Those who may not know, this is not just Austrian soup. A little historical insight: The Austro-Hungarian Empire's popular soup, and it's specifically eaten with this bread. In Hungarian, this bread is called 'cipó'. In the 1400s, Hungarian kings ate soup in this bread, and the corner of the bread (which the lady cuts off) was used as the spoon. :)
Great recipe. You could have taken the bread you pulled out of the loaves and cut it into small pieces. Then toasted it in a little butter in a skillet and sprinkled it over the top of the soup for some crunch.
I do that too as well. My bread is shaped like a tall cup filled halfway with soup. The bread inside I turn to toasted garlic sticks that I use as dip. Then I chop the top part with a bread cutter as I eat until all of them are gone. I only do this twice a week as I'm on a diet but dayum this meal is tempting and fulfulling.

I had guest yesterday and I made them this for dinner, they LOVED it, my brother even said it was the best meal he had aside from an excellent restaurant he discovered a few month, I thought I wouldn't like garlic soup, but it's like I rediscovered the taste of it. Definitely adding this to my book of recepies.
I tried this recipe. OMG, sooooooo good. Not just the soup was great. The bread was so easy to make and with the soup….delicious. I didn’t have fresh yeast so I used 7-8g instant dry yeast. It worked so well. Thanks again for your wonderful recipes. Please keep up the great work!❤😊🎉

I went to an Hungarian restaurant years ago and it served a garlic soup in a bread bowl just like it. Incredibly delicious! Although my breath, sweat and other bodily functions had a strong garlic smell the next day even after brushing and showering. My internals were grumbling and went through a cleanse like no other. I wasn't prepared as I worked in retail the next day in utter regret. Would do it again. It's worth it.
If you cook it by yourself id advise you to remove the green center (does greatly change the presence in the stomach and breath) and also perhaps cook it in lower heat by longer time in order to remove the sulfur (I’m talking about the garlic ofc) Best regardsss 😊
This is one of the best soups I have ever eaten! I thought the garlic would be overpowering, but it isn't. Even the bread bowls came out great! Easy recipe to follow. We added a little bacon & sprinkled some cheese on the soup. Thank you for sharing!

Made this today. It took 2 hours as I'm not used to cooking. I feel so proud for baking bread for the first time and it turned out so well. I used dry yeast. For the soup, I used beef stock 20g for 1 litre. It kind of overwhelmed the soup. It tasted like stock rather than garlic. I wonder if vegetable broth would have been milder. Never used vegetable broth in my life. Will try again.
If it helps I would go with a more herb flavor profile buy parsley, rosemary, bay leaves, basil, fresh thyme, etc and use vegetable broth. maybe include chicken flavoring flakes to taste if you feel like it needs it, or add leaks/chives
When I was little I didn't have much money and once a family member invited me to a luxury restaurant (so to call it) and I tried this dish, in my life I have never tasted something so delicious, I still can't get that exquisite flavor out of my mind, I will do everything possible to cook this delicious dish.

Had something similar but it was clam chowder in a freshly baked sourdough bread bowl with a pat of butter placed into the mix. It was absolutely delicious. There's also a chili version of it as well.

The bread as a dish works really well for all sorts of things, just so long as they're not going to make the bread go soggy and fall apart. I'm not a big soup person myself but have done something similar with stovies, basically stewed meat and potatoes, as a winter warmer.

my favourite dish i make when i was working at french baker. I enjoyed cooking the soup for the day and assemble it in this kind of bread. I meticulously sliced the inside of the bread creating a perfect circle for the soup. of course, garnish most of the dish with fresh chopped parsley.

@@enlilw-l2 Most recipes that add cream also add nutmeg. I haven’t tried this one yet, but just know it will be better tasting for me. Nutmeg and I don’t mix well. I am also one of those people that think cilantro tastes like soap, so maybe it’s a similar thing.

Interesting, apparently the garlic soup recipe is very similar to the mashed potatoes we make at Peru, with only 2 differences: the soup is liquid in comparison of the heavy creamy texture of the mashed ones and the more concentrated flavor on the soup due to the higher amount of garlic and stock. Gotta try this out :D
I remember going to a Renaissance fair one time for a field trip with my school and they were selling this there. I tried it once and I was hooked. All the money my mom gave me for the trip went to this. I brought like 6 of them cause it was so good.

There is a traditional Polish soup based on sourdough rye flour with egg and sausage called żurek. It is also served in bread. :-)
Had it in one of the best restaurant in Kraków, incredible.
What you scrape out from the bread dice up and grill it, throw it on the soup then. You get a very delicate and filling soup.

my favourite dish i make when i was working at french baker. I enjoyed cooking the soup for the day and assemble it in this kind of bread. I meticulously sliced the inside of the bread creating a perfect circle for the soup. of course, garnish most of the dish with fresh chopped parsley.

It looks great, but you can't really call it typical. I am Austrian and never in my life have I seen soup served inside bread
This tastes heavenly! I am eating my 3rd portion as I type. the only minor detail I would ad: Take the bread you pulled out of the bowl, shred it a bit and put a bit in the served bowl!

@@enlilw-l2 Most recipes that add cream also add nutmeg. I haven’t tried this one yet, but just know it will be better tasting for me. Nutmeg and I don’t mix well. I am also one of those people that think cilantro tastes like soap, so maybe it’s a similar thing.

Interesting, apparently the garlic soup recipe is very similar to the mashed potatoes we make at Peru, with only 2 differences: the soup is liquid in comparison of the heavy creamy texture of the mashed ones and the more concentrated flavor on the soup due to the higher amount of garlic and stock. Gotta try this out :D
I remember going to a Renaissance fair one time for a field trip with my school and they were selling this there. I tried it once and I was hooked. All the money my mom gave me for the trip went to this. I brought like 6 of them cause it was so good.

Hoy lo hice y me quedó bien chingón. Le puse un toque mexicano, la sopa la cociné con un poco de epazote, le dió más aroma y le puse la nata para montar con un poco de queso crema. Al final decore con perejil y queso manchego rayado. Y la acompañe con una cerveza de aguacate. Soy productor de cerveza artesanal. Muchas gracias por tu receta. A la próxima le voy a agregar chile.
