@@allboutthemojo man that’s hard to explain without giving you a mini class on tube compression, basically a volume pedal won’t do what an attenuator will do. And attenuation isn’t just turning the volume down it’s sort of like putting ankle weights on for weight training, the tubes are still doing work you’re just not going as loud as normal with attenuation. Tubes need to be pushed to get a good warm distortion and you can’t get a tube hit without cranking the volume.

@1988 I bought the solid state version of that exact amp and one 4 X12 speaker enclosure with Jaguar speakers from Stryper's salesman Kevin, at Alta Loma Music, in Alta Loma, California. Mine had (literal) carpeted covering (not vinyl) for the cab and the chassis head, a rack mount version, was installed in a smaller, carpeted enclosure. It served me well until I sold it to Music-Go-Round in Kansas City @2000, because I went back to Marshall tube amps. Randall are a great guitar amp for "Metal".
What's crazy, is how different this sounds! The solid state version is so much tighter and nastier. The tube RGT has that tube flub and sag. Wow! This is amazing.

Thank you for doing a video on my favorite amp. I own two (87 and 89). I need to add an 88 (the one in the video). A few random thoughts about the amp. Nothing wrong with the Pull Sustain. It's meant to drop the volume. It is my favorite setting. Feels to me like a modded marshall and makes the volume more controllable. The preamp is tube. The preamp uses 4 12AX7's and an 12AT7 for the reverb circuit. As for comparing tone to the RG 100 es...I bought the Rg in 1987 and the guy at the store had me try the RGT. It was twice the cost. I came back 2 weeks later and traded the RG back in for the RGT. I got better tone and gain going straight in. My buddies that had the RG had to use a bunch of pedals to to eek out a decent sound. Oh and the clean channel... so warm. There's more to tell but I'll stop. Takk Ola!

Ola I’m an old metal head going way back to early Priest (I’m 54) and you my friend are a breath of fresh air. When Dime was murdered I thought it’s was over for the well written metal song. Too often guys are using the latest fad 28 string whatever and tuning down just to tune down and it loses something in the mix. Dime had a way to make a song heavy tuned to D or just standard E using 9-42’s!!! You’ve got a lot of that in you, your right hand is a metronome from hell but still done in a very musical way. Thanks for keeping Dimes memory alive and thanks for these awesome and very entertaining vids. God bless.
I have a Randall Thrasher 120W. It was mislabeled as the 50W, so I got it for about $700. I’ve tried to compare it to 5150’s, Rectifiers, and various other amps. Out of all the amps, I’ve loved the coloring the Thrasher has, as well as how versatile the amp is. Absolutely love the amp.
That's awesome I wouldn't mind have that also lol. Randall rules. I want a RG3003H3 head. The balls on Randall is amazing. I'd take Randal over Mesa now.
I was treasure hunting at pawn shops and found the head amp!!! And bought it for $90 US dlls !!!, Bought a 4x10 Hartke for another $90, sounds and rumbles awesome! Very loud and nice, specially for the price, that was a lucky day. I even connected an oldl digitech rp2000, the clean, chorus and extra distortion form the digitech sounds really nice and brutal. Y'all have fun and keep rockin.
Aha! The Randall fullstack from my local music store. Does the old price tag still say 4900,- (probably still Deutsche Mark, not Euros) or something?;)
I'm learning what really matters for high gain amps is EQ before the amp and EQ in the FX loop. You can make just about any high gain amp sound great with proper EQ. Something I should have learned from Dime but didn't, I kept thinking "I need this exact amp with these settings" I've since learned the troof

Scored one of these 10 years ago for $300. Older version with carpet instead of tolex. The real secret to boosting it is use an EQ pedal instead of an overdrive, sounds so much better. Insanely versatile too, roll the red channel down to 2 or 3 gain and it'll play AC/DC and Zeppelin all day long
I got my Randall 4x12 slant front with Jaguars over 30 years ago and will never part with it. They have more bottom end than any cabinet I've ever played through, before or since. Enjoy it, sir!!🤘
Was fun to see some older gear with great tone; especially since most hibryd rigs seem to keep the pre amp tubes and replace the power amp stage with solid state. Found this exact amp at my local guitar shop for $400 US back in 1999. Best amp I've ever owned. All original tubes and it sounds fantastic. I'd have to be offered a pretty penny to get rid of this head.

He played everything on that song and sings on it (whoa yaaaaaaaaaay). In the liner notes it said "dimebag Darrell appears courtesy of his credit cards" haha
It actually is a mostly tube driven amp except for the reverb section which utilizes operational amplifiers. The volume drop is due to a simple clipping stage with zener diodes to achieve clipping distortion. I had the same amplifier with the same grey minitile tolex. The thing was loud as hell but no distortion unless I would engage the clipping stage, which left me with no loudness. And I did not turn into Dimebag for reasons unknown.
