    Bought our house two years ago. This is our first experience with a septic system. The cast iron pipe that went from the house to the tank was completely blocked. Plumber said we were just minutes away from total back up. The plumber gave us a price of $5400 to dig up and replace the cast iron with pvc. Called a clean out service and not only did they pump the tank they replaced the pipe, but they also added a riser to never have to dig up to locate the tank and all they charged me was $1150. Thank you Mark Adkins in Somerset Kentucky!

    I'd read in a government publication here in Canada that a majority of property owners have not maintained their Septic Systems. This poses a big problem for many of the city dwellers cashing out and moving to the rural areas where they have no idea what they're facing with unmaintained septics. Suddenly many are face with horrendous added costs as you alluded to. Very informative video thanks.

    • @Z-Ack
      @Z-Ack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You know you can have a septic company come out and do an inspection at the cost of the homeowners if youre going to buy the property. You just have to tell your agent that you want it added to the list of things youd want fixed on your contract and even add a stipulation that says if refused the septic inspection cost then the previous owner will be held responsible for any repair costs if the septic inspector of your choice deems in need of immediate repair and you foot the cost of the inspection.. you gotta do stuff like that because even the nicest of people will bandaid up some crap and sell the stuff to you then after a year or two the concrete patch falls off revealing a big part of missing foundation or something that ends up costing 20 grand to fix.. that was my experience.., even had 3 inspectors on the place and come 2 years after i moved in the walls developed cracks and ceilings and floors, a window shattered on its own then a 3 foot square chunk of plaster and concrete falls off the block wall inside and was even made to look like itcwas blocks. But revealed the wall had fallen in about 3 feet and pushed the rest of the block in so they just reset the block where it was and patched itvup.. the wall wasent supporting anything and the foundation was gone with the house side hanging in the air over a hole in the ground.. was nice to have to deal with being broke and alone..,.

    • @niceshot4563
      @niceshot4563 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Z-Ack The buyer usually foots the bill for the septic inspection, especially in a hot market. You add septic inspection to the list of subjects on the contract. If it fails inspection, that is when you can discuss repairs and costs and if the seller isn't willing to fix the problem you can back out. The condition of the septic tank is disclosed by the buyer in the property disclosure statement, you can't make the seller fix the septic tank if you have an accepted offer and you do not have any subjects.

    I have always put a riser pipe or riser pipes and decorative concrete stone cover or covers level with the landscape , grass or lawn over the riser pipe or riser pipes which are safe and smooth to ride your mower over when cutting the grass , or if hidden in a small landscape garden . Which is larger than the septic tank opening cover too heavy for little to young kids but fairly easy for any adult male or female or older teenager with a quick shovel or long bar to loosen it in just a minute . Then by hand you can open it fairly easy and is safe to ride your mower over it when it's in place over the riser pipe or riser pipes in the grass or lawn . That way you don't have to dig up your septic tank to get at your septic tank cover or septic tank covers . The septic tank cover or covers down in the riser pipe or riser pipes will be opened by the septic service company which is heavy to very heavy and most times are stuck and are part of the pumping service . The decorative Stone concrete cover or covers are too heavy for little to young kids to open . Which can be hidden in a little landscape garden if you don't want it seen but is quite safe if little to young kids find it or know it's there . This way you can save yourself hard work or good money to have your septic tank pumped out . Also very important is to check or have them check all the baffles in the septic tanks to make sure they are in place in working order !!

      I wonder why they aren't designed with a low point in the bottom of the tank with a pipe going down to that point. The other end of the pipe and a breather could just stick out of the ground and be attached to the septic truck. Seems like septic pumping could be made much easier without all the labor and you wouldn't even have to pump all the water out.

    • @zakman9244
      @zakman9244 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ryelor123 Because it won't be pumped out completely and properly !!! You have your heavy sediments on the bottom section and the floating bad stuff on the top !!! So each tank Must be pumped out completely , every time , all of it !!! And then you Must check both baffles in each tank !!! Or your tank or tanks and system will fail badly which will require major expensive repairs or very costly replacement of the system !!! So your pipe idea is a Big Time No-No failure even before you start !!!

    Pro-tip: Get some peppermint oil (they sell it in little spray bottles even) and spray it on the inside of your facemask or bandana when you do something like this. Peppermint oil kinda overwhelms your sense of smell so it blocks out even really bad smells pretty effectively. My buddy who works for a business that does biological waste cleanup (yeah... including corpses and whatnot) keeps a couple bottles in his truck specifically for this reason.

    My parents built the house I grew up in, and it has a septic system, but they took great care to do everything right. It’s never been opened in 40 years and is still running great.
    They had it built 150% larger than they thought they would ever need, with two tanks, with extra slope between the tanks and drain field. Only human waste and toilet paper were allowed. We didn’t have a garbage disposal in the kitchen sink because they wanted zero foods down the drain.

      OP is right though.
      Septic system shouldn't have to be opened up and pumped. If you have to open it or pump it, something went wrong.
      It's the chemicals and mainly grease that kills a tank but of course people might be flushing things that create a blockage. If you run a system right it never needs to be opened, especially an oversized tank.
      I've been installing, maintaining and pumping septic systems since the 90's.

      Too much grease kills a tank in the same way it kills a cow's stomach. If you can't understand that you can't be helped. You have to learn to accept knowledge, not just stick to whatever pitch some salesman told you.
      I can't imagine how my job is made harder by teaching clients to run their system properly. You don't actually mean harder though, you mean that I won't be stealing so much money from people who don't need the work done.
      Decades on decades of servicing homes, hotels, hospitals, restaurants, bowling alleys and just about any kind of business or dwelling you can name says you need more experience.
      You have 2 eyes, two ears and 1 mouth. It's nature's way of telling you to watch and listen more and talk less. Learn from people with experience. Better to keep quiet and let people think you're a fool than to speak up and prove it to them.
      I've seen tanks killed by grease and oil, plants and chemicals, flood waters, plastics and papers solvents and cements, you name it. I've seen tanks that haven't been serviced in 40 plus years that are working like 5 year old tanks. I've seen 5 year old tanks that don't work better than a bucket. I've seen tanks made of barrels and drums that haven't been serviced for 15 plus years that don't need to be serviced.
      If you run it right it's balanced and you don't need to do a thing to it... Unless you want to lie and steal from your clients. They'll believe you. Most will never find you out. But you'll know. If you're okay with that, so be it.

      I did it for work as temporary cover and honestly, it's not that bad. Going into a bathroom right after someone has taken a dump usually smells a LOT worse than an open septic tank. You're outside in the open air, so what little smell there is dissipates quickly. The only thing you need to fear is the pipes disconnecting during pumping, because if the tanker is only sucking in air then it loses its vacuum and the contents of that tank pour straight back out of the break in the pipe, all over the customers property. Oh, and don't stand close to the edge if it's an old brick tank. Sometimes the weight of the water is the only thing stopping the walls from collapsing, so when you start draining the tank, the whole thing collapses and drops you straight in the middle. I've only heard of it happening to one person, but it was real nightmare fuel!

    I used to own a septic pumping business for over 25 years and it is normal for the sludge to drift from the solid side to the liquid side. What I didn't see these guys do is wash up the sludge to make the bottom of both sides clean as they can and it doesn't hurt to throw in some yeast every few months down the toilet to help break down the solids. It creates bacteria in the septic system and your system will go longer between pumping. Also if you can plumb your laundry off the system because the pump in the laundry pushes the solids through the tank when your washing machine drains and it isn't good for your system. And do not over water your area around your septic system because it could fill up your system and you will have a back up and need pumping just like if your toilet flapper valves or water lever is to high in your toilet too. All these things can make your pumping happen more often. I am retired now and I live on a septic system and I have no problems with mine.

Some people use their toilets like waste paper baskets. 3. No chemicals or additives. Before our town installed sewers everyone had septic tanks, so they were still buried underground and just covered. When I had some construction done many years later the contractor went to install a concrete footing and discovered the tank was in the way. But he also made another discovery: Instead of a steel cover as is shown here, the builders of the home had simply covered the tank with a square of half-inch plywood. He slid it aside and there was a gaping hole, 3 feet wide by 6 feet deep. When I think about all those times I mowed the lawn and all that stood between me and a concrete grave was a piece of rotting plywood..... 😳

      I've been living in my house for 18 years. I have a septic tank and have been using Roebic K-37 twice a year since I moved in. I didn't have my septic tank pumped out for 17 years. When they pumped out my septic tank, they told me it was one of the cleanest septic tanks they had ever seen. They couldn't believe that I had never had my septic tank pumped out. The guy told me, "Whatever You're Doing, Keep Doing It." I just put more Roebic K-37 in my septic system today. Good for another 6 months. I will probably have it pumped out in another ten years or so.

Luckily, a septic company was able to come out on Saturday to pump it. We won't wait so long next time. By the way, we expected it to cost $400+ because they came out on a weekend/same day but they only charged $250. (Helped that we already had the lid dug up) So my husband gave the two guys a $50 tip each. We were EXTREMELY happy with their service. 😊😊😊

Once a year dad would throw a hole chicken to keep the microbes happy, a farmer told him that. Also bleaches and soaps kill healthy microbes, I have heard of separate gray water tanks for this reason, NO BABY WIPES!!!!! you are asking for major problems, feminine hygiene products is a no go as well. We had a 6" solid grease cap that needed to be broken through to get the tank pumped. I'm thinking the previous owners ran lots of stuff out to the tank they weren't supposed to. The grease was blocking the drain field so we basically just had a big holding tank. I tried a massive dose of septic treatment enzymes for about 6 months. 3 month doses every week. All different brands (expensive) It actually broke down that huge amount of solid grease and opened up the drain field.

If you have two tanks the second tank is called the pump tank. It will in turn have a pump in it and will have the access riser above grade. In his tank he has 2 compartments. They are divided by a wall called the baffle wall. It is a solid wall a little over halfway in the tank with a 4 in slit in the middle. That allows the solids and sludge to stay in the first compartment. Only water goes into the second compartment then through his outlet T and into his drain field. If he has a filter his access riser would need to be accessible from grade. Depending on county that is a minimum of 3 in. Also when pumping the tank you ALWAYS stir the sludge into the water to make a milk shake then pump. If you just pump the water it will be a pain in the butt to suck the sludge out. You know when to pump the tank because of a routine maintenance called a sludge test. It's a tube that you stick in the tank and see the levels of sludge and scum. If they meet over 40% of total water depth then the tank needs pumping. Generally 3 to 5 years on a household of 4.

      our tank had a thick crud blanket on the top and very little sludge on the bottom of the tank, is that a good thing?

    • @nwrick125
      @nwrick125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The crust is what you want in a septic tank not all of it being a sludge in the bottom. If it is all sludge in the bottom this is what we call a dead tank. The bacteria is not alive or active. A healthy tank will attach everything on top the floating crust. This tanks ia 2 compartment tank. If it was a pressurized system it would be either a 3 compartment tank or one 2 compartment tank and a second one chambered tank with a pump and floats to pump it to a drain field.

    You would literally need 3 more feet of sludge for it to even have the chance to get into your drainfield. Also, those are the same tanks, just a baffled wall separating the two sides. You want your solids to turn into sludge, like it did in this tank. Most drainfield failures are caused by not having enough bacteria in the tank to break the solids down. Which causes the solids to float and leaves the opportunity for it to leave through the outlet pipe, clogging the drainfield.

      My system only has one tank and baffles. I have the tank pumped every three years. Seems to work great. Also, never drive over a leech field, that can eventually ruin the pipes.

    • @swskitso
      @swskitso 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Dont matter if solids float, they wont make it out as long as your outlet baffle is intact.
      Water softeners dump a lot of salt into the system and it breaks down the concrete often leading to baffle failure.
      Anyone who has a water softener installed should have its drain bypass the septic, it must be a dedicated drain for only the softener to pass code.

    Install risers to access and inspect your tanks regularly. Install an effluent filter on the outlet of the secondary tank to assist in removal of solids before they go into your leach field. Install a riser on your distribution box that you can open and inspect for possible solids entering your leach field. Piece of mind is worth a little bit of money.

    When I was younger I worked in landscaping, we had a customer with a flooded septic tank and we wouldn't mow or walk on the flooded area, they complained multiple times that we needed to mow it anyway because it was our job they said, I told the lady I didn't wanna get covered in shit water and she called my boss trying to get me fired, we dropped them as a customer and enformed other landscape companies about that customer in tips groups and almost all of them knew who she was... lol 😆
    Eventually the city forced her to fix it and she went on the news saying that it had just happened and it was unfair for her to be treated that way, but in reality she had known about it for years and expected it to go away.

      @Christopher Smith I use composting toilets. No water in, no water out. Vented above ridge line so no smell. After a year or so, clean out the tank of compost. Compost outside for 1 month and it's safe for the vegetable garden.
      I was inspired years ago for this method of sewage disposal by Sir Edmund Hillary. He returned to Mt Everest area to plant trees and install digesters for humans and their animals. Methane given off is collected and condensed then used for cooking and heating.
      For people who think nothing of making a mess of their plot of land, a little dip of the head in raw sewage tends to open their eyes.

    I like that you are encouraging people to pump their tank(s) every 3-5 years; however, most people having two tanks may be something specific to your area/state. I design septic systems in Virginia and two tanks is not normal here. If you are worried about solids going into the drainfield from the second tank -- you could put an effluent filter on the outlet. In this two-tank configuration it would probably only need cleaning as often as you pump the tanks. BTW put some risers on those tanks! I know some people think they are unsightly, but a low profile one isn't that bad. You'll never have to locate it, dig it up or lift those giant lids again!

      In Iowa a lot of newer septic tanks are using grease interceptors which, as you probably know, are single tanks divided by baffles inside, usually with 2-3 lids. Personally, my septic is an older, single tank and since I work for a small company that cleans out traps and interceptors my boss lets me clear out my septic whenever I want, so I go for a yearly clean. Usually late fall.
