Just bought the Randall RG3003H online, about an hour ago. Only bought it because it was $250 in mint condition. Can't wait, should be here the end of this coming week; I'll post videos once it's in. Wanted it a while back, when someone was selling a Mike Fortin modified 1503H but it was $800. After seeing this video, it made sense to buy it for $250. What's $250!?! That's nothing! You can't find incredible heads like this for two and a half!
LoerdNoerd Sure, but the phase cut is very specific, sounds like there was an extra cut on the 57 because on the rest of the spectrum i hear no cutting, only the 2 sounds together.
You can do a little experiment for yourself: record a riff, copy the track and start shifting it in time (which will cause phasing to happen, just like between microphones in different positions / distances to the speaker). You will hear (especially when you flip phase one of the tracks to only hear the difference, i.e. what is cut) that at very small delays (4-10 ms), the high frequencies will vanish first before cuts become apparent in the lower, musically more useful registers. You can achieve the same effect during recording by lining up two SM57's at an 45° angle. It's called the Fredman technique and it's a pretty popular way to clean up you guitars already during recording stage. tldr: phasing under certain conditions will affect high frequencies first and can therefore be exploited effectively to generate interesting, low-fizz guitar tones.
Addendum: I realize of course that the whole phasing thing becomes infinitely more complex when you use two different mics. But the above concepts apply nonetheless.
I own an Rg1003h and the cleans are acutally pretty cool I think. Stays very clear all the way pretty much. There's only one thing rediculously bad about the RG's and it's the reverb but since it has an fx loop not really much of a problem I think definately cool amps.
@@maffooo2040 if you crank it all the way you still won't notice it really. It barely does anything really. The Reverb sucks on my rg 1003h but the amp isn't bad otherwise. I think it is a great amplifier for the money.
@@maffooo2040 wasn't a deal breaker for me either but it's fair to state that the Reverb knob on this amp( at least the 100 watt version) is a joke. Anyway I really enjoy the amp with a captor x at the moment and you will probably too.
+Ryan Day I love it man. I play it through a tc electronic bass 2x12 cab. I know that may sound strange, but to my ears it sounds great. The cab makes up for the lack of warmth you get from a solid state head I think. But again, it's just to my ears. Maybe it's just the low end from the bass cab. But I like it a lot, it's just a bedroom amp for me, if you got a decent cab to play it through I'm sure you will love it! It's tough as nails, a great value, and an American company, hope that helps, good luck!
Can you do a Will it chug or an updated video with one of these? They went from $300 originally up to $800 almost now would love to hear your updated opinion!
Damn, I knew I could trust Ola to drop the full range of face melting tone .. adding that Fortin grind pedal made it absolutely out of control savage .. feeling quite impressed with Randall heads
I like tube preamp and solid-state power sections. I have gotten some great sounds that way. I like stereo tube amps, but hate the tube repair costs...
I Own the RG1003 head and its ok but it is just ok compared to valve heads. I have found that high output pickups on mine make it very hard to get a nice clean sound on the clean channel at louder volumes as it tends to clip so I have to back off the volume a tad on the guitar to resolve the clipping. I can say the RG line of speaker cabs are also just ok. And this head would probably benefit greatly from better speakers thus why Ola probably used the cab he used instead. But overall for the price of the amp and matching cab its a great rig to take to gigs as solid state tends to take the beating of traveling better then valves. Also the build quality of the head and the cab is done very well. Randall makes great stuff
Trust me, it is really aggressive and i never turned the master volume more than the minimum. Once i got my amp and tested it, i was like... What i´ve done? In a good way, because there is no way i can play it without disturbing the neighboors, so i had to purchase a set of headphones. It is pretty aggressive with a lot of gain. As far as solid state amps concern, i think this is as best as it gets. Choose a nice cab to plug into. Remember the cab you choose is really important. And of course, the mic is also really important. If you´re looking at a Solid State aggressive amp, my opinion, this one is a really angry amp
Thank you Ola. I can finally buy this head with no worries. You are the man. Randall is the shit. And you play well! What cab do you recommend for home recording using this amp? I'm going for the raw Dimebag tone. I was also curious about your input on Randall's isolation cabs for recording with neighbors! Cheers
The Solid state amps from Peavey that I’ve tried also sound super good! My favorite one is the Peavey Special 120W in Tube Wattage and it can do any style you need it to. But I’m also gonna have to cop this Randall!
I have one of these and it's a great amp really! If you want to go the solid state route I highly recommend. My one complaint is the shared EQ. It would be way better for channel 1 at least to have its own eq. Overall I definitely recommend!
So I’m just now noticing this after watching this video once again and remembering how the mid scoop button responded on my Randall RG80 combo. Say your mid knob is at 11:00. If you press the mid scoop button and turn the midrange to around 1:00, does anybody notice that the mid scoop knob changes the character of the amp? It’s kinda sounds like it’s doing that here as well as when I messed around with my combo amp, but I can’t say for sure.
This and a 2x12 are what I'm getting since I have a limited budget right now. And cause I can't keep using a Code 50, it's not my type of amp. I want an FX loop and separate channels I can footswitch as well as the look of a some what real rig.
My orange 412 cab is 16 ohms only. I’m pretty sure this head says minimum load of 4 ohm would it work and if so would it take away slot of volume?? I love you’re vids! Thanks
Very impressive the sound you get with that amp! Is it possible with the RG1503 amp to use a Gizmo MIDI Amplifier Controller and a Randall midi footswitch RF4, just like you did back in your 2014 live rig video, to change channels and activate/deactivate a delay I would plug in effect loop using midi? I'd like to use a delay for my leads, on the channel 3, and use the channel 2 for rhythm without effect loop activated and change channels only with one action. Thank you!
Hey Ola, can you demo the Randall Rg13 (pedal/amplifier). Ive own that pedal, its an awesome pedal! But I see no one using it besides me. Mehh. Hope u can demo it & abuse it. Thanks Ola.
This amp is so affordable and it’s astonishing how good it is. I’m going to trade in my Orange TH30 for one because the TH30 lacks the tightness I want for crushing metal tones, this amp sounds like it will do what I need
A question about this great amp. Since it isn’t a midi amp, how can I control its 3 channel with a midi switcher, and without its own footswitch? I know that stuff like the MiniAmp Gizmo could be useful but it seems out of market. Please help!
One question Ola, is it possible or have you ever tried amp slaving two different types of amps? Like for example a solid state amp slaved to an all tube amp or vice versa. Could you please make a walkthrough? Thank you and you really made the amp its justice. Perfect!
I know you are a Randall sponsor but you should try out the orange cr120 head it's a solid state and I would love to see it in a really heavy tone video
So I bought one of these about a year ago, I love Channel 3 and Channel 1 but channel 2 almost sounds like a fuzz pedal. Very muddy. Anybody else experience this?
I cannot find just the head by itself anywhere. Only thing I'm finding is the 2x12 combo. I just want the head for now then the 4x12 cab later. Any one help me?
Actually looking for a new halfstack. Since I traded a cheap Marshall halstack for the les paul lol . So went from 100 watts with a generic Jackson dinky and a low level Marshall , to a 27 year old Gibson and a 30 cheap Marshall , so need a new amp.
Would this amp be considered a bright amp? Asking cause I’m thinking of buying one and I have an Egnater Tourmaster 4x12 which is super bright and I don’t wanna go overboard on the treble.
Ola Sir My new Rocking Metal Guy do you prefer the Randall RG1503 or the Randall RG1003 or the Randall Rh200sc reason I'm asking is I found the RG1003 and Rh200sc close to my area and I wanna buy one of them to explore my tone I'm playing through a Crate GLX1200h solid state head at the moment and it chugs but I searching for that DIMEBAG tone and you inspire me im trying get out of this depression from being injured and going through surgeries and I'm gonna turn to music for inspiration as well being inspired by you my friend sorry for all the questions but your my new Guitar hero now and you push me to get the up and get out this depression and play thanks for your videos my metal brother stay safe in this mad world we live in 🤘😎🤘❤️
It doesnt matter. Buy the one thats cheaper or available. I've tried the RG80 combo (80 watts obviously) and it's loud as hell. You won't have problems taking that RG1003 to a gig.
Very very damn good demo. Only issue is this head doesn't have dedicated channel controls...(those would probably cost a ton more) otherwise, this is solid state greatness.
I'm trying do decide between this head and the crate gx130 head. I'm looking to see which has a better metal/high gain tone. So please reply with what you think would be the better choice.
Ola Englund, please help me out. I have the same amp head, but i don´t know which speakers and cab to use. It´s a 4 ohm head with 150 watts, so which speakers can i use? The hesu 2x12 only brings 2 speakers with 60 watt each, how do you match the 150 watts amp head?
Did it seem to get slightly quieter with both mics? I have always had good results with solid state. Once used a Zoom 9150 into a Peavey Special 130 and everyone was blown away with the tone. Good video.
I know that I am REALLY late to this question, but I'll still answer. The reason why the boost pedal doesn't have a huge impact is due to the fact that this amp is a full solid state amp with no tubes. A boost pedal (as the name suggests) serves the purpose of boosting the signal and hitting the preamp harder. Tubes have a more linear curve of distortion, behave way more organic and react to subtle changes. When boosting with a boost pedal the tubes will be pushed to the limit which usually won't be achieved without one because of the distortion-behavior of tubes. Transistors on the other hand don't act so natural and reactive like tubes. The distortion-curve shows, that they abruptly hit the limit (maximum distortion) and do so with less "effort" (it's easier to get them to their limit). So boosting the signal in order to push transistors to the limit won't really make a big difference on most solid state amps. Those characteristics make tube amps generally more dynamic and better sounding (which doesn't mean that there aren't any good solid state amps).
Do you guys it worth the money ? Of course the head really sounds awesome but how good is it compared to 1000$ ones ? Will the difference be noticable ?
What cab should I use with this amp? Besides the Randall rg212 because It's barely impossible to get one where I live and, also I'm on a budget so I would like to get an affordable one. Any suggestions?
using top end mics & high tech tweeks matching equiptment etc usually always gives good results. ....... How would THAT amp sound here at my hoiuse just plugging my guitar with dimarzio x2n plugged straight into the amp, no effects no enhancers, nothing just a cord & guitar & a pick into a 2x12 cabinet???????
Guys when i buy just the head, do i need headphones to hear the sounds or what? And can i use the head with any other Randall head? if not which is the best?
it is not!!! I have owned both and the RG80 just wasn't it man i could NOT get it to sound like my RG100, now a lotof that could be that the RG80's speaker needs a lot to be broken in but idk man it didn't sound right through my broken in cabs
To me Randall will always embody that awesome Dimebag tone.
This is actually way better sounding than a Dimebag amp would ever sound
Nofarewell ehh I wouldn’t go that far
@@Nofarewell . You lost his point.
@@metallion0738 that might happen :)
Better sounding then some tube amps.
Sounds beast
The fact that you play guitar and watch Ola's videos makes me so happy
yep

I like how you played mostly Pantera riffs. That iconic Dimebag
was only one riff the one of A new level
2:49 I got nostalgia goosebumps, like dime himself strummed that beautiful chord and smiled.
Loving the dual mic setup
Wow. Now i like solid state amps
+KillingerDOOM not really. You know amt pedals? These fet solid states are actually small tubes. They function almost typical as a valve tube.
" They function almost typical as a valve tube."
Almost, lol... on paper.
That's why Ola uses E906 to compensate terrible highs.
what's the difference between FET and MOSFET?
Randall doesn't use that technology. AMT has that patented
e906 is one of the more treble heavy mics. you don't use that compensate highs. to do that you use ribbon

A new level!!!!!!!!
I bought this head a few months ago because it was so damn cheap...$400 canadian. Add a tube screamer and 7 band EQ and it sounds explosive...so good
This thing sounds brutal!
Do you cancel the 57 harshness with an eq or by phasing it with the E906?
Blending them
... which, most likely, boils down to a phasing thing. :)
LoerdNoerd

I have always had good results with solid state. Once used a Zoom 9150 into a Peavey Special 130 and everyone was blown away with the tone. Good video.
sounds great! is it Fortin Grind pedal on the top of an amp?
So other than the end part with the grind OD pedal...this was all straight through the amp without effects?
You hit the Fortin Grind pedal around 3:00 & and I heard Zero difference? why?
Does anyone know how the combo version of this amp is compared to just the head?
Do you guys it worth the money ?
Of course the head really sounds awesome but how good is
it compared to 1000$ ones ? Will the difference be noticable ?
Greate tone! Please, Is this possible to download audo track in WAV?
What cab should I use with this amp? Besides the Randall rg212 because It's barely impossible to get one where I live and,

Where can I get one of those fortin grind pedals?
using top end mics & high tech tweeks matching equiptment etc usually always gives good results.
Does anybody know if the combo amp version of this is any good?
it is not!!! I have owned both and the RG80 just wasn't it man i could NOT get it to sound like my RG100, now a lotof that could be that the RG80's speaker needs a lot to be broken in but idk man it didn't sound right through my broken in cabs
