The "Mirrormere" is a lake located near the eastern gate of Khazad-dum (Moria). Durin saw a reflectoin of the stars in Mirrormere, and they looked like a crown on his head, and because of the unusual circumstances (it was day when he gazed into the lake) he took it as a sign that in this place he should create his kingdom. This took place in the "elder days", before the First Age, during the Years of the Trees.

The song tells the tale of *Durin I The Deathless,* the first and oldest of Dwarf Kings during the Year of the Trees. He earned his name the Deathless due living extremely long for a Dwarven age (which was over 2000 years). In Tolkien's lore the Dwarves had a prophecy where Durin would be reincarnated 7 times as a great king. Whenever a dwarf would become a great king of Durin's Folk he would be named Durin. Good example would be *King Dain II Ironfoot's* Grandson *Durin VII* also known as *Durin The Last* for he was Durin's last reincarnation and last known king of the dwarves.

The saddest thing is that the Dwarves are dying out, because only 1/3 of the population is female and not all males marry and get children.
When I found out I was so mad at Tolkien. I still think he kinda forgot the dwarves or didn't think of them as important for his stories since there is so much background material missing or simply not elaborated. It always seems like his complete focus was on the Elves and Men (and maybe Hobbits later on), especially in the Silmarillion.
Dwarves need more love in movies/novels/video games.

Tolkien's dwarves are absolutely drenched in melancholy. Each bit of lore he crafted, every mention, every dwarf we meet, just has this heavy weight upon their backs. They all remember the stories of their golden days and all long for a return to those days of peace and prosperity. It leaves you sad, but its almost a comforting sadness.

    The line of durin.
Durin the deathless, durin VI, Náin 1, thráin 1, thorin 1, glóin, óin, Náin 2.
Now Náin the second had 2 sons.
    Dain 1 and Borin.
Dain 1 was the eldest so he was king , the eldest is always the king.
So borin was not king since he was the youngest of the two.
As dain 1 was king he had three sons ; Thrór, Frór and Grór.
Thrór was the eldest so he was king , he is also the grandfather to the guy in the middle of this song. The guy in the middle is called Thorin Oakenshield the second.
So Thrór also had a son named Thrain the second, who is thorin's father.
That's why they say thorin son of thrain son of thrór.
Thrain 2 had 3 children; thorin oakenshield, frerin and dis( who was a woman).
    Thorin oakenshield was the eldest.
Thorin oakenshield is actually called the last son of durin because he never had a wife or children.
So dis ( thorin's sister) had 2 sons; fili and kili.
Thorin calls them his sons but he is actually their uncle.
So if thorin dies fili and kili would be the successors, fili would be king because he is eldest.
But unfortunately, in the hobbit the battle of the five armies,
Thorin oakenshield tried to kill azog the defiler( he is the one who beheaded thrór, thorin's grandfather in the battle of moria) so thorin's target was azog because he killed his grandfather while he was seeing. Azog was a large pale orc. The reason for the battle of moria is because the kingdom erebor was destroyed by a dragon named smaug. So the dwarves flee the mountain erebor looking for a new home , thrór was the king by that time.
So thrór decided to take back moria because they never had a home and when the went to moria it was already occupied by orc and the leader azog. So they fought and actually took back moria but in the battle thrór was killed by azog and his son thrain 2 ran far away because of grief.
So the dwarves were leaderless because thór and thrain had vanished. But thorin oakenshield was still in the battle he fought and later all the dwarves acknowledged him as king. While in the battle thorin cut off azog's hand and thorin actually thought he died but he didn't die.
So in the battle of the five armies thorin and his squad; fili, kili, óin, glóin( father of gimli ), bifur , bofur , bombur, dwalin, balin, dori, ori and nori with Gandalf and bilbo went to take back erebor where by the dragon was still in the mountain. Surprisingly they managed to kick the dragon out of the mountain and it was killed. So thorin decided to kill azog, but his sisters children fili and kili were killed , his successors.
Fili was slain by azog infront of thorin's eyes.
And kili was slain by bolg, son of azog.
Azog was killed by thorin and thorin was killed by azog.
    They both pierced themselves.
Azog took the first one and thorin took the second one, but azog died first before thorin died.
So Dáin Ironfoot ( lord of the ironhills) who is also thorin's cousin became king after thorin died.
He loved thorin so much that he named his son also thorin.

Imagine this being sung by Gimli in the shadowed halls of fallen Moria as they traverse dark corridors and abandoned rooms visited only by demons, orcs and the bodies of the dwarves who died to protect their homes.
The dwarves we know from the movies are a scattered, melancholic people with a rich history. When we get to see them their mighty mountain homes have mostly fallen. Some by treachery (Sauron certainly didn't help) and others from disasters like the Balrog and Smaug.
The ones that are left still remember their golden age and desperately wish to reclaim their fallen ancestral redoubts, but the things that now make their homes there are strong and many expeditions were sent only to be snuffed out in short order.

Genuinely some of the finest choral singing you'll ever hear. Unbelievable harmonies, incredible melody and structure too. Tolkien wrote so much of his work in rhyming verse or in song because his greatest inspiration was the Viking sagas, which were passed down in oral tradition in mead halls by singers and storytellers. Thorin Oakenshield, the dwarf at the center of this picture is a direct descendant of Durin. The Hobbit films are all over the place in part because they tried to do too many different things with them but there are some great scenes

Oh no. The guy in The Hobbit is Thorin, son of Thrain. He's the King Under the Mountain (which is Erebor, The Lonely Mountain) and he's a DESCENDANT of Durin.
Durin is like the father of all dwarves really.
It's been a long time since I suggested this song and I don't know if there's someone else who suggested this to you. This is my favourite Clamavi de Profundus song (so far).
I personally liked and enjoyed the Hobbit trilogy and I've got no problem with it......
but that's before I watched the LotR. And then after watching the LotR trilogy and learning more about Middle Earth, I jump to the 'hate train' of LotR fans and die-hard Tolkien fans towards The Hobbit.
But as I rewatch the TH trilogy (I rewatched it many times before and I did rewatched it again last night), I did liked it and appreciate some things in it like Bilbo and Thorin's friendship, Smaug(the dragon) and the riddle (with Bilbo and Smeagol/Gollum) in the dark and some other things.
What I'm trying to say is give it a second try and see it for yourself....and yeah, you're not gonna like the movie if you'll constantly compare it to LotR. The Hobbit is based on a children's book anyway.

The dwarf in the center is Thorin II Oakenshield, who is a descendant of Durin. When he died at the Battle of the Five Armies, his cousin Dain Ironfoot from the Iron Hills took the throne as King Under the Mountain and it was prophesied that the last reincarnation of Durin, Durin the Seventh, would come from his line and would retake Moria. It's said that Dain's grandson was born Durin the Seventh in the Fourth Age of Middle Earth after the War of the Ring.
It would be known that that dwarf was the heir and Durin the Seventh when he looked into the Mirrormere, himself, and also saw the crown of seven stars as his ancestor, Durin the First, did.

The tune for this is not canon, Tolkien wrote the words but never put them to music, and this didn't make it into even the extended edition of the Peter Jackson movies. All we know about the canonical tune for this song is that it's described as "chant[ing] in a deep voice" when Gimli sings it for the Fellowship as they journey through Moria. That being said, Clamavi De Profundis have done an incredible job putting the Song of Durin to music and I think this is the closest we'll ever get to the music Tolkien would have wrote for it.

The world was young the mountains green no stain yet on the moon was seen no words were laid on stream or stone when Durin woke and walked alone.
That's speaking to the Awakening of Durin the deathless in Mount gundabad.
He named the nameless hills and dells he drank from yet untasted wells he stooped and looked in mirrormere and saw a crown of stars appear as gems upon a silver thread above the shadows of his head.
He finding the lake and seeing the crown of stars which tells him that this is where his Destined kingdom will be Khazad-dÛm.
That whole first stanza is just about the first Durin.
The world was fair the mountains tall in elder days before the fall of mighty Kings in Nargathrond and Gondlin who now beyond the Western seas have passed away the world was fair in Durin's day.
That was about the second durin and the end of the first age.
A king he was on carvin throne in many pillared Halls of stone with golden roof and silver floor and runes of power upon the door the light of sun and star and Moon in shining lamps of Crystal hewn undimmed by cloud or shade of night they're shown forever fair and bright.
This was about durin the third and beginning of the second age.
The hammer on the anvil smote the chisel clove and graver wrote there forged with blade and bound was hilt the delver mind the mason built their barrel Pearl and opal pale and metal wrought like fishes mail buckler corselet ax and sword and shining Spears were laid in horde.
Durin the 4th and the final battle against sauron in the last alliance.
Unwearied then we're Durin's folk beneath the mountains music woke the Harper's harped the minstrel sang and at the gates the trumpets rang.
The 5th Durin and the peace after the defeat of sauron and the Golden age of Khazad-dÛm.
The world is gray the mountains old the forges fire is ashin cold no harp is wrung no Hammer falls the darkness dwells in Durin's halls a shadow lies upon his tomb in moria in Khazad-dÛm
The Awakening of the balrog and the death of durin the 6th
but still the sunken Stars appear in dark and windless mirromere their lies his crown in water deep till durin wakes again from sleep.
The foretelling of durin the 7th and the final durin to rule over Khazad-dÛm

OK so....the song covers very quickly the history of moria from the awakening of Durin the first in Mount Gundabad in 1050 of the Year of Trees (so before the first age). Mirrormere is the still lake found by the western gate of Khazad-dum and when Durin saw the crown of stars, he took it as a sign and founded the great city of Khazad-dum. The city became so famous that the elves heard of it and so began a long friendship.
One of the most important things to know is that the name Durin is not one given lightly. It is a name reserved solely for the reincarnations of Durin himself. There is only one Durin alive at any time and that can be generations apart.
Now Nargothrond and Gondolin were two elven cities that got destroyed in the First Age during the war with Morgoth.
As for the darkness of Khazad-dum, one of the greatest ores of Durin's Folk was Mithril and they kept digging deeper and deeper until they woke a Balrog of Morgoth that was slumbering in the mountain. It proceeded to kill Durin VI and was know then as Durin's Bane. That is the shadow upon Durin's tomb.
The city consequently had to be evacuated and then orcs took over then there were multiple attempts to take back Moria, notably was the Battle of Azanulbizar were the Orc Azog was slain and the Durin's Bane was seen by Dain Ironfoot.
And so Moria was left to Durin's Bane and the orcs. Until Balin successfully took back Moria and was killed by a orc scout while he was by Mirrormere.
The song of Durin was sang by Gimli in the book while the fellowship was travelling through Moria and well.... We know the rest.

This is a tale from thousands of years before Thorin and the dwarves in the Hobbit. Durin is the 1st of the seven fathers of the dwarves from the 1st age of Middle Earth. The Hobbit is set in the third age.

I highly suggest you also listen to Colin John Rudd, who originally created this arrangement of Tolkien's song years before this band.
(The original was given with just the text in his books).
Sadly, because of a stroke a few years ago, he cannot create music such as this anymore, but in the link below, you find the cleanest version of this specific song from his channel (as part of a collection of songs from Tolkien's work). I time-stamped Durin's Song.

But, in these comments you have been fair and open to learning about what the song means and where you were inaccurate. That is great. It is good you were able to understand and appreciate the meaning behind the music. I feel your response here is needlessly aggressive just as the original comment was a bit insensative.
