@@veo1053 painting the town red is an expression that basically means to celebrate without restraint, there's nothing particularly SPECIAL about it, just an observation I had. If I were to try and link it to something deeper, you could interpret painting the town red with rebellion and personal freedom (as you 'let loose' and do as you please without worrying about what others think of you) which in turn parallels nicely with Persona 5's overall themes of individuality, fighting against an unfair reality, and (spoiler) the final boss in particular having themes of fighting against people oppressing their own personal freedom for the sake of an easier life. But that's just me talking outta my arse, mostly it's just fun imagery I noticed.
Persona 3 is my favorite game because of how perfect the themes are connected to the game play. The fact that you have a limited amount of time and you have to make sure to spend it wisely ties into the themes of accepting your death but continuing forward with the time you have instead of being depressed. It fits really well and I love the story for P3 the most

PERSONA 5'S OPENING: The rain is also symbolic of a specific spoiler you see by the end of the game. People who have beaten the game will know what i mean.
personally, i believe that p3 portable opening deserved to replace p4 golden’s op. it was clever , because you could turn it over and see it from the femc’s character and its amazing :))) and theres a whole lot of symbolism and borrows the ideas of quotes of philosophy from the original persona 3.
5 really get's some subtle info there, from the fact Ryuji is always favoring a leg except when running, Ann's more complicated pose which seems to allude to her modeling, and of course there's the opening of the prison gates as the wardens shift color, also SPOILER ALERT: P4 original OP showcases who the killer is by having him be the only character no looking at the screen.

I really love how smooth the transitions between the choices on the list are, it really makes the video feel less like a stagnant list and more like someone talking in a nice fluid way about their favorite persona openings. Great work!

Review all of them. ALL OF THEM!! Every. Single. Persona OP ever. Kidding, I know you would lose subscribers if you did that but it would make me a very happy man. You should review 3, 4 and 5's ops. I realize that IS placed higher than 4 but I doubt that many would watch it besides me and the few Megaten fans out there who have played games besides 3,4 and 5. By the way my favorite op is P4Arena which was so good that when I saw it during E3 2013 it got me to buy the game despite having never played a single game in the series before and I think you can tell from my name how good of a decision that was.

I'm a little sad the opening of Persona 3 Portable didn't make the top 10, but i'm willing to admit it's probably my bias since it was the first Persona I ever played. It gave me a sense of melancholy seeing my future teammates die, but still getting back up to fight filled me with hope the more I played it. Cheesy, I know, but there you go haha.
My favorite opening, feels like P2 IS remake but more asthetic and meaningful. Shame he didn't include P3P here even though much better than Persona 4 Golden opening haha

Hailstormful persona 3 was my first persona. Loved sl system, story, art, anime cs. Awesome game. Second (third if you count is and ep as 2) favorite persona game. But as rpg it is bad. I mean battle system. Look at persona 2 with 5 members in team, planing and 4 only phys types of dmg. And at persona 3, where there is AI for everyone. And easy mechanics. And no dn system. Like comparing battle systems of ff6 to mystic quest. P3P is better game, worse presentation. My play order was p3-p1-p2EP-p2IS-P4-spinoffs-P5. And persona 4 was huge let down. Good game, even got kinda good battle system. But everything else (expt art. i loved it) is worse than persona 3's. Characters, story, sl. everything. Now i rearly have a chance to play games, and haven't played persona 5 that much, but it looks like the best persona game. And best rpg as well. Which is good after the 4'th one.
Erwi i hate 3rd persona's battle system. It would be awesome, if not those stupid AI for comrades. Everything else is awesome. DN system isn't there. That's also bad. Tartarus is fckn boring. I mean, what's the joy of being in the same dungeon for 40 floors? And then fight recolored dood with insta-kill (without grinding 1-2 hours for EXP and personas) spell, that you have seen 10000 times before. on those 200 floors. Story is great. And characters. And music. Still, better thn persona 1 and 4 (and 2 if you don't count IS and EP as 1 game). P.s. 3rd persona was my first persona game. Love it
I also love Persona 3's OP the most. It pulled me in insanely well, unlike anything I'd ever seen in a game before. It's also my favourite game of all time.
I love how every single cutscene and animated sequence in P3 were so unique and subtle. It kind of had to, as the animation quality was very poor. Interestingly, I think the poor art actually helped in many cases.
i liked p3p opening and music better than original p3. the overall tone of p3p opening was much darker and mysterious, and i never liked burn my dread. the scene of ken raising the gun to his head, as a dead aki covered in blood looms above him was outstanding. and the mirrored imagery making it so you could flip your psp upside down and have a new "reverse" opening was a good way to represent the two protagonists of the game, but that the journey is still the same. honestly, way better than any of the p4 spinoff openings.
Alexander Luna Nah, you are wrong. Original opening is by far the best in the series and serves the most meaning, while P3P is just "wou look threr is a grill!!!1 play as her she cool". Even P3P by itself is just a quick cashgrab for Atlus. You can completely avoid playng it and you will miss nothing. No actual new content, just the crappy girl side, which serves no meaning. Come on, do you really think, that the game like Persona 3 really needed a girl to be a protagonist just to add more gags and funny moments? A game where protagonist sacrifices himself so everyone could live? Sorry, but I don't see this type of hero running around in a maid costume and dating a 10 year old boy. I don't see P3P is dark. As long as you play a girl side it jumps to dark (plot cutscenes) to a shitshow (everything else). It even turns the HUD pink! Why?
i never said i liked p3p, in fact i actively despise it because its such a downgrade from p3fes even with the new female protag and male social links. all i said was that i like the opening because it has a darker tone than the original opening. burn my dread starts off with a cute vibe, and the colors of the original opening make it look more cheery compared to the drab colors of the psp opening. and like i said, i never liked burn my dread, and prefer the psp opening song. but thats just preference. i feel p3 opening deserves its spot, but the fact that p3p didnt make the list but so many of those god awful p4 spinoffs did was a harsh blow.
I'd love to see a full analysis of both the P5 and P3 openings. Maybe if you do a video on P3's opening you can chuck in some quick thoughts on P3P's opening too? I actually never finished P3, by the time I got into Persona P3 already felt a bit dated to me mechanics-wise. That said, P3's opening is still my favourite for how creative it is and Burn My Dread is my fav opening song from the series too. I adore everything about P5 but P3's OP still edges it in those aspects..
SuperLink Josh I know it’s late but I highly recommend finishing persona 3 as it’s a fantastic game and one that needs to be played to the end and honestly just don’t take mitsuru and half your AI problems go away because screw Marin Karen and tbh it doesn’t feel that dated besides not being able to control your party but for me I never control my party in p4 or 5 unless it’s a boss fight so I never had an issue with it

Despite the poor addition of clips of cutscenes and gameplay, Persona 3 FES' opening is still one of my favorites. The music is just so good, it instantly stomps every other op beneath it.

Persona Q has my favorite OP and favorite opening song of the persona Franchise. (Not all of SMT mind you... Just Persona.) And I'm so happy it's on this list.
I know it won't happen, but I wish he would comment about how he feels about the OP for Dancing Moon Night. It's practically serves double duty as the characters describing how they feel after the end of Persona 3 and as a love letter to the fans. With smt - also not realy Mt - interesting fusion system. And DN. That's it Smt - your dark-fantasy rpg in PA setting + everything great about mt Dk - smt fused with pokemon in fantasy world. I love P3 but the so tiring and almost empty dungeons makes me very annoyed that I have to do 200 floors of this dungeon. Burn my Bre-- ahem, Burn my Dread is one of my top songs all time. Burn my Breaaaddd-- ahem, Dreaaddd!!

Lol I knew that at least one of P3s openings would come in at #1. Personally, I enjoy all of the Persona openings and find that each of them has their own unique charm and style that aptly suits the game/anime which they're connected to. If I had to narrow down some favorites though, I'd probably go with Persona 1 (PSP), Persona 3, and Persona 3 Portable. [On another note though, I really don't see why Mother's Basement seems to dislike The Answer so much? The gameplay may be a BIG turnoff for many considering how extremely grind-heavy, unforgiving, and tedious it is, but I feel that on their own merit the story bits in it are very good and provide essential character growth for the entire cast (especially Aigis), - overall giving us much better insight into the all characters & their motivations.]

Persona 2 is my favorite (duology) in the series, with the PSP P2:IS being my personal favorite opening. (Though, I put it equal with Persona 3's). Mop I guess it's because she was very distinct from the male MC. She wasn't just Minato with boobs. It made replaying all of P3 far more interesting. Plus, you get to romance P3's male cast, which, creepy shota shit aside, is awesome.
The female MC is like her own character, a new design, different responses to in-game events, and people treat you differently. For example, Yukari and her, in the beginning, have a character dynamic that was absent with Minato. It's a different experience. (Also, she has a different weapon.)
YES! There's a shot of Ken Amada standing next to Koromaru and besides him Shinji is coming down an escalator and the shot cuts immediately before his face is shown, in perfect sync with the music. That cut is so so sweet it gives an immense pleasure every time I see that op!
While Persona 3 was my first Persona game, Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden's openings will always have that highest place in my heart. Persona 3 showed me the song which would influence me to find my calling in voice acting and composing (Poem for Everyone's Souls), and the game itself lead me to P4 which (along with Okami, and without any sort of hyperbole) saved my life. Even now, five years later, though Persona 3 is still a beautiful and poignant game, it's Persona 4 Golden which inspired me to write my musical, and what continues to inspire me as I write chord after chord and line after line. All of that being said, I would be incredibly happy to see you dissect each and every OP for the Persona games! And I do mean ALL OF THEM. In whichever order you'd prefer to create and release them, I would watch every single one, and pass them on to my friends as well! I love these videos, and I love that your sharp eyes pick out things that even *I* didn't notice in these scenes (the Personas appearing on the frames while zooming into Izanagi actually blew my mind, I had no idea they were there). Equal parts educational and entertaining, your videos are something that I always look forward to being released. I don't know why I wasn't already subscribed (I could have sworn I had before, damn you TH-cam!), but I am certainly subscribed now! Okay, Geoff... I think we deserve to know - what exactly is your deal with "The Answer"? I thought it was a clever flip of the main game's dungeon-tower crawling, had phenomenal remixes of the main game's music, and explained a few things that truly needed "answers," pun intended.
Another good point I've heard about P5's Figure Skating is that since the protagonists are Phantom Thieves, they're... on thin ice. (Though this is probably unintentional, since it's an English pun, it's still cool)

I would love to see a more indepth discussion of not only the openings, but the games if you ever got the time to do so. Just finished Persona 5 recently and it probably one of my favorite games ever. I want to get back to P4 and P3 eventually, but I'll likely have to emulate them since my PS3 I originally had yellow-lighted (AGAIN) and I've lost my digital copies since Sony isn't porting those to PS4 yet. :(
honestly i would adore in depth talk about any of these, i love hearing everything frame by frame that i cant catch, but if you want to at least go into the top 5 i would be ecstatic!
I have an extremely soft spot for the original Persona's PSP remake (I'm not talking about P3P or the P2 remakes, I mean the original Persona) The style is really cool like as if it's made of construction paper and there are tons of hints to the plot are hidden in the background, the song is really catchy and the lyrics fit the game. It's just really stylish in every way. The only thing that takes away a little is that it uses some clips of the redone cutscenes, but I really enjoy the way these phantom hands pull away the clips. It's definitely a lot more creative than the P3FES opening.
And now both Persona 3 and 4 are somewhat in the shade as P5 gets a giant recognition from a more mainstream Western audience that doesn't know the series has been this way and with those qualities for some time.
@@Esmoxe Exactly, the story is more dumbed down and less complicated than the last two and it's much easier. I've noticed that's it's a trend that the easiest entries in videogame series are always the most popular and successful like Skyrim. But what's worst is that most people who think that Persona 5 is the best one in the series or that the previous games are bad probably either watched a playthrough or never touched any of the previous games.
As a game, I didnt like persona 5 as much. Never felt a growing connection with the other characters, found mona a lazy rehash of teddy (but more likable) and felt more forced doing certain things (or rather not allowing me to do more things) then in p3 and p4, not efficiently hiding it through story. I still like the game, but it didnt reach the height of either p4 or p3

Review all of them. ALL OF THEM!! Every. Single. Persona OP ever. Kidding, I know you would lose subscribers if you did that but it would make me a very happy man. You should review 3, 4 and 5's ops. I realize that IS placed higher than 4 but I doubt that many would watch it besides me and the few Megaten fans out there who have played games besides 3,4 and 5. By the way my favorite op is P4Arena which was so good that when I saw it during E3 2013 it got me to buy the game despite having never played a single game in the series before and I think you can tell from my name how good of a decision that was.

I'm a little sad the opening of Persona 3 Portable didn't make the top 10, but i'm willing to admit it's probably my bias since it was the first Persona I ever played. It gave me a sense of melancholy seeing my future teammates die, but still getting back up to fight filled me with hope the more I played it. Cheesy, I know, but there you go haha.

At the very least, you could have put a spoiler warning in the description instead of catching people off guard by telling them the ending of persona 3 without warning.

Hailstormful persona 3 was my first persona. Loved sl system, story, art, anime cs. Awesome game. Second (third if you count is and ep as 2) favorite persona game. But as rpg it is bad. I mean battle system. Look at persona 2 with 5 members in team, planing and 4 only phys types of dmg. And at persona 3, where there is AI for everyone. And easy mechanics. And no dn system. Like comparing battle systems of ff6 to mystic quest. P3P is better game, worse presentation. My play order was p3-p1-p2EP-p2IS-P4-spinoffs-P5. And persona 4 was huge let down. Good game, even got kinda good battle system. But everything else (expt art. i loved it) is worse than persona 3's. Characters, story, sl. everything. Now i rearly have a chance to play games, and haven't played persona 5 that much, but it looks like the best persona game. And best rpg as well. Which is good after the 4'th one.

Erwi i hate 3rd persona's battle system. It would be awesome, if not those stupid AI for comrades. Everything else is awesome. DN system isn't there. That's also bad. Tartarus is fckn boring. I mean, what's the joy of being in the same dungeon for 40 floors? And then fight recolored dood with insta-kill (without grinding 1-2 hours for EXP and personas) spell, that you have seen 10000 times before. on those 200 floors. Story is great. And characters. And music. Still, better thn persona 1 and 4 (and 2 if you don't count IS and EP as 1 game). P.s. 3rd persona was my first persona game. Love it

I also love Persona 3's OP the most. It pulled me in insanely well, unlike anything I'd ever seen in a game before. It's also my favourite game of all time.

I love how every single cutscene and animated sequence in P3 were so unique and subtle. It kind of had to, as the animation quality was very poor. Interestingly, I think the poor art actually helped in many cases.

i liked p3p opening and music better than original p3. the overall tone of p3p opening was much darker and mysterious, and i never liked burn my dread. the scene of ken raising the gun to his head, as a dead aki covered in blood looms above him was outstanding. and the mirrored imagery making it so you could flip your psp upside down and have a new "reverse" opening was a good way to represent the two protagonists of the game, but that the journey is still the same. honestly, way better than any of the p4 spinoff openings.

Even P3P by itself is just a quick cashgrab for Atlus. You can completely avoid playng it and you will miss nothing. No actual new content, just the crappy girl side, which serves no meaning. Come on, do you really think, that the game like Persona 3 really needed a girl to be a protagonist just to add more gags and funny moments? A game where protagonist sacrifices himself so everyone could live? Sorry, but I don't see this type of hero running around in a maid costume and dating a 10 year old boy. I don't see P3P is dark. As long as you play a girl side it jumps to dark (plot cutscenes) to a shitshow (everything else). It even turns the HUD pink! Why?
i never said i liked p3p, in fact i actively despise it because its such a downgrade from p3fes even with the new female protag and male social links. all i said was that i like the opening because it has a darker tone than the original opening. burn my dread starts off with a cute vibe, and the colors of the original opening make it look more cheery compared to the drab colors of the psp opening. and like i said, i never liked burn my dread, and prefer the psp opening song. but thats just preference. i feel p3 opening deserves its spot, but the fact that p3p didnt make the list but so many of those god awful p4 spinoffs did was a harsh blow.

I actually never finished P3, by the time I got into Persona P3 already felt a bit dated to me mechanics-wise.
That said, P3's opening is still my favourite for how creative it is and Burn My Dread is my fav opening song from the series too. I adore everything about P5 but P3's OP still edges it in those aspects..

SuperLink Josh I know it’s late but I highly recommend finishing persona 3 as it’s a fantastic game and one that needs to be played to the end and honestly just don’t take mitsuru and half your AI problems go away because screw Marin Karen and tbh it doesn’t feel that dated besides not being able to control your party but for me I never control my party in p4 or 5 unless it’s a boss fight so I never had an issue with it

Despite the poor addition of clips of cutscenes and gameplay, Persona 3 FES' opening is still one of my favorites. The music is just so good, it instantly stomps every other op beneath it.
I disagree with it "instantly stomping every other OP beneath it", it is a good sing but it isn't that good and on top of that it's the worst opening animation wise cause there's literally no animation and is just gameplay.
Go ahead and do all of them for analysis. As a definite fellow Persona fan, it'll be great to hear each one of the OP's for what we as a casual viewer/gamer tend to miss.

Persona Q has my favorite OP and favorite opening song of the persona Franchise. (Not all of SMT mind you... Just Persona.) And I'm so happy it's on this list.
I know it won't happen, but I wish he would comment about how he feels about the OP for Dancing Moon Night. It's practically serves double duty as the characters describing how they feel after the end of Persona 3 and as a love letter to the fans. Even if it isn't a full video and just a tweet, it would be interesting to know

Personally, I enjoy all of the Persona openings and find that each of them has their own unique charm and style that aptly suits the game/anime which they're connected to. If I had to narrow down some favorites though, I'd probably go with Persona 1 (PSP), Persona 3, and Persona 3 Portable.
[On another note though, I really don't see why Mother's Basement seems to dislike The Answer so much? The gameplay may be a BIG turnoff for many considering how extremely grind-heavy, unforgiving, and tedious it is, but I feel that on their own merit the story bits in it are very good and provide essential character growth for the entire cast (especially Aigis), - overall giving us much better insight into the all characters & their motivations.]

Persona 2 is my favorite (duology) in the series, with the PSP P2:IS being my personal favorite opening. (Though, I put it equal with Persona 3's). I'd be happy to see you go in depth with any of the series, but I gotta put a vote in for P2:IS. All of that imagery blows my mind every time I boot up the game.

Mop I guess it's because she was very distinct from the male MC. She wasn't just Minato with boobs. It made replaying all of P3 far more interesting. Plus, you get to romance P3's male cast, which, creepy shota shit aside, is awesome.
I think you mean duality
The female MC is like her own character, a new design, different responses to in-game events, and people treat you differently. For example, Yukari and her, in the beginning, have a character dynamic that was absent with Minato. It's a different experience. (Also, she has a different weapon.)

While Persona 3 was my first Persona game, Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden's openings will always have that highest place in my heart. Persona 3 showed me the song which would influence me to find my calling in voice acting and composing (Poem for Everyone's Souls), and the game itself lead me to P4 which (along with Okami, and without any sort of hyperbole) saved my life. Even now, five years later, though Persona 3 is still a beautiful and poignant game, it's Persona 4 Golden which inspired me to write my musical, and what continues to inspire me as I write chord after chord and line after line.
All of that being said, I would be incredibly happy to see you dissect each and every OP for the Persona games! And I do mean ALL OF THEM. In whichever order you'd prefer to create and release them, I would watch every single one, and pass them on to my friends as well! I love these videos, and I love that your sharp eyes pick out things that even *I* didn't notice in these scenes (the Personas appearing on the frames while zooming into Izanagi actually blew my mind, I had no idea they were there). Equal parts educational and entertaining, your videos are something that I always look forward to being released. I don't know why I wasn't already subscribed (I could have sworn I had before, damn you TH-cam!), but I am certainly subscribed now! Just finished Persona 5 recently and it probably one of my favorite games ever. I want to get back to P4 and P3 eventually, but I'll likely have to emulate them since my PS3 I originally had yellow-lighted (AGAIN) and I've lost my digital copies since Sony isn't porting those to PS4 yet. :(

I have to say Innocent Sin PSP is my favorite. The visuals, aside from the credit shots, are amazing... the fish to butterfly transition is beautiful.
I have an extremely soft spot for the original Persona's PSP remake (I'm not talking about P3P or the P2 remakes, I mean the original Persona) The style is really cool like as if it's made of construction paper and there are tons of hints to the plot are hidden in the background, the song is really catchy and the lyrics fit the game. It's just really stylish in every way. The only thing that takes away a little is that it uses some clips of the redone cutscenes, but I really enjoy the way these phantom hands pull away the clips. It's definitely a lot more creative than the P3FES opening.

And now both Persona 3 and 4 are somewhat in the shade as P5 gets a giant recognition from a more mainstream Western audience that doesn't know the series has been this way and with those qualities for some time.

I've noticed that's it's a trend that the easiest entries in videogame series are always the most popular and successful like Skyrim.
But what's worst is that most people who think that Persona 5 is the best one in the series or that the previous games are bad probably either watched a playthrough or never touched any of the previous games.
As a game, I didnt like persona 5 as much. Never felt a growing connection with the other characters, found mona a lazy rehash of teddy (but more likable) and felt more forced doing certain things (or rather not allowing me to do more things) then in p3 and p4, not efficiently hiding it through story.
I still like the game, but it didnt reach the height of either p4 or p3
