responsibility down the road. Responsibility is liberating.
7.) For sure sit down and think hard about what you want for yourself in the future. What is it that you REALLY want? How do you get there? Dwell on those questions and write down what you are looking for; what is “meaningful” to you. You’ll have a very hard time walking out of your room if you can’t determine why you want to or why you feel like you should.

    • @whatactuallyhappens9857
      @whatactuallyhappens9857 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Peterson likes to use bible verses occasionally to explain the world, so I'll try to do the same.
"If you judge others, you will be judged". Now I believe most people believe that it is God who is the one who would judge you. Fair enough. But I don't think that it's just God that is doing the judging, but it is also you doing the judging of yourself as well. And that makes sense. How you evaluate human beings doesn't just stop with everyone but you, it applies also to you subconsciously at least. Its inescapable.
So for the sake of your own health, do you think that the reason you are so worried about the world judging you is because you are equally as judgemental? Because most people dont feel like you, which is in fact a good thing, because it shows that there is a chance that you don't see the world accurately, and that the world might not be as bad as you think it is. Assuming that the world or you is fundamentally flawed so much that it makes things hopeless is extremely self defeating, and how certain are you that either of those negative scenarios are the case?
