  • Philadelphia slapped a tax on soda and promised to spend the money on education. 5 years later, here’s what happened.

    ________________
    Want a soda?
You’ll pay more for it in Philadelphia, because a few years ago Philly politicians voted to tax artificially sweetened beverages.
They said it would discourage people from drinking unhealthy soda.
Soda sales did drop. Liquor sales rose!
The politicians promised the tax would fund early childhood education.
In my new video, I explain what Philly politicians really did with the money.

The United States died when they allowed tax to be collected from paychecks automatically. This eliminated the worker writing a check every quarter and going "Wtf am I paying THIS MUCH for?"
Now, if you ask someone how much tax they paid last year you will get an answer of the format "Oh, I got $900 back". They wont remember what they actually PAID.

I live in a suburb of Philadelphia and when the soda tax took effect I noticed a lot of people buying cases of soda at my supermarkets. In many cases they were Philadelphia citizens and came out to save on the soda tax. But the city also lost all the other revenue that they spent on food as well that they spent at my suburban store. Thanks for your higher taxes you helped add employees to,my local store and suburban community.

Their greed would push them to impose a minimum pay rate at a much inflated rate than it should be so that they will make more and the local business will not be able to afford to hire anyone unless they jack their prices way up in order to recoup the additional payroll expense. That scenario would close a lot of businesses or make everything expensive as hell.

This is what happened in Kansas City and Missouri several years ago with the Casino fight to legalize. Everyone was promised that the majority of the incoming funds would go to schools. That was a half truth. Yes the funds went to schools, but at the same time decrease the amount that was normally given to them, meaning that nothing changed. Something that voters have never forgotten to this day.

Such as, they didn't ban pfoa, used in manufacturing Teflon, because it's bad for your health (it is, but not enough is left to hurt you if you ate the entire coating at once)
They banned it in 2015 because the companies making Teflon got caught dumping tens of thousands of gallons of it into the environment..... every year.

That's exactly what happens in most states that have lotteries to fund schools. Technically, they keep their promise that all lottery monies go to the schools. However, they simultaneously take other revenues from the schools to fund whatever they want, so the actual increase in school budgets is little to none.
And then they have the inherent conflict of interest of schools, which are responsible to teach mathematics, being financially dependent on people who don't understand mathematical probabilities enough to see why playing the lottery is such a terrible idea.

My sister was a stay-at-home mom for the first year and a half after my niece was born.
She started getting severe mental problems from the isolation with her husband being gone at work most of the day and limited community interaction even with her church events. And she became listless with the lack of things to do besides, in her words, "just making sure my niece was still breathing", since modern conveniences make chores take minutes a day instead of a full-time job that it used to be in our great grandparent's day.
My sister kept feeling like she was failing her daughter as my sister was not self-motivated enough to do all of the active teaching and playing the way I or our mom did when we came over to babysit. That being because my sister was stuck in the same house 24/7, while we were only there for a few hours at most and could go home to recharge.
Even worse since she is not a gamer or anything that would keep an introvert like me happy.
So now she goes to work and barely makes more than the daycare, but it is worth it as when she is home, she is fully motivated to be a better mom as she has discipline, focus, motivation, and a set schedule from working.
The downside has been that daycare, even with all the best hygiene practices available, are still cesspools of communicable diseases as multiple children in the same spot with multiple kids per adult means that the kids can be gross and get germs everywhere. My niece has been sick for a large portion of this summer. @@Maidthatkoolaid

We need fewer elites in office, not more. Term limits would be a great start. For all positions and posts across America. From city, state, to federal levels. In addition, we implement the same on all government jobs. We need to remove the deep seated bureaucrats. They don't need to be in the same office for 20+ years. @Pierre-gu5vx I am not religious, I did not come to believe in my God through religion, but through having many experiences with God. The one true God was with me when I was born, revealing himself to me in all sorts of ways, such as showing me future events, protecting me in all sorts of unbelievable ways,...I knew God before I was born into this world. To give an example of my faith, when I was six years old I saw a big snake swimming across a lake and wanted to touch it. For some reason God told me to run and jump in the lake and go out to the snake and touch it. Without hesitation I did. I had no idea how deep the water was, I couldn't swim, but I kept running and jumped out far as I could into the water, to my surprise I was able to walk out very far. The snake turned and came to me and I put my hand on it's back as it swam by. Not long after that God told me of a copperhead snake that was about to try to bite my throat. I was running down a very steep hill, he told me to hold my arms out and back, stick my chest out, and hold my head back. Sure enough a big copperhead snake was right in front of me and I saw it's open mouth coming up toward my face. I bounced it's head off my chest and kept running. I'm almost 60 now and God has never failed to protect me from serious harm. He told me when I was 2 years old that I was protected for these end times. Yeshua/Jesus put something in my head for these end times when I was in my twenties. Anyway, I reject all religions and agree with Jiddu Krishnamurti when he said all religions stand in the way of truth. I don't have a religion, I have a relationship with the one true God.

Once again, those that were "elected" to "serve" the people (that elected them), end up enriching themselves at the expense of those they govern.
"We're from the government, and we're here to help".
    Yeah... right.

The problem is that most people are completely ignorant about what they are voting for so they just cheer things like this tax on, then they never check on what is done with it. They like to feel good but never be confronted by reality.

It doesn't matter what you check on, they are lying to your face to get it passed. Once passed, they do whatever they want. That is exactly what happened here.

When ever any politician wants a new tax, they always say its for schools or road or what ever sounds nice. Then watch even if it does for a few years they always amend the tax to go into the general fund. A former governor of my state was eviscerated by the local news because he wanted the highway tolls to go into the highway department, not the general fund. It never did get past the state house. As for the highway department, they continue to take out loans for "improvements" and they're constantly asking for more money.

    Hi.
Colorado here, we were the 1st to legalize Marijuana with a 19% tax.
The money was to better our roads and money to schools.
Years later our roads still suck and our schools operate on a 4 day week.

In the beginning, NY Lottery revenue went to the school system. About 20 years ago, it started getting dumped into the general fund. NY spends more on Lottery than any other city or state. Yet we still have some of the worst schools in the developed world.

As someone who resides in the Philadelphia suburbs, this soda tax isn’t the only extra tax that Philadelphia imposed that is not imposed or lower in the suburbs.
Philadelphia has a higher sales tax on goods and services than the suburbs. Philadelphia has a higher real estate transfer tax than the suburbs. Philadelphia has a higher wage and income tax than the suburbs.
But IIRC the funds from the soda tax were supposed to fund specific things, and I believe the funds end up getting diverted to fund other stuff. And that is what makes this worse.

Here we go again with the "corporations" which pay more taxes up front than any working family or individual yet use the tax codes created by the government to reduce this burden. You too can use the systems loopholes but choose rather to blow money on entertainment and desires between necessities. We as business owners invest in tax deductions consumers invest in luxury and convenience.
