My favourite part of the Isengard theme is the use of industry to create the music. When the 5/4 comes in the first time, they used the hammering of an anvil to create the "1-2-3 | 1-2" sound. Then after the high vocals when Gandalf speaks to the moth, they add the shaking of chainmail to the "1-2-3 | 1-2" as well. I think the part you described as low timpani, they may have used a metal sheet and scraped it so that it would bend to create those sounds. All Industry, all brilliant.

Damn, that was a whiplash, the last few videos have been Japanese and suddenly it's lord of the rings! Love both! Hopefully more film scores in the future?

I saw Fellowship live at an enormous theater (largest in the state) one time. I say "live" because it had a live orchestra doing the soundtrack and an 80 piece choir, it was the most amazing experience I've probably ever had. But I always had one singular gripe about it -- when they played Isengard, they only had a tire iron and like a hubcap to hit. So what was supposed to be this industrial-bell, deep resonant thing simulating the forging of steel weapons -- we just got this little wimpy TINK noise. Very out of place within all the deep brass fanfare

The last theme with the moving brass and percussion is actually Strider's theme and is sometimes mixed into Isengard's Theme and the Ringwraith's as it signifies the struggle between the noble race of men that Aragorn is apart of (Men of Numenor) and the Evil of Sauron and his corruption and destruction of Numenor and the the race of men into the Nazgul, Strider's theme is usually signified by the Quarter-note to 2 Eighth-notes, but the upbeat of two is tied, so it does not resolve, and this continues into the fight between good and evil, and much of it does not resolve throughout the movies until Aragorn is crowned King. Mordor, the Hobbits, and the Nazgul have the same rhythmic structure as leitmotifs and foreshadowing to each other of the same pattern of a full sixteenth note rhythm, missing the downbeat.

4:18 the way the Isengard theme slowly fades away and the "Natures Reclamation" theme builds up to that beautiful but gentle melody is heart wrenching for real. The treason of Isengard, and Sarumans last opportunity to turn back before the Ents casually disassemble everything he built there, and nature takes Isengard back in less than a day.

Since you really love the score for the LOTR trilogy, there's a phenomenal book called The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films. It's a thorough, deep dive analysis of the entire score, exploring every motif, every instrument, practically every line and note. I actually couldn't even follow everything I read lol. But as a musician and fan, you might enjoy it too.

At 3:23 you mentioned that you love asymmetrical tempos used with low brass (big, dark, evil) tones - and I can surely suggest you if you have the chance to listen to the brass enhanced version of the legendary Basil Poleduris composition created for Conan the Barbarian - Anvil of Crom (Enhanced Brass Emsemble Version). I love Howard Shore's compositions but I think he was re-interpreting some parts from Basil's composition. Great reaction - love the LOTR content as always xD

The crescendo you mentioned potentially between loose timpani/gong I think is a tam-tam (with no timpani) as opposed to a gong, but the growth to the sharp attack is impressive nonetheless. It's hard to crescendo and staccato a tam-tam like that. I could very well be wrong, but I'd love to know for sure!

Day 1 of asking Tony to react to Alien Ant Farm:
Could you please react to Alien Ant Farm? They have 4 LP's. I guess it would be way too long for one video. I don't know if you would even react to one full album. The first one (Anthology) has 13/14 songs, the second one (truANT) has 12 songs, the third one (3rd Draft/Up in the Attic) has 16 songs and their fourth one (Always and Forever) has 13 songs. You probably won't react to a full album so could you at least react to the few songs they uploaded on TH-cam? They are the only oned that have a video, so that's why there aren't more songs on their official TH-cam account.

Sceptic says: I still maintain that Howard Shore's music - for the most part - compares poorly to the Stephen Oliver music for the BBC adaptation of Lord Of The Rings.
Shore tended towards "generic movie cues" and "generic Celtic-ness", whereas Oliver's score had more music that stands apart from the series. (It helps that, in keeping with Tolkien's cultural-orientation. he sounds like he was working from a vague idea of what Ralph Vaughan Williams was).
Take this for instance th-cam.com/video/HL-TpGJoucQ/w-d-xo.html (in the bridges of the song there's a deadly key-change)
Or the sequence starting here th-cam.com/video/HL-TpGJoucQ/w-d-xo.html
