      I ordered a pad today because of those issues. Does it help? I constantly mess up diagonals and especially double buttons like 1+2 and 3+4. So hard to time. I keep accidentally getting 2, 1+2 instead of 1+2 only, and the combo fails. Does it help?

    I do agree that pad is advantageous. I love using the PS2 controller and PS3 controller for fighting games. The only problem is in the long run depending on your play style your thumb will start to blister. Arcade may take a while to learn, but once you learn it. You'll probably never want to go back although you can.

    Moral of the story. Play with what you want until you are great, then challenge yourself with the other option so you can be flexible in any given situation. Good informed video. Most people think money spent = automatically better when it's reall not the case. I also think the stick has higher fun factor if you grew up playing arcade games. The feel of the stick and tapping buttons can enjoyable in it's own way.

  • @Stickbrush
    @Stickbrush 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    A thing I see most comfortable about sticks is certain inputs. 1+4 and 2+3 are easier to do in a stick than in a pad. Also, pads can be grabbed in two ways to get certain inputs easier. You can grab it the normal way (using your thumb for inputs), which allows super-easy 1+3 and 2+4. And you can grab it with the claw (using your index and middle finger for inputs, leaving your ring finger for triggers), which allows easier 1+2 and 3+4, as well as quick 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 or 3-4-3-4-3-4-3-4-3-4.

    • @alexhardline2208
      @alexhardline2208 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Wrong.
      SonicFox won a shitton of tourneys with regular pads, and he still does. The skill comes from reflexes, the mindgame, etc.; the controller you use has nothing to do with that (there's a dude who won a Canadian cup on Guilty Gear Xrd using a steering wheel, so basically anything is possible as long as there's enough buttons).
      It's just whatever you're more comfortable with that's gonna help you win.
      Now I'd agree it kinda depends on the game :
      I've always preferred playing Tekken on a regular controller because I grew up playing the PSP versions of Dark Resurrection and Tekken 6, same for SoulCalibur.
      But when it comes to 2D fighting games, I mostly use arcade sticks unless I really just want to have fun with casual friends. Now, just because I'm used to playing Street Fighter with an arcade stick doesn't mean I'm bad with a regular controller either (I can do combos on SSFIV on 3DS), but suddenly switching to a different controller can feel very weird (you should see that footage of Daigo discovering the regular controller, it's hilarious).
      So any controller will do as long as it gives you the proper tools to play, even if it wasn't made for competitive fighting games at first.
      If you want a good deal between pads and sticks, get a 40$ Hori fightpad. They're really good and they're useful for people who are uncomfortable with sticks but give an excellent accuracy anyway.

    Don't overthink about what controller you should use, as long as you just want to be a decent/good/very good or even top player and have fun, any controller is fine. If you have the opportunity, try everything and choose what suits you the best. But really, don't think that buying an expensive arcade stick will suddenly make you a better player.

    For games with multiple button moves like FADC and Ultras in SFIV or Roman Cancels and FDC in Guilty Gear, sticks offer inherent advantages because you have more fingers to press buttons with as opposed to just your thumb and possibly some trigger fingers.
    Negative edge is also much harder to pull off on pads. Since in some cases like in Guilty Gear's Zato / Eddie, you press other attacks before you release another button for the negative edge attack. Which means you hold one finger over the negative edge and press other buttons while its held. You can't easily do that on pad unless you get creative with the triggers.

    • @aspreedacore
      @aspreedacore 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the PC versions of SF you can set the playstations L3 and R3 buttons to focus attacks, this makes FADCing A LOT easier. I personally feel you only need a stick for SF for pianoing, an plinking.

      No it is not unless you have very good execution hitting 2 or more buttons at the same time will always be harder then hitting one button. Thats why pros use MACROS and yes they use MACROS look up their button configurations, though its never for focus attacks xd.

    • @NingamerX
      @NingamerX 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      aspreedacore those 2 buttons are side by side... when you combo the ex focus cancel is way easier pressing triangle+square

    • @aspreedacore
      @aspreedacore 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      you still have to press them at the same time, if you dont press them exactly at the same time your screwed... one button vs a chance to mess up with hitting 2 buttons? Anyway I digress do what works for you, if you can consistently hit 2 buttons nothing is stopping you, but for those of us who are afraid of dropping an FADC we MACRO that lol.

    I recommend playing with your index and long finger on the right hand, on the gamepad, kind of like on a arcade stick.
    I started with Tekken 3 and I remember adopting this style fairly quickly. I didn't learn it from anyone, it just made sense to me and certain multibutton combos were a lot easier. Initially I remember a increased error rate with the easy combinations, like the basic throws. But it didn't take me long to sync my fingers, and this is something that arcade stick users have to deal with too. Really for anyone who is serious enough to watch this video, using this style is definately worth it, especially if you're fairly new to the game. For players who are very experienced it might not be worth it to relearn the muscle memory, and these days I know you have options in adding multi-button combinations to the shoulder buttons.

    Aris did actually go to Japan, because he won the US qualifier to go to SBO in 2010 for Tekken. I think he's seen a few tournaments :P Also, he plays on stick. When he talks about more top players in the US and Europe playing on pad, he's talking specifically about Tekken.

    Great vid. The major reason why I switched from pad to stick on ALL fighting games was the universality of the arcade stick. Like you said, not being able to play on what you're used to holds you back and now, since I've made the switch, it's not an issue for me to play on PS3, 360 or Arcade.
    Thanks, crappy Xbox 360 d-pad! I owe it all to you.

    personally.
    im repeating: personally*
    i find stick movement easier, because strictly moving with my left thumb is very taxing for me. the ability to use more fingers in any leftward direction, and the larger range of motion just helps me out when I'm playing the Mishimas, or other characters focused on spacing and JF.
    Never really been a fan of the pad honestly, even since i broke in my back button when I couldn't play the game and only knew to block

    if you are a pad player and u are planning to change to stick user, always remember that its really hard at first to switch pad to stick. its like ur right handed and changing to left handed. i am a pad player before and switch to stick and its hard. my tip for you if you are a tekken player and you are switching to stick, focus first on movement. like how you gonna execute a backdash perfectly something like that.

    Great vid i agree 100%! I have been a pad player sense mortal kombat 2 and x-men cota days. But i know the stick is basically the last stage to mastering the game. The stick pretty much set me back to my kid years. Being its so sensitive and proficient but im used to mashing my way to combos. And its been working as well as hurting and hindering. The goal is to be as accurate as possible im now learning that putting my time in the stick.

  • @KindOldRaven
    @KindOldRaven 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It's kinda funny because playing pad will ruin my thumb joints in like an hour or two. Meanwhile on stick, as I use arm, wrist or even fingers depending on what move I'm doing, it feels so much less taxing ;p It literally feels like thumb for everything vs spreading the load over multiple different joints and muscles for me. Having said that, a hitbox or keyboard is still in general the most sustainable for me. Probably because I'm already used to typing a *lot* and can do so without much tension at all. So for me it's like Hitbox> keyboard/arcade stick>>pad from most comfortable to least comfortable.

    Just came across this and I agree with the left hand vs the right hand argument. I'm much better with my left hand on a pad and my right with the buttons on the stick. Using an original stick device, I attached a left hand grip with dpad in place of the removad stick. It's a weird looking contraption, but I'm faster overall with it than either of the originals.

    The sound argument is obviously a factor, you forgot to mention how humans are able to react to audible stimulus much faster than visual stimulus; roughly .12s versus .16s, 4 hundreths, AND what's even bigger is that in all games there's a input delay of at least 1 frame, or 1/60th, not mention that most attacks have intentional extra delay built into them before any sprite is changed, or hit boxes are changed, 2/60th to 4/60th about. so in all you're roughly 1/10th of second sooner input to react to, which is absolutely HUGE, most attacks have active hit boxes with than time.
    Why hasn't one made system that's a pad for left and arcade style buttons for right? or sound dampened arcade buttons, like on many keyboards? (and dampen the surface next to and below the buttons with some type of polymer)
    I should make my own peripheral company I swear, There's not many Pro Gamers that are also mechanical engineers, for gamers by gamer(s) :D

    In my opinion, even though I don't play tekken, a stick is much better if you have self doubt. With a stick you feel when you press a direction/button, you have a more tactile feedback and can tell when your holding a direction. When I'm using a pad and playing a game like street fighter, I can't tell sometimes if I'm holding downback/forward, or if I even am doing an input for a shroyuken or a haduken, I can know that it is going to come out. I also feel that it comes out a lot more consistently. In my opinion, the only time that pad has an advantage, is if you play a grapple character with fc inputs(Ex. Zangief hagar etc.).

    The pad can get a delay unless it is a tournament using a console, if it is, the it's up to the player to use Stick or Pad.
    Also: The noise the stick makes DOES matter. See tournament videos and pay attention when the new two players sit down and set the controls; on Stick players, it's common to see a few setting up a button as "No Function" (term given by Street Fighter) This is done so that they press the "blank" button to confuse the other player into a reaction and see what they would do.

    You're not limiting yourself by playing on a pad, just because the players in Korea/Japan play in arcades. That's something the tournament organizers have to think about. If pad ports are laggy, then consider using home versions. If there's an error on home version, talk to Namco. Being forced to use stick because thats what other countries use is similar the same as picking a certain character because thats the most popular character in that country.

    I play USF4 on keybaord , and I've tried pad and Fight sticks , and I think pad isn't meant for fighting games , sticks just feel natural for fighting games , and it's extremely hard to push combination of button on pad , and while doing movement with your left thumb , it's extremely hard to use the left triggers at the same time..oh and pressing 1+4 and 2+3 is next to impossible on Pad , you need to make separate binding for them , which means you need to bind at least one button to left triggers that i difficult to use while doing movement.
    On Fight sticks it's not an issue , you can press any number of buttons you want while doing movement which is very important.
    Also the reactions come out faster on sticks naturally , while you need to practice that on pad.
    Since I'm a Keyboard player , I have an advantage over stick and pad , I follow the same layout as stick , that is 4,5,6 = Punches and 1,2,3 = kicks and WASD for movement , I can dash fast , press combinations even better than stick cause on keyboard buttons are closer to each other , I can use 1 finger to press 2 buttons , for example 4+1 , which is a throw. in tekken doing an EWGF is much easier with keyboard than with stick and pad from both sides , thought I've only played tekken6 on keyboard with PPSSPP emulator , for the rest of my life I've played tekken on Arcades on a stick.

    Those are all valid points, I for example can only play on an Arcadestick because when I have to play Beat'em Ups on a controller I get so much pain in my hands. My left thumb starts to hurt and the inside of my right hand where the thumb muscle goes is very cramped up and painful. After I started playing on an Arcadestick I didn't had this problems and was so much better at executing different moves without much difficulty (for example 10 hit combo of Josie, learned within 5-10 minutes).

    What do you do?
    A fight stick is wonderful, but you have to be willing to drop the cash on a quality stick. Thus, we end up with pad, get accustomed to it, and then tend to get wrecked.

    I think one last thing to consider in this argument is the whole corded vs wireless aspect. Wireless has yet to be able to match the response speed of a direct connection so the most precise execution may be harder to accomplish on a pad since the majority of them are wireless/bluetooth. Personally when I play SF4 or mvc3 on pad at home(I don't have an arcade stick yet) I feel like I miss inputs here and there because of the slight delayed response.

      I can see the merit of this setup, you're dedicating a separate finger to each attack buttons where as the default setup uses only the thumb.

    I disagree that pad wins on movement. I played pad for 2 years competitively and I can't tell you how many times I'd do inputs that I didn't wanna do. And that's because I'm only using my thumb for every movement input. Stick has a lot more control and precision but requires more effort. Instead of just using your thumb, it's more like drawing with a pencil and having that control. I think control and precision is key here, though, because it enables you to be more consistent, if that makes sense. Pad is advantageous in that it's easier to pick up. But stick is more advantageous in being consistent, precise, and clean.

    Yo so I know this video is old as fuck and I'm sure people have already mentioned this before, but if you're like me and youtube recommended this to you for some reason and you're deciding whether or not to play on stick, there is something else to consider.
    When I picked up Guilty Gear for the first time, I didn't own a stick, just an XBox controller plugged into my PC. I played that and grinded out training mode for many hours at a time and then my hands would get sore from all the DP motions and specific button combinations. So I started taking breaks and over time I'd have to take more and more breaks in smaller sessions. My hands were just getting fucked up from trying to play on pad for longer and more consistent stretches. Weak joints run in my family, so that is definitely a factor with my situation. I figured I was invested enough and wanted to pick up a stick, and I also figured if I could ease up the pressure on my thumbs I wouldn't feel so shitty. After all, your fingers are pretty weak in comparison to your wrists. I picked up my stick and there was an IMMEDIATE difference in my hands. Sure I was fucking up a lot in game because the motions were so foreign to me but my hands were perfectly fine. I could play for 12 hours straight if I ever wanted to and my hands wouldn't get fatigued at all. If you are like me and play for long stretches, seriously consider picking up a stick. Besides, it's a lot more satisfying to combo on arcade parts, I promise.

For my left hand which controls the D-pad, i use the bare edge of my thumb to scrape the arrows for faster movements like SS cancelling. For Tekken at least this is okay because its very linient, allowing you to slide from one arrow to another.

    1: I think it's more fun. Remember that word? Fun.
    2: It's universal, if you know how to play on a stick, you can play on a stick on any platform/the arcade. You don't need to adapt to different controls every time.
    3: I like to mod and personalize my stuff, obviously it has no effect on gameplay but still.

    Story of the day: Play on Analog. Best of both worlds.
    Easier to wave dash with, but also gets you in and out of footsie range.
    All you need to do is practice the double-back and double-forward motion and you'll be all set.

    As a person who spent a lot of time in the arcades: I've always hated the feel of a fight stick.

    I think also if you play on pad you are taking away valuable opportunities from yourself that are exclusive to an arcade cabinate like playing a location test for ttt2. If you play on pad then you wont be able to play your best and execute the things you want to. All in all if you play on pad and only pad i think its worth learning stick for those opportunities like playing the best or a test for a fighting game.

    you can just frame on a pad by using shoulder shortcuts than override the input, my 3+4 is binded to R2
    so for example yoshi mid mid, is 3, 4 jf, you can do X = 3, than press R2, instantly,

    i use a pad, and am proud of it. My thumb pressing rapidly on a pad can be as dexterous as an entire hand tapping on a stick. With less distance to cover, and less muscle memory to learn, i think it is a little bit more ergonomic as well. But dont get me wrong, arcade sticks are badass, and i wish i could use one. Each to their own, i guess. great video!
