    I worked in the medical field as a phlebotomist when I was in college and a TA showed us this video. It was really interesting to see, do you guys think technology like this could help patient that suffer from muscular dystrophy? Like a physical therapist who could have sessions with their patient in hopes of recovering their muscle? Which could hopefully lead to a faster recovery.

    • @josephkoch2262
      @josephkoch2262 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Honestly, it sounds possible..
      With more advanced tech, someone could probably invent a way for an entire limb to be controlled. If that was possible, even a quadriplegic person would be able to have their muscles exercised to some extent. That could help people suffering atrophy.
      I wonder if we will see more medical uses

      Sam Wolff His hand will still move.

    • @telephonedude
      @telephonedude 9 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Sam Wolff So when you tell your hand to move, your brain is just sending a signal, and this (electrical) signal is what the electrodes detect. Now regardless of wether your hand actually can move or not, that signal is still being sent, which means the other person's hand will still move.
      So for someone with weak or damaged muscles this trick would still work, but someone with damaged nerves it might not.

    • @Drivebymumble
      @Drivebymumble 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      telephonedude Yep, but more specifically it wouldn't work if the signal was somehow not getting to the ulnic nerve. Or if there was some sort of damage to the motor cortex.

    • @TheEpitome44
      @TheEpitome44 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      telephonedude I ask because it kind of looked like the electrodes were measuring a kinetic thing (i.e. muscles/tendons literally moving) rather than an electrical impulse. So even if the nerves were there, but no actual muscles connecting to them, you say it would still work...

    • @telephonedude
      @telephonedude 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sam Wolff Yup! Like Zalx mentioned, as long as the signal reaches the nerve being monitored (in this case the ulnar), the electrodes will pick it up, and subsequently send a stimulating signal to the other person's arm.
      If you want some fun reading, there is a "headgear", for lack of a better word, (I believe by Emotiv, but I could be wrong) that does essentially the same thing: picking up signals from your head and face, and using them to control digital elements (think games for instance). This can make it seem as if you're controlling a game character with your mind, for example.

    He's being a bit deceptive. The device IS reading the electric signals from her body, but the same signal ISN'T being sent to him. It simply shocks his nerve when it detects a signal from her. He could have just hooked the male up to something that delivers an electric shock by pressing a button and the results would be the same. This is also why his hand doesn't move in the same manner as hers, it just simply moves.

      BoxOfDemons It's not exactly like a button, more like an extremely crude version of the "full" version. If you could do this with Participant A's neurons mapped to Participant B's neurons, A's mind would have full control over the other's body. Obviously, he does not have the time or the budget to do that, so given a five-minute setup, it's still pretty impressive.

    • @Mutantcy1992
      @Mutantcy1992 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      BoxOfDemons This is true, and I wish they wouldn't be quite as deceptive with this type of research. I'm sure they could have set it up with her leg and his arm and still gotten similar result. When the guy moved her hand, anyone expecting the other guy's hand to move wasn't paying any attention to how it worked, but then he goes and says no it's her brain moving his arm.

    • @keira_churchill
      @keira_churchill 9 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      BoxOfDemons It would have been the same signal amplified and relayed, but as the electrodes were just slapped on they wouldn't be focussed and and wouldn't have an exact mirror effect. If the pair had signed up for surgery to have electrodes directly attached to their ulnar nerve then she could probably have controlled his last couple of digits individually with that technique. That would be a bit extreme for a Ted talk demonstration, I think. :)
      The ulnar nerve only controls the last couple of digits, so although she was moving her whole hand, the given signal only had an effect on a couple of his fingers. A plain shock to the arm at that point would have produced a very different result from what was seen.
      I was impressed by the demonstration.

    • @agramer
      @agramer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      BoxOfDemons Right! He is also being deceptive when he claims he is recording single motor units with the surface electrodes. In order to do that, wire electrodes would need to be inserted into the muscle. What is being recorded here is the muscle's electromyographic activity, which is not a brain signal per se.

    It would be great if they made a device that lets you feel someone else's pain. When someone visits their doctor and has a hard time explaining the pain, the doctor could attach the device to the patient and himself so the doctor can better understand what the patient is feeling which would help the doctor to better treat the patient. Another use I see for this technology is when a cop arrests someone, the cop could attach the device to himself and the criminal and control the criminal to get in the cop car and go to jail peacefully without resisting arrest.
